first time I heard them I also thought it was a bit sad it wasn't full acapella because of the drums... and I'm glad she also mentioned that too. I understand it is almost impossible for a beatboxer to perform a metal drummer... but... what about 2 beatboxers playing together? I always thought that might be an interesting solution for it :)

Regarding the question, why they decided to use drummer. This is from FAQ on their website:
"Why do you use drums, an a-capella-band usually doesn’t have a drummer?
Well, we tried some guys imitating a double-bassdrum only with their voices, but they all collapsed after 2 minutes of “Lifetime”."
    😂
But anyway, Van Canto is awesome! I like their original songs more than covers. I really love their album Voices of Fire, and it's even accompanied by a fantasy book!

Thanks for featuring this band to react to. I've been waiting quite a while time for someone to provide some solid insights, and I really appreciate it. Each one is a great vocalist on their own and while some can't get get the idea of heavy a capella, I was pretty impressed. I believe the solo was done by plugging a microphone into a mixer before plugging into to a guitar amp and having Stef sing the notes.
I'm hoping this won't be your last reaction to this band, the female vocalist is quite impressive. Their covers of "Wishmaster" or "Fear of the Dark" definitely give their vocalists a bit more time to shine. I did manage to find a decent "Fear of the Dark" rendition live.

Grave Digger is one of those underrated German power metal bands from the 80's. (In my personal opinion at least. I love them, but can see why Chris' voice may not be for everyone.:))
Van Canto is also one of those hidden gems, which I personally didn't discover until just a few years ago. Lots of interesting stuff going on, although they aren't technically all acapella.
All that said, this isn't exactly the best song to showcase the latter of them (though it's one of Grave Digger's most famous). Hope you take some time to check out a few more songs with Van Canto after listening to this one! :)

My mother, who has a degree in musicology, assures me that Van Canto still counts as a capella. A Jamaican steel drum, now, a xylophone or tubular bells, would disqualify them. But not a standard drum kit like they're using here. That's because such instruments aren't pitch-shifting elements, so you can't play a tune on them. You can play rhythms; quite complex rhythms sometimes, but not a _tune._ Thus, you can't accompany singers. You can _back_ them, but not _accompany_ them. Thus, Van Canto, as far as I'm concerned, is one or more backing drummers and five unaccompanied voices. That's plenty a capella for me.

For the pronunciation of Van Canto, imagine how a German would say the name (the band is German, after all), but in this case, the V is still a V [v] sound, not an F [f]. So the pronunciation would turn out as “vahn cahnto.” The current lineup for the band are two lead vocals, high guitar, low guitar, two basses, and drums. In this Rebellion video, the lineup consisted of two lead singers (male and female), high guitar, low guitar, bass, and drums. As a few people have already said, they did try using a beat boxer, but the people they auditioned didn’t have the stamina necessary for metal drumming, which demands a lot more than what beat boxers may normally do in an a cappella group.
I think their song “Lost Forever” is a better representation of the Van Canto sound, but I’m glad you gave them a listen nonetheless. I do recommend reacting to “Lost Forever” as well. They also have a GREAT cover of Metallica’s “Master of Puppets,” but there is no music video nor a good live video (bad sound mixing) for that song. The guys singing the guitar parts add a bit of grit to their sound (one of the band members describes it as a “crunch”) to better mimic the distortion of a guitar. The guy who sings the lower guitar part also sings the guitar solos, and he uses electronic distortion during those solos.
They also have a great cover of “The Final Countdown,” come to think of it. I think you’d really enjoy it.

@@TheCharismaticVoice Yes, Lost Forever would be my recommendation as well. Rebellion is a nice tune and great cover but not representative. As you noticed in the reaction it sounded like it Power Metal coming up but then it wasn't exactly Power Metal. That's because their originals usually are Power Metal but this cover is not. So for full display of their vocal abilities checkout an original. Also, a few years ago their male lead singer quit and the new one has a pretty different voice. Which I just can't get into, unfortunately. So I recommend the older stuff generally, ie. older then the last album. :)

Van Canto, another one of my favorite bands. I first saw them on a Blind Guardian show and for their first song I just didn't notice that there were no instruments on stage other than drums.
There's also a whole Workshop series on their YT channel explaining how they create their sound.
It's 11 years old and they greatly improved since then. One of my favorite songs is "Neuer Wind", the first and so far only song they did in german.

    Rebellion (Grave Digger cover)
The clans are marching 'gainst the law
Bagpipers play the tunes of war
Death or glory I will find
    Rebellion on my mind
The clans are marching 'gainst the law
Bagpipers play the tunes of war
Death or glory I will find
    Rebellion on my mind
    Rumours know
    that rebellion will break out
Bonnie Prince Charles is in the highlands
to claim his crown no doubt
He raised his Standard at Glenfinnen
    calling to our pride
    The Jacobites are gathering
    I'll be at their side
    Armed and ready stand
    My rights I must defend
    Steel is in my hand
The clans are marching 'gainst the law
Bagpipers play the tunes of war
Death or glory I will find
    Rebellion on my mind
    The town of Edinburgh
    fell soon in our hands
    Defeated the English
    at the Battle of Prestopans
    Armed and ready stand
    My rights I must defend
    Steel is in my hand
The clans are marching 'gainst the law
Bagpipers play the tunes of war
Death or glory I will find
    Rebellion on my mind
The clans are marching 'gainst the law

A couple of comments and maybe to answer some of your questions:
    1. As some already pointed out, when Van Canto started as a project they tried beatboxing. One of the more humorous explanation they gave for using a drumset instead was that "you need the lung volume of a sperm whale to beat box the double base drum of a fast metal song" (free translation from german)
    2. For the "solo guitar" performed here by Stefan Schmidt he stays actually mostly in his headvoice and they use guitar amplifiers and effect boards. He explains that here: ruclips.net/video/UED4B5JnJno/видео.html This is part of a longer series where Stefan explains how they create their sound. But take everything there with a pinch of salt since this is only representative for the early Van Canto albums - they learned and changed a lot over the years.
    3. Concerning behind the scenes studio footage - we got you covered here: ruclips.net/video/XX6JMY_E3aw/видео.html It is a humorous compilation of footage from the recording of their second album where you can see (and here) them sing in isolation. Also Hansi Kürsch from Blind Guardian has a cameo there while recording his line for the song "take to the sky".
    4. Concerning the high screams by Sly (male lead vocals) that Mark seem to like a lot: Just from the top of my mind I think he uses them more as highlights and to emphazise, so I can not think of a particular song where he does that a lot. I would have to think about that.
    5. A closing fun fact for you: The only "non-singer" of the band is the drummer Bastian Emig. But actually he is the lead singer for his other band InLegend. Several of the members are actually also singers in other bands/projects. Stefan Schmidt (who does most of the arangements for Van Canto and is kind of the brains of this whole crazy idea) for example has a project called HEAVATAR where he does more "traditional" powermetal lead vocals - and he is awesome at that too.
I hope that was interesting and/or helpfull to someone. I will not even try to recomend specific songs now without thinking about it. It would anyways depend a little bit on what you would be most curouis about concerning them.
