That was way beyond careless. Reckless endangerment Where in the rule book does it say you can launch yourself intentionally at someone's head? They should have a Dog's Act clause, and double any penalties. He chose to go the head and not the body. Pickett needs to be sitting out for 4 weeks and have his pay for that time donated to a hospital specializing in head trauma. But he won't. They'll let him off lightly.
Smith should get 2 weeks for being caught high .. again !

Jumping up to bump has been off limits for a long time, plus it's supposed to be hip and shoulder which this bump clearly was not. If they send a message in round 1 it better be the same in round 22, none of this "but he'll miss finals!" BS.

Even 4 weeks would not be a deterrant. Until the AFL get serious about criminal activity in the sport, it will continue. The AFL is a business machine with $$$ its primary objective. So as long as fans are attracted by brutality, the AFL will limit penalty to a slap on the wrist.
Smith was fortunate not to have suffered a chronic neck injury. A hard but fair bump is OK, but Pickett was out to injure his opponent.

It's in the best interest of the AFL to dish out harsher penalties because otherwise people will keep doing it and then victims will sue them for millions afterwards for concussion and mental issues after footy, resulting in the AFL losing more money. How the fck Pickett got 2 weeks for that is a joke. How was that not a minimum of 4 weeks? Either way, we both agree the AFL r a fcking joke and have been for a long time now

Totally reckless action that needs to be stamped out of the game. Anything could have happened there. They need to revise the minimum penalties for actions that can cause concussions and brain damage. The outcome shouldn't be factored into punishment, it is the act that needs to be punished. Minimum 4 games imo for using your body as a missile aimed at a person's head region.

The AFL need to grow a set show leadership and ban front on bumping entirely. There is too much danger involved and people who insist on having front on bumping in the game are morons and have no respect for players welfare. Our game is tackling so leave it at that or side on bumping to gain position and ban shirtfronting entirely.

Watching Aussie footy from the US, I notice a high percentage of indiginous players intending to injure white players... never a black player hitting another black. Is there a reverse discrimination problem in Australia?
No it's nothing like that at all we just play a tougher brand of football we're just less professional.

As a doctor, I cringe when I see head trauma: even if the individual does not suffer loss of consciousness, a hit to the head doubles the likelihood of early dementia and Alzheimer's. That hit on Smith was criminal.
@@TheBinaryWolf Stuff like this happens because it's a full contact sport for example head to head clashes in the NFL although illegal now, can and do still happen in the sport a guy literally had a heart attack earlier in the season these things happen.
So for me atleast I hold the opinion that the players understand the risks and it's up to them if they want to play the sport or not it sounds heartless and unsympathetic but they understand the risks.

Incidentally, have you ever seen a black player shirt-front another player? I have not, and I have watched the game since 1955.
@@TheBinaryWolfthe AFL need to hurry up and make helmets compulsory in the AFL. Games speeds up year after year which means the hits get harder pound for pound. Which is why the AFL is the toughest sport on the planet
