    Great insight into a plugged cat and how the engine responds to an abnormal situation.The baro reading was an eye opener.

    Great tip Brian. I have gotten so used to using my backpressure gauge set or an infrared thermometer for restricted cat diagnosis. Really appreciate the use of the baro pid, always used graphing O2's over each other for efficiency diag. Thanks for the great vids and congrats on the new shop/house, you deserve it.

    Sensational video series!
    In this video, the loud rattle during road test, pinging or cat rattle? I ask because I have an 07 5.4 with a severe power issue. It was driven by PO way too long with a major manifold leak on bank 1 and (prob from it) a front O2 on that side showing 0V and code locked lean. I've replaced the O2 and all plugs and fuel filter. Idle is good, no noises etc. Light driving decent, under high load, engine groans like it's opening the throttle fully, bogs down and starts to ping and rattle. Backing off, it settles down and idles etc. I'm already suspect of the cat since downstream O2 on that side fluctuates inline with upstream O2 while downstream on other side is pretty stable around .6v..
    If that under load rattle in your video is engine knock, it's what mine does, just a terribly expensive part to replace on spec..
    Thanks for any time you're willing to throw at this!
    Greg

    when my converters plugged up, i cut them out, hollowed them and reinstalled and use defoulers to get the sensors out so there isn’t an engine light, runs great and sounds mean with the exhaust system on it!

    I ran a dead cylinder on bank one for about a week until I figured out the problem, and ruined my converter on that side. It would rattle occasionally, but it was drivable. Anyhow, started up a mountain the other day & the truck wouldn’t go over 35mph. No power. Every time I accelerated it would rev to maybe 3,000 rpm & the engine would act like I hit the rev limiter & the RPMs would drop to idle. Either the right side converter, or the exhaust past the converter was occluded with what I imagine was the innards of that converter. Got to the top of the mountain & steadily accelerated after there wasn’t an incline to deal with. Finally, the truck made a loud pop & blew a cloud of black dust out the tail pipe. It ran great after that. Lol

    @Ford Techmakuloco I have a 2004 ford Taurus that I just picked up cheap.. I'm getting po420 and po430 codes.. my scanner isn't as fancy as yours but I can look at the live data and it shows the voltage pouncing between .11 to .6 volts on the downstream O2 sensors.. I'm suspecting it's bad cats because when I bought the car, I had to replace a leaky heater core hose assembly.. there for I'm willing to bet that the car has been run hot a time or to.. I've had the car for a couple of weeks and I'm not losing any coolant and I don't see any traces or water in the oil.. so I don't really think that I have a bad intake gasket.. when I first started working on the car I did have a vacuum leak do to a O ring. I fixed that and the po173 and 174 never came back.. after that.. I went and got some plug non-foulers and spaced out the o2 sensors.. I thought that would cure it and I was able to drive the car quit and ways before it tripped the light.. so what say you? Do these sound like the symptoms of burned out cats?

  • @philh9238
    @philh9238 9 лет назад +2

    maybe the owner fixed the p0305 but he didnt fix it in time and it screwed the cat converter up, a quick and dirty test for a suspect plugged exhaust is get the o2 sensor readings up like you did and floor the thing see if they go full rich if they do definetly suspect the cat or cats.

  • @josephpettus3718

    Check this out ..
    If it has burnt out the cat , And by the sound of it being broken up inside the metal housing it has . Then how would it become stopped up per say and restrict the flow output ? Unless it has pushed the cat material out and into the muffler? I understand that is what its doing. With the misfire at the cylinder . Is it possible that it could be the pc overloading the air fuel mixture trying to compensate for the reading that the 02 sensors are relaying and causing the misfire to happen under load ?

    I have a Ford Transit 350HD with a 3.7L engine and, what I suspect, a rattling catalytic converter on the driver's side. I don’t have a "check engine" light on nor any cat codes when I use my INNOVA 6100P OBD2 tester. I took a rubber mallet, crawled underneath the van, when cold, and tapped on the cat shield and crossover pipe as it connects to the suspected cat. It does make a sound, as if, it had gravel in it. It has less than 26,000 miles on it. The cat shield doesn't look loose. It just, puzzles me, how can the material be loose inside the cat with such low miles and no "check engine" light nor codes.

    I got a check engine light on my 2007 Ford f150.
    And was diagnosed with a P0420 code.
    There probably is an issue with the catalytic converter, but my car runs great. When I accelerate my truck takes right off. Could it most likely be a sensor? Thaks for your awesome vide

    I'm getting an "intermittent" P0430 2014 Ford Flex NA.
    *Injectors ohm out at 14.5
    New plugs, coils and cleaned Throttle body.
    *Baro is rock steady 103
    *Downstream o2's both sit at . 83 volts.
    STFTR1 Is almost a solid line.
    STFTR2 has a little wiggle to it.
    Today I did a KOER Test and it came back with a P1101 MAF code, so I put in a fresh air filter, and tommorow with CRC the MAF Sensor.
    The acceleration seemed held back up to 6k but after that it gets with the program.
    Any insight to this data is much appreciated.

    I had this problem on my E250 2007. Another thing to mention is your car won't go fast than 45 mph. I spent over 2000$ at the garage. Ya I changed all the coils, and plugs. Quick tip if you don't have the scan tool is to pull the Oxygen sensor before the cat if there is a lot of air pressure then your cat is blocked. I could have saved over 1200$ here on this ones boys and girls. Some mechanics don't know crap. and are just glorified parts swappers.

    Quick Questions -
    Background Info - 2009 F150 4.6L 3V, Automatic Transmission, 58K miles, I drive in tropical weather all year long (outside temp is never over 90eg or under 60deg) ... I basically use regular unleaded gas all year long except for three times a year When I run a tankful of 92 octane.
    I have tried several fuel system cleaning products and methods to keep my engine fuel tank and fuel delivery system in top notch shape. None of which left me feeling that anything made a noticeable difference except for the BG 44K that you recommended.
    After using BG 44K I immediately noticed that my MPG numbers fell drastically. From 17MPG to 12MPG and it now averages about 13MPG.
    I suspect that the 13MPG is the true number because I backed that up twice with actual gas tank fill up gallon/miles numbers. Really close to 13MPG.
    My first question - How can i get those MPG up?
    I don't ricky road rage race my truck but have had it up to 100MPH once or twice since buying it new. I'm just an old truck guy that takes exceptional care of my vehicles and don't ever abuse them.
    I've already done the FOMOCO sparkplug and coil change, trans filter/gasket and oil change with FOMOCO parts (and I replaced the trans bulkhead adapter while pan was down), replaced high quality air filter, Clean fresh engine oil is changed every 4000miles on average (I've only used Mobile 1 or Royal Purple oil from day one). I check my truck monthly for any trouble codes and have no codes listed or stored. My upcoming next planned maintenance is lubing the drive shaft splines with FOMOCO PTFE grease. I don't have any oil/fluid leaks. Compression is normal across all cylinders. All coil packs are good to go and within normal readings. Pulse width is normal. Acceleration is immediate and smooth. Cruising speeds and ride is normal.
    Second question - Will adding second can of BG 44K help increase MPG or even make a difference?
    Third Question - Am I missing some mechanical process or step to help get the MPG back up?
    Appreciate any advice and or recommendations. Probably is what it is but would like to squeeze a little more MPG without losing power availability and drivability. Thanks ahead of time. Rick

      It’s been six years lol You mind sharing any feedback and or thoughts for the next weary 09 owner experiencing similar issues? The code I struggle with is small evap leak P0442. One shop thought it was canister purge but comes and goes. Another shop said it shouldn’t effect anything noticeable. The fuel inlet is cleaned regularly using the funnel. I did the fuse relocation kit for fuel pump as I noticed min was showing signs of excessive heat. For some reason when my truck gets to below half a tank it seams more responsive with noticeable acceleration (similar to when you install a new battery and are performing relearn process). Also my ambient air temp reading on the dash is very inconsistent. I’ve seen my barrow numbers and open/closed loop jump around watching live data but i’m still trying to educate myself on reading fuel trims.

    Ford tech. I'm currently getting an intermittent p0420 212k on my 05 no other codes, and does not have anywhere near that low of power. My engine has been more lively. I don't have any other codes. By any chance the cats are just old and in need of a change or something is causing them to fail? I would hate to just throw new cats just to have them come back 6 months to a year later. Your input would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks for your reply your videos are really helpful . I did the mallet thing and also loosened the flange at the manifold and drove it around , It ran worse at low speeds but above 50 it found its legs ! I guess because it forced the pipes apart enough to relieve the back-pressure . I know I cant drive around like that( it sounds like an airplane) but at least I know what the problem is . Thanks again !

    Don't know if you have seen this or not. I haven't had time to check out lal the videos and figures you could point me in the right direction. No sooner than I got my Actuator door replaced than my warnign for LEFT REAR DOOR AJAR came on.... research leads me to believe it coudl be a wireing harness due to faulty design... That said I haven't a clue how to dissasemble and repair. doyou have any videos that demonstrate how to take off a door panel or what not to get to the connecting wire harnes.

    question regarding clogged cat, while looking in the engine of my truck (ford e350 05) I notice that driver side was not as hot as the passenger side, (I was able to touch with my hand and seems just warm, the truck has a misfire and no power, can a clogged cat could cause this?

    • @fernandocamacho5088

      It makes sense if no exhaust gases passing through the cat heating it up, it is going to be cooler than the other cat in which gases are passing through

    Was wondering if you can help me diagnose a problem I'm having. On my way home yesterday, my '05 Expedition 5.4L just stopped accelerating at 20mph and would rev high. Wouldn't go above 20mph in drive, so I had to drive the rest of the way in 2nd gear. Is this a transmission or catalytic converter issue?

    • @chrstphrbrooks
      @chrstphrbrooks 7 лет назад

      gilbert larrasquitu - Transmission was going bad. Had to let it go because apparently there was fuel leaking into the engine as well. Would've cost me over 4 grand to get it fixed here in the D.C. area.

      Christopher Mark I have the exact same problem. Just had phaser lockouts installed along with vacuum assist repaired. Paid the hefty bill, got 2 miles from dealership and experienced the problem.

      @elijahtaboy 6 лет назад

      yeah i had had that on my 97 ford explorer, the spark plug was arcing too the block
      however it still misfires on idle i'm suspecting from what i've watched that it's the catalytic converter. will check tomorrow

    just out of curiosity why only cylinder 5 it seems like it would be multiple cylinders on bank 2.

    • @FordTechMakuloco
      @FordTechMakuloco  9 лет назад +4

      blosom2315 Cylinder 5 is the only one that popped a code being the worst cylinder but multiples were misfiring on acceleration on that bank. You have to remember the gases are collected in a manifold so in essence #5 gases are the last in line to go like a crowd leaving a game and they all have to funnel through the exit door. So the other cylinders may have been able to pass some of the exhaust gases out of the cylinder but then those gases built up pressure in the manifold now there is no chance #5 is getting its gases out therefore they stay in the cylinder and severely dilute the air fuel mixture and misfires ensue.

    Come to Boston on your next tour! I got a 2007 f150 5.4 , truck started shaking at idle after a transmission rebuild, aamco says it’s not transmission or converter, I say bullshit . I know my truck . One day it shakes hot then cold , in Park and neutral one day then reverse and drive the next , it’s nuts , I hear a noise when in park , idle I rev rpm to 2000 and I hear a noise coming form floor . Near converter/flywheel. Any thoughts from anyone?
