My friends have a Great Pyrenees that over the years has learned that the cats are not allowed outside. So when he sees a cat, either his own or the neighbours', he gentle picks it up and carries into the house. None of the cats fight him anymore and just stay still and enjoy the ride.

My childhood Great Pyrenees, Obie, died a few weeks ago at the great age of 12. He was the best possible dog to have grown up with - loving, fiercely loyal and protective of me and my siblings, and all around the sweetest soul. Incredibly intelligent, and in his younger years incredibly naughty. He flunked out of his beginner obedience class, counter surfed constantly, and once did $50,000 worth of damage to the house when he'd unintentionally been left alone during a thunderstorm (turned on all of the bathtub faucets and flooded the house, knocked the top of the toilets off and shattered both them and the tiles below, even got into the attic and punched 2 holes through the kitchen ceiling). My dad ended up buying a large property a few years back so Obie enjoyed his golden years roaming the land, barking at birds, and basking in the sun. He's buried in the front yard where he used to stand and bark at the mail truck when it came in (his favorite past time). I was able to be there with him the day he died and spent hours talking to him with his giant head on my lap. You don't see Pyrenees often, and this video was so comforting to watch - he looked so much like this when he was younger. Bright white, all fluff, a little gangly. What a beautiful pup.

My ex had a Great Pyrenees/Labrador that they got when she was a puppy for Easter, which is what she was named. Easter was one of the best dogs I have ever had, she was extreamly intelligent, and had a easy going personality. We lived in a rural area but close enough to have a lot of traffic, when she went out to visit her friends she was very cautious and when she crossed the road she would look both ways before she did. She was the proud protector of her 4 human kiddos for 17 years. I miss her dearly.

That's unfortunate. AKC puts Great Pyrs in the working dog group. Humans should not get this dog unless they can provide the dog with a routine regular mentally challenging job.

    • @julessevenky8316
      @julessevenky8316 2 года назад +7

Lol... what's "unfortunate"? Pyrs' job is to Guard, and ours is perfectly happy to sleep on the living room floor all day with one ear open for something to bark at. Humans should get this dog ONLY if they first research and determine if the breed characteristics suit their way of life. They can make the most amazing pets IF you work *with* the breed's characteristics and don't expect to train them out of the dog.

As someone with a Great Pyrenees of my own, this was a real treat to watch. Beowulf is such a sweetie, but he's also very protective, and his coat is beautiful. A tip though, while Pyrenees are very independent, their coats are quite high maintenance, and they can become VERY floofy. So be prepared for some major brushing sessions if you ever adopt one. They also can overheat easily, but conversely do very well in colder climates. And I can personally testify that even if they have a mellow personality, they can sometime be VERY big barkers.

We live in the mountains, and our neighbors directly behind us have a Great Pyrenees. He barks when he sees me in my backyard, or when people walk by on the road next to our houses, but it's always the "hey, someone's here!" kind of bark. One morning, I heard him barking HYSTERICALLY and thought to myself, "That's weird. I wonder what's up with him?" My husband checked our trail camera later that day, and at the exact time our neighbor's dog was losing his mind, a black bear had been walking through our backyard. I'd been right where the bear was walking not 10 minutes earlier! Ever since then, I always listen for that hysterical bark before I go outside!

I live in a farming community and we have a lot of GPs in the area. Sadly, we have a lot that end up in shelters. They're sometimes owner turn ins, but more often than not, they are picked up by animal control and no owner ever comes to claim them because they are tired of having a dog that constantly wants to roam. We have had several in the area that took months for volunteers and/or animal control to catch, one even took over a year, though I am sure poor socialization caused it to be harder to catch them. Of course, food and shelter was being provided the entire time and we don't get much of a winter here.
While they are typically mellow and usually pretty friendly, they tend to want to roam if not given enough stimulation, especially in their youth. We have an agricultural center with various herds of animals not too far from my house and several of the local GPs have wandered into the areas the animals are being kept and just "hang out" with them. They especially love the sheep. Driving past I would iften see 1 or 2 GPs in the fields. It wasn't until a few years ago that I learned that the center didn't have dogs!
On the other hand, a family in the area had a GP that would sit or lay at the end of their drive way everyday until family got back home. He didn't leave the area. If they closed the fence, he'd find a way to get out and stay at the end of the driveway. When I first moved here, I panicked when I drove past this house because I thought the dog had been hit by a car and was dead or drying on the side of the road. Nope, he was just napping.
It is important to know what traits this breed is prone to having. I wouldn't consider this a dog that one can just have around the house with little more than to ensure a good walk once a day. This is a good read about them: coloradogreatpyreneesrescue.blogspot.com/2011/11/before-you-adopt-great-pyrenees.html.

Depends on the dog. I had one myself, living in an appartment without garden. Of course I walked her 2 to 3 hours a day on a long walk and 3 times a day on a short walk. That was enough for her. She was a rescue, I didnt know about her history. She seldom barked. I was her herd, she protected me, and the cats of my friend.
She came from Spain, maybe she was given away, because she was not estimated to be good enough to guard sheep. She hated loud noises. But she loved other dogs, cats and children.

I own a great Pyrenees mix and he is my heart dog. So mellow and smart! He will be 8 this year. He's a wonderful guard dog but he rarely barks. I would love to get another Pyrenees someday. Such a wonderful breed.

1:41 the way she smiles into the camera, you can feel the happiness she feels from her job and the pets she can spend time with

It's amazing to think about the wonderfully interesting life this old girl has lived, and knowing that now she can just retire and live the rest of her life in comfort is so wholesome.

My brother rescued a Pyrenees from a hording situation. When he came into their home, he was 40 lbs under weight with rashes, cuts, bruises, and scars all over his body. He was extremely skittish however he was a sweetheart to my 8 year old nephew. Now he loves to roll around outside, is excited whenever I come over, has a beautiful full coat, and he is at the weight he should be. If you think his large bear-like appearance means he had an intimidating bark, he would surely disappoint you as he sounds like a teenager finally going through puberty. My brother's old mutt who was half the size of him had a more intimating bark

As soon as you said courage, I started laughing. Koda is brave enough to defend his home, but will get spooked by hamsters, stairs, cats, etc

hahahaha it's always the silliest things! Ours runs and hides if anything boils or sizzles while I'm cooking. But if she felt we were in trouble she'd take on the world to protect us!

I have a great pyrenees, most mellow dog I have ever had, including an akita mix. He lays around inside for about 20 hours a day; on days I work doubles I can leave him alone from 5 am to 9 pm with the knowledge that he isn't stressing over my absence, just snoozing away. The last four hours a day? He is outside in the middle of the night, intent on guarding the house!

I had a Pyrenees/Border Collie mix when I was growing up, and when he stood against the fence, he looked like a full grown man. He was the best dog, even if he was afraid of bugs, and I miss him. I called him Big Big Boy.
Great video as always. Thanks for sharing!

I love it when these dogs come into work. I always have to check for grass seeds when brushing them though because a lot of farmers use them as guardians.
