The government testing nukes in Nevada is like stealing somebody’s food and licking it so they can’t steal it back
Nevada are you sure you want this land that we’ve nuked dozens of times? You’re cool with me keeping it right? Cool thanks.
That's a perfect analogy
Most underrated comment
@Nunya Business Yes, but the testing was done on a tiny portion of it. Look at the map again. Nevadans were butting heads with an organization called BLM long before it was cool because it controls so much in the state. Whether it’s a farmer’s water rights being violated, a rancher just trying to let his cattle graze, or anyone being bothered by wild animals, BLM is always in somebody’s way. I don’t think most Nevadans would mind the state taking control of a bit of useless land (even if it meant a tax hike) if it meant that the feds weren’t there to make the parts that ARE useful (including land owned by individuals) a pain to use.
To be fair to the federal government, almost all of the state is practically uninhabitable anyways. It's just, a huge desert.
If there's ever any doubt about the Forest Service's mission, just note that it's in the Department of Agriculture. A National Forest is essentially a great big tree farm. And as such, those nearby can get a Christmas Tree for WAY less than you would spend at a Christmas Tree Farm. And by that I mean for a $10 permit you're allowed to take a tree any size up to 20 feet. You just have to be able to haul it yourself (and cut it down without killing yourself or anyone else).
Natural forests are great for legal bonsai poaching as well. 10 bucks for a legal tree, as old and weathered as you can find, all for a low flat rate.
Ah so that's why the federal government is inefficient and has so many legal loopholes.

Having lived in the barracks it is very interesting to find out why they are immune from housing regulations... Thank you
…and HOAs!
That’s why military bases have terrible housing. This explains everything
That's terrible. There ought to be federal regulations.
It cant be blamed on them alone, a long time ago they hired contractors to manage the housing, these contractors took the money that they were given, and immediately tried to us as little of it as possible and then charge as much for it as they can, the army is actually in a long legal battle with most of these companies to try and kick them and there money stealing butts off of the installation but they didn't make it easy for themselves back when this all started.

An excellent podcast sort of showcasing this example is "The Timber Wars", which is about the management/sale of old growth forest and how selling forests for timber puts the balance of endemic animals off. Coming from a western state (Idaho) I can say that large amounts of federal land aren’t all bad. We have access to pretty much any place we want to go to because it’s mostly accessible to the public. It’s really nice being able not be limited by fences like in the eastern states.
The northwest in general is proud of its federal lands because they are largely public, we love the nature anyways, and BLM keeps logging to reasonable levels. The southwest and midwest has some major and legitimate concerns due to abuse and mismanagement of federal lands for commercial (and as stated in the video, military) purposes. Federal land is fine until the fed ignores the welfare of the state land and people around it.
Exactly. As your neighbor to the South the vast majority of our economy is based on tourism to the lands, whether the ski resorts (usually Forest Service) or the 5 National Parks we've got.
Yep. Gotta love free camping on BLM land
Notice that the western states are ALSO very concerned about federal laws and tend to be the liberal ones pushing updates to federal laws, while eastern and southern states tend to focus more on state sovereignty and "states rights" wanting as little federal involvement as possible. It makes a lot of sense that you'd care what America thinks if over half your land is America.

As an American from the West, this is why we are constantly complaining about Federal Land. Americans in the East don't understand why Red, Blue, or other, Western Americans tend to universally hate federal land (not saying to get rid of national parks, just maybe don't drop atomic bombs on us and wonder why so many people have cancer)
As a Utahn, my biggest issue is how we have beautiful places for recreation and tourism. They get sold out for oil and mining frequently. However, somehow our state tends to give away those resources a lot faster than the feds. Feds usually back off, state usually says f*** off.
Cancer mostly comes from tumors, not from radioactivity from the bombs. Cancer is even throughout the continent. They test their nuclear bombs in juuuuuuuuust the right places so that they don’t have to travel far, but no radioactivity reaches humans.
@@thesuperioroneu2628 tell that to my grandfather who died from brain cancer. He was considered a downwinder and my grandmother received money from the government. And his cancer was from a tumor as well, if you were exposed to radiation early in life you are more likely to develop cancerous tumor a later in life. It's what happened to survivors of the bombs in Japan. Look up downwinders in the United States, it's not some conspiracy theory, it's public knowledge
@@gg-eo6ez I didn't say too much federal land is good, the U.S DEFINITELY needs to give more land to the public, I'm just saying more brain cancer because of radiation from nuclear bombs sounds pretty far fetched.

I live in Oregon. We have over half of the state federally managed. We hike, bike, camp, fish, and hunt all over our federal lands, here. Over 400,000 hikers live in our state alone. I've hiked on over 800 miles in the last 5 years, and almost all of it has been on federal land.
Most states cannot be trusted to manage land. Overall, federal land does a better job at preserving OUR land for recreation and preservationist reasons. On the east coast, most of the land is developed and privately owned, and because of that, it is generally far more altered and off-limits to recreation. On the west coast, we are SO LUCKY to have all this federal land to explore, hike in, and enjoy. Remember, much of national forest land is designated as wilderness, which means that it is set aside in a completely natural state, for primitive recreational activities, such as hiking and backpacking. Yay!
Recreation and tourism is far more important than resource extraction. Fact: the outdoor recreation economy is larger than all other resource extraction economies, combined. It supports over 7 million jobs, and makes billions of dollars. Makes sense to preserve it!
That's awesome, and I think a large portion of land should be set aside, but recreational activities are not more important than resource extraction, without those resources you wouldn't have any time for recreational activities, You'd be spending all of your time working just so you wouldn't starve to death.
Tntmod54321 Not true. Most of our wood goes to China.
In addition, we have enough private timber lands to supply enough wood for us. We don’t need to despoil or public lands for the sake of extraction.

I hear from Europeans all the time about things like how transportation should be changed here, but they don't understand how dependent we are on cars and the interstate highway system.
Which is precisely why it needs to change. Depending on cars and trucks is a very bad idea, especially due to climate change
@@vulpes7079 You can't depend on public transit when everyone is miles away from each other and all going in different directions... Literally not viable. Cars are modern horses, not train replacements.
@@MERCENARYTAO1 "miles away from each other and going different directions"
Which is why every public transport system has its stops, its transport hubs, etc. Doesn't take a genius to figure this out
@@vulpes7079 Are you European? Cause it’s pretty obvious you don’t understand just how exactly spread out America is. Or you can hop in your car and be there in 20 minutes.
