We were among the first in the world to drive the Toyota GR Yaris in 2020 and, like so many others, we were blown away by it's ability on a B-road. Built from the ground top to be a WRC homologation special, the GR Yaris really does feel like a rally car for the road and is arguably once in a generation driving machine.
Well, that's what we thought when we briefly drove it for our first drive video. Now we've had some time with the car to see whether it really is the best driving machine of 2020, or if it was massively overhyped. And it faces some stiff competition this year too, with the likes of the Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition and Porsche 911 Turbo S both impressing. Can the £30,000 rally special really live up to them?

I was thinking to buy it but I'm in the 40ties and need a bigger more mature and comfortable car... then I thought that would have pushed me to drive near the limit (too) many times... in any case I'm sure it's a great satisfaction in the wet, it's true what many reviewer are saying about the limited visibility trough the winds shield, caused by the mirror and the display? how are the dampers? can be used also for daily routines or are mostly rigid for sport driving?
Great car anyway and thank you to Toyota to bring back this genre of cars in the road

Got a new Honda Civic Type R today and it’s just so different to any other car on the road if you love driving. Same with the Yaris, if you are a petrol head you know what I mean. Both cars put a huge smile on your face, and if you love cars and driving you know what I mean, and how most of the expensive German and Italian cars are simply not needed or justified.

Superb review. The Yaris GR here in New Zealand is $55,000 (just the one highly spec’ed model) and managed to secure a white one to be delivered in the coming weeks. Own a Porsche Macan GTS, Audi RS3 and ride motorbikes and Vespa’s. But it’s this car I’m most excited for to take delivery. A 10 minute test drive and I was sold, it really is that good :-)

Love the car. Lotto win I would get the GR and the RAV4 PHEV. However having fun with the GR on B roads, which is appealing, could be highly dangerous. A wide lorry, a slow tractor, a pedestrian or cyclists. There are more accidents on rural country roads than on motorways. Only on track days and private estate roads could one really get the most out of the GR. Love Toyota.

@@YesAutoUK Watching back over some older GR reviews. Funny to see some of the comments re spec decision!
Currently drive an i30N performance pack, with michelin ps4s's replacing pirelli pz4's.
GR in different league as soon as it's cold, damp and greasy!
Went for uk convenience pack 😊
My 3 test drives in circuit pack were with esc on, as you and most journalists and potential buyers have driven it.
Couldn't feel the 2 lsd's activating. That's because they weren't. Needs esc disabled for that!
Mine is going to be a road daily only, leaving esc ON.
Prefer the standard enkei wheels and grey callipers, will immediately change the average dunlops to ps4s's or better. Goodyear f1 supersport or the latest Bridgestone potenza sport probably!? Waiting for latest Tyre Reviews test. Car due in a couple of months.
Will benefit from a more supple road suspension set up, discreet ambient lighting by inner door handles, rear cross traffic alert and emergency braking, parking sensors front and rear, blind spot monitor to offset the atrocious rear three quarters visibility, hud and uv windscreen, better stereo and speakers and built-in sat nav without an annoying cable attachment and phone flying about.
Circuit pack toyota hype imo 😉.
Yes, if it's a spare toy for racing and you're going to be turning off esc in order to benefit from the 2 lsd's and want to power drift, the circuit pack is beneficial.
Most who buy it and use it only/mainly on the road could have saved 3.5K in the standard car and just changed the tyres!!

I'm not a Civic Type R fanboy at all, I don't drive one, but your conclusion and reasoning why it's better than the Type R is ridiculous. Because it's better in the rain it's a better car than the Civic? Wow. It's AWD, of course it's better suited to drive fast in the rain. And then you mention a Porsche 911 in the discription as if it's a potential rival and you ask yourself whether it's overhyped? Lol

    • @kaliberoh955
      @kaliberoh955 3 года назад +8

Well that's not how i interpret it. I think he was pointing to the fact that some cars are really good but mostly in the sun and they lose traction when it rains while this doesn't. Top gear was driving an Evo vs a Maclaren or Lamborghini and it destroyed it on track. This yaris ia obviously much better than the price suggests so overhyped i dont think. The problem with many cars is that they might be faster in a straight line but they can't keep traction at the same speed as the yaris around a corner.

Seating too high, poor steeing feel, not that quick, gearbox is ok, sat nav screen and mirror placememt is awful but worst of all its disconnected from the road and has a floating feel with no feedback which means i could not put my trust it it or place it where i wanted.
