@James Masn you are definitely correct but i would like to add one reason for the lack of knowledge. Mechanics do not get paid enough. Anyone who has the mental capacity to do this kind of work could easily go into another industry. They will make more, won't have to take out a mortgage for tools, and won't destroy their body in the process. So from what I see everyone is going to enjoy the shortage of skilled mechanics for the foreseeable future.
@@bobt8578 you are exactly correct! Between the cost of tools, advanced brand specific education, getting paid book time, shop/dealership corruption and a host of other things is why I didn't stay working as an auto mechanic. Many car guys also won't get to be exposed to but so many scenarios and the lack of good pay won't justify staying on the job. There is already a shortage of mechanics in this field because of the reasons I've stated. Sad

Brian, my 2005 F-150 had misfire codes also. My scan tool was just a basic Actron. Nothing like what you have. I replaced plugs and coil packs and it didn't help. this truck had 201800, miles on it. So I took it to the Ford Dealer and asked them to hook it up to there computer and check it out. This truck's engine had oil changes every 3000 miles, give or take 500 miles or so. They said I needed a new engine! I believed them so ten thousand dollars later and four weeks I was back on the road. After watching most of your ford videos' I believe the problem was roller followers! I'll never believe a dealer again. You are the Man! You've also helped me do other repairs on this truck. Next week I'll be replacing a rear ABS sensor, fuel pump module, and oil change on rear pumpkin. Please keep up the Great videos I watch them all the time.
I'm a huge ford guy and a buddy of mine had a 05 mustang gt (4.6 3v), had a dead cylinder for intake and he took the vehicle to 4 different shops that replaced basically everything but still had a misfire. I then told him bring it by. I popped the valve cover and seen a roller popped off, sadly the cam didn't survive. All this knowledge is because of this awesome channel. Thank you bryan.
@GGALLIN1776 I hit a driver door a while ago. Was quoted something like $1,200 to change 4 nuts and an electrical connector in the door jamb. Within 3 minutes on Facebook I found the exact same model car in the exact same paint colour for $600 from Bumper to Bumper the entire car... needless to say he was a little pissy lol

This guy is an amazing mechanic, hands down. I like the way he diagnosed the issue & followed thru with the repair. I just wish his shop was close to my home.
Had an 04 and it was meticulously maintained w Ford oil at Ford garages and it seized oil rings. Gots did a short block on warranty at 149000 kms. Reused all other parts. It ran better but always had a shaky idle. Decided to pull covers and found exact same thing on cylinder 6 a week after I got the truck back from Ford. But a new follower in and switched to amsoil and that motor ran well till 420000kms when I totaled the truck

Thanks again Ford Tech - God has given you a gift of knowledge and experience. I worked auto for a while then I went into Aircraft Maintenance for 31 years. But I still have a love of auto maintenance and love watching your videos and I still have a love for learning. Never too old to learn.
I have this exactly problem and I think you must've just solved our problem because we have a misfire after new premium coils and plugs were installed and couldn't find the problem. Plus I have a coolant leak that's hard to find
First time watching you I am a Ford Tech myself started to struggle with this misfire watched your video led me right to the number 3 rocker arm... fell off after grinding on the camshaft
Well I have a Ford F150 that has been looked at by the so called good mechanics around here they have no idea.. One said co2 censor and I was thinking catalytic converter... Well when slowing down from 60 or so to a complete stop it starts to how do you explain it... Ummm almost like the timing is off but also a loud rattling.. Shut the engine off and start it back up and it's fine would love to fix this problem have you ever heard of this before... Hopefully the intake roller follower could be my ticket...
I don't own domestic vehicles but if I ever move to Chicagoland, I'm buying a Ford knowing Brian the Meister is in town no matter what he charges! The best is worth it.
I’m having the same problem I got two codes cam sensor and a 7 misfire. I pulled the valve cover and the roller follower appear okay but I’m going to pulls the cam to check them better but I have been loving your videos thanks
Awesome! I'm going to do my timing chains, VCT, Phasers, water pump, Melling Oil Pump, and a full set of roller followers this weekend! I have 180k on my '06 and when I inquired at my local garage they said I needed a new engine because the "Rear" timing chains on this engine required the engine to be pulled anyway. Wow! I certainly wasn't going to let them work on my truck! Thanks to your inspiration, I think this is going to go well!
Great job once again. Your awesome! You should write a book with all the tips and tricks for the 5.4L and sell it to the other mechanics. I would definitely buy it.
Had the exact same problem happened to me but on a 2006 3.7L Dodge Ram very hard to find problem changed everything from injector, to plugs, coils and problem was still there! Until I opened it up and sure thing the roller had popped out!!. Really enjoy your videos a lot of great info in them. Thanks 👍🏽
They can't though. They've read through the paragraphs, answered yes or no when the book asked. That's it, that's all the tech can do. By the way, the last step in the Ford service/troubleshooting manual is ALWAYS, replace PCM.
@@FixItStupid same, techs are such good little bolter on of parts guys so spiffy in their little uniforms and gloves. Seen some insane bills from the little red seal basterds an still not fixed. Once you figure it out it's always simple tho love that part.
@@zachcoldwell7978 I know. All manufacturers seem to operate the same way. But it's almost never the PCM. I always tell the tech he has to pay for the PCM if it doesn't fix the car. That's usually when they go find the real problem.
Many techs today are what I call a JAFI ... Just Another F###ing Installer. Manufacturers use to make it so things could be rebuilt. Now it's mostly one time use components.
I've come upon this same situation about 3 times. Have also seen it on cylinder 3. Replaced cam, timing set and roller rockers. Just had another 07 three valve come in 3 days ago. Looks at cam error pids and seen the common right bank that always goes out at -14. Inspected with bore scope into oil fill and found the common right chain guide gone due to blown gasket on tensioner. Timing set definitely needed. Removed the easier left cover and found the left guide broken. The engine was oil starved for many seasons. Everything was nasty under the valve cover. My recommendation was getting a remanufactured engine. Great video for those people that don't understand Fords. Thanks
Subscribed not to long ago. Was a ford dealer tech for 17 years. Left just before the ecoboost. Went heavyduty. I see issues with for ford are still nonstop lol. Great to see someone like Brian trying to help ford owners save some money. Reasons I don't own a ford today haha. Sure takes me back when I was slugging away in the Ford shop, trying to make 100% efficiency numbers or better.
Fantastic video. Wish I'd watched it earlier... After replacing a spark plug, coil, and injector, we still couldn't figure out why we were seeing a misfire on a cylinder, and this turned out to be why!
Great video! Thank you for such a detailed video!! We sell the coils for these trucks. Very occasionally we have a customer with a Ford Triton engine that has a misfire that no shop can diagnose. I will be forwarding your videos to customers who need in depth information on misfires!
This just happened to my 08 Expedition 155k miles. Replaced all roller followers and cams and did timing, oil pump and vct valves as well. Drives like new!
Thank u . Ur the most honestly best f150 Ford advice I ever seen, ur integrity is enough to watch and I ant kidding man, ur attitude is so real and I hope you the best of luck with your ford
If I would have been close enough to your shop like this guy is there's NOOOOOOO way I'd bring the truck to anyone else! Damn man get woke! Brian is the best dude!!!
Once again you show how important proper diagnosis is. I know the vehicle owner spent hundreds of dollars for nothing but in the end you will fix it and it will be just fine.
So glad I found your channel. I've got a 2008 F150 Harley Davidson Saleen Supercharged with just over 60K. I've got to replace the passenger side exhaust manifold and your vid is going to be a huge help to me. Thanks again for all of the 5.4 information.
Got an 07 5.4 3v. Have had it about a year. This whole story sounds like mine. With one exception. We just did the valve cover gaskets and didn't see anything broken or popped off. However it has recently started breaking the tips off of the spark plugs in the last 2months. #6 first then #8. All coil packs(1month old), all plugs (twice now 1yr & 1 month)), all injectors(1yr), both VVT solenoids(1month), PCV hoses replaced(1month). Only code I get regularly is lean cats. The shop told me cats were good. It will run good right after new parts for about ,60miles. Then back to hiccuping. I'm at my wits end with this thing. Going to do a compression test, before doing anything else. You're not by chance near Mississippi are you?
Amazing troubleshooting skills! So sad so many people are simply parts swappers these days. It's the same for fixing electronics... I love how you always clearly show how to use the tools at your disposal to properly identify a problem first before replacing parts.
Just for knowing,,,,, how much will this job cost this customer? I was very impressed with you diagnostics abilities. Maybe I should take my 2012 Shelby GT500 for you to maintain for me. Where are you located. I’m in south Florida.
This is why your the best....It definitely happen to me on my 05 mustang 3v, I lucky found it was I was diagnosing, laying in the head, the only thing I think could have happened was it was revd' in park at high rpm's....
The very first 5.4L I ever worked on had a misfire that completely perplexed us. I can't remember the milage or the year of the truck but it passed all the traditional tests so we were sure it was computer related. I'm not sure why but I stripped everything out of the right side of the truck and pulled the valve cover and WOW! A rocker arm gone rogue. My mind was blown. Little did I know how much trouble these engines would be down the road with seized spark plugs, cam phasers, VVT oil pressure valves, etc. I still wonder why an engine can be so disastrous and still have such a loyal following. I get a pain in the guts thinking about them.
Great video! Thank you! I’m pretty sure mine is just an exhaust leak because it goes away almost entirely when the timing changes during warm up. I am getting a P0300 every now and then and I can feel the miss when under load but I believe it’s just a bad coil boot. My engine only has 112,000 on it. I maintain the oil like clockwork. It’s important in these engines. Otherwise they are prone to a lot of problems.
Our 2nd vehicle is a 99 Eddie Bauer Expdie with 280k. That thing is a beast. Plenty of maintenance over the years but here we are with a vehicle we can still trust. 🤷🏼♀️

I learned my lesson in my 2010 4.6 with a hard to diagnose misfire. I had a miss fire replaced a bunch of things. A few weeks later I heard a pop them rattle. The follower had seized and popped off. Messed up the cam and dropped a valve in cylinder 4. That was an expensive misfire. Haha

Your videos are truly an encyclopedia of Engine Repair. I am on the market for this type of vehicle this year 2020. Keep up the good work!!!!
Thanks again Ford Tech - God has given you a gift of knowledge and experience. I worked auto for a while then I went into Aircraft Maintenance for 31 years. But I still have a love of auto maintenance and love watching your videos and I still have a love for learning. Never too old to learn.
Nice job, I was a service writer for Ford, love it when I had mechanics that had great diagnosis skills like you!!!!! Made my life much better.
You are the man!!! Great diagnosis, I really enjoy the content.
I’m having the same problem I got two codes cam sensor and a 7 misfire. I pulled the valve cover and the roller follower appear okay but I’m going to pulls the cam to check them better but I have been loving your videos thanks
good job bryan nice to work on same brands continualy see the common failures alot..
Thanks 👍🏽
Any time a technician tells me the PCM is bad I tell them to go find something else wrong. It's 99% of the time NOT a PCM problem.
They can't though. They've read through the paragraphs, answered yes or no when the book asked. That's it, that's all the tech can do. By the way, the last step in the Ford service/troubleshooting manual is ALWAYS, replace PCM.
@@zachcoldwell7978 LOL The Book & Cant Think....... Seen Many Time
@@FixItStupid same, techs are such good little bolter on of parts guys so spiffy in their little uniforms and gloves.
Thanks
Brian your the man. Been knocking out the projects on my F-150 this summer with your videos. Much love !!
Your experience has paid off for the customer, great video 👍😁
This dude is sharp. Great analysis and troubleshooting, I'm learning a ton.
That reveal was more exciting and tense than the Cyber truck reveal. More satisfying, too
Fantastic video. Wish I'd watched it earlier... After replacing a spark plug, coil, and injector, we still couldn't figure out why we were seeing a misfire on a cylinder, and this turned out to be why!
Thank you for these videos especially on the 5.4 3V I fixed a lot of stuff myself just by watching your videos
This is why working in this field is critical,, people in the know are invaluable!
Where's the 1000 like button so I can smash it.
Great diag as always .
wow , a compression test would have fooled me. I think i learned something very important and new today. Thanks for the tip!!
Check out that awesome maintenance, Clean motor!
These engine respond well to maintenance. Besides the phasers, and exhaust manis. They really don’t give many headaches if you maintain them properly.
Thank u . Ur the most honestly best f150 Ford advice I ever seen, ur integrity is enough to watch and I ant kidding man, ur attitude is so real and I hope you the best of luck with your ford
It’s amazing how shops miss simple things like this.
If I would have been close enough to your shop like this guy is there's NOOOOOOO way I'd bring the truck to anyone else! Damn man get woke! Brian is the best dude!!!
I feel like 95% of the shops out there are just glorified parts changers that hope for the best
or less.
Once again you show how important proper diagnosis is. I know the vehicle owner spent hundreds of dollars for nothing but in the end you will fix it and it will be just fine.
This was my exact issue and why I sold our Expedition.
How many miles on the expedition when this happened?
The best Ford technician. Period.
always Awesome Man ! .. Thank you for all the help u do .
So glad I found your channel. I've got a 2008 F150 Harley Davidson Saleen Supercharged with just over 60K. I've got to replace the passenger side exhaust manifold and your vid is going to be a huge help to me. Thanks again for all of the 5.4 information.
Slap some headers on that bad boy while you're in there!
Thanks for awsome info genius.
Owning a FORD eventually makes you a pretty good mechanic. Lol
Yeah but owning a Chevy or dodge usually makes you bitter
Amazing troubleshooting skills! So sad so many people are simply parts swappers these days. It's the same for fixing electronics... I love how you always clearly show how to use the tools at your disposal to properly identify a problem first before replacing parts.
Now it makes it harder to sell the complete job, because the customer has been milked out of thousands for misdiagnosed repairs.
100% correct, our policy is, if we are wrong, there is no charge.
Just for knowing,,,,, how much will this job cost this customer? I was very impressed with you diagnostics abilities. Maybe I should take my 2012 Shelby GT500 for you to maintain for me. Where are you located. I’m in south Florida.
@@mosesvega5421 he is In the Chicago area. Sounds like a fun road trip.
Thousands?
See 4 in the last year..... Brian thank you because of your videos, I have been Mr Captain save a truck... again thank you for your time
This is why your the best....It definitely happen to me on my 05 mustang 3v, I lucky found it was I was diagnosing, laying in the head, the only thing I think could have happened was it was revd' in park at high rpm's....
FordTechmekeyouloco is the Ford horse whisperer.
One of the main reasons I got out of the business...too many hack garages that replace parts, give great mechanics a bad name!
7:50 Who saw it? Be honest...
May I ask what was it?
Our 2nd vehicle is a 99 Eddie Bauer Expdie with 280k. That thing is a beast. Plenty of maintenance over the years but here we are with a vehicle we can still trust. 🤷🏼♀️
Customer is due a few refunds from these backyard mechanics. 💩
With an ‘09 with this motor, I love the diagnosis. Only have 170k miles, so I will be looking for this after another decade hopefully.
Thanks!
You are the best Ford /overall mechanic I’ve ever seen bad to the bone and a genius Dude !!!!
Mil y muchas grasias estimado apreciado ESPECIALISTA,es uno de los especialistas mas sinceros y claros en su explicacion en EEUU realmente es un tesoro tener personas asi de esa caracteristica

Haha
