I love these journals! It’s wonderful that you showed the “imperfect” way you put them together. This makes it more encouraging to those that don’t have the time or talent to do precise measurements, etc. Makes it doable for more people I would think. And what a great way to use up all those papers! And what a great tip on using glue on the frayed end of thread. Why didn’t I ever think of that. 😀
Thank you so much for watching and for your kind comment Debbie - I'm really enjoying these journals at the moment and I like that I leave them 'unfinished' - some pages just not worked on at all. Without glue I doubt I'd ever get a needle threaded! :)
Mitchalisia Hi, What a great idea ! Love your journal ! I made small journals out of Celestial brand tea boxes, & made the signatures with painty papers. One for me & 2 for gift's. I did have to split the spine & make it a little smaller, gluing it back together. The reason for that was because I would of had to make way more signatures. I made 3 signatures of 10, & sewn in that made 20 pages for each signature. It made it the perfect size, otherwise I think if I would of kept the original spine, it would of been way too wide. Turned them into I Am books where you write positive things about yourself in. My teenage niece's enjoyed them, & especially loved that I used the tea box with the tiger on it, & covered the back cover with tiger stripes I painted on painty papers to match. And I added some dangle charms. I kept them closed with an elastic hair band, but after awhile they keep their shape, so the elastic band is optional. I think it's fun to make journals out of unexpected items/ materials. So l always love your unique journals. You've inspired me to make one. It will be my I Love book, & I will write all the things, people, pets I love in it ! Tfs Kylie ! Big Hugs Alisia ! ❤🤗
Thanks so much for your kind comment. The journal you made sound great - and it's a good idea to sometimes make them smaller - I find that when a journal is big and with lots of pages it can be kind of daunting to work in - that's why I often make smaller journals. PS I've been thinking about you recently and the page I will do in Autumn that I didn't get round to doing last year - I've not forgotten about it
@@KylieCooStudio I will look forward to seeing your fall project. I love your art so much ! Do you have a P.O. box where I could send you some happy mail sometime ? I have no idea if you are in the U.S. like me, or somewhere else, I've never asked. You have really great ideas & you truly inspire me ! You're Kylie Cool ! Big Hugs Alisia 🤗🌸🐦
This is exactly the video I have been looking for... how to make a REAL junk journal that’s not measured perfectly, that’s not pretty but very unique!! I love it!!!! THANK YOU
. These are the kind of journals I love to make and I too am embarrassed to share. I'm in meet up groups where people always want to see them and even try them. It always shocks me. I usually just join them with string now in seeing yours I'm going to start sewing them together. Thank you so much for sharing this video. I love your style and you've inspired me to keep dong what I do.
Love this video. It’s the perfect junk journal & I love how rustic it is. I can imagine someone opening an old trunk and finding a journal like this inside that would be a treasure. I’m planning to try making one with what I have in my stash. TFS. Tere
I think it's the rustic and basic construction that really adds to the charm of these. Good to see you. Thank you for sharing. Best wishes for you and your family
Oh, goodness! I just love the look of these journals! It's an actual "junk" journal. And I really like the wonky jute stiching and how you work with your fingers as applicators for the collage on the cover, and the thready bits you added for texture. This journal would be just perfect for my perfectionist side that gets bogged down in details. Wonderful project. Thank you very much for the inspiration!
Thank you so much Dawn - believe it or not I am a perfectionist but I've found that through art and making journals I'm able to fight it (sometimes!) :)
Thanks Laura - I think the way I make them means that they don't feel precious like some journals do when one is scared to start in them in case they get messed up - but they sure feel precious when the pages are completed
I haven't read any other comments, but the torn, "junk", "ugly" pages and the carefree construction are something everyone can relate to, really! Stress, loss, freedom... I intend to make one for when I'm feeling depressed and can't get through it... Thanks for the inspiration Kylie! Happy to see new videos again and to listen to your gentle, soothing voice
Thank you so much for your kind comment Elizabeth - these journals really do provide a place just 'to be in' without any concern for how the page might turn out. I hope that you do make one
Love these Kylie! I've been saving so many scraps and bits this is a great idea for me. I'm looking forward to trying it. Do you have a favorite color? I can't quite tell from looking at your work. I really like the ruggedness of these. They seem more interesting to me, more organic, if you will. You always encourage creativity through intuition. Your new theme suits you! As always thank you for your time and commitment to this student of yours. : )
Thank you so much for your kind comment Cynthia. And yes, organic is a good way to describe these journals both in terms of how they are made but also by way of the pieces I create inside them. I think I'll be doing work in this type of journal for quite some time. I love all colours really - I think sometimes mood and feelings might influence the colours that I use at certain times. There again at other times I'll use a riot of colours - anything and everything might go on the page - yet I also enjoy muted neutral colours. If I had to pick one colour then it would probably be orange especially deep and bright orange. Thanks again :)
Kylie Kylie Kylie... 'Not special'??? This is SO special to me. This is what has been trapped inside of me and you just unleashed it. I will be tearing paper the rest of the weekend. Thank you.
I love the look of these journals. What a great way to use up that scrap paper and make something totally unique! Thanks for sharing your process with us.
This is a fabulous tutorial! Love the journals. I am definitely going to have to try this. My stack of papers waiting to become something are sending their thanks, too! 🐨🙏💌
Thank you so much Bethann - I am so pleased this has helped you. You will find many more journal videos on my channel and many can be found in the Junk Journals Playlist and the No-Sew Journals Playlist. Hope you enjoy making one :)
Listening to you say you were embarrassed about showing us and yet... everyone, including me absolutely adore them! You've started a new trend! Much love pet❤
Love the scrap journal which uniquely binded. They go todo well and natural. I personally love working on scraps lying about The place. Must investigate this. Thanks a lot for the idea and tutorial. I had many junk journals but not this junks. Awesome 👏 👏👏🙏🏼♥️😳😮
Love these!!! I have a stack of scraps that need used up as they are in my way, this is perfect! Thank you so much for the inspiration. Ps: I love your voice, so soothing. I could listen to you for hours.
And once again this video has popped up on my feed. I made one with you when you first did this video. And I'm ready to make yet another one. Love love when you do grunge Kylie.❤
I love this journal idea. The idea that it is not “too precious” to carry about is important. And it is equally important that it IS rustic, imperfect, “crude” (as you put it). I would call it perfectly imperfect. I am one of those who can get hung up on things being straight and perfect and precious, to the point that I either don’t make it at all or when I do get it done I am so intimidated by the perfection that I can’t use it. And what’s the point of a journal you can’t work in or take with you? I took one of my small cardboard covered journals with me on this last vacation and it made the hours in airports and planes very enjoyable, plus me working on a little page became an attraction for other people and so there were many pleasant interactions because of the presence of the journal. That was an effect I did not anticipate. So thanks for being inspiring and encouraging.
Thanks so much Ellie. Believe it or not, when I was away I actually sat in the en-suite bathroom in the middle of the night (so as not to disturb anyone else) just working on pages - just gluing down little bits and pieces - it helped calm me a bit when there was so much going on in my mind that I couldn't sleep. And yes, perfectly imperfect. Thank you :) xo

I really enjoyed this video; Beautiful cover finish...do you plan to do journal writing in these--or mainly art journaling?
Hi Julie - thank you so much for your kind comment. I do a mix of both journaling and art journaling but more of the latter. If I journal then I tend to make it illegible or I cover it up. Glorious use of scraps to make a trashy treasure! But the magic ingredient, as usual, is your unerring artist’s instinct.
You are so kind - thank you :) xo
