  • Just want to clear up some of the confusion between HAPP and IL brand joysticks. My recommendation is still the IL Eurostick: www.paradisearcadeshop.com/en/...

    Not a fan of American Joysticks but ngl they are cool.
    The only reason why people barely use them is that those Happ and IL sticks is that they are too tall to fit on those arcade sticks (Madcatz TE2, Hori RAP, Qanba Obsidian, etc). Most of the time, Japanese and Korean levers (they are kinda similar to American sticks) are mainly used nowadays.

    Tigheklory, thanks for uploading this update video. And thanks for your arcade info videos, they are always very helpful.
    I prefer batsticks, and have been trying to find he best ones. I grew up using Happ and IL in the arcades, but after doing a lot of research on all the available sticks, it seems the consensus that the best sticks (response/durability/maintenance) are Sanwa and Seimitsu sticks. So I'm thinking of using the Seimitsu LS-56-01 with bat tops for my upcoming arcade cab projects.

    it's thanks to this video and my personal experience with Japanese joysticks that I decided to get myself an IL joystick. Great video my friend. IL joysticks and parts need more love.

    Nice video with clear explanations. I actually just buy Happs and buy the actuator, Z-stop and Pivot for the IL separate. I also get Happs with Cherry switches only. Once you do that...Happs are almost completely identical to IL's. Some IL's and Happs do not come with Cherry switches...which was the staple of Happs in the 90's. Happs are easier to get imo in America. Very few shops have IL's and while Paradise Arcade is a good shop...they often remove ordering ability due to weird stuff. In fact up until August 21st they didn't accept any new orders for quite a while. I'm guessing they were behind on orders.

    @Tighe Lory This might come off as a stupid question but I'm very unfamiliar with arcade wiring. So I've been looking for a fighting stick but wanted something to use for multiple game systems and I settled on getting the X-Arcade with the intention to replace the joystick and buttons, I've read the IL EuroStick is a drop in replacement for the X-Arcade but I want the Japanese style and feel. But the problem is I believe the X-Arcade uses .187 contact micro switches and the Japanese sticks I'm looking at has a 5 pin connector, how would I wire it up?.
    Also on Paradise Arcades site they sell a "IL Adapter Plate" to use Japanese sticks, would that plate fit in the X-Arcade without modifying the joystick slot?.

    Great, informative video. Exactly what I was looking for when I was learning about arcade sticks. Can you please do a quick video explaining you choice for arcade buttons? Obviously most will be micro switches, horizontal or vertical, or perhaps leaf on the old cabinets, as well as concave and convex. Your knowledge on these would be appreciated, specifically on brands, even if its just preference.

    Great video! I was planning on switching out my xarcade joy sticks when I get it. You mentioned the il joysticks from gameparadise. I noticed that they're are other joysticks brands for sale. What would be the best joystick for street fighter games that is compatable with the xarcade arcade stick? Thx

    I have a tankstick and planning on getting the il sticks as an upgrade. On the buttons what do you think I should do? Should I upgrade to cherry switches? By happ comp with cherry switches? I know I can get il buttons with cherry switches but that really gets the price up there (I'm planning on upgrading my xgaming solo too which I use for consoles). 3 sticks and 24 buttons. Do you know if the ultramarc goldleaf buttons are any good?

    Hey there, great video! Helped me a ton with deciding on my stick. I have a quick question though. What kind of red shiny material is under your plexiglass on that control panel with white buttons and where did you get it? IL Euro FTW (for me, anyways, being an arcade hermit from the 80's and 90's). That happ super looks like what came with my xarcade stick. I did something sacrilegious, to some, I replaced the Sanwa in my SFxTekken stick with an IL Euro.

  • @tf2whackyengineer

    Good video, especially showing the actuators. My new favorite is the Sanwa JLF with a Kowal actuator and octagonal restrictor. Keep in mind though, while I played SF][ in the early '90s on Happ style sticks, I was born in '81 and most every joystick back then was Japanese style lollipops. I wanted to recreate my childhood playing Pac-Man, Life Force, and other games like that. :)
    Granted, I'm not a huge fighting game player anymore, so your mileage may vary. I like platformers, shmups, and classic arcade games. The Sanwa JLF on its own was too loose, so I bought a seimitsu, which was good, but still a little too loose. I put the JLF back in with the oversized actuator and an octagonal gate and it works great. It even works well for 4 directional games like pac-man. Before the expanded actuator, it sucked for anything that didn't use 8 way.

    • @tigheklory
      @tigheklory  7 лет назад

      tf2whackyengineer yeah the Sanwa stick is a quality stick and I think that the octagonal restrictor plate really improves them. I like a circular plate even more. The IL sticks are what I learned to play Street Fighter on. I like that it's a smooth motion

    • @tf2whackyengineer
      @tf2whackyengineer 7 лет назад

      I haven't tried a circular, but octagonal is close enough. I grew up with circular plates, I'm pretty sure. I'm sure that in the 80's, I was using diamond plates (the stock sanwa square gate rotates to be a diamond for games like pacman, but it's a bit of work each time you want to change games). I was addicted to SF2 in the 90s. Never played 3, and only played 4 on PC. Still, I remember a lot of bat-top games before the sad decline of arcades, and since I'm american, I'm sure most of those were circular gate.
      Octagonal is pretty awesome for retro games. For a fighting game, yeah, I might like circular, but I like the definite down-left, down-right, etc., for old games like Double Dragon and the like. They also work pretty well for newer games. I've been replaying Undertale and Shantae: Risky's Revenge with my new stick and both work great.
      I'll admit, I did compromise with Sanwa parts. I love them, and they're just right for the games I play, but I'm sad I don't have concave buttons like I remember. :) These are just as functional if not more so than the concave buttons, but i miss that old retro feel.
      Still, my dreams as an 8 year old have come true. I can play arcade perfect games at home, with infinite quarters, and now I have a joystick.
      The best part about building something like this, and perfecting it to just what you like, is going through old games you loved years ago, but haven't played in a while, and enjoying them in a new light.
      I loaded up a Commodore 64 emulator (I got one when I was 2 or 3 years old, and my dad quickly taught me the commands to load disks) and brought back one of my favorite games, Jumpman. It took a little troubleshooting to get it working. I forgot that the C64 original required that you plug into joystick port 2 and not 1 for some reason, so I had to swap ports in the emulator. Still, it was awesome. I had two joysticks for my C64, a stiff black Atari one (I don't know where we got it, for all I know, my parents actually bought an atari one, they were compatible. Actually, C64 was also compatible with Sega Genesis game pads. Playing Sonic the Hedgehog with an old Commodore Joystick was amusing (It only had one button). My other stick was a tall, loose black and red ball top with a button on top. My parents preferred the Atari, and I preferred the tall one, because of the button on top (The atari only had a thumb button on the side). In retrospect, my parents were right. The top button was cool, but the atari joystick was so much tighter, which is what my Sanwa is now that I've modded it. Plus, as an adult, I went back and played with my new arcade stick and got to the level my Mom was on that game when I used to marvel at her skills.
      By the way, if you haven't played Jumpman, either emulate it now, or go to an "abandonware" site and hunt down a game called "Jumpman Lives" which is an almost perfect DOS port of the original before Apogee had to abandon it, realizing that they couldn't legally publish a port of that game. :) Jumpman was an incredible game for the time. Each level played slightly differently, and, according to Randy Glover (The programmer) he had to do seperate programming for each level. It's a brilliant platformer that's still fun.

    I'm trying to make my own arcade cabinet and I ended up buying the Super Joystick (I guess I'll change it later) but I can't even assemble the thing because the actuator doesn't sit/touch the bottom of the assembly. The shaft isn't quite long enough (withh the long sleeve) for me to put the ring in the groove to hold the actuator and stick down. The shaft and thehole of the actuator are flush with each other, making it impossible to install the ring to hold them in place.
    I feel like the length of the shaft on mine isn't correct.
    Can anyone help me out with this?

    I saw another guy reviewing the IL sticks and he said he was disappointed because they play 4-direction games very poorly (like pac-man). He says the x-arcade sticks are actually less "sticky", or something like that. Has this been your experience? I was about to replace my x-arcade sticks with 2 IL sticks but now I'm concerned.

    Never been a huge fan of Bat sticks, but I'm not sure I've used that many so that could be why. I may have only used the Happ Super since it's the cheapest and gets put in a lot of machines because of the low cost.
    I generally prefer Sanwa or Seimitsu sticks, not sure if you've done any videos on them previously or not. For fighters, I generally go for a Sanwa JLF 8YT, while for scrolling shooters I prefer a Seimitsu LS-32.
    Not sure if you've covered any of those sticks in other videos or not

    Yeah, I absolutely agree. I use IL sticks for my fullsize cabs because I prefer its feel, and durability. But for my minicabs, the IL stick seems a little too big in comparison to the Seimitsu stick, including the below deck assembly trying to fit into a compact control deck, which is why I'm leaning towards Seimitsu sticks for my next minicab projects.

    This is a good video , but the happ super joystick is not so bad in my oppinion , i think they are very good for diagonals , and realy soft to move , and double tipping for platform games like cadillac and dinos ,it is also very responsible stick. i have all sticks , sanwa jlf , jlw , il comp , happ super and some unbranded copys , and i can say , super stick is very good for street fighter , but the best stick is sanwa jlw with a circular gate , you can put all motions in very short time. but they are only my opinions .

    Hey Tighe, Good content, but I believe you are slightly off the mark with this one. There are other factors to consider when talking about the Happ Ultimate and Supers that I think might be informative for people to also consider. I own all the different types of joysticks that you have here and have also used them extensively. IMO the IL Eurosticks are very middle of the road when compared to the Happ Supers and Ultimate's (*with a small caveat). The Ultimate's came in different configurations based on spring tension and bushing height. The spec sheet from Happ states that the short bushings are used for wood control panels and the longer bushings for metal control panels. In my experience, if you have a metal control panel (say for a dynamo cut corner) the smaller bushing allows for better height placement which helps to mitigate the knuckle busting "stubby" shafts. As for spring tension they came in Heavy Medium and Light options. The light spring (which I find to work best) feels very responsive and allows for fast actuation without having to move too far from center. The Supers have a very smooth feel, provide snappy return to center. I feel that these get the worst rep of all because by the time arcade collectors come around they have usually become mangled by super aggressive players, and thusly play like major league ass. When new, they work very well and are buttery smooth, and have the same kind of "clickyness" that you might find on a Japanese stick (which I prefer for input confirmation). They are also the most versatile of the bunch because they can become 8 and 4 way sticks out of the box by flipping the actuator grommet on the bottom. For home use I would go with the Supers, because I think that the way they play is very forgiving to newer players who tend to use their whole arm and shoulders, but but are also good for experienced players who prefer to stay within the gate. With the IL Euro sticks I find that their point of actuation is very unforgiving and vague. When standing shoulder to shoulder with another player, I find that I am constantly having to readjust to keep on center with the joystick or else I will constantly drop inputs. when playing alone, I also find that I am fighting the inherent vagueness of the stick and have to look down every once in a while to make sure I am inputting movements correctly.

    Hey Tighe, love your channel very informative, I have new old stock Happ competitions that I recently bought that have the white nylon actuator and cherry switches made by il b4 the were made in China, my question it's quite hard to do street fighter moves, there was a guys a klov that carefully drill the cherry switches so it could tighten closer to the actuator, what's your opinion do Happ comps need to be worn in

    • @tigheklory
      @tigheklory  10 лет назад

      If you are having a hard time doing Street Fighter moves it is either because the sticks worn out, or while they might have the white nylon actuator the actuator is also supposed to ride on a white nylon bushing too. some have pvc bushings. I highly recommend you buy at least one IL competition stick from Paradise Arcade Shop and make sure you select the option for Cherry microswitches. See if you still have difficulty with it, and if so you might just prefer Japanese Sanwa sticks. Check this video out of me playing Third Strike, I am using IL Competition sticks with cherry microswitches:

    Seems strange to me that the actuators are made of rubber or nylon. I use Korean joy sticks (Myoungshin Fanta & Crown) and they have plastic actuators, which obviously doesn't wear down. Seems like a strange choice of materials :P

    • @tigheklory
      @tigheklory  8 лет назад

      +rivethead19 The acutators are made from PVC (HAPP) or Nylon (IL) both PVC and Nylon are a type of plastic. The Supers have rubber actuators which suck. Nylon wears less than PVC.

    • @tigheklory
      @tigheklory  8 лет назад

      +rivethead19 if you played in arcades in the 90s these were there. they are a precision stick and I think the best for fighting games, Sanwa sticks are good but the square restrictor plate slows me down, some guys like that it's easy to press diagonals on Sanwa sticks, but I consider that square gate to be like training wheels, it helps in the beginning but limits you when you get good.

    • @rivethead19
      @rivethead19 8 лет назад

      +Tighe Lory I'm 24, so yeah, I played on these a little, but nothing more than button mashing as a little kid in bowling alleys and a few arcades. Do iL sticks not have a restrictor plate then...?
      Playing on JLF, I always hated how the restrictor plate seemed like it was in the way; always a clunky plasticy feel. I bought a Crown 303 and was playing Street Fighter IV at that time, and I couldn't hit diagonals at all. I quickly stopped using it. Using a square gate, is like bowling with the bumpers up :P
      I learned how to use Korean sticks by playing Tekken. I think I would still be playing Japanese sticks if I didn't start playing Tekken. I love Tekken :) SF still gives gives me trouble with the Korean sticks for some reason.

      Wood floors Channel I'm glad I could help. I buy them from Paradise arcade shop and get them with Cherry brand switches in them. Last time I ordered that was a selectable option.

      One more question you think magnetic sticks same brand will work even better ???? They are more expensive , its just sometimes more expensive don’t mean anything is better than regular, what you think have you used them ?

      Wood floors Channel honestly it's all about preference, the perfect 360 magnetic have effect sensors are overkill for fighting games if you are using a bat style stick with no restrictor plate. If you prefer Japanese style Sanwa JLF sticks (defaults to a square restrictor plate [you can replace it with a circular or octagonal plate]) then you might want the magenta stick. What games are you playing and where are you installing the stick? The magenta has the advantage of that you can program the stick to be 2-4-8 way and I think even analog. You can control the size of the dead zone all kinds of things. It's built in the JLF stick but it's square restrictor plate only right now. I personally hate square restrictor plates.

      Korean levers/joysticks > American/Eurosticks

      @@akaiyui9300 You must be mad , i own alot of korean sticks been collecting since 2006 .

      If you are a player that loves to wavedash alot on Korean sticks in matches .
      1 of the issue's ive faced is that the levered microswitches after some months will not click as responsive as when they were new . Example you tap forward on the stick 5 times and the microswitch clicks twice then no clicks after .
      This fucks up wavedashing and you end up having to buy new microswitches for the Korean stick every so often . Me and many other skilled lightdashing 2p mishima's ive played have all had this problem its very annoying .
      American sticks other then the rubbish happ super use non levered microswitches and dont ever had this problem korean microswitches have . So they are better for long term durability

    I find those HAPP joysticks to be unreliable on diagonals.

    • @tigheklory
      @tigheklory  8 лет назад

      Yes they are terrible compared to IL Eurosticks.

      I'm stuck with a Happ on the Alan 9000 I bought from eBay, and was looking to get replacement parts for it before taking the step of replacing the joystick outright. However, with lizardlick gone, I can't find anyone who sells the white nylon actuator (or for that matter, the piece that the actuator rides). Hell, it's a pain in the ass to find any American spare parts (Unlike friggin' Sanwa, which you can't go five paces without tripping over). Hell, even Paradise doesn't sell those small parts.
      Any place you'd suggest?

      Just buy a full IL Stick, they are cheap enough at Paradise.

      ***** Much as I'd hate to throw the stick away (and as much as I'd like to have a couple spare actuators), you're probably right. They're $12 on Focusattack.com, after all.
      Speaking of IL sticks, what do you think about the IL Compact Joystick? Obviously you'd get a Euro Joystick for fighting games, but what do you think of the Compact for shmups or 4-way games?

      I have gotten myself some Sanwa and Seimitsu joysticks. They are both very good but I think the Sanwa one is a tiny bit better. They have changeable restrictors in them an feel very responsive. Keep in mind though, that those are from Asia and have a ball-design instead of the bat.

    use Sanwa and Seimitsu.. those look like they were made in the 70s

      tompparaideri it's a different design, actually those Sanwa and siemitsu sticks were designed in the 80s and IL sticks were made later. all the kiddies use Japanese sticks, the old guys like me learned on the IL design.

    None of these.

      The IL stick with a balltop is really good , much better then japanese sticks imo

      I would probably say you are liking the IL stick because you don't use a jad stick so maybe your comment is biased, unless i am wrong and then i apologize. I have a streetfighter TS from madcatz and it has a Seimitsu Latest Version LS-32-01 Arcade Joystick Installed, i like that stick. Plus i have an X-Arcade stick with IL branded stick and buttons, again i like that. What i am saying is, it's personal choice no one stick rules the world

    • @menacegtr
      @menacegtr 6 лет назад +1

      Yes i have to agree, its return is very snappy, plus i would also say the Happs, IL sticks just feel as though you could hang off them
