What causes a misfire on all cylinders can't find a vacuum leak and replace mass air flow sensor and they don't misfire on all cylinders all time it comes and goes my number is 239 234 9495 ty
FordTechMakuloco hello friend sorry where you have your workshop I would like you to work on my Ford f150 2007 I really like your videos I live in texas I have problems in the engine
I have a 2007 expedition 5.4 3v and at around 35- 40mph It stutters and shanks. If I take my foot off the gas pedal or apply more gas pedal beyond 40mph it goes away any ideas how to fix this? ...I have also replaced spark plugs and coils still did not fix it
I’m in the Ford ASSET program. As I go through our units I always watch the videos you make. Always helps me understand what we’re doing in class better. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. It’s made an impact on my understanding
Man you are a life saver. Im a disabled veteran and live on a tight budget. I can't afford to pay a shop to have my vehicle wrenched on. You have honestly help save me thousands of $$$ between my own personal vehicles and also my parents which I also take care of. Thanks so much for the knowledge you share man it is greatly appreciated. I know your busy and you probably sometimes think about the hassle of doing this and literally giving away your hard earned expertise but to some of us man you are a godsend. Thanks so much.
Same here . Iam a very grateful dad with kids. We are currently a 1 income family . You have saved my family thousands. I stay on the road and go to work thanks you you and your helpful insight. GOD SENT.
Add me to that same long list. I also live on a tight budget with two teenage boys and a wife that is disabled. Can't afford another vehicle and no way I could afford to take my truck to the dealer. He has helped me save so much money it's unbelievable. He's so good at what he does. SUPPER SKILLS !!!! Awesome man !!!!
Ronald Morris Get a Actron CP9680 Code tester. It checks live, record, graphing, transmission codes, emission readiness test, ABS, SRS, and MORE! Get 4 aaa batteries for under the rear cover. EBAY has it.
This video really shows the importance of having a solid knowledge base (find a place to get the info- ask around if you need to) in your personal toolbox to help it all make sense and doing a thorough job of diagnostic testing. Don't give up and don't stop looking until it's right. Great Job Brian! You always share awesome videos!
Awesome its nice to see a mechanic with those trouble shooting skills get to the problem without being a parts changer, your customers are very lucky to have a trusted mechanic.
This kind of real time diagnostic video is an outstanding learning experience. Even though I do have access to a scope, your workflow allowing you to avoid using it is even better.
Great JOB finding that injector leak! You are a fantastic mechanic. I recently subscribed to your channel to continue learning more about automotive repairs. I've been in the industry for many years now, but most guys stop learning after spending several thousands of dollars on tools. A good mechanic never knows it all. We learn from others as well. Thank you, for putting your experience on RUclips! You're a neat guy who can teach mechanics a lot about diagnosis and, the how too process of auto repair. You RAWK Mr. Makuloco! Great to watch your abilities at work! A++
Quality youtube videos like yours is helping me get back into auto repair after being a marine mechanic for 35 years, you starve in the winter and do ok in the summer. You have to cull through the garbage to find good techs like yourself, and I have added you to my subscriptions. I have a 2006 F150 4.6 with a low idle misfire and was able to pinpoint it after watching your video. Thanks
Thanks for all your videos, helps me keep my 05 f150 going after 251,000m, I'm having the same issue with rough idle, going to have to check into it more, thanks again!
Man, I'm far from competent working on vehicles. Most of the video you might as well have been speaking an alien language. But your thoroughness allowed me to follow along just well enough that I was able to learn a lot of shit I hadn't even intended to... Some people are superstars at their craft, others might be superstars at just teaching and educating others. Man, I suspect you're both. Thanks homie, really informative video. I'm subscribing.
I just bought a 2005 Expedition XLT 4x4 because of your videos, so I don't have to drive my 2001 SVT Cobra in the winter. 127k miles, I got it for $1000 due to "engine noise" and a power steering leak. Your videos helped me diagnose the engine noise, the Cam Phaser. And once I get the cash I'll be fixing it with the help of your videos. I'd LOVE some videos on the 4.6L DOHC 4-valve SVT Cobra engines if you ever work on one.
I'm so glad you are here. I'm no wrench, but manage to keep a 2002 Focus and a 1998 F150 going. You know that 's a lot of repairs! I only wish you would have followed thru with the repair of this truck. It would have been cool to see you have this truck running smooth again! There are a lot of guys like me that know NOTHING, but manage to keep our heads just above the water with the empowerment that guys like you make possible. Now I'll have to find a video on R/R fuel injector. I just wish you had a box for me to type my issue and have your relative videos come up. It's not good to have to go thru the many, many, (THANKS!) videos hoping to find the one for me. Sometimes I don't see it at all, then find it with a search engine, and wonder why I couldn't find it on your site. Probably something I'm doing wrong. God bless you!
The best video in the history of misfiring known cylinder and even showing how to diagnose a misfire if unknown cylinder. As soon as you said it made a hooting noise, I knew it was the o ring. I have seen thst before on a client self replacement.
There may be other channels that go in-depth as much as this one, but I haven't found them. This is awesome. My mechanic did timing chain, guide, tensioner AND phase sprocket replacement for what turned out to be a semi-clogged bank 1 cat. Veh had 148k so at least I know I have new timing chains, but $600 would have fixed it instead of almost $2k. ('07 Exp EL)
Time for a new mechanic that dosnt just throw parts at a vechicle on your dime. New timing chains are not a bad thing but when u put them in to fix a problem u better be damn sure they are causing that problem. There are plenty of ways to verify timing without guessing and if he has a shop he should know this. Anyways at least u havea good attitude for u. If it was me assuming i didnt do my own repairs id be livid.
Hey Brian, you are the best teacher here on YT, thank you for all you do. Have you ever worked on 2015-2017 Transits? YT really could use your expertise regarding the guibo driveshaft recall, rear brake issues as well as cowl/air box water leaks and a few other minor fit/finish issues on these vans. I hope to see one on your channel someday. Transits are the best cargo vans out there for the money right now and good information is hard to find. Go Ford!
Great video on proper engine diagnostics using the right pids and proper test the scan tool has available. A bad injector oring will definitely make a misfire and cause a severe lean condition. Wish the 2007 ford f150 that gave me a rough time was something like a oring. I ended up finding the intake manifold melted one cylinder one port due to a weak exhaust valve spring. Great video to remind all to follow proper diagnostics.
Great troubleshooting funnel aproach ! The PID "Power Balance" is fantastic to narrow down the Cyl.4 "Leak down test" by software is a super smart time saver. Before figuring the injector seal I would have swapped the spark plug with known good Cyl.1 Loved the whole suspense and a great final win ! 🤗
Oh you found my truck. I had a 2011 F 150 with this engine. Cold startup and run rough. Only about 1 year old. Warm up and be ok. I figured choke was sticking. Dealership wanted me to leave it overnight. I changed dealerships. I got rid of the dog. But tell you. Been through 3 dealerships, their all dogs. Next F150 seatbelt went bad on driver side. Next 2016 150 vehicle back seat electric window was bad. This one has 5. engine and I give it the gas the other day and it hesitated. I only have 7000 miles on it. If keep a vehicle, I change batteries every 2 years. Thanks for video. I'm retired and don't do stuff mechanic anymore. Love to see you young guys take over this electronic stuff. I never used flex fuel. It's dog crap. Government paying gas companies to use corn oil is disgusting. I worked on helicopters. I worked on turbine engines and receps. On the recep engines, we had a choice between an AC General Motors plug versus Motorola plug. Guess what? AC plugs were dogs. Regards...
Fastestinthewest Choke was sticking? On a 2011 f150 with fuel injection? Not possible. They needed you to leave it overnight so they can start it up cold to try and duplicate the issue. Why would you be silly and keep buying ford vehicles if you don't like the dealerships and you can't handle simple problems that arise as an owner? Reguardless every vehicle in this world new or old will have an issue at some point. Get used to it
reweydewy Good points. I owned a a brand new GMC in 2007. Had some of those little side deals. Took it to the dealer for an oil change. Remember the GMC disaster. The dealer was closed. Closed forever. I also lost about $25,000 worth of GM stock. Before that I owned a new Chevrolet, I took that truck to the dealer and left it overnight with a bad shock. I went back the next evening and I was told they couldn't fix it. Didn't have the part. I talked to my salesman and he was great. I've seen a lot of dealers. I live in the huge Dallas-Fort Worth area. So there is not a lack of dealerships. I laughed when you talked about the non-choke. Regards...
I wish all mechanics were like you bro love this videos going all out to see what's the real problem I've been dealing with this kind of situations for over a year and can't get it to work properly always that misfire some times the truck feels real light and super fast and there's days it seems like if I got my foot on the brake so dog on slow. I changed the mass air sensor, coil pack some vacuum hoses.and still getting codes P1744,P0743,and P0133 and its 1999 Ford F150 lightning truck.
Great videos. Too bad you aren't in my town! Nobody can figure out my problem. Misfire 3 and 5 on a 2001, 6.8 V10. 177,000. New plugs, two calvan inserts, coils and connectors, replaced one stuck open lifter on #3. I gave up and put it up for sale. I'm still watching your videos. Ive got an F-250 too. Thanks.
Man... I heard that beeping before and had no idea what it was... Now I have two 0451s, an 0600 and a 060A... With 129,000 on it, I'm sure this is a good start to look at replacing original parts... Thanks for video... I look for yours first for these "technicalities"...
Had a cyl 3 misfire right after changing out a lifter follower. Then the next day num 2 misfire then a few days later 4. I did change them right after I started to have a misfire. Well changed all spark plugs and runs great.
I really got caught up in your video as you followed the problem to the last, smallest detail...I honestly thought it was the what looked like a Champion ( porcelain fell on mine) plug you had there in your hand...lo and behold it was the o ring on the injector.Nice job..really enjoy your videos.
Brian keep it up and thank you for all of the precise descriptive information! I have replaced phasers cam tensioners oil pump ect ect and used your videos and been very successful. I am currently troubleshooting a strange cylinder #5 misfire I have replaced plug / swapped cops and injector s from other cylinders. However the misfire persists on#5 and appears to be worse when cold. The misfire is only present at idle and the engine immediately smooths when gas is applied. When warm or with the AC on the idle is smoother but misfire is still detectable to the mechanically minded. Mode 6 data shows about 5 - 25 misfires a minute at idle. 0 when above idle or cruising down the road. I have sprayed carb cleaner around the plug / manifold but don't notice a change however I'm not sure I would if there is already a miss I will pick up some starting fluid and see if that does anything. When cruising this truck runs fantastic. I know your busy but if you have any thoughts or suggestions I would absolutely love to hear your thoughts. Thanks again for the great videos!!!
Josh I just had a brand new motor installed and I am having the exact same issue, not sure what cylinder is misfiring cause I don't have any scan tools but if you find out please let me know
I have a 2010 f150 flex fuel 5.4 and my engine shakes sometimes after it warms up. I had a shop replace all the plugs and they replaced one coil pack saying that was the issue. When I got it back, the problem continued. I don't want to continue paying the shop for misdiagnosing my truck, what are you thoughts? Thanks
One of my main tools for detecting misfires a spray bottle of H20. You'll be surprised what you can do with a little H20! BTW Brian Great video! I don't get the thumbs down though. SMH
Definitely has a leaking exhaust manifold and that can skew the O2’s. And ford dripped the ball when they designed the coil/boot on the 3v. Always had to use a long pick and vacuum or air to clean out the tube.
04 F150 5.4 3v. My truck only has 3k on it and it started running like a misfire and now has no spark. A little history: complete teardown and rebuild with new pistons valves rollers , all new sensors, plugs, coils everything. The truck ran perfect for 3k miles or so. Ford told me it was the pcm so I bought a new pcm programmed for my Vin and still the same problem. I have removed the harness and checked all the wires for breaks shorts ect. I have checked the crank signal at the pcm and it is good according to Ford specs ( thanks). New temp sensor and power steering pressure sensor as I heard they can effect the pcm firing (not 100% sure though). On my computer I have no codes and I have rpm signal, coolant temp, power steering pressure signal and according to my computer the crank and cam signals are in sync. I have injector pulse ( checked with noid light all 8 cyl's). I have 12 volts on the coils with no negative trigger coming in. I have checked and cleaned all 4 grounds in the engine bay and the grounds inside by the fuse box and on the drivers side under the kick panel. New fuel pump and module and I am getting correct fuel pressure and signal from module. I used the newer Dorman cam phasers when I built the engine but I would think if one failed internally the cam and crank would not be in sync. Any suggestions on what other signal is required by the pcm to fire. There has to be a signal from somewhere that is wrong or missing to the pcm that is not letting it fire. Could there possibly be an issue with the cluster not feeding a signal it needs? I am going nuts the last 4 months trying to pin point this truck. Thanks in advance for you suggestions.
Good video man. I've done so much 3v troubleshooting this year. I've gotten in these situations many times. Sometimes easy sometimes hard. Had a guy bring me one that Ford did. Plug change. They broke a plug off at the very top of the threads. It was very hard to remove without pulling head and not damage the threads
@@stephentresca3536 I noticed oil in my 1st cylinder spark plug hole but I believe it was just from me overfilling oil funnel previously? Don’t think the boots seal out liquids that well not sure what else it could be
I'm definitely going to check my injector is seating all the way. I'm still getting a missfire on cylider #1 even after swapping #1 injectors but I noticed afterward #1 injector keeper clip that holds it actually touches the top of the intake manifold, possibly its not seating fully. Also, I found a post in the Ford forums where a guy discovered his #4 missfire was caused by #5 injector burning the #5 plug way down, with just enough plug left on #4 at idle but at higher rpm the spark would jump to the head and since #5 was next in firing order is must have been cross jumping. At least this is what he stated. So his misfire on 5 was fixed by replacing the sticking injector on #4. My misfire is on #1 and I did notice my #4 plug was really wore down as well as #1. Hope I get this figured out. I do have the 05 f150 5.4 3v and I think it has the original injectors that had the recall due to sticking open or closed. The following is printed on them (ford 5c3e-db 044/05) Can someone verify if that is the original injector for 05? I'm about ready to replace them all with Motorcraft Cm5138. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it. Already installed all new plugs motorcraft sp546x,standard ignition bluestreak coilpacks FD508, motocraft fuel filter(was super dirty on take side..like rusty mud), Things is have in mind to try next is 1. Pull new plugs to see if they are burnt up, not seated properly, if look good on both then swap #2 plug &coilpack with #1 see if miss follows to #2. If any truth to the above story about #4 sticking injector causing a #5 miss, makes me want to pull # 8 plug to inspect and of bad again change all injectors with Motorcraft Cm5138. Does this sound like a logical approach?
I want to thank you so much for doing these videos man. I've got a 2008 Escape that I adore, 220k miles and never had a major problem with it, don't want to let it go. I've got a 2014 Focus also, that one on the other hand, they screwed me on it. I realize it's a manual transmission controlled by computer and I expect it to feel like a manual but mine continues to need seals and clutches. Don't know how you feel about it but I say it's a dud.
2005 ford mustang 230k miles just starting to have shaking and studering when coming to a stop i believe it is cam shift position sensor thats the code but im starting to lean more to vct stick overheating and low power after driving for a while what are your thoughts and thank you for all the information on these motors
just used the relative compression and injector flow test today on an 06 f150 with a misfire. but it wasnt with the ids just a snap on scanner. makes it quick to pick a direction for the misfire. the ids looks nicer but they do the same thing. good video
Man thanks for your time Dude!! With great people like I myself save lots of money 💰💰 by fixing my truck. Today I changed my coils so I didn't change sparkplugs because a mechanic changed for me 6 months ago and cost me $740.
I had a miss fire the other day and none of the tec data said which way was the front of the engine for firing order ,and you told us in this video, too bad i didn't see this first.mine was strange.running perfect ,cold ac, drove 20 min. shut it off.came back out after 30 min.started it, right off running ruff and blowing hot air ,no blown fuses, then check engine comes on, po358,fine ,bad coil, fixed it ,but still no ac,we got it down to climate control was not turning on blower relay, tried another ,wont work, tried it in another identical truck, and it took about a minute be for the control to function,it started the blower,WHAT THE HECK, PUT IT BACK IN MINE, AC THEN WORKS. INSANE!!!!!
I haveca problem with my 2010 ford f150 5.4... it was missing so i took it in to get looked and they said i need a new emgine but couldnt tell me why...they just said it was internal...the truck would start up fine and idle great untill you pit a load on it ...then it would shake and miss and sometimes cut off but start right back up.... ive watched all your videos with things it could have been....ived changed phasers, vtc, position sensors, tensioner arms, tensioners, guides, oil pump amd all the plugs....put the front of the motor back together and it started right up...idled great for 30 minutes while we checked things over...took it or a ride and rode great for like 2 minutes and then started shaking and running rough...went up a hill and lost power and it cut off and wouldnt start until the next day...started up drove it around the neighborhood it was runninng.. rough cut out in the driveway and now it wont start at all..it will crank but not fire...PLEASE HELP ME...this truck has been driving me nuts....
I use your videos like pinpoint tests. But what is up with the valve covers rotting away? I've had to do some shade tree engineering to keep the coils down.
This is awesome, thank you. When you have time to reply please.... I am looking at a 2005 F-150 5.4L Triton at a dealer. it might have been sitting for a few months and not been touched. I test drove and check engine light flashes when accelerating along with a TERRIBLE, almost constant, shaking. I press down on the pedal while driving about 55 and it struggles to accelerate. I think it is a combination of old gas and a need of new spark plugs, wires, and coil packs. Maybe even fuel injectors. Waiting for them to find out what code shows up. Seems like a steady, fine idle though. I know this is hard to tell without you driving and seeing the truck, but would you say that is a solid guess? I don't think it is deeper engine, transmission, or driveshaft issue...but would hate to get the truck and replace all that and end up having engine or transmission problems. Might just pass it up. Seems to shift gears fine. But noticed after it shifts, it shakes a little more. Thank you!
They found code P0303 cylinder 3 misfire. I would want to just replace all spark plugs, wires, and coil packs and that should do the trick. It shakes so bad though, curious if something else is wrong.
Great Video! I got a 2006 F150 king ranch with the 5.4L3v completely rebuilt twice and have multiple issues. I could probably drive it to your garage. I need someone like you to look over my engine, are you close to West Virginia?
i have a quick question. i am having kinda same problem with my 08 f350 v10 gas. i bought it with no oil pressure issue. opened it up and replaced the oil pump and the timing chain since i was right there. after putting it together i noticed that 1 side bank 1 was not running/working. i do have oil pressure now. any changes you may be able to assist. Thanks
That IDS is an impressive diagnostic tool. Of course, it's only a tool. Skill required to complete the diagnosis and repair, which you have plenty of Brian! 👍🏻 Btw, how's the Ram 1500? Are you still happy with it?
Enjoy your info. Sure wish you lived closer to Norfolk Va. I have a 05 F-250 5.4L 3v was told it jumped time. they wanted to replace the motor with 170K on it. it runs good but will not idle. Feel Im being played for big bucks. Truck is still sitting in my drive way.
I love this. The engine, not so much. But damn do i know more about her😉😏🤤 188,500 mi 5.4 3 supercab 2 tone. I've seen her rear dif, new plugs not sure about her coils but on to do list,, changed pinion seal, new front-end. Now she hollers at +45mph. She goes in for diagnosis in the AM. Thank you for the knowledge as I feel more comfortable with lil Tonka truck😆 best teacher!
Hi Brian, I have exactly same issue with cylinder 4, I own 2011 expedition and I went crazy visiting a lot of work shops without solving the problem. Thank you for sharing this video. But in my case, I tried to exchange injectors between 3 and 4 and I got same faulty reading, do you think both are damaged?
Love all your videos....I just got a 2005 Lincoln navigator 5.4L 150k miles. I was detailing the engine, I noticed 3 coils 2 left 1 right side of the engine without the screws, I pulled the coils out, there is nothing to screw on. The piece is broken in half. It is any fix for that without replacing the valve covers??? I am not experiencing any problem driving it so far.
Had the same sort of thing happen to me after doing chains and phasers. Skip about made me lose my mind thinking i was gonna have to tear back down. Number 4 coil driver at the pcm wasnt working. Talk about second guessing my work! Jeeze!
Good video. Ever get a misfire reading for a cylinder then when you start working it looks fine, could it be coming from a different cylinder? Or will a reader always read correctly. In a similar situation. Monster headache.
I’m a ford guy and have heard so many bad things about this 5.4 ………. Well I bought a 08 with the 5.4…… it is very clear to me those weren’t just nasty rumours I was hearing about the 5.4, see I did my spark plugs and buggered up my cylinder 4 fuel injector plug, the plug from the wiring harness fell apart, is the something we can do to to soften up these plastic plugs so they are not so brittle?
Brian I'm stumped. Working on the same exact year and model 5.4 but mine had the older style plugs and coils(2007) engine with 100000 miles. Went back with the champion one piece plugs. Had a po306 code and a random misfire code. Number 6 injector was stuck open. Installed new injector, all plugs, 4 coils on bank two. Had a dirty fuel filter with rust. Cleaned other seven injectors before installing fuel rail. When cold startup shows no codes. But after it warms up under load I get a p2198. Checked o2 sensor and heater side was good. Had 12 volts feeding in with key on. My short term fuel trims are running around -22 on bank two and -2 on right. Lt trims are both 0.0 at idle. MAF is around 1.47 running and 0.00 with just key on. REL FRP 40-41 at idle. BARO 18.6. Both cats running 963 degrees. Dead miss at idle and smooths out around 2000 rpm. Put it in gear it worse as well when it gets warmed up. Any ideas? I'm using an Actron cp9660.
Todd Gish honestly just stick to the motorcraft plugs. Any other brand doesn't work. I've tried autolites, ngk, And Bosch. Somehow my engine just doesn't like them. Went and got the motorcraft one's. The engine runs like new
Gabe Lopez , yeah I've heard people saying the same. I took all of the plugs out of bank two today and they were all black. Bank one was good and clean. Going to try unplugging the vct harnesses tomorrow and check those. Sticking vct could actually be my problem.
Todd Gish does the truck make a clunking sound on start up and idle ? It could be bad vct my dad's is bad haven't opened her up but going to change vct and timing chains all around but no engine codes whatsoever
Gabe Lopez when cold it has just a slight miss when idling back down its more noticeable. When it warms up and try power braking it then shut it off it will show the p2198, which is the o2 sensor stuck Rich on bank two, sensor one. While in park it's not so bad but it gets worse in drive no power and when you stop it will try to die. Has the dieseling and pinging so sounds like vct to me since I found Brian's video on that topic.
Todd Gish sounds like it change the plugs to motorcraft and double check the gap on them. Could be that the champs aren't burning the fuel completely it happened to me id get either lean codes or too rich and I changed the plugs and it went away
I have a 4.6 2v 08 and am trying to correctly connect coils. There appears to be an extra 4 wire connection on passenger side. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Love your no nonsense videos.
Good find Brian. Make sure to tell the customer though that friends don't let friends use Exide batteries. I realize everyone battery company makes a dud once in awhile, but their quality is horrible.
Man my f150 is torturing me right now im really hoping that your videos can help. It misfires at such weird times and has that diesel sound with the ticking and surprise its the 5.4. I love the truck but idk what the hell to do
Hi Brian, I'm trying to find your video of solution fix 5.4 3v where you found *wiring harness* too close and causing ** mystery misfires** can you direct or help me, would help so so much and very appreciated
Hey man I love the content, I have a 5.4 3v that has P0325 knock sensor code. I just replaced the plugs with the help of your videos (no broken plugs) it ran great for a day or two but ,now I have a check engine light. Do I need to replace the knock sensor?
I have a 01 f150 with a 5.4. While driving the truck while not accelerate and eventually will turn off. After a couple of minutes I turn the truck back on and it works fine. Don’t know what it could be. Any suggestions of what can cause this problem
Amazing! Great tips and diagnostics. Damn you know these Fords so well and how to use the scanner. I watch your videos even though I don't have or will have a Ford. Thanks so much for doing the videos!
Had two in a row that had bad CHT Harness. As they spend $800.00 trying to fix their AC. I told them the AC does not work if the CHT is bad. Big clue. The temp gauge stays on Cold even when running...It was reading 55 degrees..
I have an 08 5.4 3v and cylinders 7, 8 are still misfiring after replacing plugs (Motorcraft) and coils but coils are not Ford (Duralast) I wonder if I have issues with injectors or if I need to buy Ford coils 🤔
I have a 2003 Ford E350. We have tested the engine errors and got a misfiring in spark plug #4. We have changed the coil and spark plug two or three times and I found online that there is broken leaky hose that passes on top of that particular spark plug #4. What hose is it? How doest it call? how can we replace it? Thank you very much.
I have an 03 Expedition with 5.4 2v. Replaced the long block 12k miles ago and put new 02 sensors, fuel filter, plugs. I recently filled up and put 6 oz of Lucas upper cylinder treatment in with 25 gallons 87 octane. Now I’m getting P0301 even after replacing plug and coil. Could it be that the cylinder 1 injector is clogged and needs replacing?
22:55 you mention the PCM may disable the circuit? How do you re-enable it? just clear the code? HAving a hell of a time with a 05 5,4 3v 1,2,5,6 misfire... Replaced plugs, coils, even connectors because of broken tabs. The power balance hasn't changed at all... I'm stumped
Question on a 2007 Lincoln MarkLT we believe heater core went out just from smell and leaking passenger side of vehicle. I is there an easy way to get to heater core or does everything have to be stripped out.
I changed my plugs on my truck... put everything back together and now the truck is misfiring. I drove my truck over to the Oreilys to get a code check i code barely drive at 40 MPH without my engine shaking like an earth quake. It pulled a code saying that the 6th cylinder coil pack was bad. I replaced it and the same thing. Not to mention I added so fuel cleaner into the tank when I stopped to get gas. Any thoughts on what it could be? I didn’t check the spark plug gaps before I put them in, they were pre gapped. It is a 2010 5.4 f150 flex fuel.
Good video. This engine is a royal pain in the ass. Had the dreaded cylinder 4 misfire code and spent a week dicking around with coils, injectors and plugs. Finally deep cleaned the #4 plug hole and vacuumed it out. tons of crud on the plug. Now it runs fine, why and for how long not sure.
Why can’t I find more info on how to use the BARO PID to diagnose?? You’re the only one that even mentions it. Does anyone know someone that can diagnose like you, the master in California? I Just bought high mileage 06’ Navigator w/3V5.4L (NO CHECK ENGINE) only getting 8-10mpg😢😂even after replacing the fuel filter, O2s, plugs (not COP’s), Oil/Filter/Air Filter in addition to cleaning the MAF, Throttle Body, Injectors and CAT! I did find out #8 has intermittent misfire (dead or partial) occurs only sometimes under heavy load. Next step is to sub #8 COP with (easy to get to) #5 COP to see if those intermittent misfires continue on #5 rather than 8. Can u please tell me what value my BARO shud be at sea-level (in San Francisco) during Feb.? Note: ST/LT fuel trims all under 2 digits.
Going back to the dirt spark plug holes and alot of anti -seize on the threads. I blew out plug no.7 plug, the mechanic put new treads in that hole. I know he put something on so the plug wouldn't come loose again. The truck ran fine for 5 months in 22 below Zero weather the plug misfired Big time. Changed out the coil and plug again, now only misfiring slightly in drive at a stop. Any clues as for the answer? Thanks
Do you ever see any problems with coolant leaks on the 5.4L 3v engine? On my 2008, every once in awhile I get a whiff of coolant in the cab. I have yet to add any coolant and if the level in the reservoir is going down it is doing so extremely slow. Right now it is still within the marks on the reservoir. I did a visual inspection out under the hood. Do you ever see these engines with cracked intake manifolds or bad intake gaskets?
So initially I had misfire on cylinder 3. I replaced the ignition coil on there, after driving it for a while, it randomly misfires lower rpms, no codes.
Did the engine sound like if it was knocking or more like a loud tickling similar to the lifters, I have a 2007 with the exact same engine and same misfire but it also has that loud ticking noise like a lifter
Man you really know these 5.4s man! I’m a bit south of Chicago in Nw Indiana, please come help having misfires and just can’t figure out why I get this 446 code!! I’ve done everything that there is to no avail. Please please help??????????

Mine ended up being a bad female connector on the fuel injector.
You can donate enough to buy him a meal or cup of coffee!
I KNOW THIS IS AN OLD VIDEO BUT I RECENTLY BOUGHT A FORSCAN TOOL AND THIS VIDEO REALLY HELPED ME . THANKS
Awesome its nice to see a mechanic with those trouble shooting skills get to the problem without being a parts changer, your customers are very lucky to have a trusted mechanic.
The diagnostic test cost a lot of money sometimes it's just cheaper just to get rid of the car
Thanks
The video quality back on cylinder 4 is top notch! It adds do much more to the explanation of the issues to see these details up close.
Your diagnostic skills never cease to amaze me; great job and great information!
i wish you were local to me, i would over pay just to have your knowledge work on my vehicle. as always great informative video.
madaaron i was thinking the same!
yeeh me too wish in my area so fix up my expy
It wouldn't be over paying, this guy knows his stuff. I also wish he was local. 😁😁
Same might just have to take a trip
So glad he is local to me, he has my Expedition right now...
Thanks for all your videos, helps me keep my 05 f150 going after 251,000m, I'm having the same issue with rough idle, going to have to check into it more, thanks again!
Dude you are simply an awesome mechanic and teacher as well. Love your vids!
Tyler Kulchinsky 01 cobra does not have cam phasers.. 05 and up 3v 4.6 does on the mustang but he does have a good video on 4v common noise issues.
@@jordanfraley27 Dang, 5 years and your half doofy comment still here
I'm so glad you are here.
Whooooo carrreeeesssssss
There may be other channels that go in-depth as much as this one, but I haven't found them. This is awesome. My mechanic did timing chain, guide, tensioner AND phase sprocket replacement for what turned out to be a semi-clogged bank 1 cat. Veh had 148k so at least I know I have new timing chains, but $600 would have fixed it instead of almost $2k. ('07 Exp EL)
+MattInTheHat Thanks!
Dude your a freaking ford guru...straight up found my misfire because of this video
The PID "Power Balance" is fantastic to narrow down the Cyl.4
"Leak down test" by software is a super smart time saver.
Before figuring the injector seal I would have swapped the spark plug with known good Cyl.1
Loved the whole suspense and a great final win !
🤗
Thank you man your the main reason I built up confidence to fix my own vehicle
These trouble shooting videos are just awesome! Real stuff and well explained.
Regards...
Choke on a fuel injected Ford truck. That would be like finding a Unicorn.
Never considered using my noid light on a coil connection. Thanks for that, and all the rest as well.
Thanks.
Beautiful diagnosis! Well done sir. Power balance, relative compression, and injector flow testing - just like that! Man that IDS is sweet. Thanks!
You never seems to disappoint me, good work my friend
I really got caught up in your video as you followed the problem to the last, smallest detail...I honestly thought it was the what looked like a Champion ( porcelain fell on mine) plug you had there in your hand...lo and behold it was the o ring on the injector.Nice job..really enjoy your videos.
Excellent. my 08 F-250 doesn't scare me quite as much now. I thought i was too old to understand all the electronics. I'm not. Thanks to you.
Thank you, as always,
great video. So, how was the problem connector fixed? As a harness or as a single connector?
Good video man. I've done so much 3v troubleshooting this year. I've gotten in these situations many times. Sometimes easy sometimes hard. Had a guy bring me one that Ford did. Plug change. They broke a plug off at the very top of the threads. It was very hard to remove without pulling head and not damage the threads
Great job. Being clean does count. I learned a lot about misfires. I had coolant good down into the spark plug tunnel and short our the coils.
What u do
@@johnplennert8078 had to replace all the coils.
Why would that cause coolant in there?
@@KollynJ my radiator hose was leaking.
@@stephentresca3536 I noticed oil in my 1st cylinder spark plug hole but I believe it was just from me overfilling oil funnel previously? Don’t think the boots seal out liquids that well not sure what else it could be
Would've blamed the spark plug. Injector looked very shaky and something looked amiss.Unusual fault and well diagnosed.
This video was by far one of my favorites. Very informational and learned a lot. Thanks
The following is printed on them (ford 5c3e-db
044/05)
Can someone verify if that is the original injector for 05?
I'm about ready to replace them all with
Motorcraft Cm5138.
If anyone can point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it. Already installed all new plugs motorcraft sp546x,standard ignition bluestreak coilpacks FD508, motocraft fuel filter(was super dirty on take side..like rusty mud),
Things is have in mind to try next is
Thank you for posting the Amazon link regarding the Bluetooth OBD tester!
+W S yup that is the one to get!
Another fantastic video man! Thank you for all the knowledge. Helps immensely 👍🏻👍🏻
So I’m curious did you have to pull the complete fuel rail to change that one fuel injector?
INSANE!!!!!
Great video. I wish you would have shown the balance test again after fixing the injector oring.
It shakes so bad though, curious if something else is wrong.
pass bro.
Btw, how's the Ram 1500? Are you still happy with it?
Enjoy your info. Sure wish you lived closer to Norfolk Va. I have a 05 F-250 5.4L 3v was told it jumped time. they wanted to replace the motor with 170K on it. it runs good but will not idle. Feel Im being played for big bucks. Truck is still sitting in my drive way.
Thank you a ton. This helped me find a no code misfire for a customer 👍👍
Very informative. Always love to watch your videos, you are very detailed
I love this. The engine, not so much. But damn do i know more about her😉😏🤤
188,500 mi 5.4 3 supercab 2 tone.
Jeeze!
and this is why i hate doing diag when someone already touch it.. you need to think outside the box
Awesome video!! I just figured out that's the reason I'm having a misfire!!
Man my f150 is torturing me right now im really hoping that your videos can help. It misfires at such weird times and has that diesel sound with the ticking and surprise its the 5.4. I love the truck but idk what the hell to do
Hi Brian, I'm trying to find your video of solution fix 5.4 3v where you found *wiring harness*
too close and causing ** mystery misfires** can you direct or help me, would help so so much and very appreciated
Great investigative lessons here. Thanks Brian.
I don’t even have a Ford but I love your videos!
I is there an easy way to get to heater core or does everything have to be stripped out.
excellent vid. I really like how you use the scan tool to solve the problem...
Love these videos , trying to figure out why when driving and not pressing the pedal to go but holding it steady my tac drops a little bit , misfire ?
Wow. Someone experienced in this!!?? Great video. Thank you so much??
Awesome diagnositic skill I learned a lot...
