Greetings from more than 8 years in the future! I've been subscribed for a couple years now, but this is the first time I've seen this video. I love the general idea of not wasting scraps, and making something beautiful is the best way to do it.
Thanks Marc, Since watching this 2 years ago,, I have made about two dozen of these from various pieces of scrap wood. They sell out quickly at a Christmas fair to support a school for autistic children a not-for-profit elder care community. These beauties go for between $40 and $60 depending upon the wood. My favorites are made of beautiful bubinga with maple sides. I’m about to make a dozen more for this year’s fair.
older video, but still useful! a comment regarding the barrel hinges though. i've used them for years, if you drill the holes with a 5 mm brad point, they are a snug pushin fit and i have never glued them in! Lee Valley has a 5mm brad point and its perfect for the hinges
I'm a huge fan and though my response is YEARS after you posted this video, not only is the content awesome, but the sponsor of this video and your support of them is pretty awesome too.
If anybody have that many tools to just make a wooden box, he/she never needs a video like this. it simply learned these methods way back during tool acquiring. by the way nice boxes.
Excellent video with some great ideas for box design. I'm trying to make plenty of boxes to build up my woodworking skills, so this is perfect - although I will need to modify the design further for use with hand-tools only, apart from a drop saw. Thanks for posting!
Love making these! I’m making 6 right now for gifts. If you’re want to try these out I suggest doing at least two at a time. Good project to try new things like mortise and tenon joint, barrel hinges, roughing and finishing
How did they turn out? I am curious. I attempted making some of these. I don't have all of the tools he has but needless to say mine are headed for the firepit!
did you notice the hole depth for the hinges need to be deeper? i drilled the bottom holes at .3" but noticed it wasn't deep enough. i'm prob doing something wrong
Super project. Will have to make a couple of these for gifts. I might modify the design to make a deeper box - instead of plowing out 8/4 stock (I don't have a lot of that laying around) you could just do a miter joint between the front, back and bottom to make whatever depth you want. Finished product should come out more or less the same, yeah? Thank you.
Wow, super nice looking boxes~! I'm thinking that a batch of these will be this year's Christmas project. Not sure how I missed this video from so far back, but glad that I have it bookmarked now~! Thanks Marc~!
I don't work with wood, and barelly made anything with wood, but omg those tools and machinery looks like miracles, wish I could have them at my disposal so I could make some projects Nice jewelry boxes!
I got some 5mm barrel hinges in the post today... they are seriously small... Those hinges you have they look waaaaay bigger than 5mm. Maybe it's the camera fooling my eyes but the difference between what I have here for 5mm and what I see in the video is huge.
This was interesting. While not jewelry I would like to build a few dice boxes and this gave me a head start. Thanks, now I just need to find a scrap wood pile...
Hermosos trabajos....me gusta mucho todo lo que haces....por favor envía más de éstos trabajos. Te felicito sinceramente. Saludos desde San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora. Mexico.
i saw this video about a month or 2 ago and decided to make one as a gift to a friend since I Have a bunch of spare wood around from building guitars. My table saw was busted so I had to improvise with a router for some of it, but it turned out really good. I used some european ash for the box with brazillian mahogany for the sides. Love the website with all the plans on it for easy reference instead of having to rewatch the video a thousand times over to see what you did and get the measurements 😅
Thanks for the video, great project idea. I have to add a word of warning to everyone, some painters tape is not rated to be on laquer and will ruin it. Shellac is also similarly vulnerable so make sure you carefully read the details on the tape and pick the right stuff!
I can't remember if it was mentioned in the video, but I'll put it out here anyway. I think a good tip is also to finish the wood first before applying the flock adhesive. Once tested it on a piece of unfinished simple ply wood which soaked the adhesive right in. Result... a very unevenly flocked test piece.
Great video thanks for sharing your knowledge I wished you lived closer to me man we could build some awesome stuff oh yeah you have a beautiful family your baby is cute as can be reminds me of my daughter when she was a toddler and thanks to her she gave us three beautiful smart grandkids that are one graduated LSU criminal justice and is in Air Force now and two granddaughters that are in college and all are on deans list I build and work on a lot of things now if I could just figure out how to get those grandkids to come and visit but I can't blame them I was young once also but I know they love me and Grandma I am a native American Navy veteran I was a master mechanic at 18 years and went into the navy as a mechanist mate so I leaned a lot of stuff I can pretty much work with anything mechanical I have a step son that lives on the same property so I know he will always be here to take care of his step mom if something ever happens and when I take that long walk on that path my step son and grandson will have a shop full of every tools they could ever think of but they need to take that time to learn how to work them take care of that beautiful baby and wife and have a blessed life my friend I look forward to some awesome videos from you thanks brother
Do you let the last coat dry before spraying the lacquer thinner or is it immediately after spraying the last coat? Like should the last coat still be wet when spraying the lacquer thinner?
I just finished a similar box for my granddaughter and wish I had watched this video before I did. it would have saved a few hours of aggravation, but it turned out beautiful anyway. I used 1/4 inch stock so most of this wouldn't have applied unless I laminated all of the pieces which I now wish I had. Oh well..next granddaughter is on the way, but it'll be a few years before she's ready for the bling.
After watching this video, and making my own maple and walnut jewelry box a few weeks ago, I have come to the realization that I am a fan of walnut. There, I said it. I like walnut. That is all.
I am trying to improve my skills so I thought these boxes would be a good learning experience and it has, however the barrel hinges are kicking my butt. Regardless of what I do I have a 1/8 inch gap instead of a hair line crack. Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong. Thanks for this project including the plans.
Well, Ive ruined 3 of these now trying to install the barrel hinge... Cannot seem to get the depth and distance from the back correct. Any more detailed tips on the hinging? I dont have a facebook or twitter so dont know how to send any pics of the ones Ive made so far. I covered up the failed barrel hinge hole with a normal hinge to get the boxes done, but it just isnt right..
Great small scale project Marc! Something I think I can tackle even with a 2 month old and a 2 year old, in little increments. Just got a used HVLP that I will try to use for the finish too- haven't seen it used for small parts before but I'm excited to test it out!
Some cool boxes Marc! I like how the design can be varied and those hinges are cool. Using the jack plane to create the curves caught my eye as I used a similar technique some years back using a block plane to help create some gentle curves (I didn't have a jack at the time). - Jim
I liked everything about this box except the notch in the middle for opening it. I think I will try to come up with another method. maybe I will just leave it flush and see it that works. it is really a nice box.
This is exactly what I've been looking for as a gift for my wife. I guess I'll take your route and use your boxes as an inspiration (yeah... "copy" is probably a better word) for my next project.thx Marc :)
This woodworking book is really detailed, *TopFineWoodworking. Com* ! With the aid of this plan, I was able to use words, drawings, real images and different diagrams. It is really an informative product. I am presently making furniture together with my brother and thanks to this product, I feel like helping him is possible.?
You mention that after the final coat, you spray pure lacquer thinner on the surface to help smooth everything out. Is that done while the last coat is still wet, or do you wait until it's dry? Thanks!
Good afternoon my friend! Thank you for all the pointers I value your expertise. I have a question. I ran out of daylight on my third coat of spray lacquer, can I wait until tomorrow to do my final lacquer thinner coat? Thank you in advance for your help.
So that reddish looking wood at 14:25....what is it? Looks like the grain is defined on deep red colored wood? I'm probably an average wood identifier...what is it?
I’ve been making similar ones to these using hand tools, and it takes me about 7-9 hours to make one. My price set up that I’ve always used would put this at around $200 but I feel like no one would pay that. How much do you think I should sell it for?
beautiful boxes marc. will try the simpleton version soon. that light/dark color contrast never gets old for me. does the acrylic finish look better than poly?
I did not plan to make use of this woodworking book, *TopFineWoodworking. Com* but instead curious about it. I had been truly amazed right after trying it. I was seeking to learn more about the art of woodworking, and was not disappointed. I found many topics such as wood types and designing your workshop.
Great project gonna have a go myself when time permits, can anyone explain so i am in uk so i get the 4 and 8 quarter is equal 1" and 2" but do you say 1/2" and not 2 quarter.
interesting design nice and easy to batch out. i was particularly interested in the flocking. i haven't seen that here in nz and generally glue felt into the box which can be tricky to get perfect. and yes i have lots of off cuts which i periodically give away as firewood to clear out enough room for the next batch lol.
So I have made these but I am still having a terible time with the barrel hinges. Is there any other tips you might have? I use the same hinges you are using. I really want to improve with these hinges.
Once again you prove to have the most superior scrapwood pile in the universe...
That baby is very Mark looking. Love the build. Doing these for the many ladies in my family for Christmas. Thank you for free plans

Wow I'll take 10...I charge double that.
I love the tip with spraying the lacquer for the final coat to smooth everything out. I can't wait to try that. Thanks Mark. Well Done as always...
Thanks John!
As Mark demonstrated that technique my face fell into my palms. Why does simplicity sometimes seem so elusive?
older video, but still useful!

I smell some Christmas gifts! I've got tons of scraps and plenty of flocking material left. I like the look more than bandsaw boxes too. Dig it!
If anybody have that many tools to just make a wooden box, he/she never needs a video like this. it simply learned these methods way back during tool acquiring. by the way nice boxes.
This design also works really well for pen presentation boxes. They are made exactly the same just smaller. Thanks for the video Marc!
It's amazing how much I learned from such a simple box. Thanks Marc
I'm glad you call them shop cut offs because some of these "scrap wood" videos have scrap wood that's better than I can buy at a hardwood dealer
Excellent video with some great ideas for box design. I'm trying to make plenty of boxes to build up my woodworking skills, so this is perfect - although I will need to modify the design further for use with hand-tools only, apart from a drop saw. Thanks for posting!

Those boxes were beautifully done! Great video with each step clearly explained.
Thanks so much for sharing the plans and all for free.
Very excitied to try making a few of these.

You old flocker, you! Seriously funny, entertaining but most of all educational! As usual, well done, Mark.
Thanks for posting this video. At some stage, I'll give it a go.
Wow, super nice looking boxes~! I'm thinking that a batch of these will be this year's Christmas project. Not sure how I missed this video from so far back, but glad that I have it bookmarked now~! Thanks Marc~!
Old video, but gave me some ideas. Going to build some jewelery boxes. Nice work. 👍
I don't work with wood, and barelly made anything with wood, but omg those tools and machinery looks like miracles, wish I could have them at my disposal so I could make some projects
Nice jewelry boxes!
Great project. I made 5 of these for a friend for her girls. I used apple that I got from a local orchard. Exciting grain patterns in the apple.
I got some 5mm barrel hinges in the post today... they are seriously small...
Those hinges you have they look waaaaay bigger than 5mm. Maybe it's the camera fooling my eyes but the difference between what I have here for 5mm and what I see in the video is huge.
These are so much simpler than the ones I make.
Thanks for another exceptional (and instructional) video.
Lol, scrap wood you say? To me, that’s my someday wood! Someday I’ll use that for something. I gotta make these! Very nice video
This was interesting. While not jewelry I would like to build a few dice boxes and this gave me a head start. Thanks, now I just need to find a scrap wood pile...

Love that you help the kids not many people do that i do here in Australia
Do you let the last coat dry before spraying the lacquer thinner or is it immediately after spraying the last coat? Like should the last coat still be wet when spraying the lacquer thinner?
Beautiful bedside glasses storage, too. No more knocking them on the floor!

I love how people have different definitions of "scrap wood"
Guess it depends on the scale you usually work in. My scraps are a turner's or scroller's rough lumber. :)
Hella nice scraps, bro :)
Very superb
Excellent work
Very clear narration
Means over all INCREDIBLE.
After watching this video, and making my own maple and walnut jewelry box a few weeks ago, I have come to the realization that I am a fan of walnut. There, I said it. I like walnut. That is all.
Hi, thanks for the video. Tell me where to get such small hinges for the lid. Thank.
Beautiful boxes.
Low angle jack plane is your new best friend I see!
Well, for the last three years or so. :)
+The Wood Whisperer LOL, sorry I'm only up to WT151 it might be another month until I get to 2016
This is fantastic, thank you for putting this together and the step by step walk-through!
Hi my name is Keith I enjoy your video is there any plans for those boxes if can you tell me the dimensions thanks
I love these boxes, Marc. And, thanks for the tip about lacquer thinner, I'm going to have to try that!
Beautiful job! 👍
9:08 the cute baby’s yawn while Marc’s talking is priceless 😂
Well, Ive ruined 3 of these now trying to install the barrel hinge... Cannot seem to get the depth and distance from the back correct. Any more detailed tips on the hinging? I th9ink one of the best videos I have seen on this type of project. VERY well done and BEAUTIFUL pieces!
You do nice work I am trying but where do you get those hinges? Thank You much.....

Elegant, helpful, fine finish ...
Hi love the woodworking video whats the wood species in the middle of the 3 at 4.05 minutes in
I liked everything about this box except the notch in the middle for opening it.
WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE HINGE IN THIS JEWELLRY BOX ,GOOD IDIA I LIKE THIS BOXES AWSOME JOBS
Very cool Mark. I am making a lot of boxes out of scrap wood lately too. The only downside to that is I am saving way too many scraps now! :)
Beautiful boxes! Are we seeing the first appearance of the Wood Whisperer drone with Go Pro attached @3:27 in the video? Nice overhead shot.
I've seen some places say to use regular black paint for the flicking "adhesive". Is there a difference between it and "real" adhesive?
I really don't know. But the stuff I used was thicker and more "grabby" than paint and also self-leveled better than paint.
Really love these!
I absolutely love how detailed your videos are thank you for being on RUclips
This woodworking book is really detailed, *TopFineWoodworking. Com* ! With the aid of this plan, I was able to use words, drawings, real images and different diagrams. It is really an informative product. I am presently making furniture together with my brother and thanks to this product, I feel like helping him is possible.?
you can put a strip of inlay in the front and back walls in the same wood as your side legs, that'd look more interesting I think
Thanks for the inspiration
You mention that after the final coat, you spray pure lacquer thinner on the surface to help smooth everything out. Is that done while the last coat is still wet, or do you wait until it's dry? Thanks!
You can wait until the last coat is dry. The lacquer thinner essentially reactivates the lacquer.
Thank you! I appreciate all you do for us!
Very nice boxes, you're right they would make great gift ideas! Thanks for sharing!
Très belles boites pouvez vous me me dire ou avez vous acheter le flocage et la peinture merci.
Good afternoon my friend! Thank you for all the pointers I value your expertise.
I have a question. I ran out of daylight on my third coat of spray lacquer, can I wait until tomorrow to do my final lacquer thinner coat?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Beautiful boxes. I like it.
So that reddish looking wood at 14:25....what is it? Looks like the grain is defined on deep red colored wood? I'm probably an average wood identifier...what is it?
What did he sprayed and glued to inside the box that looks like fabric finish?
MINCHIA! SEI VERAMENTE BRAVO!
I’ve been making similar ones to these using hand tools, and it takes me about 7-9 hours to make one. My price set up that I’ve always used would put this at around $200 but I feel like no one would pay that. How much do you think I should sell it for?
Your shop is disgustingly clean. I’m jealous.
Hi! New to woodworking - is eight quarter just 2 inches? Like eight fourths? Thanks!
beautiful boxes marc. will try the simpleton version soon. that light/dark color contrast never gets old for me. does the acrylic finish look better than poly?
Beautiful boxes all Marc, a great video showing your methods.
Cheers
Mike
Great video and beautiful work
Hey the Hamster coffin video is out! They look great!
I showed my wife what these looked like, asked if she'd like one. She told me they looked nice, but like little coffins :P
I thought the same thing. make a cut on the top of the curved one and you can have a nice veiwing for your dead rodents.
I did not plan to make use of this woodworking book, *TopFineWoodworking. Com* but instead curious about it. I had been truly amazed right after trying it. It's the imperial system so nothing can have continuity because millimeters are how the devil enters your soul
just wondering what did you do with that stuff ?
love the box's mark , what hardwood's did you use on the three box's please
I would maybe prefer to make it wider. Great work, it's a perfect video. These things can please the eye of whole generations, that's awesome.
Great project Marc and fantastic video. I love your style. Also, that episode of SNL with Kirstey Alley was top 5 in my books!
Great project! Thank you for sharing and for the plans
Great idea for scraps. I'm going to try to shrink it down and make some pen boxes
those boxes are awesome man! congrats!
Thanks for the great content on the free site!
You’re right. It is a very nice box. However a a shoulder plane is very expensive.
Nice video, you are so luck to have a workshop like that, id love one like that
Wow! You're incredibly inspiring. Love it. Thank you.
interesting design nice and easy to batch out. i was particularly interested in the flocking. i haven't seen that here in nz and generally glue felt into the box which can be tricky to get perfect. and yes i have lots of off cuts which i periodically give away as firewood to clear out enough room for the next batch lol.
Hay, mi friend do you can say me, what is this woods ,his abrebecion is (Bol, can, ph, prw), please.
Absolutely beautiful!!
So I have made these but I am still having a terible time with the barrel hinges. Is there any other tips you might have? I use the same hinges you are using. I really want to improve with these hinges.
same here... i ended up having to drill the holes deeper than .3" so that they would fit; otherwise, the gap in the back was too big
Can someone help me understand what that black powder is or at least the name so I can find the info myself. Thx
