Take it from someone that's painted a lot of cars, I would use a good high build primer or you will see every imperfection on black, also don't use nason clear or you will have to buff it every time you wash it, on that car I would buy a gallon of nason base from eBay with reducer and hardner, then use a gallon of chroma-clear for clear coat
I recommend getting a small bottle of fisheye. Fisheyes can really ruin a paint job. Also, it doesn't look like you have an inline dessicant to dry your air out before it goes into the spray gun. They sell the little dessicant traps that screw into the spray gun line. Good for small jobs like this and are cheap. I was kind of shocked to see they still sell lacquer spot putty. The catalyzed spot putty is light years ahead of that stuff. Dries fast and sands much better. Talk about an 80's flashback, wow
Tip for painting in your garage: to reduce dust etc. use a watering can to just lightly coat the floor with water. Any dust present will not touch the paint.
Love it when a mechanic tries to do the body work, prep, and paint Hahaha.. like your videos very informative but your collision skill no comment couple things you did wrong but you got the right idea..
50sKid you should have gave your self more room for the primer, to avoid the hard primer line. (Amazing spraying by the way was pretty funny).Primer surface should be usually in 150- 180 but you can get away with it in 320. A little tip if you use a razor blade to put down the putty on chips it's a lot easier and less time sanding.
Very cool man. I have no bodywork experience but went really slow and spent a couple months fixing up an old Miata. Had to redo the sanding/filler steps a couple times but eventually got it correct. When the paint went down it almost looked like a decent collision shop job, except the dry spray I have to fix. You just gotta do it and screw it up a couple times to learn.
you did the paint as well ? couse i cant find it . btw , think your channel is AWSOMEE !!! that rebuild m54 was just AWSOMEE !! i love how you leave the faults in the films couse we are all human !! i have an e46 but mine misses 2 cylinders hahaha , did the same thing 4 years ago ... men i wish this channell was here back than hahaha !! take care my friend . oohhh a burningg question : what is your dayjob ?? Greetings from the Netherlands !!
Just a tip on feeling the flaws, put a baggie over your hand, turn your hand palm side up and drag your fingernails across the surface. It magnifies the touch. Works great when compounding and waxing a car as well. Thanks for the Video DEADF15H
I'm not a body man, just someone with experience with finishes. I once prepped a 1976 Dodge "Shaggin' Wagon" van for paint. Black. Auto paint surface prep is unforgiving, black is worst of all. Lesson I learned: never cut corners.
You should have put a blanket or something that has electrostatic on the engine baie. Been there done that (without the blanket i mean) and man, it was a nightmare to clean all the sanding dust from all the little spots under the hood. I had to use a pressure washer to get a good result and it was on a pretty simple car with no electronics. I am not sur i want to pressure wash a bmw engine bay.
+Beyond Repair simply because I didn’t have primer in a spray can and I did have the DTM primer already on the shelf. Didn’t want to spend extra money. Only takes a few more minutes to mix it up. But either way works.
Juan Vega that's a orbital polisher depends on brand you want they are either cheap or can get up there in 400. He just use 6 in belcro sand paper on it.

+Crook Ed thanks definitely doing that and more 👍
Would be cool to do a livestream repair for a change
No putty, use the filler epoxy primer, 2-3 localized coates, sanding between coats will fill all scratches perfectly.

+Diego Alcaraz what did I do wrong? Something I don't realize?

Oh yeah and it really helps to learn on a car you don’t care so much about or one that already has ruined paint.
great video! can't wait for the paint!
Great effort. ... hope it all pays off with the final coat..
when are we going to see an E31 in the garage :)
Just FYI...Should have used dewaxer before sanding.

+toto dona yeah I’ll wash it. Plan to make a video on it
compressed air will take care of that right quick
Why not save some time and just rattle can the primer since the primer is going over pained surfaces?

It would take longer you actually would they have to resand the primer with 600grid making sure it's flat especially black.
What brand DA is that?

thoes mark i think were tree sap
ufff the video was very long and something boring :(
+Titanium E46 4Ever I’m sorry ya didn’t like it. I’ll try to make the editing tighter in the future.
