  • Throwing off the hump is one of the most peaceful and satisfying activities you can do in ceramics. For me it's a spiritual practice, and I can honestly say that the potter's wheel is where I spend the most time in prayer.
In this short video we will go over the basics of throwing off the hump:
    - how to get your clay centered
    - tips for keeping S-cracks away
    - how to remove your finished pots from the mound of clay
    - other tips and tricks.

you are an excellent instructer. I’ve listened to a lot of instructive videos and you are by far the best at explaining the techniques. I’m saying this as a totally blind individual, recently having had college level ceramic instruction, and objectively, your verbal directions are golden. I look forward to all your new content. PLEASE keep them coming! Thank you and God bless you!

I attempted to make my own shippiki, out of a wood rib and some waxed thread I had around. Did you make yours? Out of what materials? Thank you.
I threw some clay off the hump yesterday and it went pretty well for the first time. Though I struggled with the new tool and getting the pottery off of the clay… More practice!

Oh wow, Ryan. Thank you so much for that encouragement! I think this is one of the most impactful compliments I've ever received. Thank you for saying that. I'm so glad you're finding the content helpful. I have found so much life in this discipline. I'm THRILLED it's accessible to you as a blind individual! Incidentally, one of my sons is blind as well. Perhaps he has helped me learn to articulate what's i'm doing with my hands. Thank you so much for sharing this, Ryan! Please let me know if you need help with anything else! *** Best comment I've every received!!! Thank you!!! ***

Hey Ryan! Yes I did make it. I think it was a popsicle stick or a tongue suppressor with a piece of string attached. I drilled a hole in the tongue suppressor and then tied the string. Way to go throwing off the hump! It's addicting isn't it?. For a long season, it was the first thing I would do every morning. It is so repetitive and meditative. Here's a video I did throwing off the hump a while back: ruclips.net/video/CHjcmlpkW-8/видео.html. Keep practicing brother!

@@OutpostPottery you’re welcome! You’ve certainly earned/deserve the compliment. It seems as though you’ve internalized The way you interact and communicate with your son. So much so that it shows in the videos you make. That’s fantastic! Your son is fortunate to have a good father like yourself. Yes, life-giving is the way I feel about ceramics as well. I’ve really been enjoying throwing off the hump and I am doing so now with porcelain for the first time. It’s amazing! With porcelain, the Clay is so reactive so I get immediate feedback. It’s like the Clay is teaching me how to throw🤣 I appreciate your response to my comments, it made my day. I’m very grateful. If you ever have the time to make a video demonstrating how to make different types of lidded forms that would be pretty awesome. Keep fighting the good fight!

Thanks Grayson. I appreciate that. It's even more fun to do. I can do this for hours and just get lost in it.

What type of container do you use to keep the clay leather hard for forming or clay lifting

These 18 Gallon gray containers I use to store leatherhard clay are from Lowes. They work great!

How long did it take you to get where you could throw off the hump like this? I struggle with a single ball of clay!

The hardest part about throwing off the hump is centering all that clay. Throwing off the top of it is about the same difficulty as throwing a single ball. I did it every morning for a long time so I have had a lot of practice now. It's part of my morning routine
