2022 - year of restoring energy on a relatively comfortable surface while hindering electromagnetic radiation in the 400-800nm range from being absorbed by your photoreceptor cells at the same time as your brain changes from awake stage to the REM-sleep stage and remaining at this stage for preferably 7 to 9 hours and repeating this process every time the earth achieves 6.265 radians in its rotation around its own axis
This video had a massive impact on me, so i would like to share my story as a way of saying thank you to cpc grey and hopefully inspiring other. I struggled with depression/social anxiety/suicidal thoughts for five years and under the influence of this video (and also stoicism) i dedicated the past 6 months to theme 'mental health'. I postponed some parts of my college degree, started a new hobby, took part to some physical challenges (obstacle run), went on a hiking holliday with new people and a whole lot more. It was hard and challenging but i made massive progression and i am now more self confident, happy and courage. Thank you cpc grey!
I feel like this can be very ADHD friendly. It isn't so focused and specific so that one would have a hard time keeping on task, and broad enough to, as you said, be more forgiving as the initial definition can, and will most likely evolve, or even run into hurdles which both could devastate someone with ADHD. Thank you!!!
My new year's revolution was a success. My goal was to quit smoking cigarettes (I used to smoke a half pack a day) and since January 1st I've only smoked 3 cigarettes. I still have cravings but I'm proud of myself. Update: Thanks everyone.
It is true though. For me, this kind of thinking has made me more nuanced politically, see the world in different ways, re-examine what I even need to do to live a functional life (im a young adult) and is helping me recover from a breakup. When you think you're stuck, it helps to examine how you examine your situation, or the world for that matter, or [insert appropriate concept], or ...
Watching Grey's videos and listening to HI has actually got me to think about my thinking more than I think I should. I often find myself trying to over-analyze my brain to figure out why I'm unhappy or annoyed, and it often just makes me more unhappy or annoyed.
From the man that brought us "7 ways to maximize misery" and "This video will hurt". We hereby present "Your new year's resolution has already failed". I've been going through 2 joy seasons since I was in a similar point that you are saying you are. It's totally worth it, helping your mind think more positively and enjoy life is something that should be taught but takes some people feeling like shit for years to realize. Hope it turns out great! And remember, your happiness is in how you experience reality.

I don’t remember when Grey first talked about “Year of’s” because when I decided I wanted to start losing weight way back in September of 2018, I said to myself “This is my year of health.” By the same day in 2019 I was 100 lbs lighter. The idea of a theme actually helped me a lot and my eating’s certainly improved too. Thanks, CGP Grey.
I live by a simple principle: do as you see fit. You cannot predict what the future will bring, so binding yourself to any unnecessary chains seems pointless. If you can trust your own intuition and self-control to guide you in the moment, you do not need or want any pre-made resolutions.
I did this last year (2022) and I did "year of discovery" and throughout the year I tried to take paths that would allow me to learn and gain more knowledge as much as possible. It was so fun and effective! I defenatly recommend it for anyone who's interested
I guess the difference is the time horizon of your goal? If you plan to accomplish it now or the immediate future, it should be specific so that you know that you definitely done it. It's more useful to be vague for achieving long term goals so that you don't give up altogether when you realize that you effed up once or twice
5:38 "Nature's clock ticks on, reminding you that flowers bloom but briefly, the summer sun will wane, leaves eventually drop, snow falls and snow melts, and flowers bloom, but briefly" You're a poet. That line is beautiful and sad at the same time.
I felt like I wanted to go with the theme "year of compassion" because I want to help others more. Then I remembered my anxiety is always in the way, and I freeze when confronted with situations where I could actually help spontaneously. Then I realized compassion for myself counts. This is going to be a good year.
"You're all here to save the world, what I want you to understand is that it's okay to just save one person and it's okay if that person is you." -can't remember who I'm quoting, some dude over the internet I guess. Stay strong friend, stay strong

This video actually did way more for me than I thought. I assigned 2022 as "year of self improvement" and I moved out of my parents house, got a better job, and surrounded myself with better friends than before. I'm still smoking cigarettes though so I guess 2023 will be "year of better health" or something
This video helped me a lot this year. Looking back on where i started, i dropped out of college as an obese 19 year old who had no idea what he’d do with his life. Once i decided on the military i knew i had to lose weight. Instead of doing strict diets or setting a “I will weigh this weight by the end of the year” i decided to try the “Season/year of health” thing and it really worked well for me. I thought about my choices more, all at the same time working on getting my enlistment set up. 5 months and 30 pounds later i’m about to join the military and already in the best shape of my life. I’m not a mega-athlete now, but i can confidently say i’ll be middle-of-the pack once i get to boot camp, when mere months ago i firmly believed i’d never be able to keep up.
I assigned 2020 as the "Year of Worth" because I had felt guilty for not being "productive" with my time. Productive is a vague and overall unhelpful term so I sought specific activities I like doing. (drawing, reading, quality time w/ family, etc.) I do them, and I enjoy it! I feel like I've spent my time well. The pandemic has probably pushed me to fill my day with more of these pastimes. Thank you for this idea!
Interestingly enough, 2020 was my „Year of productivity“ and I talked to a friend about that and he said „You are always too focused on that, why not make it the year of relaxation“. So I created the „Year of relaxed productivity“ and man, that helped a lot.
You can still maybe live with a roomate or engage more with people online, maybe buy a vr headset. Or come up with some thing else idk. Also maybe change the theme to something that's more doable if the current theme isnt working for you
Similar for me. After years of unstable work and shame and social isolation, I decided to have a "year of communication." I started reaching out and connecting locally and then pop.
The one thing I realised over many years, you have to WANT to do something, and do not set a goal. I always said to myself, I want to do more workout and I have to do this and that. But after one or two days or weeks I always quitted slowly but surely. But then once I had a really bad health condition after lockdown, and I decided I will try running, at least just once a week. And after trying that out, I absolutely fell in love with running in the morning. And since I was flexible with myself, didn't set up a bar how many and when, I actually do it for at least 2 months now. And I also increased the number of 3 times a week, because I really do like it. Since that my health improved and it really became a routine, and the only thing I had to do is just find a better way I love to do.
I like this, because everyone talks about "SMART" goals (Measurable, Accurate, etc., I forget the rest), but I always find that I just don't do them. My failure makes me more depressed and unlikely to try. If I have a theme, I can't fail, and that's way better. Thank you, Grey.
Don't use that as an excuse to slack off. If you never hit any targets then you're still failing. The idea of themes is to make things easier for you, but many things you want/need in life don't come so easily that you can just nonchalantly walk towards them-- sometimes you have to work hard. Grey's idea of themes is a good start, but really you should focus on moving from themes to systems and you should still set targets within those systems-- but they should be more stoic of goals. So instead of focusing on output, they focus on input. It's not 'read ten books in a season' but rather 'spend at least 20 minutes reading every day that you can'. That way you're still pushing yourself every day, but if you miscalculated or can't do it for reasons outside your control, it doesn't completely throw you off your resolution/objective.
@@ZLunas Exactly! We can only do our best-- so that should be considered a victory. Plus if I legitimately have school work and real work all day, then get caught helping family, I can't possibly spend two hours reading nor can I study Spanish. If my goal was just to knock out X chapters of my book, i'd feel disappointed when i miss my target-- but if my goal is based on doing what I can, when I can (while still measuring it) then that day doesn't count as a loss.
Without looking anything up, my guesses: Simple, Measurable, Accurate, Realistic, Timeable (is that a word). But seems it is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-based. Guess the S and the A got Switched Around.

0:21 - "Quit Reddit" YOU WERE THE ONE WHO GOT ME INTO THIS MESS, GREY!!! (been enslaved to that red-eyed alien since I saw your "What Is Reddit" video back in 2014)
I haven't used Reddit in a while, and i can safely say that the "Not Social Media" site i almost as toxic as Twitter, and i can't understand why i would want to get into a petty argument, other then when i'm on Reddit, i just avoid Social Network sites, other then RUclips, because i enjoy it, as it has different genres, and it doesn't always feel like its about politics, sometimes it is, but it's more productive then arguing about our views, and no one budging, because the only way to change someones mind is to let them do it them self...
I actually did this at the beginning of the year before seeing this video!! This year was the YEAR OF SLEEP. And thanks to the situation of 2020 I definitely have been getting more sleep than I used to.
Similar thing happened with me, I set 2020 as my “Year of Do Nothing”, and coincidentally happened to get a full year of free time to do just that. I wish that could happen more often (for different reasons obviously)
While I know this a joke, the point of themes is that they can adapt: since you can't meet them in person as much, the idea is that your theme will adapt, so call them or something instead. If you'd made a resolution that was, 'Meet up with a friend every weekend.' sure, you'd have failed, but you can't fail a theme.
Thank you, this is really what I needed. I had trouble finding direction in life after quitting a debilitating heroin addiction and endangering my relationship with my girlfriend. I still got college, I study International Relations in the Netherlands. First time around I watched this it really inspired me and after a few weeks I can really say that it helps, thanks a huge lot, Grey.
I made 2020 the Year of Independence, and I moved out of my parents’ house in July and started my own mask-making endeavor during lockdown. Mission accomplished! I’m lucky I didn’t set it to “Year of Travel” or “Year of Socializing.” 2021 will be the Year of Art for me! Let’s do it! 😊
Old Wes have you watched the video? That was a necessary point to make for what he was trying to say, and the diverging paths of the future are something familiar to Grey, so why critique him for saying it?
@@O_Canada The imagery in this cool quote illustrates the futility of over-investing in making plans for a path you can't yet see. "Translation" is not the art of stripping out the poetry from an evocative turn of phrase.
It's currently mid December 2021, my theme for this year was year of me, I'd been in a really bad place for the past few years and not every one around me was around me, for me, so this past year I've been trying to be better, for myself, and the people around me, I'm still not exactly stable, but I'm in a better place than I was in January, and I think I'm ready for 2022: the year of people. I want to try help some of my friends who I know are struggling with things I have, meet new people who could go on to become amazing friends, and maybe learn a few things along the way. Basically, thank you Grey, your videos have made me a better person and you have no idea how grateful I am because of that.
Goals must be both specific AND realistic in order to be achievable. There is no point making a goal that is miles away from your present reality, you will fail (see above) and then feel bad about yourself for not attaining the impossible. The theme model solves this by NOT BEING A GOAL, which allows you (in theory) all the benefits of change without any pressure.
Watching this again in preparation for 2021 and a particular line at 1:34 really hit me: "Even just decelerating the negative is a positive." I think, this year in particular, that's something we could all do to be reminded of.
Thank you for this idea! This year (2021) my theme is: Year of Respect. Respecting myself and my worth, respecting my body and what it does for me, respecting others, etc
I was going to address spending an entire year improving only one aspect of yourself doesn’t seem very productive. Seasonal themes seem like a fantastic idea both in terms of productive change and avoiding burnout. You could even have a yearly or biyearly theme routine or have certain re-occurring themes apply to certain seasons. For example having “fitness season” during the summer where it’s easier to go outside and there’s more sunlight or “reading season” while we spend more time indoors during the winter.
THIS is what I need. I have so many things I want to improve in my life and they all feel equally important… this allows me to try multiple goals while still maintaining focus

So I watched this video a year ago and decided that my 2021 theme would be health. I actually totally forgot about that but apparently my brain stored it somewhere 'cause I actually did a lot to stay health this year. I finally started to go to a gym and lost weight so I am not overweight and at risk of obesity associated diseases anymore. Also my mental health became a way better.
Wow dude, hella proud of you

After 10 years in self-imposed isolation, I decided to make this year's theme "Collaboration". That's turning out well...
You can still maybe live with a roomate or engage more with people online, maybe buy a vr headset. Or come up with some thing else idk. Also maybe change the theme to something that's more doable if the current theme isnt working for you
@@xpearl_heartx Its next year.. Thats all I have to say
@@ZLunas Themes and goals serve different purposes, both are still useful.
Without looking anything up, my guesses: Simple, Measurable, Accurate, Realistic, Timeable (is that a word). But seems it is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-based. Guess the S and the A got Switched Around.

broad long term goals, specific short time goals
Goals must be both specific AND realistic in order to be achievable. There is no point making a goal that is miles away from your present reality, you will fail (see above) and then feel bad about yourself for not attaining the impossible. The theme model solves this by NOT BEING A GOAL, which allows you (in theory) all the benefits of change without any pressure.

I was absolutely inspired by your video and have often broken resolutions like many people early in January! I love the idea of a yearly theme to foster positive changes and help meet a broader goal! I’m hoping my followers will check out your video and share it with others! Thanks for making great videos with both educational and entertaining content!

Literally my brain in a nutshell
Love how he made this late January in 2020. He had no idea, huh. And it turned out to be the best year for a message like this
Watched this video a year ago and tried making it the year of health. I've lost 7 kilos in all, the most I've ever been able to, only because I allowed myself to make decisions flexibly and experiment within the spectrum of "health"
Whee, I'm gonna try something else this year, it's quite exciting!
Congrats!
Congrats! How'd 2021 go for ya?
Hey, how'd it go ?
Congrats! I'm glad you were able to accomplish real change, and I hope 2023 works as well!

I was 100% expecting a "sponsored by audible" message right here.
Billy Branch lol same
Grey has actually shifted his business model to focus on his Patreon supporters rather than his sponsors, so he's unlikely to have many sponsors going forward. He's even cut the sponsors out of many of his older videos.
I think it was a subliminal sponsorship.
"Not all tools need sharp edges" is an attitude that is **severely** lacking in Grey's early videos.
I would have never subscribed if he'd kept that level of snark
Lord Voldemort I too am confused
Andy Wilderness can you tell me some such videos that are snarky? I’d love to see them
@Andy Wilderness No one was getting even remotely defensive. I also haven't noticed the snarkiness and am curious which videos you (or others) felt were "snark incarnate".
I don't think "years of videos" is very many videos when it comes to CGP.
It was actually a long and unpredictable journey.
Yesterday I realized that I did it that far because I chose a theme for my year and stopped being like 'I totally will go to a gym next month and start following diet tomorrow'. And I came here to thank you
Really dude? Like/// Really& Did i gave you any indication where to get gasoline/ The cartoons are more ANNNgry fot the FOX sake
Jokes on you, I’m following your advice on how to be as unhappy as possible!
They are very easy to follow, too (y) !
If you want to be unhappy, aren’t you happy if you are unhappy?
Perhaps unhappy being unhappy. Mission success. Happy?
"Try it out in the coming season"
I need _less_ procrastination, Grey, not more. :P
sounds like someone needs a season of focus ;)
So try it out in the current season.
Season of Productivity
Season of Action
Who knows, the year of procrastination might be your thing!
This years theme for me: The Year of Hobbies. I want to find myself through my hobbies again.
Yes! Great idea. My theme is art.
My theme is reading
My theme for this year is financial security. Basically I want to save as much money as possible because after the next academic year I am transferring to a 4 yr Uni and I won't be able to get a full ride scholarship there... I think.
First read "Year of Hobbits"
