I just want to mention that it has a much larger variety of songs than most musically focused anime. It's not unusual for shows to only have one or two songs that they have to overplay for the characters to have something to perform, but this is not a problem here.

Anime musicals are the dream genre that I've always wanted to see become a reality, and at last, we finally have it. We saw the greatness of animated musicals through The Disney Renaissance and The Prince of Egypt, so now, it's long overdue to see that greatness come to life in anime. Thank you Yasuhiro Ire for proving once for all that anime musicals are very much possible, and deserve to be the next big genre is anime.

Studio 3Hz is my personal favorite studio for making 2 of my top 10 anime of all time, Princess Principal and magical girl masterpiece Flip Flappers. SAO Gun Gale Online was also extremely good, despite being part of the SAO franchise. Healer Girl was an excellent return to form after a string of disappointments for me. (Black Fox was okay but should have been the full cour series it was originally intended to be, and Chidori RSC was outright boring. I didn't watch A3 because I don't watch straight forward idol anime) But Healer Girl recaptured their old magic and was my favorite anime of the season, it was especially fun to watch with my physician spouse who drew analogies between her experience in medicine and the show

I know I'm late in typing a comment and it might not be seen but I remember that there's an anime that's the closest to a musical which came out before Healer Girl. I haven't watched it since then but the characters do a lot of singing explaining the plot and motives. It's called Dance with Devils and it aired in Fall of 2015. It's a reverse harem but it's not a very good series but at least they have great musical style singing in it. You can even find the musical scenes on compilations on RUclips.
I was also going to add that the Whole Cake Island Arc of One Piece also has musical scenes but it's not musical enough to be mentioned as a musical arc imo though One Piece Film Red uses music in a unique way. And the last thing I want to add is that I've been thinking about music in anime all year long even before you posted this video and I'm glad you did. It feels as if there's been a lot of music-related anime movies to come in U.S. movie theaters. There was Belle, One Piece Film Red, and even the U.S. premiere of the two Macross Frontier movies. There's probably more anime movies that use the power of music, music performances as a main part of the stories that came out this year in U.S. movie theaters. I can't think of any other year in U.S. movie theaters that released that many music-related anime movies.

Honestly I just want to add thank you for making this video, it felt like this show fell on the wayside that season for a lot of people, but it’s a show I think back to more often than others, in fact I think it was my most looked forward show in the week.

I normally wouldn't comment about something like this but I think you're misunderstanding revue starlight. It's not a full musical but its musical portions are incredibly central to characterization and plot and I don't think it's right to say that its musical elements are basically meaningless. I really appreciate this video though and I'm excited to watch healer girl! I'm happy it turned out to be a cool show and that someone gave it a chance.

Obligated, as another huge Healer Girl fan, to comment and help algorithm. I think the moment I watched episode 1 and finished, I knew that the show was special, and the feelings of absolute fun and joy I had watching and seeing the concept week by week gave me hope and optimism for shows like this to exist that seldom other originals give me. For me it's always the few originals per year that I latch onto and that I hope explode because its within the anime original space where so many cool shows are found each year.
I'd say, what's even more impressive about the production, is how many episodes, early on were worked on, Key animated/storyboarded by a single person, which nowadays that might be delegated to multiple people on a team, it just really goes to show how well the production schedule was for Healer Girl. Not to mention Irie I'm pretty sure has also trained or helped mentor animators at Studio 3Hz which I'm sure also helps the overall team dynamic and being able to make the show feel so alive.

I was keeping up with Healer Girl as it aired and I loved it. The musical angle was very different from other things I've seen. The most memorable bit to me is definitely that they reused an instrumental song, but somehow managed to script at least two different conversations for the characters to sing in it. But I loved all the healing performances, it really managed to capture that each healer is amazing in different ways, and the visuals for them are so beautiful. Especially loved the idea that the visuals are diegetic, the healers can see them in universe and react to them as they happen, and they can tell when something's going horribly wrong or wonderfully right.
I'm partial to Revue Starlight as the real first musical anime, for its core conflicts literally taking place on a musical stage and having characters sing with and against each other, baring their souls through song as they try to win against the others in the competition they're forced to take part in. The exploration of characters through their performances are kept to the stage, to the Revues, but the way it uses its songs feels deeper than Healer Girl ever goes. Healer Girl is a different take, much more whimsical and airy and fantastical, with musical numbers occasionally taking the place of casual conversation to reinforce character personality, and showing the power of music to soothe and "heal" in the most literal yet fascinatingly immersive way possible in its worldbuilding. I prefer Revue Starlight's use of music as a way of exploring a character's deepest aspects (while still being conversational, albeit in a heavier sense), as that feels more true to musicals for me, but I think Healer Girl's character writing outside of the music stands almost as tall as that. These two go in completely different directions with how they use music, and are equally as valuable, as the only two musical anime in my mind so far.

People you describe in the beginning fall into the "I want to seem smart but not put in the effort." As in, they can trust a Marvel/Disney/popular thing to give them what they want but fear that they might be let down by something they know zilch about. Even with trailers and promos, we've been burned before.

You are definitely right that originality and original work is really hard to come by, as more time than not it just doesn't sell. I also have a idea that if there is no thing anime lacks, it is the MUSICAL! I would create a anime musical one day, and what that musical be about? I have not figured it out yet but the pieces are there.
I think the only anime close to having a musical 🎼 is The Anthem of the Heart (good movie by the way).

Crazy thing is, I love anime and musicals, but for some reason I just couldn't get onto this show. Maybe because, even though it's technically a musical, It doesn't follow the usual musical set up? Like there are no ques to the music they just start singing randomly. IDK

The obscure horror/thriller series Red Garden is the one other anime series that I can think of which is actually "musical theatre" in the sense of telling its story through song, making the anime musical at once one of the smallest genres in the medium *and* one of the most diverse, because hoo boy, are Healer Girl and Red Garden nothing alike otherwise!

Great video. Healer girls was my favorite anime of 2022 and would really like the anime media to explore more that idea of making musical.
If you are looking for another anime musical. The only one I can think about would be Nerima Daikon Brothers. It aged poorly on some aspect and is not easily accessible because of it's nature as both a musical and a satire of 90-2000s Japan but it is still a very interesting watch especially if you care to look for the context behind what the anime talks about.

Im certainly an enjoyer of musical theater. However, when i first read the summary of this series, I dismissed it immediately as run of the mill seasonal CGDCT schlock. Evidently it’s not what I imagined. I’ll give it another look! At least one episode. One thing im worried about in a series like this is that a lot of lyrical music comes off as awkward when filtered through subtitles, and that feeling may be amplified in a series like this. Lets see!
