A good idea is to take your scan tool and connect it to all your vehicles when they are running perfectly and then record all the normal waveforms and values and then save them. Then if you have a problem down the road you can compare the current abnormal waveforms and readings with the normal ones from before. This will often make a problem obvious during troubleshooting. I have a full set of normal readings and graphs recorded for all my vehicles to compare with if a problem ever comes up.

Just had my cats replaced on my 2009 F250 5.4 3v. #5 exhaust roller follower was seized and replaced. The engine started to tick. The reason it went in in the first place after seeing your vids on the 5.4. Fortunately caught it early and no damage was done to the engine. You saved another 5.4 out in the field with your advice. Mine! Thanks Brian.

Debating new Engine from Dealership, ( my cousin is the GM, I get a good price) or just replacing everything i.e. Phasers, oil pump, tensioners, chains, rockers and lifters . Those are the only parts i have Not changed out yet. It ticks, idles poorly until warmed up for 15 minutes, throws a 0307. Love the truck, wish I had the 5.0 Thank you for your help. That's crazy. At 71,000 miles. I have the exact same 5.4 3V engine at 348,000 miles, and it runs like a top. Only ever changed the starter, and both VCT solenoids because that seemed like the flavor of the day, so I did it. Yesterday I replaced all SP515 spark plugs to the new SP 546, and I cleaned the throttle body completely. Runs like my wife's Ford 2.7 Ecoboost. I'd put a straight pipe in place of the catalytic converter and be done with it.

I believe the reason #5 misfires is because it fires right after #6, the rest of the cylinders on bank 2 fire after bank 1 giving time for the pressure to drop in #2 manifold.
The best method I've found for finding/confirming a clogged cat is temperature. The outlet on a working cat should be hotter than the inlet, if it's clogged it'll be colder. A quick scan with an IR gun will tell the story.

Cool diag, Brian! I enjoyed the whiteboard explanation segment. The scanner can definitely tell you a lot right from the driver's seat. Personally I still like to back up the scan data with a backpressure reading at the upstream O2 locations. Only takes a minute...if the O2 sensors don't fight you that is lol

That is the problem many times on these engines they gall up in there and you end up pulling the threads out with them. I have never found this diagnostic method to fail me but I do have a manual gauge just in case things don't add up.

I just update the exhauspipes with testing ports that you can plug and unplug when needed.
That way your ECM/PCM can still use o2s and you can be sure you dont brake them in testing backpresures.
Allso dont forget that muflers can allso be pluged...

Been a fan going on 3 years now. I had a misfire on the number 5 and Change the plug, coil and still had an issue at that cylinder. So I get on the freeway and couldn't get over 40 miles an hour going up hill. It did increase going down here. I kept an eye on the RPM and it had me thinking something was wrong with the trans. I had never had problem with it. I got a new engine put in and had them service the trans. So since I did a crappy job, and lied about the service they was going to give me on the engine, I was thinking another thing they beat me out of my money on. So I start watching your video one after another. They shop said it was my intake. I was like it runs and sounds great at low speed. So I did not listen to him. So when I first got the truck 6 years ago. I used to get cat lights on it. But when I drive from Minnesota to Mississippi that check engine light never comes on. But this time it end up being the cat. Another shop told me that changing the cat will not solve my problem. I made a bet with him. He didn't go for it. I am happy to say that my baby running excellent right now with the CAT change Thanks to you sir. You are the best sir. My baby got up to 115 yesterday. Now to get rid of this and never buy another Ford unless it have a 351 in it. Never every had a problem with my Bronco. Should have kept it. Traded it in for this truck.

I have an 2006 Expedition, EB package, 127k miles. Been having some issues lately and this explanation has helped me understand more. Two weeks ago Autozone read a code that Bank 1 sensor 1 was rich, replaced sensor drove interstate and ran good. Parked for 1 1/2 days and CEL came on again, This time it was reading bank 1 sensor 1 rich and bank 2 sensor 1 lean. I will be looking at it tonight with a mechanic friend. I'm also thinking vacuum lines or MAF. The last two winters have been cold and a field mouse has built nest behind MAF a few times. One vacuum line replaced last year. Another appears to be dry rotting, Replacing vacuum line tonight.

My old man bought a brand new lariat 5.4 super crew f150 in 2001. I'm telling you that truck had more problems than the HR department at ISIS. blew a couple spark plugs into the hood in the highway once, and since the day he bought it, the truck was simply gutless. Too much truck in an f150 for that motor in my opinion. It had the clicking sound all 5.4's are famous for. The trucks fit and finish was great, but the power train was simply not enough.

Every so often when taking off it will get the burst of power you expect back goes right away. One Ford dealer said it wasn’t advancing timing. Not sure if it’s timing or vct. My truck looks new and has low miles 137.000 but is mostly worthless. I wish I was close to you. My other 3 V engines are awesome cam phaser lock outs and a sct tune.

isnt it true, hard to find anybody anymore that can actually troubleshoot anything, their answer is just replace the whole thing, went to a tranny shop the other day,all i wanted was them to put a clutch pack in a carrier case, already had it out, just couldnt find a tool to take the spider gears out,had everything i needed to complete it,they weren't interested, not enough money in it,their answer was get a new carrier, ring and pinion and they would put it in for me for $700,really,and forget about the old days when the guys at the parts store actually had worked or still did as mechanics and knew what you were talking about, now its some kid or a retired walmart worker that just punches keys, wtf, like talking to a zombie

    • @markk3652
      @markk3652 5 лет назад

It has to do with the amount of flow thru the engine. If the exhaust is restricted due to the cat being plugged, it affects the ability of the engine to move intake air. The maf constantly monitors this and uses the data to extrapolate fuel mixtures. If it can't breathe right, it won't run right. It is akin to being in a high altitude area with thinner air, like driving in the mountains with a naturally aspirated( non turbo or supercharged) engine. More throttle input required to get any power.

Interesting! I'm getting the P0430 code being thrown, of which I've deleted, so no more 'check engine light' but when I scan it again, it's still showing the same code (just no check engine light). My fuel mileage hasn't been a concern, and my power is still great, thus I'm thinking it may be the sensor being faulty. I've not tried the 'tapping the bottom of the cat', so will try that when the rains stop, but as mentioned the truck still has great power and runs smoothly as it always has!

From a full tank in drops to half in less than 50 miles. Then fills up on 9 gallons. It’s a 30 gallon tank. Do I need a new fuel pump also?

Could a dirty MAF cause low BARO readings too? It could also give you lean codes without throwing a MAF code. The tell tale sign in this case was the long term fuel trims showing lean on both banks but worse on one than the other, pointing only towards a plugged converter. Not much else it could be on this design. Thanks for video.

2006 Ford f150 5.4 2wd here. Would the beginning stages of this cause a rough idle???? No codes. All spark plugs and coils new. New vct solenoids. Thank you

My baro reading is 149Hz but it seems to be stuck at that number even if I clear codes key on engine off.. Bank two is super lean according to my fuel trim readings. All cylinders miss firing. I haven’t smoked test the intake because I’m at home doing the side job. I’m suspecting a plugged catalytic converter

@fordtechmakuloco maybe #5 misfires because #6 fires immediately before and the exhaust pressure from number 6 hasn't finished evacuating and begins filling #5 and diluting the intake as it comes back around? Every other cylinder gets a break before the next ignition event. If this is true the same could happen to #3 if bank 1 is clogged...

The best way to evaluate cat efficiency is to look at the upstream and downstream waveforms and compare them. The upstream one should be varying and the downstream one should be relatively flat. Comparing the two waveforms is essentially how the PCM continuously tests the cats and decides whether to generate a trouble code and turn on the check engine light.

I just ordered some hi-flow (200 cell) cats for my 08 F150, but the new cats do not have the O2 bung in them. Should I just install bungs just behind the cat in the regular 2.5" piping for the O2 sensors?

For a plugged catalytic converter, its quicker to diagnose by comparing each bank with an i.r. gun or thermal imaging gun

Nope especially if both banks have failed, not to mention possible fueling concerns bank to bank with failed components. A test drive with the proper data feed is the way to do this.

My 11 ecoboost f150 popped the 430. Dealer is replacing the bank 2 cat and re flashing the pcm. They gave no reason for the cat to fail, so in your best opinion, what causes the cats to fail and what can be done to remedy it so it does not happen for awhile?

I've got a 2006 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer with the 3v 5.4 Triton motor. I've replaced the plugs twice, the cam phasers, the oil pump, the coil packs in the 5 years I've had it. Recently I've began experiencing low power having to floor it and get it over 3500rpm to get it to get up to speed on an on ramp or to pass a slow moving vehicle. I ran the crap out of it for about 15 minutes using over a 1/4 tank of gas and stopped looked underneath and both cats were glowing orange, and when you run it with the windows down you can hear pre detonation and what sounds like a bad exhaust leak. I parked it and just waiting on some time to pull the manifolds and y pipe and weld in some test pipes in place of the cats to eliminate the problem. Can I disable the post cat 02's so the CEL doesn't stay on all the time? This is the first Ford I've done extensive work on, I've done 5 LSx style motors, and back in the early 2000's installing headers and eliminating the downstream O2 using HP tuners.

Great info. I watched a video of a DIY You Tube Mechanic who thinks his stuff doesn't stink & he gave conflicting info than yours. I hate seeing guys like this get far more views than the pros like Brian, Eric O., Ivan & all the other great techs. I guess some people rather get info from an armature that's in love with himself rather than an experienced pro.

I have a 2009 5.4 3V F150 with 90,000 miles. I have just no power at low rpms when going up hills and any other high demand acceleration. I replaced all plugs, coils, and even changed the MAF with a new one. Started doing this only a month or so ago. Not throwing any codes. Seems to be a little more pull once I actually let off the gas when the RPMS are high. Ive also used your technique to reset the computer by unplugging the battery and connecting the negative cable to positive battery terminal. Really need some help! Thanks

I have 05 f150 FX4 with 149k and keep getting a p0430 and finally decided to change the cat. Checked O2s for both banks and front switching like they should and the rear drop down to .019 volts and it's doing it both sides? The bank 2 is new cat and both new 02s shouldnt the one in cat never drop below .400 right? Now getting a wierd idle and seems to run ruff for bit and after warms it smooths out and sometimes it almost die on me putting it in gear. So I cleaned the maf sensor witch was really dirty and throttle body. Check the volts with the maf sensor at idle and it's at .076 and the bank one got negative long and short terms witch it's over -22 combine but won't throw check engine lights. The baro won't got to normal its staying at 147 to 148.5 and think my area needs to be 151

You need to fix this pronto before you burn up the new cats. Be sure to check the coil pack. On many Fords they crack underneath and will cause misfires under load. Of course it could also be the wires and/or plugs.
