I think anyone who is rude about wanting to look good in your mobility aid is silly. It's not just vapid, it's clearly a huge purchase, why would you spend that money on something you don't love? Practical things can be pretty too!

@@jessicaoutofthecloset Also: look at car adverts, and how much attention they give to how attractive a car is … and people are not spending their whole day in the car in public. If the style of a car is seen as a valid consideration when deciding which one to buy, that should go double or triple for wheelchair users.
Also, I was thinking maybe some custom upholstery slip covers for the back and seat of the chair? So you could have a couple options to match with outfits?

I’m having some health issues with my joints, but we had a family trip planned for New York City. This ruclips.net/user/postUgkxuxJwamLFanm476LC5WPeTouyyU1GXomC was perfect! It’s lightweight enough that my friend could carry it up or down stairs when we needed to. (I can walk very short distances) It was comfortable for me to sit in, I would say if you’re super tall it might be a little cramped. I’m 5’1” and the foot rests were the perfect height. This may not be the best one for long term use, you get what you pay for, but for something that fits our budget that gives me accessibility while we deal with my health this was amazing.

Hi Jessica, I love your channel. My 14 year old daughter came out last year and I have a chronic illness which has limited my mobility. We have been watching your videos together for about a year. A few weeks ago I lost my ability to walk so I have been in a manual wheelchair but I have been approved of a powerchair/mobility scooter. Your series came at the perfect time. I have been searching for exactly what you ordered so I was hoping you could send me the information about the make and model. Unfortunately it will be a little while to get one. We currently live in a home that has stairs everywhere so I can't get around. We are about to put the house up for sale so we can get a bungalow, once we move I can order my powerchair once the ramp is put it.The hoops we have to jump through for funding. I live near Toronto, Canada and winter has come early, we already have 15-20 cm of snow. I hate the thought of moving in winter. I love the thought of the main floor master bedroom with a walk in shower, plus I get new furniture. Sorry I'm rambling today, I'm quite foggy. Thank you for all you do, it's been empowering seeing someone that also has a chronic illness, mobility issues, hearing issues and memory loss.

      Hi Jessica!
Yes, I am enjoying the series. I only have a transport wheelchair and ...yeah...we won't get in to that. I am so glad that you found a chair to work for you! :)
You are making me laugh about the other medical aids that you use; such as your crutches and wrist thingee. Before you have said that we should not worry about how they look. Why the heck not? ! Fancy duct tape on the crutches! A nice set of cloth covers for the wrist splints! You need these things!
You should check out the RUclips channel #squirmyandgrubs. They are a young interabled couple in Minnesota. Shane has Spinal Muscular Atrophy, which is a form of Muscular Dystrophy. He has been in a power chair since, I think, Kindergarten? He is an author of three books so far; one for kids. They travel giving presentations at schools and other places. Yes, I am being vague! :) Brain fog! Amazed I lasted this long. They are so freaking funny!
I am so glad that it is Autumn so you are in your "proper" lol colors for your hair and skin type. Of course, you look gorgeous in anything, but I am particularly fond of you in the darker colors.
      Much love!

Great choice! Fortunately, the website says that the fabric on the back snaps off so you could absolutely get it reupholstered in whatever beautiful fabric you would like! Might even be able to do the same with the seat cushion. I sewed a new back for my scooter and it is made a huge difference! I even added extra padding and a pocket on the back. Wish I was in the UK so I could get you kitted out as well. Luckily, it's not a super difficult sewing job so it probably wouldn't be too hard to get someone to help you out!

Such a great looking chair!!! I know I know...I hear you all saying "She doesn’t know Jessica at all if that is her version of pretty chair🙄"! Hear me out peeps; before I had to stop, I worked for a specialist group of MD’s practicing PM & R (Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation plus Rheumatology). This meant I worked w/patients that ranged from: total quadriplegia who used Tongue-Drive chairs, to patients at the opposite of the spectrum, those who walked most of the time, yet used a chair on an "as needed basis". I also worked directly with equipment distributers, b/c in the US (at least in our office), the MD would specify what type of chair the patient needed, & we nurses contacted the company that was the best fit. After that, the wheelchair company took over, they even obtained insurance approval & did the paperwork! Anyway, what I mean by saying it "looks great", I mean that it will be extremely easy to customize! We had a quite a few patients who used chairs like these, & some were decked out! One young lady had tassels on her grips, all of the black areas were painted pink & the company even used "crystals" to spell out her name on one side! Her genius mother went to IKEA, bought an inexpensive faux fur rug, cut it to match the seat & back then simply used velcro (some say hook & loop I believe) to attach it! It’s downfall was that it didn’t have a basket, but the magic of determined nurses, & a front office staff with hearts of gold corrected that.1 pink bicycle basket later, with ribbons & bows at each side, hot glue, beads & clear zip ties, we managed to surprise her at a follow up appt.! We chose the best place for her to easily reach it, secured it with the zip ties, & then stuffed it full of magazines, bottles of water & soda, plus snacks & a gift card b/c the whole office knew her & wanted to pitch in. So to me...yeah, that’s a great looking chair b/c it does pretty much every Jessica asked for, & I’ve seen the potential that they have to look quite lovely! Just be sure to find out how much you can do to it w/o voiding the warranty (if it has one)! I know you, Claudia & Clara can come up with a perfect design, whether you send it out to be done, or you DIY it. I’m so happy you found something thanks to a wonderful subscriber! Can’t wait to see what you think of it! Sending all the usuals 🤗💜🦋😘🐾🐾

Ive realized shes happier when we refer to it as Chris or him/he rather then it. I thought maybe it made it seem less like a "thing" to deal with and be burdened with lugging in and out of the car. Maybe if you found a cute backpack that could work for you and your awesome new chair too?

Emotional well being should never be overlooked. Feeling confident in one's mobility aid is essential to overcoming any preconceived notions or irrational stigmas put forth, quite unnecessarily, in society. Be who you are, feel who you are, live as you want. Comfortability, functionality, efficiency, and personality ... all reasonable in finding the right mobility aid for one's self.
Enjoying the series, Jessica. Thank you so much. And congratulations on 600K subscribers. Yay!!! Go ahead and treat yourself. You've earned it! Take care. Lovely as always 👍🤟💝

Hi Jessica, I am a new subbie of about 3 weeks. I am so delighted to find you. I love your YT videos and I have become a firm follower. I am a gay female, 69 years old, very disabled, have a partner of 33 years, who has her own serious health issues, and I bought an electric wheelchair very like yours and have never regretted it. Although it folds up in the same way it is still too heavy for me or my partner to lift.
I have no mobility at all due to horrendous pain from an inoperable bulging disc at L5 and S1 that is constantly touching my sciatic nerve. I have had ME and Fibromyalgia for 31 years too so life hasn't been particularly good. We now have a car with a hoist in the back to lift my folded wheelchair in to the back of our Nissan Pulsar. In the past we have had a Kangoo car with a ramp in the back which I could drive and I could drive my wheelchair in to the back. We went from that to a VW Caddy WAV with ramp but my condition deteriorated and I found the Caddy too high to get in to without a lot of pain. So we tried the hoist and the Nissan combination.
Unfortunately a short while after that purchase my partner had a bad time and developed heart failure and whilst scanning her chest they found her breast cancer from 11 years ago had returned in her spine. Following many admissions to hospital she is now much weaker than when we bought the Nissan and hoist. So we are going for a mobility car with an innovative ramp that my partner can lift up and down. Last year I was called in to apply for PIP from DLA which I was already on. We were both very relieved when I got higher rate mobility for 10 years along with middle rate for personal care. In 10 years I will be 79 if I live that long so we decided to go with Motability and a Citroen Berlingo WAV with the innovative ramp and five seats. The long seats in the back will be handy if we are anywhere and I need to lie down. Cons of this is, due to the lockdown, Citroen decided it needed money fast and sold the cars that the WAV conversion company had ordered, including my car! 😭. I tried the Ford Connect on Tuesday but that car is far too high for me to get in to. It's higher than the VWCaddy was. So I said I will wait for the Berlingo which they had reordered. It will take about 5 months in all to get it which will be December-ish. Too late for any trips to the country this summer. I just hope my partner is still well enough to come for trips out in the spring. Still, I love my instantly folding electric wheelchair that is a lot like yours. I bought it from a company in England who import them. Mine is known as a Freedom Electric wheelchair. It still hurts my left leg if out too long in it but so does everything else. I love my partner very much and it is like a waking nightmare that we are going through with my extreme pain and disability and her secondary cancer in her spine. The scans show it is stable and hasn't moved since they found it 19 months ago but it has left my partner with many problems like weakness, memory loss and fear. I pray for her all the time. So we live from Scan to scan.
Watching your videos cheer me up a lot. You and Claudia make a wonderful couple. Enjoy your life together and fulfil as many dreams as you can while you are young. Disability seldom gets better. Claudia is a perfect wife to you and you are to her. My partner and I only met when I was 35 and she was 37. We so wish we had met long before I had gone through two emotionally abusive relationships. They can happen between two Lesbians as between man and a woman. Lots of love to you both xxxxxx❤️💐

okay but being able to fold/unfold something quickly is SO IMPORTANT! who wants to spend 10-15 minutes getting annoyed at a chair not unfolding and potentially spoiling the whole outing? I know it's not the same but I've nannied several kids who had prams and buggies that were absolutely impossible to unfold and it's not very nice standing behind your car, potentially somewhere where there's traffic, and not being able to use the thing you need. congrats on your big purchase! xxx

I HAVE A VERY SIMILAR CHAIR and it does meet most of your needs- in fact, I'd say it meets all your needs to some level. It fits in the car (though it's 48lbs), it goes on uneven surfaces (but not through snow), it can be used indoors and outdoors, I use it to get on buses and subways and trains. I put a pink backpack on it and a purple bag on the armrest (so I can stick my phone and keys in it for easy access when I don't have pockets.) It's GREAT!

The chair you chose looks perfect for my mom! She has MS, and we have a mobility scooter for her (that is actually awesome) but as her illness has progressed it would be much easier for her to stand straight up out of a chair instead of the slightly awkward side-climb into a scooter. This is WONDERFUL! Thank you. BTW, if anyone is curious the scooter is an EVRider from TranSport. It’s pretty awesome. We’ve gotten so many complements from flight attendants and nurses because of how well it works and folds.

Omg i was never so early ever on a video. But I just take the chance to thank you. This year wasn't the best. I discovered I have disease, which sometimes make my knees stop working and i cant walk so well. In the future I also probably need to get new knees xD But seeing your optimistic way of tackling life is contagious. So I just kinda accepted it and think about getting nice crutches for the days I'm not so mobil. Especially because I am sometimes unsure weather my disease is now a disability or not I was kinda scared of getting criticized for using crutches without any visible problems. Sometimes I don't even know if I should meet my friends because i dont know if i can walk the whole evening. But in the end it doesnt matter. Disability or not I still have a condition. I am so thankfull that you are so honest about your whole life, if disability or being very gay for your wife as well as historical information videos, which are very educational, as well as some nice vintage fashion videos.
And btw I am lesbian as well and seeing you and Claudia just gives me a little hope that I will find a beautiful wife as well some day ^^ Being so extremly single for my past 22 years I sometimes just lose faith.

      Hello!
Before you go in for knee surgery, you should get a test to see if you are allergic to any metals. In America we call it A Metals Allergy Patch Test.
You have to be super super careful about what you allow in your body. Having no metal in your body is always the best!

I work in a grocery store and I have seen soooo many types of mobility aids and I haven't seen an "ugly" one. Some are basic and some are so extreme that they can rise up quite a few feet. It's deffinatly a personal choice and what needs you have. Why not feel good about it, just like buying a car, in my opinion. Your video's just showed up about 2 weeks on my main page and I started watching. The first video was about your hands. I loved your humor, I was hooked. I have 2 minor chronic issues and yes I complain daily, not to others but to myself. It amazes me how you handle yourself even when you are pain 💜. When I'm in pain I get pissed off because sometimes doctors treat you like you don't know your own body 😡 I know I hurt daily, I know it's not what they think it is but yep trying another medication for week..... If it doesn't work then they will call the surgeon that did my emergency surgery a year and discuss the possibility of the pain being what I believe it is... UGH! Lol thank you for sharing your story, your life, your heart and Claudia with us, including your furry kids!
So I think my point was going to be after my little rant is YES pimp out your ride and make it your own😊

This looks like a great chair in terms of function and it sounds like you might be able to get seat covers and a paint job to make it your style! It’s not vapid at all to want something that will be an integral part of your life to also be aesthetically pleasing! People choose cars and bikes based on look and color the time. I’m so glad you were finally able to do this for yourself and I can’t wait to see the chair makeover :)

This has been educational, entertaining, thought-provoking, and really a joy. Thank you for sharing! I'm SO excited to see the details of how the new chair works for ou!!!

Hello Jessica! I just wanted to let you know that I'm currently working on a project with my classgroup in college and we actually chose to do something with making mobility materials look prettier and fancier than just the grey and beige look by decorating different parts. You were my huge inspiration for this project idea and it's going very well so thank you a lot! x

redweathertiger two of my friends at dnd work with disabled people. I have chronic fatigue, ehlers danlos amongst other things, and on that day I could not walk very well and was super dizzy (thanks PoTS) and both of the, offered. They got ,e to the toilet and thankfully I could unzip myself, but they both stayed outside and chatted to me while I was going then one helped me back up and got me to washing my hands (he washed his too ).
I'm thankfully not someone who has ever cared about privacy, mum called me her naked child heh. I have only been really chronically ill in the last 3 ish years. So I've been lucky that I don't care about privacy, otherwise I would be very uncomfortable.

Another option would be to buy a reconditioned/ex-demonstration model from a mobility aids company. They're cheaper than buying new. Or if you're mechanically-minded, you could get one from eBay or another site and do it up or adapt it for your needs. Advertise for a local art student to see what they can do. They can add it to their portfolio.

My powerchair is black with hot pink accents - so very me 💗! My husband’s is the same model but with blue accents. My daughter and son have a different model than we do, but the same model as each other. Hers is red, his is bright green (their fave colors.) I designed a sticker on Redbubble - Some wheelchair users can walk - and got those stickers for the 4 of us. Also bought awareness stickers about our illnesses and then lots of fun stickers for each of our chairs. My husband and I have Mickey & Minnie pointing hands that say “Hers” & “His” and people comment on how cute they are all the time ❤️

yes, auto shops have the ability to paint almost anything. And it can be less money to do. Refurbished antique furniture can be painted with an epoxy coat and it's stunning.

    • @writergirl3108
      @writergirl3108 Год назад

@@jenroses I had the Airhawk for two years and loved it. I don’t need to use a wheelchair all the time, but when I go to flea markets and such, I need it because I can’t walk those distances. I just recently upgraded to a chair very similar to the Electra and it is built more for the outdoors. It supports my weight better too. I also do have an electric mobility scooter that I use when I want to go on walks on trails with my mom or walk the dogs around the neighborhood. I also use the scooter at the local botanical gardens because it’s outdoors and it the scooter does better than my wheelchair with some slightly steep hills. So I use both and I’m happy with that decision. As to pimping, I have a bright purple chair and I have other personal touches.

Yey! This is another make of roughly My eloflex .... things that Ive learnt are: get great cushions they can provide height and make things more comfortable if needed. you can use a wheelchair cushion on the seat and a thin ribbed cushion for the back. A good way to keep it safe during flight is a babycarrige cover, you should be able to get an EU certifikate on the batteries from the manufacturer to give to the airline. You might want to look into a ramp to get into trains, subway, doorways etc there are portable ones which weigh roughly 3,4 kg ... always let someone else pick it up remember the train cant leave until someones picked up the ramp ;)

  • @reachandler3655

I have the same wheelchair. It's easy to fold (I can do that myself), I need help putting it up, but it is easy. It fits in car easily (but I can't lift it). It's great in supermarkets and malls.
I have found, however, it gets a mind of it's own on slopes/ramps (as did the other 2, much heavier rear wheel drive chairs I've had). I've lost count of how many walls I've hit because the path sloped that way, or how many times my friend has had to hold onto the back to control my descent down a hill or prevent rolling into the road when going across driveways!
I also found the leg room not sufficient (one leg doesn't bend fully), but I solved that with a gel cushion from Argos which effectively raises the seat. The downside to that is my feet no longer easily touch the floor, so can't be used as brakes/steering aids (hence hitting walls!)

Hi Jessica! You had mentioned not being able to carry a purse very easily with a power chair and I wanted to give you a tip that my grandmother uses in hers! She has MS and has been exclusively using a power chair for moving around for probably 30 years, so she has picked up some tricks. The bags and things she carries have been made/altered to velcro around the arm of her chair so they cannot be stolen and are easily accessible. This may not work for longer strapped purses, but any way you can alter the strap to unclasp and go around the arm so it hangs there works in our experience!
