Kudos for the brilliant approach of #4 USE YOUR SCREEN TO STOKE YOUR NEGATIVE EMOTIONS (about things over which you have no control or influence). I am so proud of you and I don't even know you. 💜 Also kudos on cleaning your whole house. Much better than sitting idle in a dirty house and not even knowing if you are even capable of cleaning your house! (Ok, maybe that last part was just me)
Yeah. Especially when you have to move your furnitures around and when you search how to clean this certain stain, and you need to go to Walmart again. Never again.
Yeah, I think that's why he made it. All the "just go outside and pursue thing you like!" advice just sounds too cheesy and obvious. Phrasing it like the video is a super good reverse psychology thing and helps because you identify with the steps and that gets you to realize what you're doing is contributing to how you feel.
This is a smart, people are like “eww I don’t want advice on how to feel better I already know what I need to feel better” seeing it flipped is tongue and cheek and makes you pay attention anyways. Two thumbs up
I wonder if people pay attention because they are lookin for things to make fun of the people they know in this video's, only to find problems with themselves.
The best part about this video is that it tells you what you NEED to hear but don't want to in a way that is fun and respectful enough to maintain the listener's interest.
My smile as the video started, slowly turned into nervous chuckles, to an insecure fake smile, then into a full on "existential crisis" look of dread upon my face.
Yeah for me it was all uncomfortable "heheheh I guess that's me LOL" until the sleep part hit and then I thought "Shit that is me" and then the goals part hit and I was full on existential "Fuuuuuuu…"
Oof, hit me right in the feels. For some, doing all of this is automatic and natural. I struggle with anxiety and ADHD and it is a constant effort to improve myself for future me.
I used to be one of those peeps. Its possible to be healthy, i used this video, along with themes, and lockdown productivity to get better. Later on i tuned in to cortex
CGP motivated me with a video about how to be miserable, gave me existential dread in a video about metric paper, and gave me euphoria in a video about hexagons. This man is incomprehensibly engimatic with incomprehensible goals
0:20 #1 live a sedentary lifestyle and don't go outside much. 0:57 #2 Have an irregular sleep cycle for example never be consistent with your waking and sleeping time. 1:50 3# Maximus your screen time. 2:30 4# Feel anxiety and fear over things you have no control or influence over, being well informed while doing nothing and if you decide to contribute make sure it's meaningless. The things you care about could be a reason to leave your house and take meaningful connections with the people around you. 3:26 #5 To reach goals they must be Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Responsible, Time-Bounded.Instead set your brain on V.A.P.I.D. goals which stands for Vague, Amorphous, irrelevant, pie in the sky, delayed.Make the goal and path unclear.if you have motivation set unrealistic goals.Try to achieve the goal whenever you want don't set deadlines. With vapid goals you will turn the productive part of your brain from a dangerous source of self-improvement that rewards every small step into a consistent nag that brates you for your failure to have already accomplished your goal every step of the way. 4:45 #6 Pursue happiness directly instead of letting it happen to you naturally. 5:23 #7 Always follow your instincts.
Made this for myself, and thought to share: 1. Go outside, get moving, don't lock yourself up. 2. Fix your sleep schedule, get proper sleep. 3. Reduce your screen time. 4. Don't fret over irrelevant topics and things that you can't control. If you want to do something, do it. 5. Set a clear and achievable goal. Make small consistent goals. 6. Don't search for your idea of happiness, just do what makes you happy. 7. Think things through, weigh and understand the consequences/results of your action.
Matthew Taylor both paying and not paying rent have advantages. Depending how much you pay you can be left with very little money so you are unable to do anything, plus work can leave you exhausted so you won't do anything anyway. Not paying rent leaves you without a weekly goal "make this much money", it doesn't force you to get a job which is a distraction and most of the time provides human interaction, you are also not paying for your own basic needs which can make you feel worthless.
A sure-fire way to be sad is to constantly compare yourself to others. This can really lower your self-esteem. Even better: don’t do anything about it. Stay in that constant loop!
Compare yourself with who you were yesterday, not someone else today. Also If I mention the person who originally said this quote then there'd be a war in the reply section.
Celebrities or internet influencers are the best to compare yourself to achieve misery, always think "wow that person is so much better" or "if only I had been more lucky" and keep that going, keep blaming fate or work than actually working to improve.
@@hikerieger6319 Even if you had the luck those influencers have, you wouldn’t last because they’re just that much better than you. The “everyone has to start somewhere” quote doesn’t apply here. If you’re just objectively less skilled than them, you will only live in their shadow.
@@Pluto-ek3mh Influencers aren't really... skilled. Several of them from where I come have publicly come out about heavy depression, body dysmorphia, eating disorders and whatnot. Even if they're objectively skilled, they're not really "better" than any of us. They're us but with more money and a lot more public exposure. None of that matters in the grand scheme if you don't want it to. I like the way "you will only live in their shadow" is a bit like how this video itself works. This is why we shouldn't compare, as you mentioned originally, because it brings out these arguments which don't really open up anything new but rather just keep the same old circle going.
This video is actually so well made, slowly understanding myself and how to prevent how to not be depressed, it's insane how accurate this is. It's almost sarcastic, it's beautiful.
The reason I like videos like this more than “motivation” videos that tell you what to do is because nobody likes to be told what to do and so you’ll just watch the video and forget about it minutes later. For example, this video gives you steps on how to be unhappy and to those of us who want a happier life all we have to do is simply not do those things. It’s much easier to not do something than it is to do something. It doesn’t matter what we do, as long as we don’t do the things mentioned in this video, you’ll automatically be doing something without it feeling like a chore.
Yup, I agree. The reason this video is so effective, is that it points out exactly the things we're guilty of and holds us accountable for it which it's a harsh task to do for every person. But, the video also shows the consequences of it if you don't do so making it so more effective
I guess most of things he tells to do in this video's are not doing something or more precisely anything. So if you want to not do what he says you have to do something.
"Use your screen to stoke your negative emotions, to feed your anger and anxiety over things you have no control over. Be well informed, while doing nothing." That wasn't just a punch in the gut. That was a stab in the kidneys, with a blunt and serrated knife, and you twisted it gleefully with every word.
Thanks a lot for making this video. Before I was a really happy person, but after watching this and following all of your steps, I feel much worse! Great video!
Step 8: acknowledge that you follow these trends and instead of fixing the problem, make memes and jokes to garner likes and feel temporary happiness. Even if you acknowledge the mental amd physical side effects
@@peterpathos4313 Do it again. Sometimes people lose their discipline and expect to be at the level they were before. It doesn't work that way. Baby steps. Watch the video again.
You forced me to acknowledge tangible ways I actively prolong misery. Now I feel guilty and am ignoring your instructions. You have failed in aiding my journey to endless misery.
On top of that you have now created a comment section of people who feel the same that I can relate with so I know I don’t feel alone in my miserable ways. This is madness!
Shhhh... Don't ask questions, just continue watching. Side note: He technically does make money off your stillness/misery, so shhhh... And agreed to the under rated comment
@Turururu my dude, your addicted to the dopamine boost. Slowly lower the frequency, to like once a week. Maintaining a constant sleep schedule is needed.
Y'know, this may sound crazy, but I have the sneaking suspicion that if you did the *opposite* of these things, you'd have a list on how to *not* be miserable. That could really backfire.
Wow this is literally me. This has been me for the past 5 years, hadn't watched the video before but yeah, definitely recommended method to feel more miserable and just get to the realization that this is how your life will keep being and you can't do anything about it bc you are an absolute failure that doesn't have an ounce of willpower, and even when others try to help you you reject them 👍
I think the point of this video was to tell you to start doing the opposite of what you've been doing to help imporve your happiness. Instead of waiting for modivation you have to start just imporving small things about your boat and listen to your instincts
No focus on one of the ways and try to change you from that. Make a note book to set smal but monumental tasks to improve your self. Please read this and don't just brush it away.
No Judgement Day, you fool! It was a just an expression. Now you'll be exposed to wretched sea air and sunlight that will lift your spirits, bringing you ever closer to happiness!
Watching this from my now more learned perspective, it now makes sense why i have had such a struggle to be anything close to happy for a majority of my life. ADHD is one hell of a handicap for many things.
@@SilverThyme I disagree, I’m an introvert and definitely need my alone time or I’ll end up burned out. But never having any social interaction at all is a track to feeling lonely and sad. The key is just to balance some social time with your needs for yourself as well.

Thanks CGP Grey!
During Quarantine in 2020, almost all of these steps were true for me and I was absolutely miserable. I was failing some classes in school and it was a depressing time for me. These steps work and most of the time you don't even know they were in effect. My life is better now but after watching this video it's just made me realize just how much the pandemic affected my life.
@@shinigami7800 research has shown that genetically some people will just be happier than other people on regular basis, due to their hormones and biological conditions. (They even suggested that 60% of your mood is determined biologically, so the video prob only accounts for the other 40%) That being said, it is likely that you will be happier had you done the opposite of what this video recommends.
Have you considered it might be ADHD? I mean, yeah, it could be you're "just" lazy or something, but I've worked my butt off and just can't get things done. Lose things, miss things, and have fought tooth and nail to develop habits to counter these tendencies- calendar, to-do lists, accountability buddies, pomodoro, pretty much throwing everything at that wall. I still can't do even half of what others can. I just _can't._ Maybe you're struggling with executive dysfunction too.
I love videos like this because it encourages you to become self aware of all of the terrible things that you're doing wrong in your life in a way that telling you how to fix your life just doesn't do
I've been doing every single one of these except for #6 for several months. Glad I rewatched this video, really gave me a reality check. I'll do something about it. Eventually.
I do most of these and surprisingly I'm not really miserable and even happier than ever before, I just simply REALLY enjoy being alone in my room, it feels like a little freedom of sorts, free from whatever is happening outside, and can do anything I want, before I had to go outside more often and I was always very anxious and nervous just by being around other people, vaguely hearing them about different things that I just never fully understand and just had to stay still and quiet until I could finally return home exhausted by the day
It's kinda sad that this video resonates with so many people, but also comforting. At least we all now know how easy it is to slip into this cycle, for a large percentage of people.
Knowing that everyone is just as messed up is very comforting. Makes you feel normal. I recommend checking out The School of Life channel, all of their videos have a similar vibe.
This is one of my most favorite finds in the internet, I NEEDED this in my life Thank you for giving me a more DIRECT explanation for something I desperately needed
I think this is far more effective than any motivational video about success. No one wants to change up their lifestyle if what they have going for them is working. No, you may not be happy with how you are living, but you aren't dead and it could be worse. A lot of the time motivational videos talk about what actions you *can* take in order to improve your life, but not what actions you should quit doing.
I’m hoping that eventually, my misery will overflow over 255 and loop back to happiness. Edit: Got a floating point error that made me crash. I had to do a full reset.
My stepdad has a small gym room in his house. I lived there for 7 years have never used it. After this video I called him up if he was home, I wanted to use the gym room. It's been 2 weeks now and i'm just rewatching the video and can already see the shiny islands of happiness in the distance. Starting a new job on monday, too and going to a small party in about an hour. Good luck you glorious bastards.
So far so good. Job is starting to suck a little bit more each day but I guess that's most jobs for ya, I guess. I'm an IT guy and I have to say it feels good to be away from the computer and filling my days with something a little more useful. I have a regular sleeping pattern now though I do still stay up a little too late each and every day, and every single day I arrive at work thinking "why the fuck didn't I go to sleep earlier, i promised myself I would" I do feel more fit and once I get through the sleepyness and am actually ready to do things it feels good to be busy. It's friday now and I actually feel like the weekend is my reward, instead of 'just another day'. I abandoned sporting though. Can't muster up the energy to do a workout after work (i've never been a sporty guy, ever, which is the excuse I tell myself too, cuz it's true) but so far so good. You can do it. You just need someone to give you that little push to get busy. Meeting new people is definately one of the biggest improvements you can make. You need to get out of your comfortable little bubble if you ever wanna not be depressed af. It seems comfortable until you look back and think how depressing it is. God speed.
How to be miserable: Procrastinate on everything Food - Can wait. Fun things - Are expensive better save that money and time. Urgent stuff - Too stressfull let's do that later. Family and friends - You need to do important stuff first Important stuff- What defines important, is it really imporant enough let's think about that for a long time. Outdoors- Nah it's to (cold, windy, wet, bright, humid, etc.) Sleep - As long as I don't sleep it doesn't become the next day now I have more time. Romanticize pain and be upset about what could have been voila you're miserable.
1. Go outside, get moving, don't lock yourself up 2. Fix your sleep schedule, get proper sleep 3. Reduce your screen time 4. Don't fret over irrelevant topics and things that you can't control 5. Set a clear and achievable goal 6. Don't search for your idea of happiness, just do what makes you happy 7. Think things through, weigh the consequences/results of your action
This video is just brilliant. He absconded good morals with playful satire, and once you are lured into the video expecting a laugh or two; you realize the flaw of such actions, and how easy it can be to break the cycle of misery. This video was more motivational for me than any video that puts forth a clear label of life-changing tips. I started the video laughing, and finished realizing how essential and simple it can be to take short strides towards fulfillment. Thank you so much for this, CGP Grey.
it's good motivation for some people, but for people with serious disorders this video just makes them feel like shit. people with depression know that certain things can help but they still don't do them, that's why they have depression.
I worked in an old folks home till just now when they won’t employ me cos i had an adverse reaction to the vax and so i won’t get another. Anyway, a few years ago we went to a children village complex in Uganda to work and there they had a teaching institute for people who want to start similar works. Anyway, one day the topic was ‘the difference between an orphanage and a children’s home/ or a home’. They went through all these things like ‘ you don’t have your own belongings or they’re not looked after’ and ‘there is no physical contact’ or ‘who you are and what you do doesn’t mean anything’. As they went on and on i realised with dread that old people’s home’s are orphanages for the 80s and 90 year olds. So i totally agree with your comment.
To anyone struggling with doing all these things, as he said with cleaning your house, start with improving one at a time. Trying to fix your entire life at once sets you up for failure there as well. I've entered a very deep depression over the last two years and I'm still doing many of these things. i KNOW they're bad for me, and I screamed at myself every day to just get up and do something. I've only recently managed to start fixing my sleep schedule and just correcting that single aspect has already made a massive change. i'm currently focussing on taking a walk and shower in the morning when I get up (consistently now at least) rather than feeling sorry for myself in bed for 4 hours. I still hate the walking and have no desire to do it yet and I'm struggling to keep to my plan. That said, progress is progress. Hang in there.
Get tested for narcolepsy. The average diagnosis.time from inception to realization is a staggering 12-15 YEARS! Doctors never want to believe it's narcolepsy until they get the MRI scan AND the spinal tap but low levels of the hormone hypocretin only signal afew things, all needing medical attention, not psychological.
I got started with self improvement a few days ago and i was already afraid that i might get happier. But luckily now i have the perfect guide to stay sad forever. Thank you so much

But paying rent helps to maximize misery???
StoneMountain64 I can do you one better. I live in a shed in my grandma's backyard.

Enemy depression spotted
@@Pluto-ek3mhthanks ill use this technique next time! 😁

What!?
So it seems we're rebels
you say "those of us who want a happier life" like people are following this to be sad
"Use your screen to stoke your negative emotions, to feed your anger and anxiety over things you have no control over. Be well informed, while doing nothing."

I have a regular sleeping pattern now though I do still stay up a little too late each and every day, and every single day I arrive at work thinking "why the fuck didn't I go to sleep earlier, i promised myself I would"
I do feel more fit and once I get through the sleepyness and am actually ready to do things it feels good to be busy.

How to be miserable: Procrastinate on everything
Food - Can wait.
Fun things - Are expensive better save that money and time.
Urgent stuff - Too stressfull let's do that later.

This made me realize this is what happens to people in old folks homes unless they make a very real effort to go on walks and socialize
@@aidanpoulter9514 your comment was just as eye-opening. Old folks homes being orphanages for the elderly... that's such a perfect way to put it.
I hope you don't mind that I'm aspiring to be like you. Ok, time to clean the closet first.
Keep fighting the good fight!
1 step forward, 3 steps back.
Go out doors, burn from the sun. Go back inside to your comfort laundry pile to heal.
Works every time.
Keep on with it man , progress is exponential with habits. U will feel shitty and u will fail but with time it will improve

"Man, can't believe the girl of my dreams broke my heart so brutally, maybe some RUclips will cheer me up..."
Man, the only person I've ever felt anything towards in my life has returned after being gone for 2 years in which i tried dating. Oh she thought I didn't mean it when i said "I love you" because nobody could love her and now someone else got her...Remember saving up 3000 euro's so you could get her out of there, or fuck it just visit because it'd be worth it that you splurged on your pc after thinking you lost her because it broke and without it you got more suicidal...yeah great choice
At least I know she loved and still does love me haha...That ocean in between us yeah. That's all that stood in the way, talking to her daily making a note of every step closer
Good luck mate, if I may advice something move on, you don't want to end up feeling like I do every moment you're not with her
Why do the best girls always do that? I had a crush for 3 years but wasn't allowed to date her until I left my parents' house because they're religious nuts. She was "In love" with me for 3 months, but left with no warning for reasons that are still unknown.
Maybe some RUclips will cheer y'all up 🤷🏻♂️
Meme Snack said nobody ever
The girl of my dreams (gf of 2 years) just left me and I went straight to this to remind me what not to do
This may sound cliche but this video saved my life. For years I was wallowing my own self pity but you made me realise that my doing the opposite of what you said I'd get better. Thanks Grey:)
Thank you for this, I’ve been suffering from unreasonable happiness and I think this might put me on the right track.
You can do it!
Jesus, this felt like a solid prolonged six minute burn.
You got the wrong message then
no that just means that it hits home
Hits? More like it steamrolled as if thrown by a crazed vampire.
Isn't that what a burn is?
and the crazed vampire is also better looking than me
Coming back here after a while.
This video helped me a lot with my depression and PTSD.
Because of your video I got to get a therapist.
Just wanted to thank you
You’re welcome
I think i will get one, too. Man this is hard.
Woah Becoming self aware is harsh
That moment when you realize that you've been doing exactly this for your entire life
And that you didn't deserve happiness in the first place anyways so you're not gonna do anything to change. Lul
same. I like unicorns and smiley faces. Huh.
yeah
I think that's the point
And then just shrug it off like me and live your normal life
Wow this video really helped me out!I am very miserable now.
I'm sad now. I literally check off almost all of the criteria already.
Thats perfect. You are a great sailor!
So start changing them, one by one.
Same! I was watching this and was growing more confident in my misery, until he started talking about how the brain will try to auto correct. I still have that running, will need to work on that later
great job!
Dude i check off all of the criteria and am poor and a bit ugly but am still happy
I am here to take a break from this all nighter I am pulling for this midterm that I have been studying for. Slaughtering step 1 and 2.
