The screensavers are probably the worst part of the kindle for me, I realise a lot of them are pencil or pens but honestly, the black and white, close up photography makes it look like bullets. I wish they’d picked photos that are better suited to black and white.

I'm currently using a Kindle Keyboard (K3). There is a popular hack that I have installed that does just that.
It seems to me like there is very little progress generation on generation for e-ink readers. The only real upgrade over the first gen seems to be the warmth of the light and the waterproofing (the latter of which came at the cost of the awesome charging cover), which makes this one of the few tech gadgets that is a worthwhile investment that won't become obsolete in a year.
Great review but if I may offer some input. It would have been very informative for me to see how big the oasis is in your hand. Just seeing it on display like that makes it look huge.

Can you use the experimental web browser on any website on Oasis? That is why I bought the Kindle 3G keyboard- it was worth a lot to me coz of that. Nowadays I just use a PC + hit the public library services instead. Better for books, magazines and video.

A fantastic idea for the slippery kindle oasis. Just stick strips of clear Sellotape on the back. It looks nice too and easy to peel off too
Thank you for the review. I have a Oasis but not the latest 2020 version. It seems like the warmer light is the main difference between what I have and the new model. That is not enough of a difference to make me switch. One of the key features that no review seems to mention is the ability to cut off the touch screen and just use the buttons to flip pages. I find this feature alone almost worth the price. My other kindles like the paper white etc. used to sometimes jump multiple pages when using the touch screen. It happened often enough to be irritating. Also using this option not to use touch screen you can use your fingers to speed read. Also the Oasis is lighter. When reading for a long time you can notice a difference.

I bought a 32Gb Oasis so I could listen to my audiobooks, I go to sleep listening to the books. Imagine my surprise when I find out the top of the range model does NOT feature a sleep timer.
Amazon appear to show little interest in doing anything about that. I could have saved myself a substantial sum by NOT buying the 32Gb model.
The reading dynamics are superb, I just feel badly let down by the fact Amazon do NOT tell anyone of this lack.

My thoughts exactly. Who buys these for audio books. Completely irrelevant almost. It is for the reading experience and the paper-like look. Personally I don't do audio books. May try it some day if I am really bored but I just can't imagine someone else reading my book for me. Seems....odd
The immersive mode of audiobook can only be accessed from the app version on iPhone/iPad/android, anyway.
It just feels more natural to buy a kindle.

Really? Perhaps your phone is charging, or low on battery. Maybe you need to conserve battery on your phone. Maybe you don't have a mobile phone? etc etc

Considering the price of an Oasis I highly doubt that, unless the phone is not around you.
As much as I get this, I also get why they have the feature on there with it been so expensive.
What I don't get is why I don't have the option to not have audiobooks on there if I do wish, as they sync over automatically if you have both the book and the audio book version cluttering up my otherwise OCD organised library.
I personally only use my phone for audio books as I always have it on me anyway and it's smaller so saves carrying a secondary device, and the Kindle for relaxing at home or holiday so I have no use for the additional files.

IF it supports connection to websites without wifi, it's worth it for me. However, I can't find out if they've restored that feature, as we used to have on the Kindle Keyboard 3G.

@Year 2020 A thing with USB C is not just faster charging but prolonged lifetime of the plug, as well as plugging in with whatever side of the plug. Added to the fact that it's expensive and lot of phones and even game consoles today are switching to C.

I bought the kindle oasis in replacement of my paperwhite.
My paperwhite had a habit of running out of battery even when I’m not using it at all, and it keeps restarting by itself. Also, i had a hard time turning the pages... i would repeatedly touch the screen for it to go to the next page.
Now i love my Oasis!!

Like the big screen, but I don't like the odd shape or the physical buttons. That side with the buttons bezel is stupid huge. I hope the next version goes back to proportionate bezels and no buttons.
Oh yeah. Despite the luck luster battery compared to Paperwhite 4, Oasis commands the best reading experience. Ever.

Yes but you have to connect your amazon to the Libby app on your phone and then borrow a book

I bought my first kindle about 9 years, or maybe more, as soon as Amazon started shipping to Australia. I loved the text to speech and was disappointed when I upgraded to a paperwhite and found that it didn’t have this function. It also gave one the choice of male or female voice, so I wonder why they stopped putting this function on any kindle. I now have three kindles, don’t know why I bought them when one can only use one at a time, silly me. But I can’t decide if I should upgrade to an Oasis. I don’t need to have waterproof or ‘safe in the sun’. I’m too old to go to the beach etc. I have chronic arthritis plus medication side effects and can’t hold a book, and I love books, so I am grateful for all my devices, don’t you love technology? Plus if the cost of a new kindle is out of my price range, that would decide what I do. Anyway...I love my kindles!

I have two kindles..the original kindle which I bought in 2012 and the kindle paper white .I use only the latter,now three years old and its one of most favourite devices.
My biggest frustration with the Paperwhite is the poor photograph & illustration quality. I find myself using the kindle app on my iPad to see these properly. Is there a kindle model that provides good quality photos & graphic quality?

Sheena Frederick the oasis has multiple models, the price that you listed would go down about 100 dollars depending on the features you get. If you get 8 gb without lte data, it costs 100 dollars less.

The screen has 16 shades of grey, so no colour. You can't freely write on the books with some kind of pen, but you can highlight a word or a block of text and you can add a note via an on-screen keyboard, whick leaves a note symbol on the text next to the word. All highlights and notes will be easily accessed and are all organised in one place and you also have the option to export them.
Hi. Kindle products use an e-ink which simulates how a printed page looks, as such, it is in shades of black and gray, not color. I too, would love to use my kindle for studying, but it isn't a good solution. My recommendation, solely for studying, and not for recreational or casual reading, is to buy a cheap tablet and install Amazon's kindle app on it. You can then have full color resolution and touch screen features, including whatever write-on screen software the tablet has. If you use a stylus, it becomes fairly easy to highlight and leave notes in the book you are reading. I have an old kindle paperwhite, so old, it doesn't even have any of the features the basic kindle paperwhites on the market have now. I'm going to upgrade to an oasis, for recreational/casual reading. I'm a big reader, so it is worth the investment for me. For studying I use a samsung touchscreen chromebook. It's a little pricey, at around $500, but with it, I can use the kindle app and do all of the things I described above, along with using the internet in a browser easily, for everything convenient online. In my opinion, the touchscreen chromebook is more powerful, if less universal, than your average tablet. I hope that helps.
I’m geting myself my first kindle Kindle Oasis Essentials Bundle includes Kindle Oasis 7" E-reader (32 GB, Gold), Amazon Leather Cover (Merlot), and Amazon 9W Power Adaptor, it’s tody £258 but can I use it even in places that don’t have singles like can I use it offline? And can I download ebooks from z-library even i share my Amazon prime membership with my parent? If I download ebooks successfully would I get into trouble with Amazon’s causeing the account and member to shut down? Can I use audible alone with my kindle prime membership?

I've been using my Kobo Libra 2, which has such a great reading experience, but it has no easy way to get your notes or highlights off it.
Does anyone know whether the 10th generation Oasis Kindle lacks the internal magnetic that the 9th generation case has to Wake/Shut-Off the device?? I noticed my 9th generation case with magnetic cover does not hold the 10th generation at all AND the Wake/Shut-Off feature doesn’t not work. Just wanted to ensure the 10th generation I received is not a defect. Thanks.
The magnets are placed differently in the oasis 3 to previous models so cases for those models wouldn't work with it

I need to pay most of my debt so I can get this Kindle.. I'm a book nerd, reading is my passion. So it would be awesome if I could invest in this.
A used 6th or 7th Gen Paperwhite is just enough, believe me. I got a 6th Gen Paperwhite off of eBay for 40$ and it's flawless, not a single scratch on it, it even came with a case. Holds thousands of books, screen is very clear and crisp, and it was cheap as chips. Why buy a new e-reader, when there are so many on the used market that are barely used because the reality is that most people don't read that much, and they eventually sell their devices for very cheap because they simply did not use them.

They have text to voice called VoiceView. You can both read and listen with the Voice view. You can't read and listen to an audiobook, so no interactive reading. I use the voiceview a lot and it works. It is a little difficult to use, though.
Does anyone know if the kindle has the option to use a black screen (with white fonts of course)? The option is available on the Android version of the Kindle. It makes night time (or dark) reading non-intrusive to others, such as at home, or during a long haul flight.

I just got mine this week and I was a bit disappointed. It is too big for my small hands to hold with ease (I had the Oasis 1 before, but the batterie gave out), and the edges are pretty sharp. I‘ve ordered a cover now, hope that it helps.

That was innovative because you could get off the plane and hit (at the time) Yahoo Messenger by web site, message your friends and let them know you had arrived without having to stop in the damned airport to buy a new SIM for your stupid-smart phone. It worked in Japan, Hong Kong, Philippines, Finland... any country I traveled to.
Hopefully, decades from now we'll have an experience as useful as this on the hinternet again!

It is all based on which website you are registered. If you register to the Amazon USA you have access to audible.

Kindles use an e-ink display which looks like paper meaning that you can read in the sun without glare exactly like paper and honestly when i read for a long time on my phone i get a headache and kindles dont do that so ebook readers are great and a must have for anyone who reads a large volume of books without wanting to carry them on hand. You dont have to get the oasis the base model is more than good enough for any reading it its like 60 bucks

I started with e readers on 2014 with Kindle basic the Kindle touch which I still own and like. I didn't find any cause to update all this year's. I might have think to upgrade to the 2nd paperwhite but stii I find it small. When the oasis first released I thought of it but still 7 inch and reads only Amazon ebook formates. So I looked for readers that can handle ebub that is when I stumbled apon onyx nova pro. It is amazing really the big screen, drag and drop functionality and can handle epub, Moby, azw3, PDF, chm... etc
I want a 7 or 8 inch e-reader with no bezel please.

A MASSIVE FAIL, the top of the range Kindle Oasis (32 Gb) doesn't even have a sleep timer. I only bought the 32 version so I could go to sleep listening to my audiobooks on a bluetooth ear bud. Guess what? No timer so it plays and plays totally wasting the battery for no good purpose.
Does it say ANYWHERE in the advertising or reviews - THERE IS NO TIMER? Well I've not seen it in writing or on any review.
So be aware.
That fact that it doesn't mention that is has a timer should be enough to tell you that it is not a feature.
