And as a substitution for "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" -- at a funeral -- it was totally outrageous. I was laughing so hard I almost missed her reaction and long recovery attempt. His smile was beautific.

Yes, what an amazing talented man. Everytime I see one his skits, he cracks me up and then I feel a little sad bc there will be no more from him. But I am so grateful we have what we do have! First was funny...second was HILARIOUS. Robin took the small bits of dead air in the first scripted sketch and made them amazing. Carol's energy in the improv was great too.
Robin truly was a genius. The master of improv. I am so glad I came across this video. I had never seen him work with Carol. As a child I would watch her show with my mom and laugh hysterically. His improv was rehearsed. I once saw him on the Tonight Show and Arsenio at the same time. His "improvised" lines were exactly the same on both. The questions asked by Johnny/Arsenio were the same.

Watch him with Johnny Carson, particularly the earlier shows. Most of that was ad-lib. Watch his comedy club acts before he became a household name: Rehearsed material followed by ad-libbing as he walked through the audience. Good Morning, Vietnam: Most of the on-air patter was ad-lib. They put him on the set and let the cameras roll. Robin produced hours of material from which the scenes in the movie were cut and spliced. Same with Aladdin. If my memory serves, Robin produced about 14 hours of non-rehearsed material. He would be given the scene set-up and feed a character's line and off Robin would go! After sooo many years I still can't think of a funnier female comedian than Carol. Losing Robin was heartbreaking. Based on here introduction, he already had some of the things he wanted to do worked out, probably including that song. But the filler -- that's where the real ad-libbing is, and between the two of them it's genius. I barely laughed at the first "take," but the second one was absolutely hilarious.

So true, I remember the day of his passing, reading it on a newsstand here in San Francisco, on our way to sausolito for a last taste of Summer before school started, I still think I am going to run into him at the caffe trieste, or on Columbus avenue or in an improv class at fort Mason, or, in Green Apple books. What wonderful comments these are, I feel I can grieve here in community. He left us so much! The Mrs doubtfire house is still often crowded with people around it, looking to touch his spark that generously ignited all of us who love him. Yes, you rest brother. We love you.
Two geniuses of comedy. So sad Robin Williams is gone. The news of his developing Lewy Body disease was simply too much for him to bear. The day that Carol leaves us, will be a very sad day, too. She is a national treasure and a legendary trailblazer in the world of comedy.

The coffee in the embalming room line plus the Negro spiritual song and the dead pet hamster were totally outrageous. I was in stitches at almost 1 a.m.. Funerals can sometimes be funny.
It's fascinating how the lines Robin Williams improved were consistently better than the ones an entire team of writers had an entire week to come up with. He really had an incredible comedic mind and a very quick witted one to boot.
I actually saw one producer on a talk show once that said that often they just had Robin's character on the script and "ad lib" typed in because Robin never missed a beat and it was always awsome! :)

Got to give Carol Burnett a lot of credit for this skit. This stuff could only happen on her show. She recognised William’s talent before he became a huge hit. A lost venue for creativity.
A little over 30 years ago, I watched a Mother's Day special that included Robin Williams and his mother. SHE is where Robin got his comedic ad lib chops. What a funny, wonderful woman... In an interview, she had Robin -- and me -- in stitches. What a gift she gave us in her son -- and what a loss to the world it was when he passed away. If the measure of one's life is to have left the world better than one found it, Robin and his mother succeeded spectacularly.
This was so funny I have tears of laughter running down my face. I would have loved to see Robin Williams and Tim Conway in the same skit. I don't think any one would have been able to keep a straight face.

She was laughing so hard on the second take at the coffin, when he sang "Pick a bale o' Cotton". The smile on his face looked like he was experiencing one of the best moments of his life, pure joy at having made a master comedienne crack up. I loved every second of this performance.

One of my happiest memories is me hearing my mother's giggles coming from another room I always knew she would be watching Carol and friends I thank Carol for the laughter that she gave to my mother .
The chemistry two comedians like this share is not something that can be described.... you just have to see it unfold while sending waves of laughter over an audience. Natural character can not be learned.... it’s really instinct at it best. An artist such as Carol has the ability to absorb the spontaneous lines a genius like Robin could throw her way. When the ad-lib on the second scene happens at the casket ... THAT is the EXACT reason I watch, over and over and over... these highly intelligent entertainers. The cast of The Golden Girls, Alice, The Jefferson’s, Three’s Company, and All in the Family are in this class. They are natural characters that take brilliant writing and it even more “brilliant-er.”

I had the gift of meeting Mr.Robin Williams after an outdoor standup show. It was mid-late 70s . My date ( who was working 1 of the lighting crew) took me back stage to meet him. As Mr. Williams was walking towards me with his *crew* talking behind/side of him, Mr. Williams stopped while putting his hand up..they all stopped & hushed. My date introduced us, Robin shook my hand, asked if I enjoyed the show..kissed my hand goodbye then continued on..memory that will forever be in my heart. Love you Mr.Robin Williams. R.I.P. Carol Burnett was renowned for her ad libbing whenever an actor missed a line during the early days of television. I saw a documentary where the leads of a (local?) tv show told the audience they were going to deliberately screw up their lines just to show off Burnett's improve skills. And she kept the scene going. The leads however were not as good as Williams and Conway so the scene was bland.

I was worried when I saw the length of this skit and by the end I was crying with laughter for more. having the context of her show and his vast array of characters makes this so good. you can see how these pros work and it's just inspiring. I cried when he passed.. and it still hurts, but we were lucky to have had him and to experience the phenomenon.

So true, I remember the day of his passing, reading it on a newsstand here in San Francisco, on our way to sausolito for a last taste of Summer before school started, I still think I am going to run into him at the caffe trieste, or on Columbus avenue or in an improv class at fort Mason, or, in Green Apple books. What wonderful comments these are, I feel I can grieve here in community. He left us so much! The Mrs doubtfire house is still often crowded with people around it, looking to touch his spark that generously ignited all of us who love him. Yes, you rest brother. We love you.
He was an original. What a talented human being. He had the heart of a child. So sad.
He was a pure soul. He may have been on the autism spectrum which would explain the childlike quality, and can go along with ADHD
Two geniuses of comedy. So sad Robin Williams is gone. The news of his developing Lewy Body disease was simply too much for him to bear. The day that Carol leaves us, will be a very sad day, too. She is a national treasure and a legendary trailblazer in the world of comedy.

The 2nd take was hilarious. You can almost see how his mind works, how it's constantly improving and adding to what was already done. Hers, too. Her "BS" was great! Two unique genius talents together. I'm glad we at least still have Carol.
I adore her improvisation re: the hamster, complete with her fingers curved like claws. Wonderful response to Williams's improv. And yes: the 2nd version was better than the 1st.

The coffee in the embalming room line plus the Negro spiritual song and the dead pet hamster were totally outrageous. I was in stitches at almost 1 a.m.. Funerals can sometimes be funny.
It's fascinating how the lines Robin Williams improved were consistently better than the ones an entire team of writers had an entire week to come up with. He really had an incredible comedic mind and a very quick witted one to boot.

A little over 30 years ago, I watched a Mother's Day special that included Robin Williams and his mother. SHE is where Robin got his comedic ad lib chops. What a funny, wonderful woman... In an interview, she had Robin -- and me -- in stitches. What a gift she gave us in her son -- and what a loss to the world it was when he passed away. If the measure of one's life is to have left the world better than one found it, Robin and his mother succeeded spectacularly.
This was so funny I have tears of laughter running down my face. I would have loved to see Robin Williams and Tim Conway in the same skit. I don't think any one would have been able to keep a straight face.

She was laughing so hard on the second take at the coffin, when he sang "Pick a bale o' Cotton". The smile on his face looked like he was experiencing one of the best moments of his life, pure joy at having made a master comedienne crack up. I loved every second of this performance.

One of my happiest memories is me hearing my mother's giggles coming from another room I always knew she would be watching Carol and friends I thank Carol for the laughter that she gave to my mother .

The chemistry two comedians like this share is not something that can be described.... you just have to see it unfold while sending waves of laughter over an audience. Natural character can not be learned.... it’s really instinct at it best. An artist such as Carol has the ability to absorb the spontaneous lines a genius like Robin could throw her way. When the ad-lib on the second scene happens at the casket ... THAT is the EXACT reason I watch, over and over and over... these highly intelligent entertainers. The cast of The Golden Girls, Alice, The Jefferson’s, Three’s Company, and All in the Family are in this class. They are natural characters that take brilliant writing and it even more “brilliant-er.”

Two of the greatest gifts one can have in life is the ability to sing well and to make people laugh...watching carol and robin perform togerher made me laugh really hard.. TWO GIFTED PERFORMERS 😂😂😂 Being a gifted comedian like robin must of made him feel he had to be performing constantly so as to not disappoint his fans..I am sure he had a very serious thoughtful demeanor out of the spotlight..

I had the gift of meeting Mr.Robin Williams after an outdoor standup show. It was mid-late 70s . My date ( who was working 1 of the lighting crew) took me back stage to meet him. As Mr. Williams was walking towards me with his *crew* talking behind/side of him, Mr. Williams stopped while putting his hand up..they all stopped & hushed. My date introduced us, Robin shook my hand, asked if I enjoyed the show..kissed my hand goodbye then continued on..memory that will forever be in my heart. Love you Mr.Robin Williams. R.I.P. Carol Burnett was renowned for her ad libbing whenever an actor missed a line during the early days of television. I saw a documentary where the leads of a (local?) tv show told the audience they were going to deliberately screw up their lines just to show off Burnett's improve skills. And she kept the scene going. The leads however were not as good as Williams and Conway so the scene was bland.
I am so grateful that RUclips has these. We will never be blessed with these geniuses again.

I was worried when I saw the length of this skit and by the end I was crying with laughter for more. having the context of her show and his vast array of characters makes this so good. you can see how these pros work and it's just inspiring. I cried when he passed.. and it still hurts, but we were lucky to have had him and to experience the phenomenon.
