I think I like the physical buttons too, but I really dislike the overall design. It is pretty awkward to hold, slippery with a narrow grip. That said I think I think the design direction is better than the touch, but still needs improvement.

I got the latest Paperwhite last week as a birthday present. Compared to my previous Kindle (the discontinued Voyage) it’s a bit bigger and heavier. I read in bed and I find the Paperwhite ever so slightly too big (and I have pretty big hands). I miss the page turn buttons, but not that much, since they were hit and miss at best. The new lighting system is a deal breaker for me: the warm light is SO MUCH BETTER at night. So even if size-wise, the Voyage was better, the reading experience on the Paperwhite definitely gets the upper hand. Also, it looks like Amazon stopped updating the Voyage (15.4 is at the time of writing still not available), so I guess out with the old, in with the new.

Great review. I was given the oasis as a gift several weeks ago and I truly do love it. I have a 10th generation paperwhite that I thought was great but the oasis straddles over the top of that old fence and really steps into a more refined and enjoyable experience.
The real beauty of the oasis screen for me was discovered when I used it to read under an incandescent light source. The font was truly razor sharp and indistinguishable from an actual paper page.

I just upgraded to an Oasis 8GB during Prime Days (got a bundle with cover and charger brick). I had been using a 2014 Paperwhite, which was getting very slow and glitchy- I couldn't wait for any longer to replace it. So far I love the Oasis' larger display, warm lighting, case design, and best of all, the page turn buttons! I've been reading on a Kindle since the early days of the white keyboard model, so I loved those physical buttons. Set up was really easy using the Kindle app on my phone and I was happily reading in minutes.

The only thing that bothers me about the paperwhite is that it does not have physical buttons to turn the page. I have had the keyboard 3 for more than 10 years, which even has a keyboard. It is not tactile. But I find the buttons to turn the page comfortable. Do you get used to turning the page with the touch? I wanted to buy the Oasis but I didn't want to buy it and next month they will announce the release of a new edition...

I've been using the Kindle Oasis since March and the Paperwhite 4 for the previous couple of years prior to that. I take long motorcycle trips, road trips, whatever I want. The Oasis' battery is not something I have to worry about. I can get through a few novels or more on a charge and not be concerned. I don't even turn off the backlight anymore, I just keep it on at level 11, with the warmth at 13 and I don't notice it being on while in direct light. The premium feel and large screen with small bezels made it a fantastic device and I highly recommend it to anyone. Then again, you can't go wrong with a Kindle period.

@@lizzielein777 Interesting! I checked it out and still, I see that Manga version seems to only be black and white. I was thinking like a soft color version to view manga that is not black and white. That said, I agree with your point. The Anime/Manga market has hit the western market really well, but it's economic centre will be in Asia so I don't know how good the sales will be. That said, Amazon could keep a smaller quantity in its amazon shops rather than giving them out to retailers so that it can still hit the more niche western market. Who knows though, thanks for the comment!

I have a feeling you were paid for expressing a positive opinion.
How can you not see it?
4:55 A very important thing that you didn't mention, and on the basis of which I can say that the designer or originator of the light sensor was/is a moron, ignorant, and I'm even more irritated by the fact of paying people for such a fucked up job. As far as I know (or maybe I'm an idiot) in sunny weather the phone screen is poorly visible, the sensor turns up the lighting to the maximum to improve visibility - understandable. However, the ereader screen works completely differently, it is clearly visible in full lighting. When we move to a dark room, the sensor should work and brighten the reader so that we can read (unlike the phone where the sensor reduces the light intensity). Logical, but not for everyone. I can be an idiot, a moron or whatever. I'll take it on board. I bought the 32gb version because I don't like being restricted. The light sensor is such a forced addition, but if there is something, I require it to work sensibly, as intended. I understand that if I go out with the reader into the yard, it still needs to light up because it can't be seen on this type of screen?

  • @Gary_M

It will only let me turn page on the right side. So if I am holding lefthanded my thumb can't really reach over there. With either hand, I often end up hitting the screen in not just the right way, making it go backwards or bring up a menu. This happens fairly often and I've been using it close to two years. My Kindle Oasis is 3 years old now and the battery is terrible, it requires a daily charge just to read for between 1-3 hours a night. My wife's Paperwhite is more than double that age I estimate and it has no battery issues at all. Plus the Paperwhites battery is fairly easy to replace from what I've seen, the Oasis is impossible to replace the battery without breaking the screen.
I'll be buying a Paperwhite soon, I'll miss my Oasis physically (I much prefer the chassis design vs the Paperwhite) but being unrepairable is a huge negative for me. However the Oasis screen had a lot of ghosting, like screen burn in, and the contrast didn't seem as good as the Paperwhite. The blacks on the Paperwhite looked darker while the Oasis screen looked washed out. They had them in some sort of demo mode so I couldn't play with brightness settings and the store lighting was very bright. Still not sure which to get.

I have an old Paperwhite (6. Generation) and I‘m still quite content with it. Battery life’s still great. Its 4GB storage is enough for me (if I ever come close to filling it, I could always delete read books from the storage as they stay in my Amazon account anyway). The only thing missing for me is the dark mode since my eyes are quite sensitive. But that‘s not worth spending the money for a new one. Sure the display and functionality is not up to the latest state of tech, but I don‘t mind. I think it‘s still quite nice to read on.
If the device will ever give up on me, I think I would update to the current Paperwhite signature edition.

Page turning buttons is great.. or the Signature with wireless charging.. decisions decisions. Honestly if Amazon made their larger magazine sized version again I would get that. now that I'm older and starting to need glasses, fonts running larger I have to turn pages constantly or wear readers.. I would prefer the larger long discontinued format. which will I get? Oasis or Signature? Not sure.. oh and I think AT&T turned off 3g this year so the free cellular connectivity is gone in this part of US. Not sure what Oasis uses/used.

However, tou keep repeating the same error: in sunlight or even in strong sunlight an eink front light is completely useless and redundant. It's the opoosite of an LCD or OLED screen. It mimics the experience of paper. Low light, use the front light. Well lit environment, switch off the front light.

  • @lleifette
    @lleifette 2 года назад

I think I’m on my 5th Kindle. Once again I’ve started experiencing power issues and am reading books on my phone. I had the original Oasis but found that it never accessed the extra battery, and ran out of power too fast, and the new WiFi prevented connecting by cellular- if it detected a WiFi signal, i could not use the cellular connection. Since I did not have permission to connect to the detected WiFi, this was a problem and I found myself trying to find parking lots with no WiFi so I could download books. I replaced the oasis with a paper white, and for the first time did not pay for the cellular feature. I use it with my phone hotspot when I need to. Since my paper white no longer reliably turns on or reboots with a full charge, I’ve been reading on my smart phone. Besides not being able to purchase books directly to an Apple device, now I’m struggling with reader highlights. There is no way to remove the highlights. When every word on screen is highlighted, it is really difficult to turn the page. They have removed page scrolling from the other device app, and the highlights extend into the right margins. Not my highlights, don’t know why everyone else made the highlights, no way to clear them to get them out of the way. The last bitch I have is that the paper white is also missing the rotation feature, manual or auto. Really annoying if I’m trying to read and charge at the same time. I used to just rotate the device so the cord came out of the top and was out of the way. I think their battery tests are bogus and don’t reflect actual use. Sorry to dump on you, but there is no real customer feedback possible.
