This is the BEST dinking video i've ever watched on youtube. We need more advanced videos where we go through all the nuanced details of how to execute shots (along with strategy)
Did a clinic with Preston this year and it was very informative, he has a good eye for body mechanics and could point out pretty quickly the flaws in movement, I still tell myself "early and under" when I dont bend my knees.
Wow I’m loving this content. Playing 4.0 currently and this is exactly the stuff I need. I think a lot of coaching content is too recycled. This feels higher level. Sounds similar to things our local Pro says 🤘🏻
Always nice when you hear multiple coaches saying the same thing, gives you a lot of confidence. Thanks for the feedback! Let me know if there is anything else you want to see!
@@JoshJPickleball what I’m currently working on is keeping my strokes much more compact, elbows in tighter, and always resetting to a good ready position . That’s helping every aspect of my game especially counters at the net. If you have any nuances or tips on those that’d be awesome! I saw a video with data that like 80% of shots at 4.0ish are not dinks. And that’s been my experience at tourneys as well so far.
...and BTW some of my favorite tips were Laser Pointer + shoulder-only / less movement + get quick to the spot first + start w/ Open Face + crouch & load b4 starting forward swing + less wristy more locked wrist + 1 plus 2 = 3 (u gots maths too??). Epic.
Amazing video 10/10. I have watched a lot of drinking videos but this is the best explanation of all the small things that combined make the dink shot consistent and effective. I will rewatch this a number of times as there is so much info to remember to take to the court to drill. The instruction format from both of you allows the specific details to be shown/corrected and still keep the instructional flow moving. New subscriber looking forward to watching your other videos . Thx for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you so much! I am so glad you liked this, please save it and refer back. I always try and focus on one item during a training session as to not overwhelm and truly be able to focus. I appreciate the support and will be getting new content out shortly!
@@JoshJPickleball Already saved :-), and watched 3x, I could feel difference last nite during warm up, more work on dinking today-thx again. Be good for your channel to see you and Preston do some more vids together in this type of instructional format
I like how student explains you don’t have to do 1 dinks because not challenged enough. Love the video! The 1 and 2 dinks is a quick way to identify aggressive and easier dinks- also love how you say early and open. You also identify his tendency to lean rather than bend. Also love the 2 and through. Constant feedback well done. It also shows how it’s hard to fix bad habits!
Oh man, this is freaking awesome. It’s great when you’re critiquing someone who’s decently advanced! Could you do a video of what type of 3rd shot drops there are and how to use each of them depending on the pace. For example, if I’m on the baseline, ball is coming to my backhand at a fast pace, and I decided to do a drop, do I slice or should I attempt backhand drop with top spin - and describe the angle of how my paddle should be facing. Stuff like that.
Thanks so much for the great feedback. Will definitely be doing more videos like this in the future. Will look to address your question about the third shot as well!
This video is super educational for learning proper pickleball techniques, but I have to admit, it's a bit overwhelming with all the information and direction thrown at me while I'm just starting out. Thanks for the great tips-I'll try to take it one step at a time!
I agree- so much to digest. Caleb is a friend of Prestons from their spikeball glory days and we only had one afternoon to work with him while he was town. Without the their existing relationship and being in a time crunch, we wouldn’t have dug into that much in a single lesson. Great observation! If you could take one thing away from the lesson, get the paddle face open and paddle head below the ball when dinking!
Dude this is freaking awesome. My son & I are 4.6 and i am trying to learn a 5.5 Dink (without regular access to 5.5 playas to model after)...and literally have not been able to figure out the technical holes in my dink game to figure out where i need to self-correct my shots in order to hit the ball technically correct. Too many times "hitting a good dink w/bad technique reinforces me to hit that same shot again". But your vid is the 1st time i finally understand how to analyze & breakdown where MY faulty technique is as compared to a Pro-style 5.5/6 style dink. And what was amazing is that i could see how you threw TONS of new techniques @Preston & i could self-identify WHY & HOW he was not exectuting them correctly at times b/c your instruction was so pinpoint accurate. Plus having TWO instructors was epic b/c at times Preston executed better when a 2nd Instr offered a diff metaphor or approach to the same tactic. And kudos to Preston - what a wicked gr8 student...it actually helped to see on occasion how he could NOT apply the tactic but thru trial & error was able to get closer to the To Be State. Seriously - the Best. Technical. Advanced. Dink. Instruction. EVAAAH. Saving & Subsribing to *all* your crap from now on, dog. I'm proclaiming it, Josh - 5.5 my son & i here we come.....WELL DONE MATIES!
Hi Corey! Thank you so much for the great feedback and I love how you highlighted your favorite tips. That is the best thing about pickleball- ability to practice with your son! Let me know if I can do anything to help you two out!
What did @Prestonbies say at 8:13? He said "_____ the ball early is literally all pickle is"? This is such a high level teaching video, thank you so much.
Nice video and good instruction. Seems like student could have made it easier on himself by crouching lower in his ready position. When he reaches, he sometimes looks awkward because he's leaning too much. But I can tell he's already a good player.
I think he needs to find a balance between taking balls out of air and a little pivot step! Once he does that, and moves confidently. Sky is the limit!
I agree, this is the BEST dinking video on YT. Its like being shown the secrets the inner circle dont reveal. So useful. The motorcycle reference turned on a light for me. Final point, please dont use Spikeball AND Legend in the same sentence.
Happy to let you see behind the curtain! Let us know how else we can help! Also, those two guys are spikeball legends (in their own minds) and maybe are national champs too!
You guys kept trying to get him to bend/condense.You should have gone over ready position and just had him stay in ready position with bent knees the whole time to get used to being condensed as you say. From there he can loosen up when he gets the feel for it.
Geez. How hard is it to just show the poor guy how to hold an open face instead of trying to explain it! The info is good but the delivery is explained in a complicated manner. Like the sum of three,,, just say if you get a defensive dink ,hit a push dink and viceversa. But still, great video. Thank you!
Tough to gauge rating just by watching drilling but I do appreciate the feedback. Definitely could improve footwork in the dink patterns and leaning middle anticipating the dink. But in general, strong player with lots of athleticism. You should see his counters and volleys!
Give him a break, he’s breaking out of his comfort zone to learn better techniques. This is why most rec players don’t get better. They are not willing to get worse first in order to improve ( going outside comfort zone).
By far the best intro dink video I’ve seen.
You have a rare talent in teachig Josh.
Thank you! Let me know what other skills you want to develop!

Paddle under the ball is HUGE key to success

Great job Boysterous!
He knows!
These guys have a LOT of patience. Caleb just isn't opening up his paddle!
Typical Caleb!
Excellent content ... it is really hard to hear Preston clearly though
If someone hit a dink 2, and I return a dink 1 back, wouldn’t they just attack it?
Playing pickleball fun, playing fetch with dog priceless
Can the guy in the white shirt give a private lesson? Asking for a friend😅
shouldnt his feet also be pointed towards you not straight ahead?
I like feet slightly open but try and avoid turning to completely face the target. Make it much easier for balls to get behind you.
I guess you don't have to bend your knees in Spikeball?
kid just refuses to bend his legs lol.
Exactly- he should be lower stance - less upright stance
I have this problem too but bend helps so much to get under and anticipate the ball I think it’s because he’s tall i am also LOL hard habit to break
This guy has a lifetime of not bending his knees...gonna take a while to break the habit. Everything else comes as a result of not bending the knees.
In pickleball we want efficient movement and to do so, we need some more leg bend. Spot on.
You guys kept trying to get him to bend/condense.You should have gone over ready position and just had him stay in ready position with bent knees the whole time to get used to being condensed as you say. From there he can loosen up when he gets the feel for it.

Very weak footwork and poor anticipation. More like 3.5 tops probably.
