2021 Toyota GR Yaris review! The Toyota GR Yaris is one of the coolest cars on the market -- an amazing hot hatchback. But the GR Yaris isn't sold in the USA -- so today I'm borrowing one to review the GR Yaris and show you what we're missing. it's also crash safety requirements in America, they don't bother sending a limited run car here cause they know the DOT is gunna crash a dozen or so in tests

The lesson learned here is: when Toyota builds a sporty car they aren't kidding. Amazing.

A comment along the same line exists under almost every single perfomance car review that doesn't have an insane 0-60 time. It's Doug's own decision and I'm sure he has heard this same complaint a million times before, you aren't adding anything new but just purely baiting for some likes

I recently bought a Camry. After being suckered in by the sporty locks and hybrid fuel economy.
It’s the worst car I’ve ever owned (and I’ve owned an echo and a town car) and after 3 months I’m already counting the days until it’s paid for and I can shovel this turd off on someone else.
They truly don’t bother most the time. If this is the best they can do for a sedan. :(

I’ve got a Camry TRD model and it’s probably the best car I’ve owned. If you weren’t going for reliability and safety with good mpg. What were you expecting? They do all 3 of those well. Everything else they could make but don’t. Reliability is the best feature for any car

He was being modest to the focus st. The Yaris is more fun to drive. It makes sense because the ST is more precise that’s what he meant. You need to learn how to listen 😏

I own a Focus RS and I'm still pissed Toyota isn't selling this in the USA. The GR Yaris is like the Fiesta RS that we've always wanted, proper pocket rocket.

I was at a cross roads a few months back between buying a Mitsubishi Evo 8 and a Yaris GR....I went for the evo and my friend went for the GR. Safe to say I made a colossal mistake, my evo has 330bhp but on country roads with tight turns that little Yaris with only 268bhp but 150kg or so lighter, its an even fight, I cant catch up but he cant get away. On the Straights I have the advantage on the top end and start pulling but there's hardly anything between the two cars. He just gets the benefit of Toyota warranty lol definitely a car I regret not buying and I feel bad for you guys over in the USA because the car is absolutely sensational.
Doug was so sweaty at the quirks and features he had to show us. God bless his excitement for us.

I live in San Diego and just spotted this exact Yaris driving around! I got excited seeing a GR Yaris in the US and took a picture, then figured there's probably only one GR Yaris crossing the border into SD, let me check if the plate lines up with this video and it does lol. Small world
My first car (still my only car) was a 2012 2 door Yaris. Honestly I love it, I put it through hell and back and it just doesn't give up.
The roof is actually forged carbon with a wrap. It looks great when naked and polished.
The GR was also developed in the same factory as the LFA by Akio Toyoda and is most likely selling at a loss to Toyota. The thing is somehow more impressive than Doug enthusiastically gave credit.
That sounds exactly like the kind of car Akio Toyoda would be involved in. The guy's a car guy to the core, and will be the one who'll push for cars that really don't make sense financially so long as they make great driver's cars.
So it came from the factory with a real carbon roof covered by a fake carbon wrap? Talk about a quirk

There is a 18 month waiting list in the UK. I think they are on their third run of production aswell

Yaris was never a pathetic car. It is one of the most reliable "cheap" and economic car of today. Sure it is pathetic in sense "muh V8" but in city driving it is the car you want to have next to an EV.

Agreed. I own a 2012 Yaris, bought it new and it still runs and looks great. I guess I'm one of those car owners who doesn't need a status symbol or a beefed-up muscle car to feel a sense of self-worth. I'll take reliability and low-cost maintenance, and the Yaris has certainly been that. It's not fast and doesn't have the bells and whistles, but it gets me from point A to point B.
It is a pathetic car. Even the Accord 2.0 or V6 Accord destroy these in terms of horsepower.

In Europe we have a completely different entertainment system with knobs and a backup camera. Waiting time is around 24 months at the moment.
It is also bigger and much more responsive.

It looks like the Mexican model is the only one without the camera and that weirdly small infotainment system. Mine has a camera and the system like the Corolla.

The US not having the Alpine A110 and the GR Yaris is a real shame. 2 of the best "true philosophy" sport cars that came out in the last years.

Small, light and manual that's still good on fuel... i feel like for the rest of the world feels justified thinking America wouldn't want anything to do with them with their big gass guzzling V8 trucks and SUV's the size of the average country. This is what the researchers find too and that's what ultimately leads to these decisions. Not enough enthusiasts of the formula to justify the production and shipping. Guess people would much rather have their 5.0 liter mustang V8's

The most fun car i have ever driven. In Estonia the aftermarket prices were pretty much immidiately higher than dealership prices when it came out. I know people who tracked it for several months and sold it later with a profit.

@freepieanchipsgarage I paid £36,000 for mine, it had 2,000 miles on already. Uk list price for the circuit pack is £34,000.

This little rocket reminds me of a carlos saints version of a celica. You get a plate that tells you witch number your car is, and also old celica for rally was gt4 and this is a gr4 yaris. Absolutely love it, im getting one one day for sure, this is the carlos saints or gt4 celica of my generation.

You should review the Cupra Leon, it's also a car not sold in the US and it's one of the best hatchback car I've ever seen.
But as always, it’s a detuned Golf GTI or R anyway. Volkswagen which still owns the Cupra (Seat) brand use the best trim for the Gold and sometimes Audi and sells the platform slightly detuned as Seats and Skodas.
Important note: The GR Yaris ONLY shares the headlights, taillights and side mirrors with the regular version. Everything else is bespoke for the GR which is pretty awesome.
But Doug just kept shouting YARIS YARIS YARIS. It`s not a Yaris Doug! And it IS the best little hot hatch around today. Your score board is not to be taken seriously by any pure petrol head of any merit. GR....Gazoo Racing.

Last month I had the ridiculous luck to find myself racing around on the Nurburgring on a tourist drive day and was introduced to these bad boys. I cannot overstate how insanely rapidly they were passing nearly everything there. Keeping pace with M2's, 911s, AMG GTRs, and that ilk. Absolutely sailing past the masses of e36 M3s and Minis.
Three weeks later and I'm still shocked at how competent they are on track.
Purpose built car for racing, I believe it. Really wish they sold these in the States.

I have a MINI myself and met one on a racetrack in Norway. I was surprised by how I was almost able to keep up actually, but it looked like a hoot to drive though!

I own a red one here in Australia. it's a pocket rocket. Excellent 6 speed manual gearbox and grips the road like mud on a blanket.

I have seen one recently in Austria and it is very beautiful and even more aggressive look then from what you can tell in the video.
You can see right away it is a serious performance car in a very small package.

Even as Mexico is THE 2ND MOST POPULOUS COUNTRY (BRAZIL) IN LATIN AMERICA, but no market there can be considered a "mayor market" as US, Japan, Western Europe, India and China (auto makers do cars specifically for each of those) are.
For new cars it is. Lots of Mexicans buy imported used cars from across the border.

I learnt to drive in a manual 04 Yaris. The dials were in the center of the dashboard, there was no tachometer, and it screeched like a bitch whenever it bottomed out - which was pretty frequently. BUT it was so, so charming. I got my license yesterday and am driving my parents' automatic car. It's fun but it doesn't feel anywhere near as interactive, thrilling, and personal as that old junk of a Yaris.
Yeah. I owned one from 2007 to 2017. I think I had change a spark plug. And my wife wrecked it. Twice. Great car for the price.
In New Zealand it started off in about 2001 as the Toyota Echo, then changed to the Vitz in about 05 then the Yaris in about 08. We also got the RS Vitz and Yaris, which is like the sport model with the 1300cc DOHC VVTI engine and alloy wheels etc.

OMG, Doug DOESNT actually crawl into the rear seat BACKWARDS this time 😂. First time ever I think lol.
2 doors are perfect for this car, it's meant mostly for two people and occasionally a child or dog that doesn't mind climbing in back at all. For 4 doors/adults, a bigger car would be better anyway. I imagine it is an amazing daily driver with that transmission, and a head unit upgrade.
Let's hope Toyota will bring GR Corolla to the States, soon...

Good , I am always seeing cars available in the US that aren’t available here now you know how it feels.
The problem: the GR Yaris is built on a one-of-a-kind platform. As such, Toyota is probably losing money on each car made. That's why Toyota will replace it with the GR Corolla, which is built on the current Corolla hatchback platform. As such, it makes it a lot easier to homologate the GR Corolla for the US market.
If GR Corolla, it's not homologation, it will be another hot hatch player since it's not made to obey with the WRC rule. It's not bad, hell no, it will be great really but don't expect it to be as special as this pocket rocket GR Yaris. My 2 cents ...
the reason is there is no market for small cars in US market but outside the US gr yaris sold like a pancake. toyota would need to change the gr yaris just to meet the safety standards. that is probably the reason why they will use the corolla platform in US
In order for them to participate in WRC, they needed to build 25,000 units of GR Yaris in a continuous 12 month period as part of the WRC homologation rules, hence why this car was made and limited production. Akio Toyoda wanted the company to still be represented in WRC, that's why he authorized this project and considered this as his passion project because this is not a joint venture like the 86 and Supra. So ya, in my opinion, i don't think the GR Corolla will be the direct successor because GR Corolla chassis is based on your everyday car and GR Yaris chassis is from rally standards to a road car.

Hey Doug, great video as always. Mexico got the worst version of the GR Yaris. Must have version is the Circuit Pack, featuring sticky Michelin Tyres, front air cooling intakes, low and hard suspension setting, and most important front and rear Torsen limited split diferential.
Mexico got the confort (AKA: Convinience pack) version without any of the confort (parking sensors, rear camera, JBL speakers).
I can understand the hard suspensions setting not being an option, just look at the camera shake and that's in SoCal roads, here in Mex with the baches....ay Diosito! Llantas ponchadas por cada salida jeje.

Amazing. It's a sports hatchback. Got a perfect size for easy driving, can fit a 3rd person if needed, got 4wd for rough terrain, very cool but not too showy.. I think this is the most perfect car ever according to my preferences.

Doug, you missed the quirkiest part of the quirky story as to how that car existed.... They designed and built the car to comply with WRC as you say, then decided they didn't want to rally the car anyway.... But they carried on bringing the GR Yaris to market.... And they make a loss on each one sold!
They just stuck is the current gen car for the time being. They will more than likely create an evo version

Well americans did it to themselves. Instead of buying SUVs, CUVs and Pickups start buying hatchbacks and sedans and they will bring those cars to you.

I had one, loved it so much. The only downsides wer the size obviously and the turn circle was quite large for such a small car.
I now have a RAV4 and that car has about the same turn circle, but it's much larger!
I love my RAV4 more. 😊 It's large, has more power, has more features and rides sweet.

There is another amazing feature/ quark. If u pull the handbrake the rear will lock up indented from the front. So tight turns or 180 are possible with the handbrake
A lot of the issues Doug picks up on are because he’s reviewing a convenience package yaris. The one to have is the circuit pack but perhaps not made available in Mexico…. The circuit pack version that we have in Europe does have a backup camera, it has forged alloy BBS rims and it even has an infotainment with a dial for volume! Although it doesn’t have a HuD or parking sensors hahaha

I agree, Doug underscored it on cool and several other categories. This should be 64 on the Doug score. The Doug Score is too compressed anyway so it is pretty meaningless. It seems clear to me he works backwards from where he wants the car int he rankings.

I really appreciate that this comes with a manual transmission, the ability to decide the front rear torque split, and a manual handbrake, giving so much control to the driver.

Even better, it comes ONLY with a manual. There are GR bodykitted ("GR SPORTS") normal Yarises with a CVT, but not full-on GRs.

UK GR Yaris driver here. It's mad seeing the differences between the UK and Mexican specs! Shame you didn't get to drive the Circuit Pack model with the front & rear limited slip diffs and stickier tyres, Doug!

@@SoteloAldo94 over here you can only get red brake calipers on the circuit pack with the forged alloys, you get a much nicer infotainment system as standard with CarPlay and Android Auto support, reversing cam as standard, but no HUD unless you pay for the “comfort pack”, which nobody did. Also I didn’t get the bag of tools and flashlight. It’s just bizarre that they made so many different versions of this car! When are you getting yours?
