I've shipped several seedlings and plants to my son who lives in a small port town in Alaska. There are a lot of herbs and vegetables that he can't get locally so I've been sending him plants that he can grow. Using your method here everything made it to him safe and sound. Thank you for sharing your idea
Hi.. do you think it will last for 18 days? I was planning to get calathea from Singapore to Philippines.. do you think it’ll survive? Thanks Hoping to get a response from you 🙏
@@valerieaikopalileo1769 I noticed you just now! I had a plant last for almost 3 weeks in the package like this and it came out just fine. It was a fig tree that was shipped to me and got lost in the mail.
I'm going to be mailing my first plant this week and this video was so much more helpful than my basic google search. Thank You for your quality info and you just got a new subscriber too UPDATE: Both plants that I mailed arrived safely and in PERFECT condition!!! One traveled to California while the other traveled to the tip of Florida and I'm in Utah so that's great to know that this method works well for close and longer distances!
Thank you so much for demonstrating how to wrap a package with a live plant. I am shipping an Angel wing begonia tomorrow. Now, I don't have to worry about the leaves being damaged during shipping.🤗😄🌞
You never know what the postal service will do with your box but this method ensures extra protection and that the top of the plant doesn't get smashed. Good luck!
I also sell plants online and I can make one improvement in that which will reduce shipping cost. You have put plant in between of cardboard length.. put it towards bottom and not exactly touching the bottom. Then there will be a small gap at the bottom of box and pot base. Just fill it with either bubble wrap or balls and then tape it.. thus the total height of the item with packaging will get reduced which will make volumetric weight way less than present.
You may want to try 1 gallon twist tie close plastic bags from Wally World. The Twist Tie Bags (1 gal, w/ twist ties, $0.032/each) cost less than 1 qt Zip bags ( $0.038/each). They should be large enough for you to pull it up over the quart pot and use the twist tie to secure the mouth of the bag around the stem of the plant. This would eliminate all the messy, sticky taping or the need for the paper towel, unless you want to keep it for moisture and to keep the soil from moving around. Admittedly, it may require some repositioning of the tape to hold the cardboard on, but the time and cost savings for someone doing this for profit should be worth it. Great video and thank you for all the hard work you put into this channel! God bless.
I'm not a business type; just wanted to send my out of state friend a mango tree sapling from my yard this summer, but this looks so good and safe! Great ideas, thanks so much for it, I'm sure it'll work out wonderfully. It occurs to me that if you're less worried about appearance you could also use unfolded cereal boxes or regular thick cardboard (when sliced/scored vertically every half inch inch or so on the outside, to allow for easy curving) instead of the thick cardboard paper to get the same stabilized effect too.
Wow this is amazing, I’m starting an Etsy shop and I’ve been completely baffled by trying to work out how to mail them. This is amazing and takes all the fear out of it for me, thank you. My challenge is how to achieve all this with using eco friendly tape , which could be interesting!
I always write "Fragile" or "Glass" on the box 📦 just so the Post is a little bit more careful with my packages. I've had a really bad experience with the postal services with the boxes getting half demolished. Great Video 👍🏻
This genius!!! Thank sharing your method for shipping a plant. My family thought I was crazy when I said I was send love plants through the mail. It’s easy enough that o can come exactly what you did! 👍
It's so easy and really holds the plants really snug in the package. Good luck and have fun. By the way, when they start thinking you're crazy, you're on the right path.
I love the method of taping it inside a cylinder to protect the plant. Regarding insulation and cold, two things I was wondering... Are you shipping via ground transportation or air? I'm thinking that the hold of a freight aircraft could get pretty cold at any time of year, so maybe a little insulation isn't a bad idea no matter the season. The other thing I was thinking is that some crumpled paper around the outside of the cylinder would probably do just as well as your bubble wrap did. Most insulation materials get their insulating properties from the air trapped inside them. You already have a pretty good skin around the outside with the box, tape and paper to prevent air movement from outside to inside. Any material that maintains air spaces and reduces the air's ability to move around should do a reasonable job for insulation. Crumple a piece to stuff in top and bottom and then a bunch around the gaps between the cylinder and the box to keep it kinda centred in the box and you're done and save a bit of tape. You can probably find a bunch of options for cheap or free sources of packing paper - depending on your volumes. Advertising flyers, old newspapers, junk mail, etc.
Thanks, Charles! I made this one a few years ago when I realized this was a genuine problem, lol. I kept having this idea pop in my head and had to try it. Worked out beautifully and I've been shipping plants like this ever since.
Thanks sooo much! This was awesome! I mailed my sister rooted cuttings of rosemary, a variegated mariesii hydrangea, and canna lilies using your method! Everything arrived beautifully. Thanks!
Omg... thank you for sharing! I keep seeing plastic wrap bags without soil... im trying to figure out a way to send arrangements. your way is the best and easiest for me

Thank you Mike, I live in CT and I am moving to SC in a couple of months and I have three house plants that I want to mail there the day before I fly there. You made my day so I know how to package my plants so they will be safe and not fall apart. Great video and presentation. I learned so much. Thank you again.😄 Made my day!!
Doing research for my etsy house plants shop set up. This video was number one in the youtube search! So very, very helpful. Thank you, Mike. Another well done video. Really enjoyed seeing the buyer's reactions 😁
Another good idea for frost protection, use one of those cheap mylar space blankets with the bubble wrap. Though, that metallic bubble wrap is basically the same thing. No such thing as excessive. I HATE buying plants and stuff and them coming damaged due to bad packaging. Also, the post office gives out long triangular boxes that can be used. I've cut them down and used them as dividers for multiplant shipping. (In place of the cardboard roll basically)
Wow. You did a really good packaging job. The plant must have never known it was shipped that far. The tapes were place strategically and not just anywhere or everywhere that it might give the buyer a headache in getting the plant out of the box. However, it would have been a great help to label the top and bottom part of the plant. As a buyer, i take extra care in opening the box so i appreciate such label.
At first I was thinking that your cardboard layer was a bit of overkill, but then when I saw him psycho shower attack scene into that box, I realized that it also acts as a nice boxcutter shield. It's probably important to make sure that the receiver is able to unwrap the plant without damaging it in the process reasonably easily.
GREAT Job Mike 👍.. Thanks for the really nice comment! I sure hope it goes viral. I agree, we should all be able to receive the plants we paid for in the condition the picture shows and hopefully this will give some sellers some great ideas!
Mike you could patent the way you package the plant, along with the video points of how you want to receive a plant and sell it to companies like Michigan Bulbs, Brecks etc; Many times I've been tricked into ordering a special plant, only to receive some mostly dead thing in a bag that ends up dying and then I'm out my $$. Great video!
I never considered patenting it but if it pays the mortgage it doesn't sound like a bad idea. Wonder if that's even possible. Anyway, yeah, I like this method for sure. I got tired of the same issue you have with companies and wanted to design a way to ensure a reliable delivery. Sure is simple and works great.
Thank you for sharing this! My dad just transitioned yesterday and he’s in another state. I want to bring his plants back home with me but I know I can’t fly with them so this video was absolutely helpful! 💛
Heck yeah!! Thank you for sharing this video - I absolutely love how much thought you put into your packaging and care for your customers' experiences. I'm moving across the country soon, and while I'll likely be gifting some of the houseplants I've enjoyed here for years, but the few plants I'd really like to keep are much more likely to arrive intact now that I've watched your video. Yay!! Thank you so, so much!
Nice to see people like you care enough to go the extra mile. That is awesome! I pack care packages the same way when using the flat rate boxes at USPS. You are right, the USPS does play football with packages. So does UPS and Fed Ex because my Amazon packages are beyond recognizable sometimes.

I bet, for extra insulation, you could fill the holes on the ends of the paper tube with a thick wadded paper or packing material so it stays warmer. I would add a little extra eight, but a little extra warmth too. And as someone from Michigan, it's practically needed, haha.
@@MikeKincaid79 I think your idea still works. I'll try draining all but just the bottom rim of water. I can slit an opening in some clear plastic bag like material and put it over the plant. Then do your method with the cardboard paper. I wish I could find that cardboard paper in bulk out here or there was a place to buy it. Since my plants are small I will try a cereal box but I'd like to print something pretty on it so it still looks nice. I'll try to make a video and share it here once I try it.

This particular plant was won in a bid and went for $350. That's an outlier though and you won't see that much. In fact, if I listed this same plant today, it would probably go for $50.

Thanks, Errol!
Great job Mike!
Great job, I've got some tomato plants to send, and I've been planning and trying allsorts of ways!Your way is the one I choose.
You can't go wrong with it!
Awesome bro
Hey Mike what about pricing? What did you sell the plant for and how much did it cost to ship?
Love your videos 👍🏼
This particular plant was won in a bid and went for $350. That's an outlier though and you won't see that much. In fact, if I listed this same plant today, it would probably go for $50.
This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you so much ☺️
Glad it was helpful!
This was great! Thank you!😊
Glad it was helpful!
Good Package Tips, would it be a good idea just put a few air holes just for the plant to get a little air ?
As long as the plant isn't sitting in the box for weeks, you shouldn't have to do that.
Thank you for showing the unboxing, I needed that!
My pleasure! Gad you enjoyed it.
Thank you for the awesome tips. What is the paper called? Thanks!
It's just thick construction paper
