Notice how absolutely brilliant the arrangement, band, staging, lighting and costume are. The musicians & technicians knew what they had and poured their absolutely great hearts into showcasing a girl who had nothing but pain in early life. They intended all four chairs to turn. There would be no ignoring her. The audience would demand it. The judges could not refuse them. No doubt these Russians had heard shamanic Siberian and Nordic and polyphonic Central Asian sounds, so none of that was unusual to them. Russians are the masters of all emotive music in my opinion. But to put all their skills in service of disadvantaged children...don't ever say there was no positive legacy from Russian Orthodoxy or Communism. These kinds of events are how we hear what is universally human. And it will always come from people who were thrown in the garbage.

i saw a home video of her in a recording studio singing derniere danse. After nailing it in one take she lets out a yell of relief and joy. I have never heard a yell like it, it was almost other worldly and very powerful and loud.

I see others have made recommendations here, I second "Rechenka" (little river) which is a great performance of a traditional Russian folk song, so I have read. Rivers are supposedly gateways to the spirit world so the song has some spooky elements. And evidence that Diana was a successful competitive yodeler as a younger child. If you are okay with rock music, I'd suggest Rainbow "Stargazer" sung by Ronnie James Dio. His voice control and phrasing seems almost operatic to me. If you dare venture into progressive metal, I'd suggest Jinjer "Pisces live session" - just beware, it's a studio session rather than "raw live" audio. The vocalist is Tatiana Shmaylyuk and she has some interesting singing techniques. She has... range, power, lots of fans. She'll blow your socks off. Subbed.

It's decades of pain and lost opportunity evoked ..by a FIFTEEN YEAR OLD. How? HOW? I am in awe of her. That final whisper exceeded Lara Fabian for emotional power. That wasn't confusion you felt at the end. It hit you. Really hard. This track changes what music is, for those who get it.

Keep also in mind that she is a skillful yodeler and it is not easy to track larynx tricks on them when they try to color their sound. Always love seeing singers react to Diana. She was 15 in this video. The show is called "You are super" and is for disadvantaged children to showcase their talents. Diana was on her twice .. first time at age 14 which she won .. then when the show had past winners return .. a Grand Championship I suppose (this song is from that) which she also won .. at 15. Heads up for Rechenca that others have mentioned .. it is based on old Russian folk/pagen stories and songs where a young bride to be goes to the river .. in pagan Russia where the living and worlds of death meet to speak to her dead mother and ask for blessings for the wedding. There you see river spirits dancing around her while she sings. She is 17 now and turns 18 May 31 and is in her first year at GITIS .. similar to Juilliard's in the US.
Notice how absolutely brilliant the arrangement, band, staging, lighting and costume are. The musicians & technicians knew what they had and poured their absolutely great hearts into showcasing a girl who had nothing but pain in early life.
They intended all four chairs to turn. There would be no ignoring her. The audience would demand it. The judges could not refuse them.
No doubt these Russians had heard shamanic Siberian and Nordic and polyphonic Central Asian sounds, so none of that was unusual to them. Russians are the masters of all emotive music in my opinion. But to put all their skills in service of disadvantaged children...don't ever say there was no positive legacy from Russian Orthodoxy or Communism. These kinds of events are how we hear what is universally human. And it will always come from people who were thrown in the garbage.

Yes, that is her voice. And you're wright to think that her tone of voice it's similar to Cher... Their head bone structure makes that resonance sound of their amazing well trained laringe. Vocal cords is another thing, without a very well trained laringe muscle (like Dimash) they would not be so fantastic and exclusive singers. I think in this voice contest she was 15 yo. ( born 31/May/2003)... she has a very sad and dramatic life history...
Luckily, after so much, she had her chance to work, educated and be like this. Russian and Asian music schools are the best and the more exigent of the world. Only the best raw jewels are admitted.

i saw a home video of her in a recording studio singing derniere danse. After nailing it in one take she lets out a yell of relief and joy. I have never heard a yell like it, it was almost other worldly and very powerful and loud.

I really enjoyed your reaction - Diana Ankudinova is one of those rare performers who just stopped me in my tracks. I see others have made recommendations here, I second "Rechenka" (little river) which is a great performance of a traditional Russian folk song, so I have read. Rivers are supposedly gateways to the spirit world so the song has some spooky elements. And evidence that Diana was a successful competitive yodeler as a younger child.
If you are okay with rock music, I'd suggest Rainbow "Stargazer" sung by Ronnie James Dio. His voice control and phrasing seems almost operatic to me.
If you dare venture into progressive metal, I'd suggest Jinjer "Pisces live session" - just beware, it's a studio session rather than "raw live" audio. The vocalist is Tatiana Shmaylyuk and she has some interesting singing techniques. She has... range, power, lots of fans. She'll blow your socks off.

She can manipulate her epiglotis (Opne/close) like also do Cher or Shakira.... of course im not an expert. I can be wrong but is the most accurate theory i think.
She has said in interviews that she is most comfortable in her lower range. She competed in yodeling contests when she was a preteen and has been singing forever. I guess her big exposure came on the show where you saw her.

There is a lot already that she has done and each song offers an incredible and unique experience. But you definitely need to hear more to really understand how many vocal techniques she can use and how versatile in terms of song style she is.
Her tone is going to always dominate your first listen. But the more you hear this...the more the emotional expression dominates.

Welcome to Diana’s world. You will have to learn of her sad childhood first if someone hasn’t already explained it the comments. To better understand her and her music I suggest reacting to her song “Yodel time”. It was done at a prior music show, none of the judges turned around but if you watch it further the audience gave her a standing ovation. They demanded she be put on the show but there was a big scandal that came upon this very audition. Next you will want to see “Human” very low register followed by “Rechenka” which was done when she was 14 yrs old and one of her most note worthy performances done in Russian language(you will want to get the English lyrics to be able to understand the song. Then “Daniere Danase” which is done in French. Then a song done in Arabic called “Helwa Ya Baladi”. She has many other songs that you will be blown away with. Did Diana do an interview and tell how much of this register she is born with, and how much she devloped ? There are very few with big registers, but there are some. But yes, she is a phenom. This is extraordinary.

Rechenka is based on a Russian folksong about a young betrothed orphan girl who goes to the river, the boundary between the living and the dead, to ask her mother's blessing for her marriage.

Ironically, Diana herself was an orphan who was abused and abandoned by her alcoholic mother. Because of this beginning her speech was very undeveloped and she was given singing lessons to help improve her speech. Her talents was quickly recognized and the rest is history.
She might be the next step of human evolution or was born with a physiological deformity that happened to work in a positive manner. That aside , when Diana vocalizes her internal energy there is this metaphysical energy that accompanies her vocal that my soul connects and feeds off from it , making me just feel physically , emotionally, and spirituality refreshed by the end of it. There is no top 5 for me, there is only her. Amazing. THE ONLY ONE OF HER KIND. Truly a treasure among us. Her beautiful vanity compliments my eyes. ciao. Great great reaction!

Hello Jess thanks for your reaction on Diana. I think for you to understand better her timber and low singing, try listening to her rendition on "Human" on the same show. Keep also in mind that she is a skillful yodeler and it is not easy to track larynx tricks on them when they try to color their sound. On "Rechenka" on the same show, she incorporates some wonderful yodeling and flips.
