  • This video explores the idea of "adopting a rider". That is to follow a motorbike rider in a car protecting them from other road hazards like other vehicles etc.

    I've experienced rider adoption but from the front not the rear, the driver truly acting like a guardian angel. I was riding a narrow single track road through a Scottish glen on my brute of a Kawasaki ZZR1400/ZX14 when I passed a Mercedes parked in a passing place. The narrow road winds uphill then down with two nasty steep hairpin switchbacks one uphill one downhill. I stopped on the crest to take photos of the stunning scenery when the Mercedes passed me, I followed and ended up quite close behind it. Ahead I could see it stopped completely blocking the road and at first thought " what on earth are they doing?" As I got closer I saw the Mercedes driver chatting to the driver of a car in a passing place, which I had been unable to see before that. Obviously a warning was given that I was behind him and the driver waited at the side of the road untill I passed.
    As we both followed the road as it snaked downhill through trees another car approached in the opposite direction. The Mercedes driver slowed but kept driving forwards forcing the oncoming car to reverse into a passing place, clearing the road for me. Further downhill at the steep switchback again they stopped blocking the road, unseen by me was an Audi coming the opposite way. The Mercedes driver reversed slightly back forcing me to hold back, then pulled forwards into a gateway once I was tucked into the widest part of the turn and the Audi driver could see me. Had it not been for the Mercedes driver's actions I would have been forced to stop on steep inlines with a very heavy bike and nowhere to get past or out of harms way 🙏😇

    @cloudmaker Месяц назад +2

    Well first off I have to say what an excellent thought that was to help protect a rider on the road in poor weather conditions. My next thought was that it would be only most useful with an inexperienced or learner rider. Now hold that thought for a moment. I do think that most of us that ride look out for other bikes on the road when driving, I know I do, whether in a car or the truck, I even have videos showing just that! Remember that thought, well I got to thinking that as an experienced motorcyclist that I do not need a guardian angel looking out for me, then I remembered an incident from two years back. In bad weather I was riding from the east coast back home, about 3.5 hours ride. Anyway I had passed a truck and leaving a safe distance was starting to move back over to the next lane, I think there was 3 lanes each way there, the truck I'd just passed was blowing his air horns, I had no idea why but looking to see what he was doing I caught a glimpse of a car undertaking the truck and me doing 80-90mph. He raced by and I gave a thankful wave to the truck driver because if I'd moved over to the next lane I could have been wiped out. So I guess he was my guardian angel that day. Hopefully this might just make some drivers think of riders in these circumstances and just look out for them. Ride safe and Happy as always mate.🏍👍😁😁

    • @MRTPR
      @MRTPR  Месяц назад

      I have heard a couple of similar stories, if I look back on my riding I could probably come up with similar stories. I think we all may have had guardian angles and may not have been aware. 😎

    • @TheRiderGuider
      @TheRiderGuider Месяц назад

      Great example mate, that truck driver was on the ball, now I might get shot down in flames by my next comment, but the standard of truck driver's here (Oz), compared to the UK is very poor, there has been however an influx of driver's that come from different countries, and yes that may also be the case back in the old country now too. I remember twenty or thirty year's ago and the skills of truck driver's were revered, they could be trusted. Here, I see appalling behaviour, phones, drugs and alcohol (common problem), outside lane hogging, regular crashing, ignoring arrester beds when their brakes are gone (yes really). Trucks with serious defects. No pride. Some of what I've experienced is down to the fact that Australia allows driver's to drive here after only passing a test in their own country, where standards are a lot poorer, up skilling is required.

    We have lane filtering here in my home state. When I see a motorcyclist coming through, I try to move over to give them more space. It is my way of saying I can see you. I generally get a quick wave from them as they come past.

    Good stuff Tim, I reckon I've done it (inadvertently adopted rider's) before we gave it this title. Some though probably aren't adoptable unfortunately and it's like watching an accident waiting to happen, and nothing short of having a proper word is going to save them from themselves. The standards are scary. I'm sure you've watched rider's and can tell within a few seconds how experienced they are or aren't. Keep warm and safe mate 🙂

      Hey Jeff I agree with your thought that restricted speed puts new riders in a dangerous situation. Over here (UK) riders on mopeds are restricted to 30mph about 50kmh, obviously a rule made by a committee of non riders, otherwise they'd know how dangerous that is on the open road. Ride safe and happy.
