- It's a rally rocket for the road. A lightweight, pocket-sized, all-wheel drive, three-cylinder turbo screamer with enough grunt to blow the doors off performance cars twice its size.
Yes, it's the much-anticipated Toyota GR Yaris, the basis for homologation of Toyota's 2021 World Rally Championship contender. And remember, Toyota won the manufacturer's title in 2018, the driver's championship last year, and is leading the WRC pack in 2020. So, it's a significant arrival, packing a huge amount of tech into a compact, entertainingly racy package.
Toyota invited us to a local launch program, including open and closed road driving opportunities, so we could see what all the fuss is about.

This car has everything needed and has removed anything unneeded. Truly a car we wanted...
Almost. That stuck-on tablet sat-nav is unneeded and should be removed
the exhaust sound via speaker should be removed as well.
$50k+ should be removed as well.
@@iandavidson99 Japan have the GR Yaris RC version that's got the screen delete
Excellent review, thank you 🇬🇧👍
Great informative review!
Seemingly a hot hatch indeed Hotshot review
What road are you driving on at 5:10?
That small driving part you really do give it stick
Look at that seat height. Imagine Richard berry trying to squeeze into that. Had a look at one the other day.. lacking for any compartment storage and the infotainment screen is such low resolution.
Hi James, @carsguide. Great review. I live in Melbourne, can I ask what driving roads did you use for this review?? Im looking to do some more driving with my Golf R on the open roads. thanks so much !
Sell the R and buy a PROPER driver’s car. Then you can enjoy “Driving roads”.
This is Brindabella Road near Cotter Dam and Paddy’s River Rd near Tidbinbilla. 20 minutes from Canberra.
@@mgohanlon thank you
This isnt the model with Forged rims. Assumr they are cast or at best flow formed.
Seems like a well sorted little hot hatch, but for 50k i'll wait and see a bit longer.
I think it’s 30k
Yes. The answer is yes.
Amazing, great, lovely car!!! Great review!!! Just a note! - 5:35 The noise on the inside of the car is fake - it is coming from the sound system of the car, sorry mate haha
Hype of a mark IV supra and lives up to it
Great line. It’s hard not to Dip Into It on a regular basis.
No because the intercooler water spray has been removed in the uk!!! Bloody pissed me right off.....is it still installed in aus??
I think it not there either but there is a space for it. I think it comes with the track package but not sure about that.
Unfortunately no
Think it’s a Japan only feature
The water spray was only in the first edition signature model in Japan, like the first 100 cars or something, you can buy the kit from TGR soon.
Is the white car the solid white or pearlescent white?
Being the non rallye version it would be solid white. The rallye model comes in the pearl white. This applies to Australian cars.
Does it come with cruise control?
Yes and adaptive cruise.
I live in the uk got mine on order 👍
And me
@@edwardvickers5506 Me too
Me too, black one, circuit pack.👏👏
Me three! Going to sit along side golf r 7.5 stage 1, so we will see if it lived up to hype. I suspect I will not be disappointed.
500th Like...I'd love it a lot more if it had a smaller rear view mirror
I like this cars.....
Abis nonton vlog Vitra Eri langsung kesini
Only the interior is a little bit jagged.
Looking to trade kidney for a GR Yaris
So, this is what Walter Whites been upto these days..
😂😂😂 no but seriously he is a good reviewer.
Enkei are not forged
Don’t think anyone has anything bad to say about this car
I always knew Toyota had it in them to produce something this fun to drive so good bye Honda civic SI 😃
I'm one of the one thousand lucky bastards and always take the long way home
🖐
It's funny how he explains about the engine sounding, "a real roar about it"......Maybe it's got to do with the artificial noise played through the speakers. *facepalm*
Great car but I'd rather get an entry model of Kia Stinger as I'm not so keen on manual transmission.
Imagine a GR Yaris with a DCT
What an awesome thing!
Puzzled why Toyota named a fast and exciting car after a slow and dull car of which it shares almost nothing?
Marketing peeps, putting the b in bonkers since ever...
"which it shares almost nothing" Is the really weird part.
Because the world rally car is a Yaris. ruclips.net/video/FyfOupPZy64/видео.html
@@BFMR1062 But it isn't a Yaris at all now is it. You have completely missed the point.
@@CathodeRayNipplez no you have missed the point. Just like other WRC are i20s, fiestas, polo's. In order to participate they need to base it on a current road car. Anyway who cares what it's called.
@@Philbyyyy Oh FFS. Yes 'BASED' and it's a pretty friggin lose term isn't it. Please list me the factory components left on a WRC car that are totally unmodified direct bolt on from the car it is based on. Won't take you long as it's a pretty short list... Ok, off you go... I'm looking forwards to this...
Mate that engine noise is coming out of the speakers, from outside it sounds like a vacum cleaner
Like a 225K€ Porsche 992 Turbo S😉
@@jpdw7543 thats not a rally car if you're gonna make a rally car make a real sound thats what makes rally cars complete the turbo s has a soft limiter because of new regulations and it sounds awful anyways
What I don’t get is, Toyota says it costs too much develop a sport car. Hence why they partnered with Subaru with the BRZ/86 and the BMW for the new supra. Then out of nowhere they develop this?? A new motor, with a bespoke chassis?? 😂 😂 they should’ve put this effort into the supra.
Would of priced the supra over 150k and that wouldn’t be ok. I rather this for under 50k. More people can afford
@@geokon7192 this is a good point actually. But in saying that if Toyota put effort into building a revised version of their 2JZ motor and put into the current shell. People would buy it. The fact it’s basically a BMW internally has turned people off.
@@OlyMar83 definitely agree would be much more appealing car with a Toyota engine. Never know maybe they will put two Yaris engines together to make a straight six. That would be epic. Interesting also to see what the Nissan 400z will be priced. Nice alternative to the supra being all built by Nissan.
Toyota should do 4 door gr yaris
Hopefully not.
Why ?
@@leonk5793 famiĺy man need 4 door for their kids with super performnce
Great car when you don't get crushed by a truck
So only 99.9999% of the time?
Idiots in here who know nothing about anything
It’s still overpriced for that sized car.
Nope, price has nothing to do with size. The price is great value for specialness you get.
@Bruce Wayne I PREFER Odd number engines. They sound way better. Lookup 5 Cylinder engine, the best sounding compact car engine.
Exclusive shelf, suspension, engine, roof, gearbox, differentials.. Its worth the money!
It's a Mazda 🤷♂️
That is one ugly car
wow first time I see a negative review on the design. Nothing wrong with your opinion im just a but surprised since this car gets so much hype.
As the saying goes, looks don’t win a Rally
Its not the sharpest tool in the shed...One cylinder short and 100klw less from an iconic vehicle...still falls short from the German cars poor effort from the KAMIKAZE LAND.
You clearly know absolutely nothing about cars. Especially cars which give maximum driver satisfaction
@@Rocketed12 indeed, I test drive it and even at low and medium speed, it feels special and unique.
