Robin Williams is in town to do a live Solar Energy Benefit show and Mindy can't get an interview. Mork doesn't think he looks anything like Robin Williams, but he gets chased by a mob of fans. Having met Robin Williams in person several times in the early 90s, I can attest that this is exactly how he really was. Warm, soft-spoken, and a little embarrassed to be famous. I miss him so much.
That is awesome that you had such an encounter with him, in which you witnessed, first hand, his zest and humble spirit. I envy that, and am glad it happened for you.
Now THAT'S a memory you'll never forget! That must've been super cool. So, how and where did you meet him?

Watching this as a kid, this was just a funny scene with Robin talking to Robin. Watching this as an adult after Robins passing, it's heart breaking to see the reality of his life in this scene. Earth will love you forever Mork, Nanu Nanu

One of the best shows I ever saw was his Live at the Met in '86 and he wasn't on drugs then. I hope when you die anyone who knew you only remembers you at your worst and most vulnerable. Absolutely sickening.

that he shouldn't be left alone? I cant believe he said all these things, yet didn't listen to himself. After watching the one where he's died and goes to heaven and goes to hell to save his wife...who committed suicide. "What dreams may come" you would think....he would have remembered that. its been what almost 10 years now? I can't imagine being a rich famous person, literally everything you want, and him having all kinds of friends and family and people who love him, yet it just wasn't enough. something was missing. my guess it was something he never actually got a chance to really look into. and that being God. everyone has a God size void in the heart, they just dont realize only one thing can fill that. some resort to money, power, happiness, whatever to fill that void. in the end it is always God, who we should always put first in our lives and the rest will follow.
so clearly the world wasn't enough for Mr. Williams. maybe he wanted to meet God so bad, this was the only way he knew how. but to learn what a mistake that is to end a life that was never his to begin with... and now only to end up in a place where you relive your worst nightmares, for the rest of eternity.
You watch a video like this and realize how truly sad this poor man actually was. That lamentation wasn't acting it was confession.

You're very much correct. I casually knew him in the 90s and the few times that he wasn't "on", you'd see a very shy and thoughtful person beneath the funny person.
It's a perfect example of "tears of a clown".

@@josephwanjiku6853 Mork and Mindy was filmed in front of a live audience. There are actually many anecdotes of Robin Williams doing additional bits or even full-blown performances to entertain the audience before the show and in between takes, etc, too.

Yeah that definitely hit home
He knew he didn’t have anything to hide behind. This episode is by far one of the few times Robin didn’t put on a show for the camera, and it truly is so beautifully bittersweet. It’s funny because Mork is the first thing that pops into my head when someone mentions Robin, yet i will always remember him for his down to earth calm personality. He was such a gentle soul and i miss his smile more and more everyday... 1951-2014 ❤️

I just got done watching this episode on Antenna TV. The 'end of the show' report he gave Orson had the same effect as that response. It was really a foreshadowing 35 years ahead of time. :(
5:55-6:05 gives me chills. This was so long ago and sounded like a reach out. That wasn't acting to me. That was The Real Robin Williams. Much love to this great comedian/actor. R.I.P.

My goodness, this scene is like a biography of his life. Wow. Once he got started, he had people wanting things from him all the time. This scene was so early in his career. Spooky how it unfolded just like he said. Kind of a premonition.😢

@@MrUnknown-wf1xfHe had killed himself because he was losing his mind. He had been diagnosed with Parkinsons three months before his death. I'm not saying he was going crazy but he was showing signs of dementia and he knew there was nothing he could do. The autopsy revealed he had Lewy body dementia. Sadly, he would have had maybe three difficult years left of life. It's still a shame how his life had to end so early. I mean, 63 really isn't that, that old.
I hope your situation has been getting better. Depression is never easy. We just need to rememeber we're not alone. Stay strong. 🩵
@@phaedraremington6247 I always thought that he might have done it to save his family from what happened to Casey Kasem, who also had Lewy and was suffering while his second wife and kids were fighting over his care and burial; his kids accused their stepmother of abuse and neglect. Casey, like Robin, entertained people as a voiceover in many animated features, most notably as Shaggy on Scooby-Doo and hosting America's Top 40.
Also, he missed his best friend, actor Christopher Reeve, who was a classmate and roommate while they were studying at Julliard. Robin paid Reeve's medical bills, never announcing it. Reeve died a decade earlier from complications regarding his paralysis, and Robin was not the same.

God, that was crushing. He was like a feelings sponge. He felt everything, and the reason he was so good at what he did is because he had a way of communicating those feelings and allowing you to share them for a moment.
I was in the studio audience for this show. He was one of the only actors I've ever seen that interacts with his audience between takes. It was a blast!
How was this filmed? Was there 3 actors on set or was one of the Robins prerecorded?

@@g_men2121 As an audience we were there on what they said was a very special episode. They told us it would be a longer filming day than normal. They first filmed Robin as Mork. This shoot took the most time. Then they took a break and
filmed Robin playing himself. During editing they put the two tapings together. During the scenes where he played Mork he costantly came into the audience to entertain us. You could tell he loved interacting with his fans. And we loved him back. When they filmed the scenes where he played himself.....he never came into the audience once. He was in a different space. Thanks for being interested in the memories. He was such an amazing man.

This is still one of the best Mork & Mindy episodes ever and the 2 'Robins' were seamless interacting with each other.
Wonder how they pulled off the wide shots. You can tell the standin has slightly different hair/height for the close ups but those wide shots looked really good for 1980

It would probably have been easier to pull off and less expensive to have a stand-in and/or a doppelganger, than it would be to manipulate the shots with overlaying film segments. A shame they were unable to find a doppelganger in time to play Robin, while he was performing his role as Mork. IMHO... it would've been easier to obtain the final results of this scene and even cost affective to accomplish this episode if they had. Either way, it was enjoyable to watch, and it's fun to consider what it would've been like to be there and do.
Filming techniques have improved in comparison to what was used up through to the 90's. It's really kewl to watch the results, not just for the entertainment value, but also contemplate the messages presented.
This episode shows how the techniques being implemented, and the results achieved, were much better than what is seen in the two movie installments of *The Parent Trap* in 1961 & in 1998. They were fun to watch also.

This seems like the most honest interview he ever gave. If this was done now, I think we would all see the signs and reach out to him.
The irony of such a prophetic and honest realization, caught 50 years ago.
We are so fortunate to have this, to understand that Robin gave us the truth of who he was, yet it took us looking back to realize the depth of it all.
And so sad, that we, who loved him, could not help him.
Such a remarkable soul.

Siva Machina I'm not the one peddling suicide as an opiate capable of solving all the problems of people under stress like test subjects had already demonstrated there were no dangerous potential side effects and got cyanide FDA approval as an over the counter pain reliever. I'm against suicide not condoning it like you are. My religion values human life and believes murdering yourself is just as immoral as murdering somebody else. The only ethical reason to take a human life is when you believe it's necessary in order to save the life of somebody else. Robin Williams was a multiple personality which is what made him such a great actor and comic and I want whatever dark evil personality it was that murdered him to burn in Hell for it. When somebody has been murdered by a lynch mob if you don't condemn it you condone it not just for the person already lynched you can't bring back to life but for every other victim that could be murdered for the same reasons.
@@jimscribner8314 Where the heck did you get the idea that Robin Williams had Multiple Personality Disorder (D.I.D)?? Just because someone can "pretend" to be other people, doesn't mean that they have a clinical diagnosis for that.
He WAS diagnosed early in his life w/ Depression, which he was managing his whole through therapy. After the 2nd season of Mork & Mindy, he went through rehab for his alcohol & drug use. Which, he went back in one more time in his late 40's. He had heart surgery in his early 50's (cow-valve replacement) and then, in his mid to late 50's, he was diagnosed with Parkinson's. But, later, he was also noticing that he was having moments of forgetting lines & hallucinations with extreme anxiety. He desribed it, towards the end, as though he felt like he was going crazy. He was trying to cope with this several years until he took his own life at age 63 (we don't know exactly why). Although, during his autopsy, it was discovered that his entire body was fully infected with cells of Lewy Bodies. This is the one of the most aggressively, fatal forms of Dimentia, to date.
I'm pretty sure that he WAS a religious man because he would talk about his religion & put humorous twist on biblical stories in his acts. I was brought up against suicide, as well.
All that I'm saying is that we also shouldn't judge others until we've walked a mile in their shoes. Not condoning.... just saying!
MaryAnn Marlowe I agree to a large extent with what you said. It's true that Multiple Personality Disorder normally differs from merely an actor who is just consciously imagining themselves to be a character they're portraying but that isn't as easy to separate as you might think, since as Sigmund Freud said, what we pretend to be we may eventually become. We are all to one degree or another functional multiple personalities and some of those personas can be very dark self-destructive ones we should never allow to control us. When I was in the Army dealing with a very stressful situation I once came very close to that slippery slope Robin Williams slid down myself because that dark side we all have makes solving complex problems so very much simpler. That's why I don't buy into the being non-judgmental about it stuff when somebody murders themselves or attempts to. The only rational reason to kill anybody is when its necessary to save another life, Jumping on a hand grenade to save the lives of people you care about is a different thing than jumping on a hand grenade just because you feel depressed in the same way killing somebody to stop them from murdering somebody is different than killing somebody just because you're mad at them, Suicide sets a very bad example on respecting the value of human life.
The fact they got two great talents to be in one Scene is magical. This episode must have cost a fortune
I just witness true Robin when he telling Mork (Robin) why he chosen a career in entertainment because he incredibly shy kid unable to make friends easily, so Robin created all characters - he realized that he can use his characters be more open to everyone! RIP Robin!
I remember Jim Henson and Kermit being interviewed. Henson was a pretty quiet man. Kermit said, "I can say things that he can't."

"Maybe that's the last thing I want." wow.. Robin Williams, had a lot on his shoulders it seems. I can only imagine how much he hurt inside.
Robin was asked about this episode and if the conversation was really about his own life and how he felt and his answer was yes

I saw Robin Williams in 2004 in Kuwait, while we were staging to move in to Baghdad, He was just a real person he made each soldier in the audience feel like the star. Here is missed for sure..
To say that I miss Robin would be like saying I miss the right arm I once had. I miss it and life will be very difficult without it but life will go on. Robin made millions smile and laugh in spite of whatever darkness he or they were experiencing at that time and that is probably the most precious gift anyone can give. He, at one time or another gave that gift to every person on earth. From the sold out concerts to movies and T.V. shows to the personal appearances to entertaining our fighting men and women overseas to just simple interviews, he gave it all. Simply put, he loved to make people smile and laugh. The money and the fame while nice for a while were ancillary. He was one of the true and classic funny men of our time and will go down in history as one of the all around greats not to be forgotten for millenia to come. As for me, I'd like to say thank you Robin. You and your quick wit and comic genius got me through many of my darkest times and while it saddens me to know you're no longer with us, I can say with enthusiasm that your long nightmare is over. Rest now Robin, you've earned it and if you happen to see him up there, say hello to my Dad for me. So long.
Robin was truly gifted in alleviating other people's sadness, by making them smile and laugh, as you said. I've noticed that whenever I for instance refrain from, or miss the opportunity to make someone relax, smile & laugh... that a blessing is lost by helping them in such a simple fashion.
The mere fact that others are blessed, just as we are, for helping them in the simplest acts; a kind word, a gentle or encouraging look, a hug or shoulder caress, or giving them a few dollars without being asked.
That may have been how he felt when he performed. Maybe by seeing their joy, the hope that his inner struggles & demons would fade away for the moment. I know first hand what that's like; to see their positive response.
its has been over a year since our brilliant Robin passed, I still get choked up thinking about him or watch all his great works. RIP DEAR ONE
+lorarobin partonwilliams I revisited quite a few of his back catalogue since the 11th August and the anniversary of his death! It was in some cases bittersweet in moments yet glorious in other just to see what a versatile actor he was. I have just finished Boulevard. Worth a go, I reckon!! :)

I'd forgotten about that episode.
It is SO.. surreal,..its like...seeing, actually being IN the presence of Robin Williams introverted, AND, extroverted side, at the very same time..
An absolute improvisational comedic GENIUS,.. and Mr. Williams,.. "Robin",.."you are sorely missed.."
The next year he did his first big 1-hour special "An Evening with Robin Williams" and at the end of the special they did this same type of thing, Robin Williams meeting Robin Williams in a different character, and the discussion between the two Robin's just sends chills up my spine. I have the issue of TV Guide form 1998 too, and in it a photo is featured of Robin as a bartender serving himself at a bar. He seemed to really enjoy doing the dual roles of acting and having a conversation with himself, and they are some of my favorite moments too. Just totally surreal. The dialog in this episode of Mork and Mindy just feels like a big troll or prank 30 years later. It just doesn't feel real.
They should have played this whole scene at his funeral. That's quite an intimate portrait of his personal life for a sitcom.

MusicMaster1974 having just watched this, you can tell that even though hes saying lines,what he was saying was as much from the heart as from the script. what they say is true, that funny people and clowns do look happy to hide the pain,. making others laugh is fun, and makes you forget about the other stuff
I believe Robin Is the most Missed out of all the famous people that have passed in history. NO one brought more Joy To the world in such a universal way.

I bumped into Robin Williams several times over the years and he was always so kind and gracious but also a little sad. It wasn’t until I looked back at those experiences did I ever see it, just like you can in this clip 😢
Robin was such a great actor! Mork was a character with such a persona and Williams was so charismatic and unique that you really think for a minute your watching two different people.
I remember the first time I saw this show. What a childhood memory! I've always seen a sadness in his eyes. Being a self proclaimed comic myself, I can agree to the fact that the funniest people are indeed truly sad people and making others laugh somewhat mends the hurt inside them. I just wish he could have stayed with us longer. 😢❤
I remember this episode from when I was a kid - and I was expecting it to be the zaniest Mork & Mindy episode ever. As I recall it actually ended up being a very heartfelt, melancholy episode about how fame is a double-edge sword that comes at the cost of a normal life. If I remember correctly it ended with Mork/Robin Williams making note of all of the celebrities who died young. I would say Robin Williams is the only actor/comedian in the world who could deliver such a heartfelt soliloquy while playing an alien from outer space - and totally knock it out of the park. Robin Williams - you are truly missed.
The episode aired not long after John Lennon's death, and Robin mentioned him in a halting manner at the very end, which was sad. Today, he would have added Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Prince, Princess Diana, Rebecca Shaffer, Kurt Cobain, and Lisa Marie Presley.
The role of Mork was my first introduction to Robin Williams! I'll always remember the humor of that show!

interesting fact this episode reason is explained in Behind the camera the unauthorized story of Mork & Mindy Robin had lost the feel as he did in previous season with so much going on and dealing with weight of stuff on shoulders so in a way this episode was therapy for himself. Its tragic the end of his life but i like to remember him as i have growing up, bringing laughter to many. He had such heart and passion in what he did to make millions smile sometimes a person like that is the saddest and it we forget that the actor and actress we all adore and love are human like the rest of us. He was a friend, a husband and a father as well an actor you never realize how special someone is until their gone but that doesn't mean that person is forgotten. The fact is Depression is serious and laughter is one of best things for it i suffer from it and alot of Robin Williams works cheered me up growing up and one of the things that helped me from ending my life when i was young to be truthful so im thankful that for the time he was here on earth that he brought joy to myself and many others for years i just wish he could have known how loved he was.

It's come out that Williams had a form of degenerative mental disease and was literally losing his mind. He was aware of this so he chose to end it rather than live through that. It's tragic that he had the illness but he _didn't_ end his life due to depression.

To the best there ever was or will be as a person AND a performer! 60 yrs old so I grew up with him and watched Mork and Mindy every week, even after it dropped off the last couple of seasons
I got a chance to demo one of my video games for Robin Williams in the 90s and he was such a kind hearted soul. Cracked jokes with everyone and was so patient. But spending time with him face to face I could really feel the loneliness deep down. It was palpable. 😢

This clip makes me want to cry. I have always loved Robin for who he was inside and out. Depression is not easy to live with believe me i know i have it myself. It's sad how some people can't truly find peace and happiness until they pass on. Robin i miss you more and more every day thanks for the many years of laughs sweet angel.

Seeing this today makes it's meaning all the more powerful. Robin Williams was in my opinion the funniest man of his time and his comedy and movies built a vast majority of my childhood. He will truly be missed by all who love him, myself included.

I think i remeber seeing it at the guy time.. It really affected me that he was so interrupted he had to make this episode.
I've never seen a more accurate description of this poor man's emotional and physical demise than this. These were warning signs. He couldn't say no because he wanted people to like him. I wish the people that he impacted could've returned the favor and helped him more. Also, I love the concept of the main character's actor guest starring as a famous celebrity and "meeting" themselves. I've seen it done well on the Nanny, Moesha, and Sister Sister among other shows.

@@jasonwu9287 it was the 80s. comedians used gay, trans, and drag concepts as punchlines - bugs bunny epitomized it. it wasn't prescient, it was a time that "when archie bunker could accept a gay and not berate him, it was seen as progress"... and so when robin williams joked about a man becoming a woman, it was seen as progress because he dared joke about it, because that's something you just didn't *talk* about.

As a kid watching this, I never grasped the honesty he showed of himself in this rare moment. It breaks my heart as an adult to understand that there was sadness/loneliness sitting right in front of all us all this time. It just makes his passing that more heartbreaking. I think Robin Williams was one of the most talented entertainers. He is in my top two and as far as comedians go, he’s number one. He passed away seven days after my 64th birthday. I always wanted to meet him. He was such a talent. I wish he could’ve lived longer, but I guess when you’re that talented and creative and you lose that creativity it’s like someone just snatched your heart and soul from your body.

I don't think it was a defense mechanism. Listen to 7:47 again. The personality we know as Robin Williams was custom-crafted to be appealing to new people because he had a deep-seated need to be liked. I think he wanted to be liked for the shy him, but he projected the quirky him in order to be liked at all.
