all i took away from this video was that every mundane thing i do sounds way more important if i imagine its on a spaceship.
Whelp. This'll be my new self pep-talk for the coming weeks.
That in itself is a valuable lesson.
Being positive and productive during a lockdown is extremely important because extended isolation, especially in an unchanging setting, often leads to depression, anxiety, and suicide. It is so hard to find a reason to keep going when you are repeatedly met by the same room(s), little social contact, little freedom to explore or see the outside world. It's even worse if you're one of the many people who has been put out of a job, or who is now trapped in a home with someone abusive, or if you already struggled with a mental illness. Good health, routines, personal time, and projects that give you purpose are all essentials to help combat a terrible situation like extended isolation due to a pandemic.

ROOOOAAAAST!
@CommandoDude well CGP Grey has much time like us, as such he may have had more time to work on videos, thus this.
I feel like this is general life advice that goes beyond just during the shutdowns.
It is, because as much as people want to treat this situation as unique (and it is, but only in the specifics) this sort of isolation is not new to all of us. It's very good advice, provided you are in a life that fits this video's assumptions; one with sufficient personal space to separate things and no other crew members actively working against you.

Precisely. This is required viewing, pandemic or no pandemic.
Boy do I have a podcast for you...
Yeah. I've been on (in)voluntary lockdown since December '19 so this video should help me more :D
IMPORTANT NOTE: You do not need a pandemic or a lockdown order to create the spaceship You. It is now November 2021, and I am FINALLY starting to create my spaceship. Long overdue, but I know there are at least a few of you out there in similar situations.
Agree. Started the ship in 2022 and it's running smooth.

Sooo true! I didn't start to figure it out til around June 2021. And I didn't have confidence til a year later. It grew all along the way, and still falters from time to time. But creating my spaceship .... very nice metaphor.
The music choice is genius here. At the beginning, he has some of his normal music until spaceship you lifts off, changing to a melancholy piano piece as he talks about the changes ahead before fading into a positive space-like theme as he explains the stations on spaceship you.
I didn't realize that! Cool :)
We may take it for granted, but CGP Grey's videos are literal works of art
I don't think we appreciate just how good of a writer Grey is.

hes always been a great writer, remember the dragon video. he's good with rhymes and most of all rhythm.

Captain's Log 2021/10/20: It has been approximately a year and a half since launch, though we are now in a state where inter-pod existence is possible, I am still largely within my own pod. Outside factors have damaged the mental half of the core, but re-watching this guide has set me on a path to recovery. Thank you, Admiral Grey, thank you.
Captain's log 2022/3/14: we are nearing the 2 year anniversary of this previously thought 2 week launch, and I don't think it will be the last. We have been allowed to do manned missions onto the planet via mini shuttles on the station, though not allowing to leave without safety equipment, preventing harm to others. Though my mental health remains absolute, people who deny these safety precautions are testing my patience towards others. There has even been a ongoing conflict between the Ukraine station and Russia station about how "Russia is rightfully taking back their ship", seeing how Russia station is going economy and socialy, it's pathetic really. This conflict is drawing out every western station bisness including fuel of our pods, causing inflation. I really wish our species couldn't screw ourselves over petty crap, though I do hope we pull through Admiral Grey, signing off...
Captain's Log 2022/04/10: It now has been 2 years! I feel as if it might last forever! But the leaders of the captains (aka us) now allow us to go back on earth on mini shuttles but I can't leave the shuttles. But people have now begun to return to earth better than before, but not me... I keep my family spaceship and my own spaceship running. I hope that someday me and my family (aka my crew) will join the ones who returned better than before - RECORDING STOPED -
Captain's log 2022/4/18: Only a few days have passed, more and more people are leaving their pods to go back to the planet (I.e Earth), I might go leave my pod, but I will wait till it is all clear. And thank you too everyone who are still here, it may have been a struggle, but we can find a way out of this mess, God's speed. End Log.
Captain's log 20/04/2022: Due to a malfunction on my ship's navigation computer, I am currently orbiting a black hole. The gravitational pull is really strong, and my ship's engines can't sustain burns for long enough. The core has died out, but I'm finally able to prime it back. Even then, Addiction A*'s pull is too strong for my ship currently, so I'm slowly drifing away into the singularity. I don't know if I can resist for much longer, or if I'll be free from this gravity well at all. This communicator video really helped me, but I am currently uncapable of escaping this singularity. If I make it, I'll contact you again. Captain Darth out.
Captain's Log 2022/04/22: It's been a while, honestly. Things are starting to feel surreal..things like the Russia-Ukraine War, and other problematic situations. And though it may seem that we are stuck in this never-ending launch of our space shuttles, things will indeed get better. And though the previously mentioned war doesn't seem to have large plans of yielding, surely this cannot go on forever. Re-watching this guide has really given me, and the crewmates on the ship, a new source of hope through this, so if we get through this, no...when we get through this, we will finally be able to return to Earth better than before. Thank you, Admiral Grey, thank you. Caption HoOmanOnEarth signing off. -RECORDING ENDED-
I feel like this could just be for people who are moving out to live on their own.
Was gonna say....this should be required viewing at some point in everyone's life...
that's fair
Very true! I was going to move into an apartment for the first time since college, but I've been forced to stay in my spaceship for a while longer. This plan of action will help a lot, especially the sleep boundary!
YES
I just moved out and this was exclactly what I was thinking of doing!
Parents: "CLEAN YOUR ROOM! YOU CAN´T LIVE LIKE THAT!"
Me: "Yeah, maybe later"
Grey: "Your living place should be clean and nice"
Me: "Omg, he´s right, Imma do it"
It's kinda like if someone's being super angry and bossy about something you're gonna want to do it less; but if someone's being calm and steady, you're gonna want to do it more.
Yeah, parents can get emotional when it comes to that stuff, maybe it kinda triggers them or something, like they are thinking about when they were younger, or they worry their kid will become a screw up or something... idk I don't have kids but my friends and siblings do
Parenting is hard.

More than "lockdown productivity", this is an intro to "how to get through a depressive episode".

Yeah, its fantastic advice on that front
they meant "intro" as in "introduction" not introvert
@@Whitsoxrule1 The comment is editted. first it said introverts
If you can start the core on your own, you're in the "lazy zone" and nothing more. A depressed person can't even leave the couch for food because food doesn't matter to them, it's just something required to stay alive, which also happens to be something that is questioned in terms of importance.

Using seperate operating systems also helps. I use Ubuntu for programming, but I play games on Windows, since I'm not a psychopath.
Ok so I know what u said is the general consensus but y is Linux based compilation often preferred over windows? All I 'know' is that linux's file hierarchy works differently (represents i/o n devices with directories) and has makefile but other than that I haven't seen how it is more capable than windows
@@0O0O0O0O0_ It's lightweight and cheap (many Unix implementations are free and open-source, after all). It's common to see it on a wide variety of machines, especially servers.
I'm still a student myself so I can only provide a simple answer, but I think it boils down to ubiquity - "I use X because everyone else here does." If your employer (as a CS-related worker) uses Unix on its servers, why make things complicated for yourself by NOT using Unix?
There's also the fact that most (if not all, but again, my experience is shit and miniscule compared to others') Unix implementations these days come with Git, and virtually every programming project uses Git or some other version control system. Windows has Git but as a third-party software; operating systems like Ubuntu have it preinstalled and ready to go on the command line.

Edit: should also add that time/routine is a great way to divide up mental states. Now is work time... Now is exercise time... etc...
One trick that really needs to be mentioned: if there is some sort of breakdown with the different zones like no longer being creative in the creative zone, then change the room layout to start over.

Some things he does are truly strange even though he says it's the ONLY right way (which makes him a little naive sometimes)
Other times his way of thinking about productivity and the world around him, shows us a different perspective on things which can help improve our own situation.

Well, I guess I'm fucked then.
Lone Starr same here but i think getting in the mindset of this structure in your own home also can be achieved through time management. so instead of “only sleeping in this space” try “only sleeping at that time” and that goes for every other aspect mentioned in this video. for example i started keeping a sort of daily diary/planner in which i first write what i WANT to do that day and then what i actually did which helps keeping track of progress and maybe discovering habits.
I have a single computer desk with monitors where I eat, work, play. The only thing I don't do here is sleep, my sleep station is sanctified. But this is how it was before the pandemic...only now realizing that might be part of my issues.

The visualization is godlike.
Because spinning the ship by keeping the core running will generate artificial gravity.
So you will end up in disorder if your physical and mental health is bad, because there will will no gravity.
So the disorder is pictured by the abscense of Gravity which does make a lot of sense in my opinion.
Also if there is no gravity then it will be harder to get the core running again, which also translates to real life.
without gravity the items from all the stations will also go everywhere

a tiny suggestion, if I may: just start separating those spaces bit by bit. I started working from home a month after the pandemic hit and was struck with the same issue: "work from my PC with all those destractions? no way!"
But it took nothing more than creating a separate user where the desktop, the bookmarks - everything! - is about my work. Once work is over: logout, log into recreation space. On top of that i started to game with a controller from the couch right behind my chair sometimes, or just stand up with the controller in hand. It's the same space, but it does not feel like it is.
As for your barren workout schedule: just do 10 or 20 minutes a day, it doesnt have to be a three hour shredding marathon. Any yoga/Qi-gong/bodyweight workout video that you like and is well explained will get you going. The first week might be harsh, but from then on you'll start to feel better.

So it seems there are a lot of people here who are already in a dark place and are going "well I'm already depressed and apathetic I can't get motivated to exercise" and the "non-optional" part seems more like intimidation than encouragement. CGP Grey says, "PRIME with the physical". If he'll allow me to elaborate on that:
ANYTHING BETTER THAN ZERO.
What this means is, don't berate yourself because you can't go from an amorphous blob of CheezyChips to doing 3-hour HIT workouts. Mark off a place in your spaceship (or just designate a "Sacred Wristband of Exercise" if you live in a closet, there's no excuse) and start with. . . something. One push-up, maybe, or whatever you can manage. ONE. Of something you can do. That's it. That's your starting point. When the Physical gauge is at zero, 0.00001 is still better than zero. ANYTHING is better than zero. If the next day all you can still manage is one, that's fine. Do it again. Do exactly one push-up/sit-up/jumping jack/whatever. Next day, do it again. If you're feeling up for it, try two! Or stick to one if that's all you can manage. Anything is better than zero. If you betray yourself and forget, don't worry -- next day, do what you can, even if it's just one again. It's still better than zero.
Breaking a poisonous cycle is infinitely harder than climbing a slope when you have momentum. So that first whatever is enormous. Just the very act of ritualizing exercise, no matter from where you start, is meaningful. It's the start that leads to progress. So spend THREE SECONDS to do that one thing, and then pat yourself on the back for having accomplished it. Why not? It's better than what you did yesterday!
Anything better than zero.
Thanks. That helps a lot. I’m having surprisingly tremendous trouble with this. I’ll try a few half-push-ups tomorrow.
@Renagadde IKR Even tomorrow is better than never. Small steps.
@Renagadde IKR I do get it, but even that is better than nothing at all. At least you have the intention of doing it, even if you never actually get to it. It's a step toward fixing a problem. Now you know what to do, next step is getting yourself to actually do it, i.e. getting out of that procrastination cycle. Of course, if you can avoid the cycle by all means do avoid it. But sometimes you can't. That's why it exists in the first place. There's a lot friction involved before you get that momentum going.
Add to that that not doing it for a day doesn't mean you failed at that goal you might have set. Instead of seeing it as a streak, see it as a percentage of times that you should've done it. That way you don't fail when you miss a day, because that can be discouraging. Once stopped because you failed, it is surprisingly easy to not try again. When using something along the lines of % of days that you wanted to do something, it dropped a bit, but you can make it go up again, you haven't failed at your goal and there is an easy way to make it go up again.
This is supposed to be an inspirational comment, not a war of whatever.
I'm watching this in 22 and I think this is immensely powerful and helpful beyond just the pandemic lockdowns. To a certain extent we live on Spaceship You all the time, it's simply docked on Earth again - for me at least that core still needs to be manually spun up even now.
One of the tough things I've encountered is that my "work from home" station (my work desk for 9 hours) is also my "recreation" station (if I want to play games after work). Recently I've started blasting some music and working out *right after* work from home is done. It forces me to get up and do something completely different, even if it's just the other side of the desk (my apartment is very small). Then, if I decide to go back to the desk, I can be in a different headspace and convert it over mentally.
Thank you for this. I really like the metaphor and the timing is great. I allowed myself to adjust to the lifestyle change, and then to recover from a loss, and now I'm ready to pull myself back up and start the core spinning again.
What I do is changing the light, yep, I put two light bulbs, one blue and one yellow. I also change the keyboard color. Anything can serve as a mental trigger, background music, your chair adjustment, the desktop wallpaper, even your clothes. Be creative !
I change out of my work sweatpants and into my recreation gym shorts.
Stations can be bound by things other than simple physical boundaries! My exercise station is also my sleep station for example, in rough physical terms - but the blankets and pillows get put away first, changing it from a bed to a workout area. And then when the workout is done, the mattress is hung up and it becomes a recreation area. Now, this obviously won't work for most people - they don't have the sorts of beds you strip and hang up and can do exercise on, hah. But the idea is the same. Do something to define your boundaries temporally if you can't define them physically.
You're creating that wonderful boundary of "specific temporal activity" which works well, but also consider reconfiguring or somehow altering the space during the station conversion process so you can see at a glance what state it's in!
I added a seperate username on my computer, only for work, i don't have access to my password manager there so i can't access my "recreation station" there.
You can keep your work/recreation station extremely clean.
Then, when it's work station, move work station accoutrements down into main access points.
Such as, writing utensils with note pad, set music that is work conducive for you, create a work screen that does not have access to games and the like.
When work is done, put the work accoutrements back in their home.
Such as: note pad and pen gets put away, work music is turned off.
When recreation is engaged: fun music turned on, the gaming user gets logged into, gamer headphones are brought down, and maybe a snack is added.
Ambience is important when options are limited.
And keeping it clean helps a lot too.
CGP Grey: This is for Pandemic Lockdown.
Me: This is for literally every introvert.
This has been Grey's modus operandi for years.
It is now that telecommuting is the new normal. Woot, woot!
Introversion doesn’t mean you’re socially anxious or a shut-in. Some of us like people but need alone time to recharge, or we’d rather have three solid friends than a hundred acquaintances.
I see a tendency on social media sites toward introvert memes. These memes usually amount to introverts telling themselves they need to protect themselves from the world or commiserating with one another about the fact that non-introverts do not understand them. Here's a thought, from someone who used to identify as such: maybe enabling this sort of internal dialogue is exactly the wrong approach. Obviously the time isn't right for it at the moment, but if things "get back to normal", focus less on enabling what you want to do, and more on rewarding yourself for taking social risks. I'm not pretending this is easy or trivial - again, speaking from first-hand experience. But it can be more rewarding feeling like you're participating in the social lives of your peers rather than feeling like it's a movie you're watching where you have no agency.
Don't get sucked into "introversion as identity" because you took a some pseudoscientific pop-psychology trash test like Myers-Briggs when you were 16. Your identity isn't four letters.
@@delusionnnnn "These memes usually amount to introverts telling themselves they need to protect themselves from the world or commiserating with one another about the fact that non-introverts do not understand them." So? That's how memes work for almost every group that falls outside the social norms. You'll see the same stuff for everything from the chronically ill to furries. You sound like one of those people who made the switch to being a lark from a night owl and acts like every night owl is secretly a lark. Your avoidance of people must have been based on something other than your personality (maybe environment? depression?). For me, I enjoy hanging out with other people, but there comes a point where I *have* to leave. If my job forces more social interaction than usual, I have to reduce the time I spend with my family at home to make up for it. If making a change worked for you, great, but that doesn't mean everyone who lived like you did will be happy with the same change.
9:30 I discovered some "Station hacking" by accident:
You don't need to change stations, you just need to trick yourself (your senses) into believing you've done so.
Vision, I've been changing the lighting on my room every time I slack off by accident *-
Hearing, I've been tricking myself on purpose by playing a 10H of Office/Café Sounds videos.
Taste, drink with Coffee with work, and plain water or other stuff when slacking.
*- I have a yellow-light bulb on my room and a white-light one on my desk, which I turn off whenever I don't have to watch my keyboard nor notebook carefully (playing games, watching movies, etc). I didn't realize how this was helping me 'till I watched this video. Thanks Grey.
