The Rolex 16808 is a yellow gold Submariner released in the late 1970s/early 1980s. It replaced the first gold Submariner, ref. 1680, and is considered by many to be a transitional Rolex because it introduced the collection to many significant upgrades while maintaining many aspects of its 4-digit predecessor.
With the ref. 16808, Rolex introduced the Submariner to a more durable scratch-resistant sapphire crystal instead of acrylic, which is inherently more “vintage” than sapphire. The ref. 16808 also received an upgrade to the Triplock screw-down crown, named after the three different waterproof sealed zones for the crown. With the Triplock crown, the Submariner went from touting a 200-meter depth rating to the modern standard of 300 meters. It also replaced the bi-directional bezel on the 4-digit gold model with a safer uni-directional diver’s bezel. Lastly, the caliber 1575 powering the ref. 1680 was discontinued and replaced in ref. 16808 with the higher-beat caliber 3035 with a Quickset date.
Interestingly, the caliber 3035 was the first Rolex time-and-date movement to feature a Quickset for the date, a mechanism that allows the wearer to adjust the date with a quick twist of the crown instead of advancing the hour hand a full 24 hours.
Rolex would eventually discontinue the transitional ref. 16808 in favor of ref. 16618, which replaced the caliber 3035 with the caliber 3135 with an overcoil Breguet balance spring.
SERTI DIAL
Gold Rolex 16808 was also among the few models in the Crown’s cannon to sport the lavish Serti dial, a type of watch face decorated with diamond and gemstone hour markers. It earns its name “Serti,” after the French “sertir,” meaning to set gems into jewelry.
This model's hour markers are decorated with brilliant-cut diamonds, a trapezoidal sapphire at 12 o’clock, and baguette-cut sapphires at 6 and 9 o’clock. Each gem is carefully hand-set into yellow gold surrounds by an expert Rolex gemologist. The blue sapphire gems perfectly match the blue aluminum bezel, giving this Submariner a very nautical and luxurious aesthetic without appearing too flashy or over-the-top.
Rolex also produced this famous gold Submariner with vintage nipple-style hour markers, like its predecessor, ref. 1680, and traditional flat hour markers filled with luminescent material.

Wearing my GMT Master II, Coke dial today. I looked up the GMT Master Serti and have to agree that this gold Submariner Serti has the better color combo. I'm generally not a fan of Serti dials, but this one is subtle without being too blingy. A gold sub with a green bezel, Serti dial in champagne with emerald hour markers at 6, 9, and 12 (with diamonds at the other hour markers) would be awesome.
