      @ArtWolinsky  8 лет назад +12

      Correct! To provide a bit more detail, the pond level is being kept where it is to minimize the chance of possible wash out of the road that is only about 20 feet from the dam. It also allows the lower pond to rise. In the long term, this helps improve the water table and the diversity of wildlife .

    • @gary24752
      @gary24752 8 лет назад +9

      Trying to figure that out myself. Seems like it would go over the dam before coming out of the pipe. It was not installed as a true overflow system.

    • @wolinskyfamily
      @wolinskyfamily 8 лет назад +3

      gary24752 water seeks its own level. So as the pond Rises the water will flow over the dam through the pipe. Because the pond level rises slowly the pipe can handle the flow. Water begins flowing through the pipe well before the pond level reaches the top of the dam. The only way there would be a problem would be if we had a deluge that comes maybe once in a thousand years. The pond levellers is based upon literally thousands of installations around the country. However sometimes it is counterintuitive when you first see it. In NJ

  • @gomertube

    Beavers are a serious problem just about everywhere in the eastern US and in a few places in the west. Here in North Florida beavers have gone from a curiosity to a menace in less than 15 years. Most people think you can just trap or shoot them out but those options don’t work and it’s unpleasant in any case. They are rodents and simply repopulate as such.
    I have considered many ways of coping with beavers on my own property but haven’t settled on a solution; I have read mix reviews on pond levelers. I see that perforated pipe is not being used here which probably helps.
    Are they trying to block up the cage around the inlet?
    Thanks for continued monitoring of comments. You’re doing a community service.

      Flow control devices designed and constructed by Mike Callahan are 97% effective. Ours has been functioning flawlessly since 2015. As long at there is at lease 3 feet of water, the intake cage is large enough to prevent the beavers from feeling the intake and making any effort to dam the cage. Checkout the videos and tutorials available at Mike's non-profit. You can sign up and get instructional videos to build your own. www.beaverinstitute.org/education/youtube-videos/

  • @fellow7091

    What is the purpose of the pipe? I did not see any water flow through it nor did also the beavers who ignored it for the reason.

    • @ArtWolinsky
      @ArtWolinsky  4 года назад

      It's basically a siphon system to keep the pond level from rising. If the pond level rises to within 6 inches of the top of the dam, the water will flow through the pipe to keep the pond at the level it was on the day we installed it. That was in 2015, and a lot of water has flowed through it since then. I'm not sure that the beavers actually ignore it, as much as they can't do anything about it. The hear and see the water flowing at the base of the dam, but don't know the source is at the top of the dam. To them, it's like a waterfall that can't be dammed. This summer, we are having a drought and as of last week the pond level is down over 2 feet. We've had some rain this week, but there still has to be more before any more water will flow.

  • @JXZ-JAM

    Im not exactly sure how this works. How exactly does the leveler work if it sits higher then the water level? Is the current water level the max height you want the pond?

    • @spuriouseffect
      @spuriouseffect 6 лет назад

      Beaver only block areas along the damn where water is flowing over the top. By directing the overflow through a pipe, the Beaver stop building the damn higher and higher once the water is flowing through the overflow. What i don't understand is why they didn't extend the pipe to the bottom of the other side.

    • @bikebrains
      @bikebrains 6 лет назад

      @@spuriouseffect The beavers would have plugged it. Other vids have shown plugged drain pipes.

    • @spuriouseffect
      @spuriouseffect 6 лет назад +1

      @@bikebrains So the beaver are more likely to plug a drain pipe when it's exiting way below the damn than they are to block it when the discharge is right on top of the dam? That makes absolutely no sense.

    • @ArtWolinsky
      @ArtWolinsky  6 лет назад +3

      I agree that it doesn't seem to make sense, but often things that work are counter intuitive. The water flowing over the dam is flowing into the pipe is on the bottom of the pond far from the dam, so the beavers don't feel the inflow. I suspect they hear the outflow, but they have no way of blocking it. After three days of very heavy rain last week, that caused areas of the Lamprey River to flood the banks, water in the pond raise to where there were 6 places where water was flowing over the dam. The beavers stopped the flow in 5 places. The 6th was the pond leveler pipe. Since they couldn't find the source of the flow, they didn't touch the pipe. All the could sense was the outflow at the bottom of the dam. Trying to stop it would be like trying to stop a water fall by piling mud at the bottom of the waterfall. They don't even try. I can just imagine them sitting around the lodge at night drinking beaver beer and cursing about the one leak they can't fix. Seriously thorough, the pipe had been in place for three and a half years and we have never seen any evidence that they bother the pipe. The try like crazy to get into the culvert protection cage to get to the culvert pipes from either the intake or outflow side of the pipe, but find little or no success.

    • @ArtWolinsky
      @ArtWolinsky  6 лет назад +2

      Good observation. The inflow is protected with a beaver deceiver. The outflow side is protected with steel mesh. Since the beavers have no way of putting sticks in the culvert, the try using grass, rocks, and mud which often wash away the following day. It required an hour or two of maintenance during the spring and summer. This spring, we will be installing a deceiver on the outflow side and the system will hopefully be zero maintenance.

    No sound. Would love to know why they cut the ribs on the pipe.

    • @ArtWolinsky
      @ArtWolinsky  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for the comment, Jay. The cut doesn't impact the integrity of the pipe. The pipe is a double wall pipe. It's a slit along the rib that allows air that is between the two pipes to escape. Otherwise the pipe would float. Even so, you'll notice the pipe is weighted by cinder blocks to keep it on the bottom.

      david Reynolds it's all physics. Water seeks its own level. It may not be obvious, but the bottom of the pipe is set 6 inches below the top of the dam. As the pond level rises, so does the level of the water in the pipe. As soon as it gets 6 inches from the top of the water flows over the dam, thus maintaining the pond level.

    • @gobil5274
      @gobil5274 6 лет назад +2

      The water in the pond will be as high as the bottom of that pipe. Which means the Beaver have to build the dam up higher for it to work, otherwise the water will go over the dam. You set the pipe practically on top of the dam.

I am going to see if my brother-in-law knows about this method(he manages 20,000acrers in upstate NY for S.U.N.Y.). He always refers to them as "Pesky Beavers" whenever he talks about them!

      Right you are. Each solution depends on water flow and other conditions. The process you describe works well if the dam they build will not threaten property as water backs up behind it. If land is threatened, a trapezoidal beaver deceiver that prevents damming but allows water to flow through the culvert is the best way to go.

      After two years, beavers kick their young out to go elsewhere and build their own lodge. They will travel over land up to 50 miles to find a new home. If we got rid of our beavers, it would just leave a vacancy for some other beavers to fill. Besides it is much more cost effective to put in the culvert protection and pond leveler. It's a one time solution that maintains the pond at levels we choose and gives us all the ecological benefits of the wildlife and water quality supported by the actions of the beavers.

      They seldom get bigger than 40 pounds. They are territorial when it come to other beavers and will protect their claim, but are not aggressive. There are very few reports of beaver attacks, however they have serious teeth and can defend themselves.. The beavers improve the quality of the water table and improve the ecosystem. The only problems arise went the interests of people trump the interests of nature. Beaver create ecosystems and build land. Humans destroy ecosystems and cause erosion.

      The installation was complete and 100% successful. The reason water was not running is because instead of waiting until we had to lower the level of the pond, we installed it to maintain the level it was at the time of installation. During spring thaw and substantial rain, the water flows beautifully. Between the culvert protection cage and the pond leveler, we have been beaver conflict free since 2011.
