Let me address some of the combat issues that I mentioned in the video. Firstly it has been brought to my attention that some weapons (not many) have stun or snare abilities which in the grand scheme of things makes no difference to the dreadful combat of this game. The problem is that if you like playing a caster and some guy with a sword gets in your face it's pretty much game over due to your very limited casting abilities. You can't snare or stun them unless you switch out of being a caster and use a totally different weapon, the trouble with that is switching weapons in a fight is incredibly clunky, you literally have to spam the alt weapon button and then it eventually works. This is not a good combat mechanic but as you are limited to three, yes three skill abilities per weapon you have no choice. Then there is the uncancellable attack animations, fair enough if you weald a huge two handed hammer I doubt many people could cancel an overhead swing of that once you are committed. But you suffer the same issues if you have a one handed light rapier sword, once you commit to an attack the opponent just simply hits dodge then you are screwed for 2 seconds attacking thin air while they smack you with a couple of light attacks. Again, how is that a good combat mechanic? I have never in my life seen an MMO with so little skill as this game, spam light + heavy attacks while you wait for your THREE abilities to come off cool down, are they serious? Three bloody abilities per weapon, this makes the game incredibly boring when compared to games like World of Warcraft (not retail WOW). When you look at WOW TBC which imo was WOW at it's best you have about 20 abilities on the Mage and you use most of them in one on one fights. It made you felt amazing sheeping them then hitting your haste buff and hammering them with FB, IL then FN + Blink FB, IL, Summon pet, then Pets FN, IL, COC, FB then ice block, cold snap, FN, Blink, FB, IL Sheep, Evocation, FB, IL, FN, COC, IL win and thats against melee, if you face another magic class you have dampen magic, silence and I also forgot the two trinkets that you will deffo be using. I probably missed a few out it's been 15 years since I played a 70 mage but it went something like that. Compare that to the pitiful combat in NW and I have to say am not sure WTF the devs were thinking with this game, I don't think they actually know what they want to do with it. I doubt if I will bother with this on release, sure it's fun gathering stuff and building a house etc but as a PvP MMO it's shocking imo.
@@avfx watch jayz two cents he did a video on this issue this morning. very unlikely it kills your card. he tested it for 3 hours plus trying to intentionally kill the evga 3090 and couldnt replicate the issue
I like the video and but I have to disagree on the combat. I’d much rather have 6 abilities that serve a specific function and require you to commit to an action weighing out the risk/reward. For me there’s little excitement in pressing 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 for 90% of combat encounters. If other MMO’s follow the WoW formula, they’ll just end up being worst versions of WoW. Might have gone into this one with the “It’s not a good MMO if it doesn’t follow X tropes of MMO’s” approach. I’m all for beefing up the magic system, adding more animation interrupts, adding mounts, better starting areas, but I don’t think these are the requirements of a good game. If every developer plays it safe and copies what we know already works, we end up with a saturated market of reboots and look-alikes. WoW has changed drastically over its lifetime and had a rough start, fingers crossed Amazon keeps pushing this game forward into its own golden age.
Mac, recently I had to undergo vocal chord surgery and my father died while I was in the surgery from a heart attack. I was sad for a while, and I decided to watch something to cheer me up. I found your channel, and I burst out loud laughing so many times and you really got me through that time. Thank you
I actually really like the combat in this game, but I can see why it may not appeal to some people. It does need some polish with the animations but I vastly prefer action combat to the lock-on autohit trash you find in most MMOs.
Yeah seriously. What’s better, standing and auto attacking a mob with a red circle around it or actually pressing some buttons and being able to move around. MMOs always have shitty combat, it shouldn’t be the main system it’s judged upon.
@@Layman927 I do think Mack is correct that the lack of abilities sucks (6 skill slots is stupid. Should have at the very least 8) and that the animations can feel clunky. But I prefer this combat way more than classic WoW, FF14 or whatever. I don't want a 20-30 button long rotation that I just do over and over again while standing around and eating a sandwich in one hand while I use a macro or lazily go through my long hotbar.
Well from my knowledge if they can't get free flowing right they might go to tab targeting but the main problem with this style of combat is a: starts becoming unbalanced with skills and b: ping and that will be the biggest oof of the combat if that ping is bad you are fucked bdo (black desert online) also does this combat (much better I might add from my understanding) but those problems exist in that game....that and the p2w nature of it
@@theninja2k14 yeah I agree BDO’s combat is the only thing it has going for it, but it’s also boring just one shotting mobs with aoe attacks. I like the idea of tab target that’s got some degree of movement, which I think is what they’re going for. Ashes of Creation seems to be trying the same thing. But at the end of the day an MMO really just needs to have average, serviceable gameplay. MMOs live and die on the world and player interaction.
@@thegreatestpepe see I love classic wow because of how immersed I get in the world and how much player interaction there is. I look past the combat because it’s just another vehicle to drive player interaction. I think classic wow is one of the most social mmos ever, which is why it became such a phenomenon. Also, leveling professions and even creating new characters just to level other professions in order to work the auction house never gets old to me.
I really liked the combat, adds a sense of where the more mechanically skilled players can take on higher level enemies and come out on top. Do agree though more skills would be nice
@@xythiera7255 because spamming light attack is inefficient. This game's combat system is more reactionary, having to focus on dodging and timing counters as much as you worry about setting up ability combinations. You don't just mindlessly shuffle through a rotation like in most tab target MMOs
I agree with everything you said. But there's also a part of me that is having a blast playing this game. Honestly for $40 and no monthly sub, I've spent more for worse.
@@skinnahxx He played WoW back in the day.. I've played other mmos as well and he's right, this game is unfinished, and the people behind it incompetent. They designed this game with "dark souls combat" in mind, then they changed that halfway through to "regular mmo style combat", and now they ended up with a system that does neither (well).
@@jesperburns I quite enjoy the pvp combat in this game i am not a huge fan of pve though but i find its more because not being able to block while in an attack animation which is fair because of pvp but with fast and bad animations for pve enemys it makes it annoying
Damn. All the reasons you listed as finding it boring, I actually enjoyed it for. Like idk why you would want the same "old tried and true" mmo combat? It's been done to death and those games are still available to play
@Legion i mean sure if you like lock target then move and click x ability at x time sure stay with the old games New World looks like its trying for a more involved dynamic combat system in which you have to actually aim at your target instead of letting the UI do that for you.
@@JetfireQuasar There's just one problem with this type of manual aim combat, the game takes place on a massive server and latency is a thing that exists.
I agree I actually like the combat in New world it feels new to me. It seems to me people forget that mmos are built over years and years of people playing and updates being added to the game frequently. Imagine mmos like wow or runescape when they first came out they were much more sht then compared to how new world is being released but over time with updates became some of the greatest mmos still played to this day.. Updates will come to New world overtime and they will keep adding more things to all aspects of the game, most people are making it seem like the game is just going to be what they release forever and that they will never add new things to the game that we haven't even thought about yet..
Yeah, I really enjoyed the combat too! Even though there's PvE (first dungeon was really challenging and fun) -- most of the systems are geared around PVP -- so being animation locked makes sense, allowing you to punish folks for being careless and just spamming abilities at you. I'm also kinda worried there are not enough abilities -- although they've stated that they're looking to expand the combat trees. But in response to the video maker: cc abilities do exist on certain weapons; if you want to be a ranged character, you can pair it with a weapon that focuses more on debuffs or mobility abilities. I found PVP fights in the woods incredibly tense and rewarding. I think this game could be a real banger if they don't bungle the shop and rollout.
I don't agree regarding the combat part, I think it's very refreshing. The fact that you can actually properly miss an attack with a hammer (which is a heavy thing, so the animation should be long) makes it very skill based imo. That said, it's very hard to catch up with people who don't want to fight, hopefully that can improve somehow.
Yup, was looking forward to this review. Unfortunately seems that Mac fixated on a few things and formed a bunch of very uninformed opinions. I've played the old beta from months back, and much of what he says on combat doesn't match up - I assume it's not gone super downhill since then.
@@ardentword508 He isnt just making up the combat locking system so your point is moot to be honest. If you like the game that is up to you but its a fair review.
Combat is actualy deep in its own way you gotta have skill … aim timing dodge block, its only 6 skills but at least its not 40 skills all of then target spamable… combat actualy need skill. And there is debuffs and CC like Stuns and Stuff i think your Passing a wrong Message to ppl and you ddnt even scratch the surfice off the game and potencial. Oh well opinions…
Can we get a 10 minute cut of the more heat you get, the more rep you get banger please. It's quickly replacing the bell as my favourite part of your videos man lol.
Yeah I searched Twitch on the day the beta dropped and there were hundreds of them offering in game drops to people, am really sick of this kind of bullshit and fuck the streamers that participated, you are all part of the problem.
Surely that's the case with nearly all betas. If they produce the beta a few weeks before launch, it's unlikely to fundamentally change before full release. Perhaps it may update further down the line, who knows. All we can do is judge it for what it is right now.
@@WorthABuyreviews Yeah 100% agree, having exclusive skins and content isn't good for the customers in anyway, everyone should have access & it shouldn't just be used for marketing & making huge profits of, would love to see one AAA studio have true passion for a project rather than business men/woman getting involved with it
@@WorthABuyreviews Well said. Why I don't watch anything on Twitch really, most of it is just a cesspool of sellouts and people a**licking these companies and praising them. This MMO is just another moneygrab, like any MMO recently for the most part.
I love you Mac, but this definitely sounds like a “mad cuz you bad” type of situation. I absolutely love the combat this game has, and and sold on the game. Hooked to the beta. It’s okay to have different opinions haha
Completely disagree where combat is concerned, it's a breathe of fresh air to have an MMO with action combat rather than tab targetting, it needs some work but I much prefer it.
Exactly. The core combat is my issue with pretty much all MMOs. It's so dull and has no skill to it. Just "lock on target and cycle thru your 10 skills until someone dies"
@@nikobaehr3638 How does it have skill? And how does it is fresh air when it’s so similar to ESO? Because you have to…sorry…aim for your enemy? This it what makes a game need skill for you? Do you know moorhuhn? There you have to aim too and it’s the dumbest most casual game you can imagine. Aiming is not what is „skill“ in an mmo. And did you know, facing in the different direction in an mmo doesn’t hit the enemy too. I can understand when tab target is too abstract for 2021 but this just sounds desperate.
Really, where, be specific, class, ability? I never said Block was not in the game, nor did I mention dodges, I specifically mentioned Snares like sunning or holding in place an opponent. So for example, Mage in WOW can frost nova, Rogue can cheap shot, warrior can charge. Where are all the abilities for New World.
Yeah, all those are in the game. They are in different weapon trees. I agree there's not enough weapons in the game though, should be like 30 at least if you aren't going to have classes in the game.
There is a snare... But you can't use it on humans, unless they are totally blind. Also, all knock-downs and stuns are just for one sec, you can run after that. There is only one good tactic - 10vs1 =D
@@WorthABuyreviews I'm only a noob as well but the ones I've found are the ice glove has a couple aoe slow blizzard kind of abilities. The musket in the trapper tree has a trap that roots and snares, the spear has a throw that knocks down and a sweep that knocks down and stuns. There's a couple charge like abilities with the axe I've seen people use.
Regardless of whatever Mack may have "missed" in the review, having 3 abilities per your two equipped weapons is factual and all I needed to hear to make my decision on this one lol
Also wait dude… If you are a caster you are encourage to talent into different trees. Bows and muskets benefit greatly from the stuns and mobility of spear. Fire staves have a knock back and can swap to rapiers if they need the defenses. Ice Gauntlet is literally frost mage without a blink.
If you dislike too much fighting, you can do town missons and get your life skills up and if you pick good missons with good xp you can lvl up really fast
Ah well. People hated the Elder Scrolls Online beta and it turned into a great game over time. New World might be worth another look in two years as well. I only watched it on Twitch but it looked like a F2P MMORPG to me.
They made a decent rust-esque mmo faction pvp game where u lose gear and shit, then did a 360 and turned it into a casual boringfest. Then they delayed for a whole year and didn't fix any problems, and ignored and acted hostile towards the complaints they received from their own alpha testers.
The faction system is going to kill this game. I've seen it myself in the Beta. If faction sizes are imbalanced, then one faction will dominate the entire map
I saw something similar in Perfect World. One lot dominated until it got so big that internal fighting began as people grumbled and fell out, then the faction broke apart. I made an analogy that the factions were like an upside down pyramid. As they grew they eventually lost their balance and toppled over. Then a new faction took over until it fell over and it became such a toxic system were people spoke in the past tense...Oh i used to be in that faction and they were a bunch of...blah blah blah...it became a socially ugly game to play, people bitching about other players and mostly it was because one lot dominated and every smaller group hated them. And when that large group fell apart, the other groups had that schadenfeude moment were they loved every moment of their demise. That cycle just rose and fell and caused animosity among the player base until people just left and played something less toxic.
i lead 3 companies on my server and all the factions are pretty easily even with 3 territories each. it’s requiring so much communication. i can only imagine how unbalanced a server is without all the management we are doing
My faction is heavily outnumbered and we’re actually doing really well through coordination. But yeah there definitely needs to be some kind of regulation.
FF 14 is playable with controller and you can instantly access 48 skills in your skillbar. I'd rather say the devs understiamtes the abilities of their users.
@@WeAreGhuraba ESO has the same limitation, you have a lot of skills but you can have only a few active skills + ultimate and to make it less clunky they made an ability to switch between two different builds. In regards to FF14, it is not a real time online game.
I heard someone talk about this game the other day and they mentioned "rep". I knew Mack would start rapping during his first video on this game and I have not been disappointed. I teared up a bit I was laughing so hard Never change Mack, we love you
You can indeed stun, stagger and block your enemies. There are skills and mechanics around that. Look for Ser Medieval's videos on advanced combat and on weapon skills and you'll see that Mack is wrong about this. My guess is that he just spammed left click and half-heartedly tried to combo a few skills here and there and is thinking that's what the game has to offer in terms of combat. Love your stuff, Mack, but you are wrong on this one.
@@Garycarlyle just try it out yourself im lvl 30 now and was doing 2 hours pvp straight today and i tell you it is rly not refined and very spamm heavy. IF the dodges and stagger effects would right properly yes we can talk again and you can say that it doesn't hold any water but if you want i can even record my stuff and show you litteraly how spam clicking in pvp works
I noticed in your Syndicate rewards they are using the same item models as the rest of the factions just with different colors. This is a issue throughout the whole game. They are re-using models everywhere. Like weapons, you will see the same weapon model all the way through level 20 and you get one that looks tiny a bit different. Usually its just different color. This was a issue a year ago in the previous test as well which they havent done anything about.
Always trust Worth A Buy when he says a game is good, always double check when he says a game is bad. He possesses some very weird prejudices that sometimes dont reflect the actual state of the game. I think this is one of those cases.
I really enjoy the combat, took a fort with four friends last night ended up with a three way skirmish that was really engaging. I’ve got Great Axe + Hatchet, so I’m very much the initiator, gaining movement speed from abilities and the king charge of the great axe. I would say the game lacks a lot of CC but that’s fine, it’s good for the design space to be open. It feels like they got some designers who actually care about PvP.
In my opinion, you have not played enough of the game to do this review. If you do combat correctly it does take skill it's just at low levels it doesn't take as much skill. The turkey missions your trying to take are to help the settlement so of course it's going to be tedious as killing turkeys.the faction missions your trying to take are randomised but you shouldn't need to have the same quests you just join them to their location then head to your location.
Not a full review was just a first Impression & after 16 hours it'd say you'd be able to talk about that, you shouldn't need to play over 9000 hours to then start enjoying a game, it should have you from the first moment
@@phillvallace yes true but half the things he mention are why this game is good. It's good because it isn't tab target. The world feel big and open because they don't have mounts. Yes there is not way to stun or interupt players but that's because back the the previous beta test (preview) people were stun locking people and they couldn't fight at. He mentions all these things that have reasons they are like it and it's better they are how they are. The main story quests don't take you to the same place again and again they take you to multiple places around the settlement you take them in. The faction missions are repetitive but that's because they're repeatable missions what do you expect.
@@heralias2441 right? They don’t like it because they don’t play mmos. Mack doesn’t even know that the weapons have different abilities and he’s trying to say the combat is bad lmao

Yet again, your videos stopped showing up in my feed and this time the "Bell" was disabled. Last time this happened I made SURE to enable the "Bell notifications". At least now I have a ton of videos I can binge watch.
Combat needs work but pretty sure there is more to it than you've seen. Beta Patch notes mention things like Slow, Root, Stun, DoTs, Debuffs, Staggers, Dodge, Block, etc. There's 7 status effects. It's not That shallow.
He didnt bothered to do his homework and after 16 hours lvl 16 :D he spend most of that time ranting his friends how its not wow 2 :D or i dont know how he can have only 16 lvl after 16 hours of playing thats like 2 - 3 days of playing for normal people who work for living :D this is basically not objective at all simple rant video no facts only opinions of WOW lover .....
@@youtubeisdead8153 Ehhh, I'd say it's 50/50. Combat probably could be deeper, that's a fair points imo - I'm just saying it isn't As as as the video makes out. It is more than just a console hack & slash, but less than a full on MMO. But it's maybe not going for the same hardcore MMO crowd either.
I have nearly the same experience. 17 hours in. + great graphics (sometimes some frame-drops, but that's OK) + great world, looks real and different areas everywhere + superb sound, the echo of the wood cracking etc is brilliant. + crafting is simple to do, yet fun and you can craft a loot of stuff - only 6 skills, 2 per weapon, not really great skills (but you can stun mobs with your shield btw) - combat is "de-sync" and sluggish, blocking isn't really responsive, you to block 1-2 seconds before the mob will hit you, hitting it directly for impact does nothing - quest are bad. you will really go to the same place six times in a row to open 6 boxen, take 6 sacks of stuff, kill 10 mobs. There are typical mmo quest, but on the same area? again and again? - no mounts, you run everywhere, you got fast travel but only every hour or for materials you have to collect. I guess I would get around 25h of fun out of it, would be bored after that. If they could rework the combat and quests, it would be cool. But it's release is very soon. Dunno if I buy it, I guess not.
There definitely are stuns and snares and knockdowns and interrupts and stuff. IDK how you missed them Mac :D There's also animation canceling for specific move combos. The combat in this is the ONLY reason I even agreed to try out an MMORPG. Because it's actually good and not the old school MMO style which just doesn't do it for me.
many ppl miss the point with new world that it doesn't try to copy the other MMO's combat style at all. It's more like dark souls put in an MMO type of action combat. Not your usual spam 3 skills per second fast paced combat. And i'm not saying it's better or worse, both style can be good, and i like both.
I got into the alpha or whatever about a year back and the combat was exactly as described totally atrocious, I didnt think there was any way they would release without making a new combat system, this mmo is dead on arrival, real shame how did they not know this would be a problem , the combat is the most critical thing
Do you play mmos? Most mmos just have a tab target system, except for ESO and BDO. ESO’s combat is a total meme and BDO’s combat is just flashy to distract from the total lack of gameplay. Combat is not going to make or break New World because combat isn’t the most important aspect of an mmo: social interaction is. New World will live or die based on how well it facilitates player interaction and growth, not on how “flashy” or “satisfying” the combat is.
@@Layman927 as a veteran ESO player who is on a break for a year or so now, ESO's combat is by far the most fun I've played. Yes, first 20 levels it can be abit slower, but it's incredibly skill based all the way through. The skill ceiling isn't how many macros you paid for on a keyboard, and how many guides you've read, but how much skill you have (and also how many guides you've read, but your build means nothing without skill) and how wel you know your character. The enemies are by far the most interesting from all MMOs I played aswell, tho overworld can be really easy sadly. But that is correct for most MMOs I've played. That's what places like Craglorn are for.
That's just what MMO's do. I would love to play ESO but the combat just feels so basic and bad, there is no visual feedback it's just watch your cooldowns.

I think he's very harsh In this review, I agree there should be more abilities and stuff but the core of the game is pretty good despite macks review here
I dont understand why, whenever a new mmo comes out there's always a group of people that want it to just be another WoW with a different skin, which has never worked out unless you count FFIV as a wow clone. there's probably alot that can be done to improve the current combat system in NewWorld, like animation cancels that was mentioned and a parry mechanic, but I think it would be a really boring idea to just implement another wow tab target combat system with 50 abilities only 7 of which you really use. I also think alot of the positives with this game were overlooked, like for instance the open world pvp is done quite well, with the player bounty system and the fact that there are no mounts in my opinion will make open world pvp alot more common because people wont be able to just mount up and run away. could be seeing that the best places to farm will have to be defended from time to time from other player like black desert which was a blast. I can understand most of the critisisms in this review but I think there is alot of potential in this game i dont think its a bad idea to try be a bit more positive.
like any other good skill based PVP game ever LOL but the MMO space has become the weird kind of auto target/skill refresh and memorize classes and abilities kind of loop that is just lame IMO
@Dylan Beck 16 hours isn't that much time to give a review of the game, and after watching this video it sounds like he didn't even play 16 minutes. "No way to stun or parry the enemy. Once they're in your face they're in your face. The combat is just crap guys." Anyone who has actually spent more than a couple of hours playing this game has realized that many weapons give you a cc option of some sort, or that dodging to reposition is a thing. This game's combat system isn't the old stale 'tab target and mindlessly shift through my rotation' system, you actually have to react and move around a lot to be effective. Obviously, that isn't everyone's cup of tea, but when you sound as ignorant as this guy it's hard to take any review he gives seriously. I don't understand why so many people out themselves as WoW fanboys everytime a new MMO comes out by giving half-assed reviews where they clearly haven't spent any time even attempting to learn the game 🤣🤣🤣
In some respects It's actually surprisingly similar to Valheim! with the no mounts but you can fast travel & you're chopping down trees and skinning animals and gather etc but obviously thats a survival game so it's the kind of thing you expect to be doing a lot lol even the combat is quite similar, i think this game might be better once you reach end game content but it's just a matter of how enjoyable it is to get to the end game... if i'm being honest i'm just looking for anything to scratch the MMO itch until the EU/NA release of LOST ARK!
I really doubt they have much of an endgame to speak of except for pvp. The game was originally a full loot pvp game only, and then apparently that didn't go so well so they delayed it and spent the last like 9 months turning it into a theme park mmo. Which likely means all the pve content is hastily put together, which means that the endgame probably barely exists if at all.
So please talk me through killing a rogue, Druid, Warrior, Warlock, hell any class at all using only blizzard and frostbolt. Allow me to educate you on how I do it and this is from remembering when I played on 15 years ago. Basically in a Mage fight you have to utilise FB with IL and FN then COC, FB, Blink, summon pet, FN (pets) FB, IL getting some nice crits against the frozen target remembering to hit icy veins to increase haste. When enemy gets to you hit up Ice barrier and if required Iceblock remembering to stay frozen until FN is up then FN + Blink and then start up FB, IL then hit sheep if they are still going so you can evocate all your mana back, it's a good trade off against sheep giving them a little bit health. Then cold snap resets all cooldowns and off you go again. This is not spamming rotations, it reacting to the enemy, you may need silence, trinkets and dampen magic depending on the class you face, it's all about timing, knowing what to do and yes it takes skill. You sir really don't know what you are talking about.
I don't know in this case but a beta doesn't always mean you're running the latest build, so 'maybe' some of these issues have been resolved. Even if this isn't great on day 1, hopefully it improves.
Judging by the description of the combat system, this game might actually be good. Spamming abilities by cooldowns like in WoW always felt unnatural to me. Also, Mr. Mac has never got and will never get the Japanese way of combat as it is done in Souls, Monster Hunter and so on. Some things just cannot be learned after some point.
@@tonytynebridge510 I prefer MMO's to be different. Also, according to Fextralife, there was similar combat system in Albion. Don't know if it is good or bad.
I'm convinced that devs aren't going to take risks on MMO's after seeing ones such as Daoc, Warhammer online, rift, etc all had subjectively better formulas than new stuff like this, yet declined in playerbase due to us looking for the next best thing. They honestly could release a current gen version of any of the ones mentioned above and I'd immediately give it a shot. Funny enough I believe there still is official or unofficial servers going for those.
There isn't enough time to make major changes because you've seen the source code and thus know all the variables and what classes inherit from what classes, the entire structure and flow of the game's code down to each and every line, and thus know exactly what they can do in the next few weeks versus what will take longer, right?
I normally really enjoy your videos; however, there's a lot of information in this one that is just simply wrong. I'm not talking about objective opinions on whether or not you enjoy the different aspects of the game. Nearly every weapon has some form of cc built in. Both the fire staff and gauntlet have cc and knock backs. As you progress throughout you will find that there's a ton of different weapons and combos that people are running.
Thanks for the video, Mack. I trust your opinion more than any publication or the hive mind of the masses. It's crazy how blatantly paid out most gaming review websites are and sometimes the hype/hate trains make me feel like I am taking crazy pills because I can't believe how different my perspective is (Resident Evil VII being the best example).
I thought the classic wow comment was a bit meh, yea you had lots of abilities but mage was 99.9% frostbolt spam lol and same for alot of other classes, yea you have a lot of moves but you didnt use 95% of them in raid/dungeons
The whole "no classes" aspect may sound cool, but it's not. When you give players that much control over their characters in MMOs, especially ones with a large PvP element, all that does is create cheese builds. It's already bad enough in some MMOs that do have classes. I've played a LOT of MMOs in my time and there is one factor present in every single one without exception. People will go to extreme lengths to cheese the mechanics into making unstoppable bullshit characters that will sit there and demolish an entire team of enemy players and not even get a scratch. I think an appropriate example would be Warhammer Age of Reckoning (There is a free version still live called Return of Reckoning, pretty fun and it's the full game.) Seeing as how this game is going for the PvP control area/assault strongholds stuff it's a fair comparison. That game has set classes and limits what you can do with a character but even then, I cannot even begin to count how many times I watched a single player wipe an entire warband (24 people) in literally not even 10 seconds and not even lose 1/4th of their health and I am not exaggerating. Now imagine about 10 players like that. There's usually 2-3, sometimes 4 warbands in the same area on both sides plus stragglers so at least 100 people. There are certain players and guilds who are just known by name to everyone on the server, pretty much all of them playing Destro, Orks. When they enter the fight, it's over, Order will not have a single victory in the day until most of those people or clans log off for the night. That was the running joke, "Order owns the night." because without the cheese players online, it's a pretty fair fight. Anyway this turned into me bitching about RoR more than the point I was trying to make, sorry. TL:DR: This will sound like it's completely antithetical to gaming as a whole, but with some games, players NEED to have hard limits to what they can and can't do. If not, it's not a fair fight and the people who are able to play 8 hours a day and do borderline quantum physics calculations to min max their gear and stats are the only people who will have fun. As far as MMOs go, I think LOTRO and SWTOR are the two best suited to casual play and both are still getting expansions and updates, if that's what you're looking for.
I think class-based systems are just innately more interesting since you will at least have the developers make the effort to differentiate classes to create different gameplay as opposed to classless systems which very often just throw a bunch of generic skills out there for you to mix and match.
Ror is garbage. The original devs made every class feel somewhat unique, but it made balancing the game a nightmare. As far as cheesing goes, that’s true for every game, even those with “16 classes.” People will always gravitate towards the easiest most oped class. Rift has 300+ possible combinations, but people use the same cookie cutter ones.
You have a good point, but i think people are equating the ability to freely change "classes" as a no-class system. The game doesn't force you to only use one weapon or group of weapons, however you can still onky use skills based on the weapons equipped and in your hand. Every game suffers from one weapon type being slightly better than the rest, but so far i hsve seen a pretty good variety being used and a lot more magic than this video would leave you to believe. Honestly the system reminds me more of how souls makes you decide on how to play based on where you put your points than the overstuffed macrofest that wow is.
Agree - free charakter building sounds awesome at first but when it comes to PvP what we will end up with is like 3-4 meta builds just dominating the rest. And then you have to either choose to adapt and build meta yourself or just accept that you will loose 90% of your fights .
If they add 1 more skill tree per weapon I think they could let you have 5 skills on each weapon, making it to 10 skills total as well as having the ability to parry with every melee weapon without the skills.
You should have tried out more weapons. For example, rapier has parry, stun, an attack that can be casted anytime to interrupt your current action, etc. Not every weapon is animation locked like you put it. Also, if it wasn't this way you could just spam everything and roll any time to evade, it would make combat too easy. Also, devs have said the reason for 3skills per weapon is so that they can put out more weapons more quickly. Hopefully eventually we will have more than 3 active skills per weapon.
Quest system feels ancient. Kill X wolves, even if you killed 20 on your way to the quest giver. It means you don't explore the world, just run to the quest hubs. And there's nothing stopping someone else from skinning your kills, so when they tell you to kill a rarer animal, like an elk, its just nearly impossible. The musket is terrible too. It should be iconic, but it ends up being a worse version of the bow. It costs a fortune in ammo, which has too many components to craft at lower level. The damage is nothing special, to justify the crappy long reload either.
I love the combat. It rewards actual skill and input over math algorithms and a load of abilities. You have to actually hit your head shots to be a good musketeer, and that's awesome.
@@Ashenwolf888 It's closer than you think - gw 1 had a limited pool per class, even if you multiclassed. New World has a smaller pool overall, but as that pool is based on a one to one ratio to the weapons they include the whole pool is accessible to all players. Each weapon has 6 abilities of which you can actively have 3. They already have a large roster of weapons at launch and have been clear that adding more weapons is one of their ongoing efforts to keep things fresh. Number of skills =/= good combat. They have paired skills that do a range of things alongside a really solid timing based combat system. When I'm fighting it's totally based on my own skill at managing to block or dodge when they attack, timing my skills correctly. I have a 'dodge' ability that is difficult to master as it means I miss their attack for a very short time - so should be used to dodge an attack I know is coming but I also have to direct it so I'm still in range of them during the dodge so I can land some strikes that get boosted as part of the skill. This is far more engaging than pressing a bunch of number keys (for me).
Totally disagree. GW1 skill system had a lot of depth and involved tactical planning based on far more than 8 skills you could select. Moreover, you could mix two classes' skills to create interesting builds to blend well with skills of other members of your team.
@@Ashenwolf888 Oops I didn't phrase it correctly. I meant that GW1 system is an epitome of a good skill system where every skill is unique, unlike WoW where you have 3 different variations of the same exact skill.
I agree with everything you said but there is actually one ability that stuns and it's for the spear weapon it stuns them for 2 ish seconds. But there definitely needs to be more stun abilities and better fluid combat AND precancel animation attacks
most genres are played out at this point tbh. strategy, fps, arpg, mmorpg... its all the same shit as it used to be. the difference is the first generation of serious gamers (mid-late 90's to early 2000's) are just burned out on it all. to all the little kiddies who dont have the time in yet, this stuff is still new and exciting
@@sly9263 yeah honestly the current gen of gamers just grew up. Video games lose a lot of the fun and intrigue they used to have as you get older and more jaded or critical. It takes more and more for people to suspend their disbelief the older they get.
@@Paelmoon Throw in an ability that all classes can use to cancel an animation, but can only be used once then you have to wait for the cooldown to cancel another animation. Maybe add 1 more skill to each weapon that you can use. That way you have a total of 8 skills. I like the idea of switching a weapon and having different skills kinda like Guild wars 2. I think the combat in this game could be great tbh. That being said he said 3 skills, but if you switch weapons in combat it's really 6.
@@Paelmoon Star wars galaxies(og)/Ultima online were classic mmo's that had some really badass features like playerbuilt cities/property ownership and customization, as well as not having a levels based system. What's needed is pretty straight forward, truly open world, enormous amounts of easter eggs/mini quests Ala westworld, player based economy, and tons of opportunities for status signalling and griefing/stealing/faction wars. That makes a perfect game. The combat systems involved in these games are played out. Copy Chivalry 2 combat and leave it at that.
to make the combat atleast OK rather fast instead of changing it all this late into development id say they shouldve implement a talent tree that changes your approach, where u can choose what type of character u want to be. basically vit/dex/strenght/int focused as a overall trait and with it it gives a single extra skill that is the parry/block/dodge/shield - ability and ofcourse make dual wielding and pistol + 1 handed a thing. add like 7 ore mage weapons cause its so tuned towards melee atm. then add mounts n pets and we got a game worth some time.
10:27 preferred pronouns they/them... They didn't give a fuck to add any meaningful quest content, or to have an enjoyable fight system, but they added preferred pronouns, because that's what gamers want.
Great video and I agree on most points. Not sure why all the negative comments. The man is just sharing his opinions. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience and opinions.
I'm sorry the game wasn't what you were hoping. I enjoy what I have played so far and I am reserving my opinions until I see what the end game is like post full launch
I've been playing for about 20 or so hours and I agree with most of what you said Mack, but I don't think it's fare to compare this game, which is based in a "action combat" style of MMORPG with something like WoW which is a Tab Targeting. I personally like the combat but I also feel it could be improved, just wanted to point the comparison out. Love your videos and I respect your opinion as anybody's :D
I would love to hear you talking about the Kickstarter MMO Crowfall that has released 2 weeks ago, but I am afraid it might not be good on your health...
That's how I felt after the preview last year. I was hoping to hear things improved to where it may be worth putting the pre-order back in. Oh well, other options on the horizon to keep watch on.
Having 3 abilities per 2 equipped weapons is true and that's garbage, like all those console looter shooter type games where theres a lack of buttons so 3 abilities always seems to be the design choice... Poooooop
Erm, you can interrupt (stuns like shield bash do it), you can block (unless you trade in your block right click for a throw, eg. hatchet). That is not to say "combat is good", the dodging/blocking is crappy and lag causes you to soak up damage (Wildstar had a much better action combat system for example).

@@Supadrumma441 yea that argument works against auto target with timed skills too ya know??
Yeah, I really enjoyed the combat too! Even though there's PvE (first dungeon was really challenging and fun) -- most of the systems are geared around PVP -- so being animation locked makes sense, allowing you to punish folks for being careless and just spamming abilities at you. I'm also kinda worried there are not enough abilities -- although they've stated that they're looking to expand the combat trees. But in response to the video maker: cc abilities do exist on certain weapons; if you want to be a ranged character, you can pair it with a weapon that focuses more on debuffs or mobility abilities.
The build up to heat = rep = bank was perfect
The faction system is going to kill this game. I've seen it myself in the Beta. If faction sizes are imbalanced, then one faction will dominate the entire map
easy resoulition, create faction limit as they do on blade in soul. it still allows one to have more, just not over a certain percentage.
That cycle just rose and fell and caused animosity among the player base until people just left and played something less toxic.
i lead 3 companies on my server and all the factions are pretty easily even with 3 territories each. it’s requiring so much communication. i can only imagine how unbalanced a server is without all the management we are doing
didnt kill planetside 2, was the best feature of planetside 2 actually. So shove your opinion in your uneducated ass
My faction is heavily outnumbered and we’re actually doing really well through coordination. But yeah there definitely needs to be some kind of regulation.
The reason why modern games have about 6 active abilities at the same time is controllers.
FF 14 is playable with controller and you can instantly access 48 skills in your skillbar. I'd rather say the devs understiamtes the abilities of their users.

I heard someone talk about this game the other day and they mentioned "rep". I knew Mack would start rapping during his first video on this game and I have not been disappointed. I teared up a bit I was laughing so hard
Never change Mack, we love you
The second I heard him say "Rep", I was anxiously waiting for the song lol
You can indeed stun, stagger and block your enemies. There are skills and mechanics around that. Look for Ser Medieval's videos on advanced combat and on weapon skills and you'll see that Mack is wrong about this. My guess is that he just spammed left click and half-heartedly tried to combo a few skills here and there and is thinking that's what the game has to offer in terms of combat.
Love your stuff, Mack, but you are wrong on this one.
atm you can spam click your enemy he can't do shit about it only maybe dash out if he is even able
That wasnt his main point. So your rebuttal only holds so much water.

I have nearly the same experience. 17 hours in.
+ great graphics (sometimes some frame-drops, but that's OK)
+ great world, looks real and different areas everywhere
+ superb sound, the echo of the wood cracking etc is brilliant.
+ crafting is simple to do, yet fun and you can craft a loot of stuff
- only 6 skills, 2 per weapon, not really great skills
(but you can stun mobs with your shield btw)
- combat is "de-sync" and sluggish, blocking isn't really responsive, you to block 1-2 seconds before the mob will hit you, hitting it directly for impact does nothing
- quest are bad. you will really go to the same place six times in a row to open 6 boxen, take 6 sacks of stuff, kill 10 mobs.
Agree. You have to actually be deliberate with your attacks.
many ppl miss the point with new world that it doesn't try to copy the other MMO's combat style at all. It's more like dark souls put in an MMO type of action combat. Not your usual spam 3 skills per second fast paced combat.
And i'm not saying it's better or worse, both style can be good, and i like both.
Your songs are always amazing! Mix master Mac coming in hot with the heat and the rep!

6:10 thats a bad memory since mages had 20 abilities but only used blizzard and frostbolt

@@MetalGamer666 bdo has action combat and still gives you a lot of abilities

Thanks to WaB. 16 mind-boring hours saved. Another pass.
There isn't enough time to make major changes because you've seen the source code and thus know all the variables and what classes inherit from what classes, the entire structure and flow of the game's code down to each and every line, and thus know exactly what they can do in the next few weeks versus what will take longer, right?
I actually really like the combat in this game, instead of the boring standing stuff of wow.
Mage had 20 plus abilities? 20 different frostbolt ranks?
I thought the classic wow comment was a bit meh, yea you had lots of abilities but mage was 99.9% frostbolt spam lol and same for alot of other classes, yea you have a lot of moves but you didnt use 95% of them in raid/dungeons
only the bad ones didnt.
@@The_Noticer. Bad ones use something other than frostbolt. Frostbolt is the mage rotation
It was like this with most classic chars. Spam 1-3 abilities. Retail wow requires a bit more of you.
Agreed with you all the way. I think this game needs another 6 months to a year.
I think an appropriate example would be Warhammer Age of Reckoning (There is a free version still live called Return of Reckoning, pretty fun and it's the full game.)
Seeing as how this game is going for the PvP control area/assault strongholds stuff it's a fair comparison.
Well reaearched, well thought out and well said 👏
Ror is garbage.
Combat is the best part about this game lol PVP is fun
No its not.
I thought this would be a single player game and was pumped for it lol.
The hunt for the next MMO continues
LOTRO came out with some cool new progressing classic servers. Treebeard and Shadowfax
@@skinnahxx He's spot on though.
I love the combat. It rewards actual skill and input over math algorithms and a load of abilities. You have to actually hit your head shots to be a good musketeer, and that's awesome.
WoW is a poor comparison of how many skills this game should have. Let's talk about GW1 skill system.
What are you talking about? Gw1 had loads of ability choices. Just only a few you could equip at a time. Its different.

Sounds like the same kind of quests every mmorpg uses, but with even more walking. The genre needs some serious disruption.
most genres are played out at this point tbh. strategy, fps, arpg, mmorpg... its all the same shit as it used to be. the difference is the first generation of serious gamers (mid-late 90's to early 2000's) are just burned out on it all. to all the little kiddies who dont have the time in yet, this stuff is still new and exciting
@@sly9263 yeah honestly the current gen of gamers just grew up. Video games lose a lot of the fun and intrigue they used to have as you get older and more jaded or critical. It takes more and more for people to suspend their disbelief the older they get.
Well I'm not shocked it is that generic given the development hell and a complete rewrite to a more atypical mmo.
@@Paelmoon Throw in an ability that all classes can use to cancel an animation, but can only be used once then you have to wait for the cooldown to cancel another animation. I think the combat in this game could be great tbh. That being said he said 3 skills, but if you switch weapons in combat it's really 6.
@@Paelmoon Star wars galaxies(og)/Ultima online were classic mmo's that had some really badass features like playerbuilt cities/property ownership and customization, as well as not having a levels based system. to make the combat atleast OK rather fast instead of changing it all this late into development id say they shouldve implement a talent tree that changes your approach, where u can choose what type of character u want to be.
basically vit/dex/strenght/int focused as a overall trait and with it it gives a single extra skill that is the parry/block/dodge/shield - ability
and ofcourse make dual wielding and pistol + 1 handed a thing.
add like 7 ore mage weapons cause its so tuned towards melee atm.
then add mounts n pets and we got a game worth some time.

Just checked out some gameplay and yeah if he'd play that game the video would needs quite a few bells
That's how I felt after the preview last year. I was hoping to hear things improved to where it may be worth putting the pre-order back in. Oh well, other options on the horizon to keep watch on.
the fight section isn't true, u can stun, root, knock down and parry
i dont think he tried many weapons before making this video lol
Having 3 abilities per 2 equipped weapons is true and that's garbage, like all those console looter shooter type games where theres a lack of buttons so 3 abilities always seems to be the design choice... Poooooop
First impressions.. Mac will own that mistake in the review :-)
No way to stun? Did you even play the game?
@@eyel5616 seems like it.
@@eyel5616 Yeah, obvs a hater innit. I mean, that's exactly what grown men do - randomly hate computer games. Super logical.
