The GT2 A-Spec mod is continuing this legacy of introducing me to obscure ass cars. Some cars people post there are so obscure there's barely any info on them whatsoever.
I was actually familiar with Hommell cars before they were eventually featured in Gran Turismo 4, but there's a bit of a story to it. All the way back in the very early 2000s, probably around the time GT3 came out, I had the opportunity to visit a museum in the French town of Lohéac, called the Manoir de l'Automobile. This museum is the property of Michel Hommell, and multiple Hommell cars are on display there (among many, many, many others), including the playable Berlinette RS Coupe and two prototypes of it, but also some of the versions you mentioned, such as the Berlinette Echappement, the Barquette, and even the RS2. Having returned to the museum in 2019 and in 2023, I'm happy to confirm they are all still there in nearly pristine condition. If you ever find yourself in this corner of France, I can't recommend visiting it enough, this is quite possibly the only way to see a Hommell in real life relatively conveniently.
@@purwantiallan5089 Nope. Berlinette : French word for a small sports coupé (similar to the Italian "berlinetta"). The original Alpine A110 was colloquially named "la berlinette" in France before the Hommell Berlinette has been released. Barquette : French word for a small sports roadster (generally without a windshield like a Renault Spider, similar to the Italian "barchetta") The Hommell Barquette was just a roofless version of the Berlinette.
Funnily enough, while deciding a team name/identity for my 2020 MyTeam career mode; Gran Turismo gave me the idea of reviving Chaparral as an F1 team. (The influence was particularly from the 2X VGT with some influence from the historically legendary Chaparral's like the 2J, 2D and the Indycar championship winning 2K) After winning 40+ Grand Prix's and 4 Drivers and 3 Constructor's Titles and loving the pure insanity from Jim Hall's innovations. Chaparral became one of my favorite stories of Motorsport. God Bless Jim Hall.
17:40 yo I just wanna say I appreciate you actually going over WHAT was changed in the rebuild, it feels like everybody who talks about this car simply mentions it's not 100%, but never goes into what was actually different.
I always wondered how the devs were finding those cars at all, especially back in the 90's. They probably had a special department that was going through foreign magazines to find what they can. And even if they did, I can't imagine how hard it was for a Japanese person to try and contact a little custom car manufacturer somewhere in Europe.
New Roflwaffle video let's go boys! Fun fact: I'm the creator of GT Wiki's Gran Turismo 2 car images, the ones at Motor Sports Land. You can see it at 4:23 of this video, for example. It's so nice to see them featured here on your channel!
Hey man, since you're here, I was wondering, why did you hide or maybe even delete all your previous videos? You've had gorgeous concepts of some kind of "Gran Turismo Remakes", which had beautiful design and I really miss them, since it's a great example of the idea "if you'll take the UI design from the old games and remake it in Full HD - it would be strongly competitive even to modern games". I was your subscriber for a couple of years and unsubscribed only after you've hidden all the content, so I was really curious for a long time, why did all of this happen
It's funny how, because Gran Turismo doesn't simulate engine malfunctions, cars that are considered unreliable IRL are able to shine in-game. The Minolta 88C-V is a great example as you show, since it's 50kg lighter than most other Group C's without any real downside. The tyre wear issue can be fixed by lengthening the gears or driving in MT, since 1st and 2nd gear are pretty much unusable when it has over 900hp. The FD RX-7's are top-class JDM's as well in a world where you're not forced to deal with rotary shenanigans. By the way, to give a bit of insight into the V16T, GT4 absolutely doesn't do it justice. Cars in GT4 follow a general rule of "newer = better", so PD gave the V16T far worse grip stats than, say, the Zonda's or Esprit's. It has a few weird quirks as well: it has 0 / 20 non-adjustable downforce and the rear tyres are much wider than the front, so while it does have a 40:60 weight distribution, it feels very strange in corners because it both understeers and oversteers depending on the situation. This is all on top of it weighing 1361kg after reductions, so yeah, it's a boat with some not-so-ideal braking distances, and tuning can only really do so much to help it.
Whenever you think gear ratios are unusuable, use these numbers: 1 1.15 1.35 1.65 2.1 2.5 And then adjust the final ratio until it's good for the car's top speed. This way the car will have a MotoGp-esque ratio where 1st is really long and usable with all the other gears keeping you in the highest part of your RPMs. If the car has 7 gears the top gear should be like 0.95 or so.
@@DanArnets1492 Those numbers are going to be different for every car, especially if you mess with the auto slider. There's an easier way to get those close gear ratios though, if you make final as short as possible, set auto to 1, stretch out the gears with final again, then arrange the individual ratios so 1st and 2nd are left, 5th and 6th are right, and 4th is 3/4's to the right. For the 88C-V, that would be: final to 5.500, then auto to 1 then final to 2.600, then set individual gears to 2.882, 2.061, 1.685, 1.390, 1.159, 0.976.
@@TeaKanji - That 1st gear is gonna be considerably shorter than the one I told you. I told you a 2.5 with a 1.0 for top, you just said 2.88 and 0.98...
@@TeaKanji - The numbers are universal. Use those numbers, then just play with the final gear ratio (use LM24 or even Twin Ring Motegi to test) until you're hitting the top speed you want. I use them in GT7, Forza8, FH5... It's very very useful!

I saw the jaguar xj13 at the heritage museum about 20 years ago as a teen. They also had the 88 xjr9 there. They said if the guy who usually works there was in I could have sat in it 😅. I did buy a really good jaguar in group c book that I still have to this day. I'd seen the Cizeta before in a supercar book in the library early 90s. I watched the Minolta Toyota racing in the 1988 1000 km of Fuji (I was 4 years old) on VHS. My dad used to go to le mans to support jaguar which was common in Coventry. Great video! I was definitely thinking the Vectors were going to get a spotlight here. Perhaps next time! The line-up in this video was definitely top tier stuff for the theme.
the mention of the Diablo's debut coinciding with the premium remodel of the Cizeta made me realise GT must have paid tribute to their licencing workarounds when the Ruf brand and the BMW McLaren returned in the new gen GTs.
What a great video to watch. I'm so glad you're doing this and bringing this pieces to the spotlight with such good context about them in real life. Thank you so much for your work man!
I've found very interesting recently with the dawn of GT youtubers, the fact that I've completed GT4 World Championship with the Nissan R89C to actually be out of ordinary. I knew the Minolta was kinda strong but I do remember the AI piting earlier for tires, while I could stretch my stints a bit further in races.
30:00 seeing Toyota retiring from the race due to the cars breaking down feels so unreal, like it's not right... Then again, Carlos Sainz back in 1998 WRC season with his Corolla...
I would love to see a video about the few trucks that have been featured in Gran Turismo. As a “car” game, I always found it a bit weird that they would even bother adding trucks to begin with. That being said I wish polyphony would add more as they are some of my favorite vehicles to mess around with.
The 88C-V is among one of the most beautiful race cars I’ve ever looked at, and while I never saw it in GT, it was brought to my attention by a friend talking about its appearance.
Your videos are so good, they're always so well produced and researched and I really appreciate your passion for the Gran Turismo series, as well racing games in general!
Thank you for the added history about Michel Hommel, it’s a nice added touch to add this footnote of Le Mans history. The idea of a Virage powered DB7 would be fantastic, I wonder if there is an alternate universe where the AML V12 never got made and that 6.3 V8 DB7 became the Vanquish.
30:01 that also happened in late 2010s, some year between 2017 and 2019, but i can't remember when, i just remember the sheer sadness of the ones who wanted Porsche's streak to end
Back in 2008 I managed to sit in a Garaiya at the Tokyo Auto Salon; it was a demo car for a company selling car stereos (Carrozerria I think they were called, though it also could have been Pioneer as they sold a line called Carrozzerria). The representative was trying to talk to me about the soundstage but all I wanted to talk about was the car lol. AFAIK there were 25 cars made altogether, and some were sold in the UK.
I have vaguely fond memories of the XJ13 trying to win the historic racing car cup with my best friend. It was such an erratic handful and slightly underspec compared to its rivals so you had to be all but perfect throughout the entire race to win, the race at deep forest was one of those where if you made a mistake you just had to restart because there was no catching up. After about 40 restarts I finally managed to get into the zen like state where man and car became one and despite a big twitch on the 2nd to last left hander where the GT40 managed to get past I managed to make a big lunge into the last corner and out dragged it to the line with a gap in the thousandths. Huge relief and forever viewed as a driving god by my best friend
Had no idea that chaparral itself existed, but the moment i found 2D on gran turismo (psp) i imediatly fell for it, I dont know, it just looks so damn good, and the history it carries is just icing on the cake.
As many cars Gran Turismo has introduced me to I looked at racing history due to reading the description of some of the cars so I had to do my own research and I found more cars than any Gran Turismo or Forza game could ever show me Gran Turismo showed me that cars was my passion same with engineering and mechanics this gave me my career
A great video as always. My Gran Turismo discovery was the humble Mitsubishi FTO. Not super obscure, but it wasnt sold in my country and I was like 3 years old lol
As a car guy this is actually the reverse for me, i remember trying to find games that had certain cars in them. Theres an extreme lack of lamborghini miuras before the social media age. Then now all of a sudden miuras are in everything
For a video about cars people only know because of the games, you could find a dozen of them in GT4 alone, like the Jay Leno Tank Car, possibly the biggest car in the series, Spyker C8 Laviolette, a car forgotten after the brand was mismanaged to oblivion, Buick Special, a car only added because the devs liked it during a car show, and even some cool but very iconic concepts like Dome Zero, Nike One, Mazda Kusabi and especially Toyota RSC!
The Honda NSX became my favourite car, thanks to the original Gran Turismo. It also has quite a fascinating history, what with Ayrton Senna involved in the design. Seeing that in one of your videos, Roflwaffle, would be great. This was fantastic, nonetheless, and very interesting - thank you!
What I find funny is that the Hot Wheels car came out the year before GT4 came out in Japan. Makes me wonder if Hot Wheels and GT got their ideas separately or not.
Already looking forward to the video about the two (non-existent) Tommy kiara cars at 4:26 :D The white one reminds me alot of the Watson Revenge Racer from Burnout
of course some of your older videos were necessary to make, but I think I speak for most when I say that these videos are 1000x better than whinging about the game for an hour. keep up the good work
The Chaparral 2 D is my Absolute Fav. I just LOVE How it accelerates Like a Rocket Once its gets passed 100 Kmh aka First Gear. Cant wait to get it in GT 7.
Tommy Kaira ZZ-II is still one of my favourite looking cars, and also one of my favourites to drive in game. and i would never have heard about it if it wasnt for Gran Turismo
the Minolta car is a perfect example, imho, of a car/livery out living the on-track performance of said car. It's a beautiful group C car with attractive body lines and shapes, and it's livery is iconic in it's own right. Plenty of nascar, indycar, and F1 car's follow in that same footstep.
Fun fact: Giorgio Moroder, produced the song "Highway to the danger zone", made famous by Top Gun, often thought to be a song about "going Mach 2 with your hair on fire", but, the lyrics were written by his mechanic (for some reason, that's awesome) and they're about driving a Ferrari at high speeds through winding back roads.
Any proof? Because the lyrics were clearly meant for *_flying_* at over the speed of sound in a jet fighter. The "Danger Zone" in question being enemy territory.
@@HansenSebastian there's a documentary about the making of Top Gun (fun fact: the documentary is actually way longer than the running time of the movie), in which Giorgio himself, explains it. And it's kinda ambiguous, because of things like "preading out her wings" and "begging you to touch and go" ("touch and go" being a term used for aborted landing on an aircraft carrier, like the one Maverick pulls at the beginning, when he goes to save Cougar) but also, you don't, necessarily "rev-up" a jet engine, and the certainly don't have an "overdrive".
Awesome video as always. If you ever make another video like this then i would love to see you feature the GR.3 VW Beetle. Not only because of the ridiculous nature of a very unusual racecar but also because, in 2021 a fully functional replica was built by the renowned German tuning company JP Performance.
I mean yeah, i only knew of the '89 Toyota Minolta 88c-v race car because of GT4. It was insane to see a car, with a big turbo and an oil change hit over 1,200 hp.
I've always wondered if Polyphony Digital would ever make a bus or train game in the same way. Iconic vehicles and routes of the past, dazzling graphics, phenomenal love for the content they make, no DLC... But this is GT3/GT4 era PD I'm talking about here. I wonder if it still exists.
I couldn’t ever not giggle a bit, driving the xj13 in gtsport’s historic races. There’s only one in the whole world, but here you are driving it. And four of your AI opponents have one as well. I ended up owning three :) I know, there is an accurate replica around. Tiff Needell drove one once.
I think you should make a video about the impact of Gran Turismo on the automotive industry. There's the Vision Gran Turismo cars (and the fact that those cars previewed the design language that those manufacturers would later use like the Bugatti Vision GTs design being used for the Chiron and the Mercedes Vision GTs design being used by the AMG GT etc), there were those unique demos of Gran Turismo that were used at Motor Shows and car dealerships to show off cars from specific manufacturers (that you talked about in your previous video) to prospective buyers, there's the fact that Nissan hired Polyphony Digital to design the multifunction display of the Nissan GTR and there's the GT Academy that led to people like Jann Mardenborough to race for Nissan in real-life motorsports. There's probably more that I don't know about that you could definitely cover in a video. It's amazing how a video game franchise about a particular industry could have such an effect on that very industry. The only other franchise I can think of with a similarly large impact is the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series.
How about a video about Gran Turismo's concept cars, and how they turned out to be today It's always intriguing seeing cars that is quite common nowadays depicted as futuristic concept in the 2005 game, for example Suzuki Swift, Mazda 6, Audi R8, and GTR R35
I originally found out about the Tommykaira ZZ Gen. 2 from Tomica - the JP Die Cast cars - and to find out that its first generation exists in GT just makes me love this quirky little JP Elise boi even more, the Tommykaira ZZ came in 2 colors from Tomica - red and yellow. I had the yellow one and it's still sold at my local toy store despite it not being made anymore, i got the car along with another goofy boi that sadly isn't in GT i think - that being the Toyota IQ casting from '09.

the mention of the Diablo's debut coinciding with the premium remodel of the Cizeta made me realise GT must have paid tribute to their licencing workarounds when the Ruf brand and the BMW McLaren returned in the new gen GTs.
What a great video to watch. I'm so glad you're doing this and bringing this pieces to the spotlight with such good context about them in real life. Thank you so much for your work man!
The 2D is legitimately the best looking racers from it's period, always gets slept on just from a design perspective.
thank you for talking about the TommyKaira models and the ASL models they were so strange to me but i loved them, especially the ZZ-II
Dude, you started the vid with Friday Night…if I hear the pillows anywhere soon you’ll be my fav RUclipsr forevermore
When did he say Friday night?
Opening up the video with yakuza 0 OST is absolutely genius
I've found very interesting recently with the dawn of GT youtubers, the fact that I've completed GT4 World Championship with the Nissan R89C to actually be out of ordinary. I knew the Minolta was kinda strong but I do remember the AI piting earlier for tires, while I could stretch my stints a bit further in races.
30:00 seeing Toyota retiring from the race due to the cars breaking down feels so unreal, like it's not right...
Then again, Carlos Sainz back in 1998 WRC season with his Corolla...
Anyone here ordering a V16T?
Nope
If I had the money I would in a heart beat. I have always loved that car. It is so cool and batshit
@@BouncingZeus i would too. I think i'd order a yellow open-top version
one of the best videos I've seen in a long time, this one was highly nostalgic. thank you for making it.
I would love to see a video about the few trucks that have been featured in Gran Turismo. As a “car” game, I always found it a bit weird that they would even bother adding trucks to begin with. That being said I wish polyphony would add more as they are some of my favorite vehicles to mess around with.
Yeah, a newer Raptor and a TRX would be great. Not to mention Toyota recently debuting new generations for all their trucks and BOF SUVs.
Some bloke at Mattel must have seen the Isuzu Como Concept. Its resemblance to the Deora II is undeniable!
Callaway C12 became my childhood dream car because of this game, not realizing it's actually a Corvette
I’m in total agreement with the ZZ-II being one of the best looking cars never made. I loved that thing in GT3 too, used it at every opportunity.
Thanks for makings this videos i really enjoy them. Great work.
Gran Turismo as a child is what started my passion for cars
The Tekken 4 music goes unbelievably hard. Good choice
The Nike One 2022 the concept that was never forgotten
I'm the same. There's a guy on my street who drives a Supra and no one understands why I go gaga over it, to my wife it's 'just a Toyota'
I’ll break the no concept car rule: Mazda Furai. My absolute favourite
As a car guy this is actually the reverse for me, i remember trying to find games that had certain cars in them.
Theres an extreme lack of lamborghini miuras before the social media age. Then now all of a sudden miuras are in everything
Nice to see that someone got into the details and history of these obscure cars. ❤
Great video! Yes Gran Turismo raised generations of car maniacs :D
Real video of THE Minolta always provide goosebumps
That Isuzu is definitely where hot wheels stole the idea for Deora II
A fan of tekken music I see, great taste
For a video about cars people only know because of the games, you could find a dozen of them in GT4 alone, like the Jay Leno Tank Car, possibly the biggest car in the series, Spyker C8 Laviolette, a car forgotten after the brand was mismanaged to oblivion, Buick Special, a car only added because the devs liked it during a car show, and even some cool but very iconic concepts like Dome Zero, Nike One, Mazda Kusabi and especially Toyota RSC!
Digging the Tekken 4 music!
Minolta! My favourite car!
Thanks for posting some real life footage of it that I had never seen before.
I feel like this could make a nice series. There are a lot of obscure cars in these games...
I remember having a Chaparral 2D as a Hot Wheels car when I was a kid. Nice of you to mention the 2D nonetheless.
What I find funny is that the Hot Wheels car came out the year before GT4 came out in Japan. Makes me wonder if Hot Wheels and GT got their ideas separately or not.
Already looking forward to the video about the two (non-existent) Tommy kiara cars at 4:26 :D
The white one reminds me alot of the Watson Revenge Racer from Burnout
of course some of your older videos were necessary to make, but I think I speak for most when I say that these videos are 1000x better than whinging about the game for an hour. keep up the good work
07:03 it honestly looks like a mini Saleen S7
For me it's the ASL Garaiya, and especially the race version. That car drives so well, I love it.
*GameAnyone logo shows up in the bottom right corner*
me: oh hey, unexpected rynogt4 footage
The 2D struck my interest from the moment I saw it in GT4 over the 2J, I ADORE the 2D as one of my many go to cars when it's featured.
Hooray, you just saved my day! 🥳
The Chaparral 2 D is my Absolute Fav. I just LOVE How it accelerates Like a Rocket Once its gets passed 100 Kmh aka First Gear. Cant wait to get it in GT 7.
Roflwaffle playing Friday Night in the background is an absolute W.
Probably not as obscure as I’m thinking it is but I think the only reason I know of the Lister Storm is because of GT
Tommy Kaira ZZ-II is still one of my favourite looking cars, and also one of my favourites to drive in game. and i would never have heard about it if it wasnt for Gran Turismo
I love the Minolter so much it carried me throughout all my GT4-GT6 playthrough.
the Minolta car is a perfect example, imho, of a car/livery out living the on-track performance of said car. It's a beautiful group C car with attractive body lines and shapes, and it's livery is iconic in it's own right. Plenty of nascar, indycar, and F1 car's follow in that same footstep.
Awesome video idea dude… Nice!
If GT can bring back cars from the dead, they need to do that w/ the Mazda Furai, may she rest in peace. That car was amazing in the earlier GT games!
@@HansenSebastianMoroder did the 1984 revision of the German Sci-fi classic: "Metropolis." The theme he did was called "Machines."
my waffles have been roffled i'm so hyped rn
the jauguar xj13 was always my favorite, love the curves and sound!
Awesome video as always. If you ever make another video like this then i would love to see you feature the GR.3 VW Beetle. Not only because of the ridiculous nature of a very unusual racecar but also because, in 2021 a fully functional replica was built by the renowned German tuning company JP Performance.
Stuff like the Gillet Vertigo is a good honorable mention
I mean yeah, i only knew of the '89 Toyota Minolta 88c-v race car because of GT4. It was insane to see a car, with a big turbo and an oil change hit over 1,200 hp.
the yakuza music and gran Turismo mashup always gets me hyped
Wasn’t expecting to hear Tekken 4 music
I've always wondered if Polyphony Digital would ever make a bus or train game in the same way. Iconic vehicles and routes of the past, dazzling graphics, phenomenal love for the content they make, no DLC...
But this is GT3/GT4 era PD I'm talking about here. I wonder if it still exists.
I couldn’t ever not giggle a bit, driving the xj13 in gtsport’s historic races. There’s only one in the whole world, but here you are driving it. And four of your AI opponents have one as well. I ended up owning three :)
I know, there is an accurate replica around. Tiff Needell drove one once.
Thanks for another great video!
The only other franchise I can think of with a similarly large impact is the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series.
also GT is the reason the impreza wrx/sti's and lancer evo's got released outside of Japan
VGTs influencing irl car design is a myth, and Jann failed under the GT/Nissan program
Don't fall for the marketing my guy
How about a video about Gran Turismo's concept cars, and how they turned out to be today
It's always intriguing seeing cars that is quite common nowadays depicted as futuristic concept in the 2005 game, for example Suzuki Swift, Mazda 6, Audi R8, and GTR R35
