I heard she was abused as a young child to the point when she was found at the age of three she was unable to speak, her adoptive mom had her go to a therapist to speak and they taught her through singing. (or so I read somewhere) Also, she used to like to yodel. I did see a video where she was yodeling.

(translated as "You are Super") and it is for children who have found themselves without parental care at some point in life. According to the programme, Diana was abused by her biological mother until around the age of 3 years, and ended up in an orphanage. While there, a massage nurse named Irina Ponik took care of her, and a strong bond was formed, to the extent that a year afterward Diana was adopted by Irina, and Irina has been her "Mom" ever since. It seems that for the first year or so Diana would hardly speak, and singing lessons were recommended, and the rest is history. Diana has a haunting deep contralto voice which has shocked audiences from an early age. Diana is now with a loving family, and her music training goes from strength to strength. Since winning the show, she has received much support from Igor Krutoy, the judge with the bald head who pushed his green button last, and who is one of Russia's foremost composers and song writers. You may have seen him play piano for Dimash sometimes. Diana's cover of "Rechenka" a Russian folk song, on the same show in 2018 when she was only 14 is something else, and very much worth watching. She sings with the "tongue clench", with lowered soft palate, for nasality, as you picked up on. The voice actor for Kermit the Frog does the same thing and she may have been influenced by Cher and Shakira, as well. But she has such a command of the stage and her performance, doesn't she? "Rechenka" is a Russian folk song, I understand, and will jar your ideas of vocal pedagogy, Coach! And she appears to generate her "r-r-r-r-" timbre in a very healthy way! That's what's so stunning, in a youngster, and she's going to demonstrate some skillful control between chest and head tones (that's an understatement--don't want to tip you off to what you're going to hear). Then, don't forget to go to Dimash's YT channel and review "Ogni Pietra" (Arnau concert version), the cantata written specifically for him by Russian icon, Igor Krutoy (the bald guy who was frozen in his chair and took most of the song to register his approval). The way she is singing is very unique, even in Russia. Her voice comes from the very back of her throat, with a wide open mouth. When you yawn while talking is similar to this, just that she is singing that way. She got titled as "the Shaman Girl" because everyone IS actually reminded of shaman chantings from ethnical siberian tribes. Her most amazing performance would probably be "Rechenka" from the same show, when she was 15. Judges got literally enchanted. Also, with the song "Human" you get the whole shaman feeling. I personally also love her performance of "This Is A Man's World" from the previous season of the show, when she was 14. There she totally looks like a child but has already this kind of voice.

Just a little background on her vocals since you were wondering. When she as younger she was put into singing lessons to help with a speech impediment, and through that, she got into yodeling, which is how her voice accustomed just a breathy, laryngeal sound. So unique❤️

HI Sam that was great reaction & breakdown. Of all the covers on this song 3 are my favorites. The originals from Chris back in 89 ( which I fell in love with back then) Then there's Diana Ankudinova I love how she took & made a big production without letting it overwhelm her & she turned it into a great Pop song in a modern way with a little Russian folk song style to it.I believe Diana is a either a contralto profondo or a low contralto. Than there's Angelina Jordan's arrangement & composition of it, she went the exact opposite direction completely redone it & just her on her little keyboard in her room playing 3-4 cords & just telling a story using her voice just amazing. Thank you for your reaction to Diana Ankudinova. Diana actually turned 16 on 31st May 2019, but was indeed 15 at the time of this performance. The show she is on here is Ты супер! (translated as "You are Super") and it is for children who have found themselves without parental care at some point in life. According to the programme, Diana was abused by her biological mother until around the age of 3 years, and ended up in an orphanage. While there, a massage nurse named Irina Ponik took care of her, and a strong bond was formed, to the extent that a year afterward Diana was adopted by Irina, and Irina has been her "Mom" ever since. It seems that for the first year or so Diana would hardly speak, and singing lessons were recommended, and the rest is history. Diana has a haunting deep contralto voice which has shocked audiences from an early age. Diana is now with a loving family, and her music training goes from strength to strength. Since winning the show, she has received much support from Igor Krutoy, the judge with the bald head who pushed his green button last, and who is one of Russia's foremost composers and song writers. You may have seen him play piano for Dimash sometimes. Diana's cover of "Rechenka" a Russian folk song, on the same show in 2018 when she was only 14 is something else, and very much worth watching. She sings with the "tongue clench", with lowered soft palate, for nasality, as you picked up on. The voice actor for Kermit the Frog does the same thing and she may have been influenced by Cher and Shakira, as well. But she has such a command of the stage and her performance, doesn't she? "Rechenka" is a Russian folk song, I understand, and will jar your ideas of vocal pedagogy, Coach! And she appears to generate her "r-r-r-r-" timbre in a very healthy way! That's what's so stunning, in a youngster, and she's going to demonstrate some skillful control between chest and head tones (that's an understatement--don't want to tip you off to what you're going to hear). Then, don't forget to go to Dimash's YT channel and review "Ogni Pietra" (Arnau concert version), the cantata written specifically for him by Russian icon, Igor Krutoy (the bald guy who was frozen in his chair and took most of the song to register his approval). Diana won it at age 14. This year, the channel announced the Super Season of the contest, she participated in it for the second time and won the Grand Prix.

Btw, that bald guy in "last" judge chair is Igor Krutoy, very respected and famous russian composer. I would dare to say he is new Tchaikovsky of our era. You may remember him from few Dimash songs, he cooperate with him a lot.
This video is from russian competition series "You are super!". Diana won (obviously :D ) and Igor give her apartment in Moscow (not cheap thing especially in Moscow), that she can study on musical academy and get proper singing training.

loving you trying to find the voiceplacement Sam :) also very helpful! I can sing the same notes but have not placed my voice like that (classical background), I do feel that it can be also harmful for voice. I know that Diana has also very normal voice, I have heard somewhere else.

Hello, Sam! You can see this: ruclips.net/video/35Dwo4QVLqs/видео.html This is a traditional Russian song and Diana is pretty amazing. Yes, she uses Russian traditional technics of signing but something else too - some sort of magic power that I can explain.
The way she is singing is very unique, even in Russia. Her voice comes from the very back of her throat, with a wide open mouth. When you yawn while talking is similar to this, just that she is singing that way. She got titled as "the Shaman Girl" because everyone IS actually reminded of shaman chantings from ethnical siberian tribes.
Her most amazing performance would probably be "Rechenka" from the same show, when she was 15. Judges got literally enchanted. Also, with the song "Human" you get the whole shaman feeling.
I personally also love her performance of "This Is A Man's World" from the previous season of the show, when she was 14. There she totally looks like a child but has already this kind of voice.

Just a little background on her vocals since you were wondering. When she as younger she was put into singing lessons to help with a speech impediment, and through that, she got into yodeling, which is how her voice accustomed just a breathy, laryngeal sound. So unique❤️

The last guy is Maestro Igor Krutoy who is a great composer and teacher in Russia. He composed Dimash's Love of Tired Swans, Mademoiselle Hyde, and the current Ogni Pietra. I imagine Igor works with her. I could be wrong.
