  • Paul Iams and I wrote the score for this entertaining TV spot for the Illinois Bell Phone Center Store. It featured a then unknown Robin Williams as the mischievous young husband. Looking back, it's amazing how much the actress portraying his wife resembles Pam Dawber who, just months later, played opposite him in "Mork and Mindy."

The producers of that commercial had to have seen how naturally funny Robin Williams was before anyone else knew. They probably told him to be himself and they ended up with a gem of a commercial.

The actor James Staley, who did a LOT of commercials through the 70s and 80s has a fun story about this. Apparently it was down to him and 'this other guy' for this commercial, and the 2 of them turned up for final day auditions. He was up second behind 'the other guy'...and all he heard was 'gales of laughter' coming out of the audition for the entire time 'the other guy' was in there. He went in afterwards and did his thing, and inevitably 'the other guy' got this commercial and a couple of months later turned up and caused a bit of a stir as an alien on 'Happy Days'...a few years after that though James Staley was the priest who married Mork & Mindy on the show.

I loved that classic advertisement from Illinois Bell. The following commercial was aired in 1978during the Illinois High School Association Class A Boys' Basketball Elite Eight State Finals. Brilliant!! A Smart 6!!

Crazy seeing a superduper star when he was unknown (but just as brilliant!).

I still have those Trimline phones from the early 80's. They are very reliable. Robin is so cute in this, lol.

In this nothing of a performance, Robin's genius shows through.

Notice how during one of the “prank calls”, Robin Williams says something about “blue jeans” with an accent.
Sounds similar to when he says blue jeans in Moscow on the Hudson in 1984.

It's not Pam Dawber, those who are saying it is. It is Debbie Zipp.

Holy crap - it's like the funny's there but the company wanted to make sure none of it reached the other side of the screen. Hey - how about some more music zingers to pound the last laugh into the ground. Thanks!
