The End of Manual Transmissions?

  • Опубликовано: 3 окт 2024
  • Manual transmissions have been a stable of car culture since its inception. Unfortunately, in recent years, the dwindling demand for a manual transmission is spreading worldwide. Leading car manufacturers are turning their backs on the manual tranmission and replacing them with high-tech, complex torque converter automatics or Dual Clutch Transmissions (DCTs). As each year passes, it seems more and more high performance cars are being released with just one transmission option, an automatic. The end of an era may be upon us. The question is: will we have to say our goodbyes soon?

      There is definitely a market for manual PERFORMANCE cars. I don't hear anyone complaining about little cars with 1.0L engines becoming automatic in the masses. It's the automatic sports cars shoved down everyone's throat that people complain about. And having paddle shifters in high end sports cars does make sense since theoretically they can be used on a track and so reducing the time spent changing gears is important. But what on earth is the point of having a 500hp mustang as an automatic? Not even paddle shifters. Just full-on auto. There is no reason to drive anything like that. And the biggest issue is that it's beginning to look a lot like we won't even have an option at all in a few years. It seems fair to me that at least the models could be offered as both automatic and manual especially since clearly so many people want manuals. The market is anything but dying out.

    and thats a bad thing we wont have the simple fun feeling that makes us feel like were alive and it really gives that young feeling of fresh body opened to do alot of things, everything is going towards the more reliable lazy luxury direction and i mean luxury is a good thing, but sometimes, luxury is not cool.

    • @benmackey8777
      @benmackey8777 5 лет назад +3

      I don't think we're going to see manuals disappear just like that. Over 80% of the cars on the road in Europe are manual, and they're still many manufacturers that offer manual transmissions like, Audi, BMW, Ford, Skoda, Seat, Aston Martin, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Toyota, Nissan, Dacia, Volkswagen, Mercedes, just to name a few. But less then 5% of new cars in North America are Manual, and the problem is that Americans are just lazy. They don't want to deal with an hour long commute, bumper to bumper, in a manual car. But us as car guys will put up with it. I have people ask me, "Why do you drive a manual car? It's just more work, and more to try to think about while driving. Why don't you just get an automatic, its easier to drive". But we don't just drive manuals because they are easier. hell, autos are now faster and more fuel efficient than ever. But we dive them for joy, for that sweet sweet feeling of rowing through the gears on a back country road. But manufacturers don't care how good that feels, they care about how much money they roll in. So if autos are what's selling in the U.S. then that's what automakers will make. And also, if everyone drove manual cars, and knew everything about cars, then there would be nothing to make us different from the norm. But at the end of the day, the real thing we should be fighting... are the electric cars

    • @dyIanVII

    I would agree with your video that there is much joy to be had when driving a manual car, not even beginning to list the benefits of having complete control over your vehicles shift points.
    BUT.
    That being said, you have to keep in mind just because the car community (primarily referring to car enthusiasts more focused on performance) is a smaller fraction of the driving community out of the entire world of every day drivers. Being a car enthusiast and owning a manual would become more of a hobby than anything because people value time and convenience. Just because a group of car enthusiasts ask for a manual doesn’t mean they’ll give. They’re in the business to compete and make money. You can kiss your future Mustangs and Corvettes goodbye if they fail to compete with more mass desires vehicles, although I completely agree with owning a manual. It’s just the truth that has to be acknowledged.
