Very early in their career, Murry had the Beach Boys driving a station wagon across country pulling a U-Haul trailer containing their stage gear. This was before Brian had a breakdown on an airplane once they had achieved some notoriety. One of their stops on the road odyssey was a gig that Murry had booked for them to open for our band, the Exports, at the Midway Ballroom in Cedar Lake, Indiana, By the time this gig took place, the Bech Boys had already charted one record nationally. We asked the owner of the ballroom to please change the order in which each band played to have us open for the Beach Boys.

Two things stand out in these early Beach Boy songs: Brian's falsetto and Mike Love's story telling and melodic narratives. Along with Dennis's energetic drumming and Carl's deft mastery of the Chuck Berry riffs, you get a string of hit records. Love is always denigrated in these kinds of threads but he was great doing this kind of music. His voice cut through the sound remarkably well. You can really hear the lyrics. The lead does a great job with some hard chords. Their guitar licks were always underrated over the band's heyday back in the 60s. Critics at the time seemed to ignore the band's overall talent and focused on the regionalism of their music. However, as you see here in T.A.M.I. they were pushing the tempo on most of the songs. The lack of comments on Al really emphasizes his excellence. He blended seamlessly with the band and never made it about him, despite being a great rhythm guitarist and supporting vocalist.
Al is the everyman, extremely talented, but he doesn't have controversy or glamor. He does his job with precision and excellence. He was the normal guy, relatable to normal guys.
I know the beach boys are known for their harmonies, but they are fantastic musicians in their own right, Al and Carl on the guitars, Brian on bass, Denny on the drums, WOW! And then there's Mike Love....hmmm....
The noise coming from the crowd must have sounded like a Boeing aircraft taking off and there were no monitors to speak of.... must have been especially hard for Brian. ... and Carl played that Rick 12 very well too. Amazing performance considering
While so much of their studio material was the Wrecking Crew...you get to see what a talent Carl was....playin' the solos on that Ric AND hittin' the harmonies!

People unfairly put him up against sharp session aces like Hal Blaine. Like apples and oranges. Hal Blaine once asked Dennis how he felt about session drummers playing on Beach Boys sessions. Dennis replied that the last place he wanted to be was stuck in the studio with his brothers for days at a time. He was much more interested in cars, girls and of course surfing probably in no particular order.
@@ClubViking63 ''Heroes And Villains'': Everyone knows Dennis (and Brian) were severely abused physically and emotionally by their father Murray and the abuse seemed to have a life-long impact on both of them. Arguably though without Murray Wilson as their manager there wouldn't be a 'Beach Boys'. Yet without Murray Wilson there may also not have been Dennis's violent self-destructiveness and Brian's crippling, un-diagnosed major depression. Murry Wilson has always been recognized as central to his own family's unhappiness. Today, in the age of Prozac, Dr. Phil and the ''Opra-fication of America'' the Wilson family of Hawthorne CA. would be called just another 'dysfunctional' family but it has made the unvarnished story of The Beach Boys one of the most ironic (and tragic) in rock and roll history. Al is the everyman, extremely talented, but he doesn't have controversy or glamor. He does his job with precision and excellence. He was the normal guy, relatable to normal guys.
Genius, Bryan the master, Mike funny and crazy
I know the beach boys are known for their harmonies, but they are fantastic musicians in their own right, Al and Carl on the guitars, Brian on bass, Denny on the drums, WOW! And then there's Mike Love....hmmm....
Mike's ok,lol
That dancin' was like its own instrument.
@@JasonKTerryy...yes, like a tuba.
Mike Love WAS the quisentential surf Rock voice in the day..he gets way too many knocks..Robert at 68.
I love this raw talent and natural affection from the audience... no staged fans :)
You gotta give The Beach Boys their respect. Remember the good stuff.
Not as much as people say. The Wrecking Crew mainly helped in 65-66. This was filmed in 64. All of these songs that were played in this show, the BB played on the original tracks
Very exciting! Honestly, that was a great performance...distorted sound couldn't spoil the incredibly tight and disciplined energy.
Man that drummer swings a mean stick!
Dennis Wilson was awesome!
He had so much energy behind the kit until the last three years of his life when the drinking and drugs caught up to him.
I don't know how to surf; I can't even swim for that matter. But I love the Beach Boys music. The Beach Boys rock! And yes, Dennis was the coolest looking of all five.
I say it once again : IT'S WORTH IT--------------SO , WORTH IT -----------TO BE OLD TODAY, JUST TO HAVE BEEN YOUNG, THEN. -----------------WolfSky9, 73 y/o, LA/USA
Can't even imagine. I'm 37 was born quite a while after this. If only time travel were possible.
Wolfsky, Sir, it is nice to see you here again! Love your input on the Beach Boys!
Only old ladies (and old men) can remember the Little Old Lady from Pasadena.
@ No, it includes me! I'm 68. I was 9 when Surfin' Safari was a hit. I hated it at the time but later became a huge fan of both the Beach Boys and Jan and Dean.
@ I didn't like Mike Love's extremely nasal voice. It's an acquired taste, I think. Nowadays "Surfin Safari" is one of my faves.
found my dads 1966 best of the beach boys album when i was a kid loved em ever since 40 years
To this day, this is THE finest version of " SG" ever --EVER!! I was transfixed watching this, the 1st time, back in Nov. of '64, 18 y/o, & a BB's fan 4-Ever. Wolfsky9
I was at this show, so many years ago~~ Good times, and awesome memories!!!
LUCKY! Would have loved to have seen this show but I'm light years from California. Canuck, eh?
So was i--------3rd row, l-side as we look at the stage. I was dating Steve Binder's youngest daughter Lynette . ------" Surfer Girl" was just music heaven. -------------------------------WolfSky9
Dennis Wilson wasn't as bad a drummer as people make out; lays a rocking beat here and the women love him!
Totally agree! He keeps great time and has a good feel. I enjoy his playing, and my favorite drummer is Neil Peart, so...
@@Nazzz65 Dennis was brought in very fast....and taken out very fast....
@@ClubViking63 ''Heroes And Villains'':
Everyone knows Dennis (and Brian) were severely abused physically and emotionally by their father Murray and the abuse seemed to have a life-long impact on both of them. It certainly qualifies as ''bittersweet''.
RIP Dennis Wilson 1944-1983
Timothy J. Horan Dennis wasn’t terrible, but he was no Hal Blaine. He was more of a clubber than a drummer. But his sex appeal was off the charts.
Was at this show at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in 1964! What a lineup of talent it had! The Rolling Stones came out last but had to follow a scintillating set by James Brown and his Famous Flames that I'll never forget!
The Stones were on fire also at that show. Off the Hook, amazing rendition
The Stones were none too pleased having to come on after the show James Brown gave.
Omg Dennis in the drums 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Dennis Wilson is headbanging and his hair is like the star of the show 😄 second only to the fantastic singing 😃😃🎶🎶
And the kickass guitar and bass playing
@@daniellavaladez7820 Carl could crank it out back then!
I was in grade school when the beach boys came out. I dug them then, and I dig them now. Getting older hasn't hurt me a bit...as long as you tube plays groups like the beach boys. There is a dance called surfin dance, it would tightin up the middle section of the body. My sisters and their friends danced in chains, which is people following each other while dancing to the record. Those were good days.
brian is so full of energy! and mike forgot his cap..
Didn't need one then
This band was the seminal band for all other bands to follow from the early 60's on.
THE REAL AND AUTENTIC BEACH BOYS!!!
