I was once told by a man who operated a plant nursery that it is mostly a myth that trees suffer limb freezing due to cold winds and that is in, in fact, that there is not enough moisture in the ground to keep limbs viable during winter. He stated that moisture is just as important in the winter months as in the summer.
Hello Mike! I am looking forward to seeing my plantings in the spring. It was great to see the green leaves on your plants. Have a great holiday season!
Good morning, Mike! Great information in this video about keeping plants moist in the winter. As usual, your videos provide us with much needed and appreciated information to get and keep plants to the stage where we have some plants we are proud of and others enjoy seeing. Thanks again! And Johnny just wants your attention. He is most likely jealous that you are giving us all your attention. I think it is time for me to go out now and water my plants. Thanks to you - your site, "I Love Plant Propagation," and the videos - people love my creations -and friends and all who see my plants think that I have so much knowledge. You can only imagine how many people have inquired about how i air-layer trees. If I had more room; I probably would have have of the trees in Augusta propagated. LOL!!! I just got the stitches out on Thursday from my "last" fall (broken wrist). Boy did I miss working in the yard with my plants. I am back. Thanks again Mike for keeping us all on track in propagating beautiful plants ad trees.
thanks for all the tips you have given me this year and, may i say happy christmas to you and your family, time to put your feet up mike have a good one thanks england
Hahaha Johnny! He was really talkative this time! It's really early in the morning over in my part of the world and my husband has a flight to catch. I guess since is 2 am might as well wait for him to leave and then go to sleep. Lol Mike, I kept this video! Johnny wanted to converse with you this time. 😂😂😂 Good job with the video! Thank you for the info, awesome as usual! Good night you all! Hugs
Mike, I thought you did! You could probably see me laughing. Do you let the chickens outside the chicken coop? My grandmother had chickens but I was little and don't remember (did not pay attention). Later on they sold the house and moved to an apartment, that was the biggest mistake for them. My grandpa was like a prisoner in the apartment, at the house he was outside all day long doing stuff.
yo mike: just wanna wish a Happy New Year to you and the family. thanks for a year of interesting information, with your successes and failures and downright fun. a special hello to johnny. good fortune to you all. regards, carmine p.
Thanks Carmine, got the latest envelope full of seeds. Thanks! Happy New Year to you too! Johnny got a new temporary home since we're rebuilding the pole barn. Not related to gardening but if you guys want to see that, I suppose I could post a little about it.
yes, mike. i think all of us would enjoy seeing what johnny is doing since he is a part of your videos. go ahead and let johnny bring in the new year. later, carmine.
I think roots can survive freezing temp . That is to say 32 degree F in a block of ice or with ice Crystal's in the soil. At least that is my observation
Hey Mike I’d love to see video on watering cuttings. I have rooted so may cuttings of late and can’t wait to get to spring so I can up pot them and watch them grow. Trouble is will I have any rooted cuttings left by then ? Because I seem to regularly kill my rooted cuttings mostly by over watering (not intentionally of course) and roots tend to rot. Thing is it doesn’t take lot of water to rot them. But it’s all part of learning process. It’s my first season of propagating plants and I will definitely learn from mistakes
Another thing I noticed that you did, was give them a good rinse. A lot of problems I have dealt with were because the plants became too dusty and the leaves get too dirty. That is a big invitation to spider mites and their freinds... I love your videos, would like to see Johnny sometime. He is dying to be a star.
Hi Mike, I am surprised you Water so much from the top? (Love 💕 your rooster - he’s a natural tough guy, body guard) I actually thought you would have the plants on trays so that the roots can freely drink through the winter months. Thanks for the demo though it’s good to see how you personally do it. 🌲🌷🌼🌹🌲🌸
hi mike: i think you may wanna make johnny dormant. i'm keepin an eye out on the arborvitae plants. i've always like them and the scent they have is so woodsy. just grit your teeth and enjoy his vocal cords. amazing buds on those rodies. if your not on before christmas, you and sheila and the girls have a great holiday and kick out some more vids. regards, carmine petracca.
To tell you the truth, I've never heard of it. I'm not real techy and have been using the same camera and equipment for about 3 years. I'm very open to suggestions though and critiques to help make better videos for you. I probably need to get someone out here that knows what they're doing and help me out with the tech part.
Michael Michael ,is that a dandelion in bottom rt hand cornsr of your cutfings tray? Try a Prosperity rose hedge near the house or an area U pass often -beauty &scent both
Great video! What about deciduous trees like figs for example? I have heard you should not water them in the winter( I am in AZ with not much water from the sky) thanks!
I've never heard that but maybe it's true. I can tell you that I water mine every month or 2 through the winter and they do very well. That might be different in a different part of the country. I'm from Phoenix originally and always wonder how well some of the varieties I have would grow there.
@@MikeKincaid79 BTW, What are your thoughts about overwintering potted perennials on racks vs set on the ground in an unheated greenhouse? Is there much difference? I'm in a similar climate than you here in Portland, OR. I am wondering if the shade created under the racks creates cold zones or not.
Never tried putting any of my plants on racks in the hoop house. I would assume the temps wouldn't change much just because of the fact that the plastic covering creates a uniform temp throughout the house.
I plan to do a video on how I built it sometime in the next year. I don't heat my hoop house, in fact, there aren't any doors on it so it get's freezing cold inside through the winter.
@@MikeKincaid79 Okay great! Thanks for answering my questions. I'm wanting to build one but have it completely sealed and temperature controlled, so I can grow all year long. Here in Oklahoma our winters are pretty harsh.
If you decide to build a hoop house like mine and want it heated then I highly recommend getting the double layer plastic and blowing air between the layers for insulation. I have a friend that does this and it creates a really nice environment for her cuttings through the winter.
Hi Mike. Many of the leaves on your plants have white residue on them. Is that material left behind from your watering (maybe salts in the water?) or do you foliar feed your plants or maybe it's something else? Have a great new year! --Mike O' in DC
We have really hard water here with a lot of calcium. Everything at my place has white calcium deposits from the kitchen sink to the rhododendrons. One of these days I need to install a water softener. I use to have a filter for my mist system or the misting nozzles would get clogged.
Walmart. Every year they have a new supply of these cheap wands. They only last a season or 2 but they're cheap and work really well. I usually pick up 2 or 3 every year and plug them into all the hoses on my property.
I would love to see how tall your arborvitae you planted in the ground are now. Just wondering if I would like to plant them as a living fence. Johnny likes you, he is telling you how much he values male to male conversation... He's tired of getting hen pecked!
Never considered that. Poor Johnny is out there with all those women all by himself, haha. I did a video update of the green giants a couple months ago, no growth since that time.
I have just been released from the detoxification clinic . A 6 month stay for internet addiction so I have been out of the loop. What's the latest on Led lighting presented by the Mike kincaid channel . Big report in the Washington post about remarkable advances in LED use in plant growing in the last three years
Haha, Glad to see the detox clinic didn't get the best of you! LED lights are awesome and I've been experimenting with some and getting great results. Way less power consumption and heat. Much better growth. I probably should make a video about it.
As cold as it gets outside the green house. It got down to 12 degrees F. last winter and all the plants inside were frozen hard as a rock. The covering just protects the plants from fast temperature fluctuations.
I am struggling to keep a vibrant rosemary plant going. Its in a bright light filled window and I try not to overwater, wait til the top is dry, but slowly the branches are still dying off. Any ideas?
Jody Jones What size container of what kind of growing medium is it in? My indoor plants are in plastic pots and I judge when I need to water by how light or heavy they feel. I understand rosemary prefers to be a little drier, might still be overwatering. Could even just be pests of some kind
@@calebcologna8681 Its growing in a about a 3quart plastic pot, I dug it out of the garden soil where it was very happy all summer long. I didnt add anything. When I transplanted it, I left the pot setting outside for another few weeks to let it get accustomed to the pot. I never water until the soil is dry at least 1 inch down, but I will try cutting back on it. I may just strip the leaves and freeze them if it doesnt improve. I just love using the fresh rosemary in cooking :) Thank you
Growing plants indoors can be tough. I recommend really letting the pot dry out before you water again. Just keep an eye on the plant and make sure it's not wilting. Rosemary shouldn't need much water indoors.
Yep, once it freezes I back off. The only time I water through the winter is when the potting soil starts looking a little dry. I may go several months through the winter without watering.
Haha, Johnny got pretty difficult to work with this time. There's actually much more of him in the video but I had to cut it out or we never would have gotten to the end.
Don’t let your Rooster distract you....it doesn’t or shouldn’t bother the viewer....adds to the charm of your environment.😊

Maybe you need a medium that drains water better. Sand might be a good bet for you.

It really depends on the plants but the rhododendrons do well with the way I do it. I only water a couple times over the whole winter though.
