Great video Gary, we love to find these types of local restaurants in Thailand and we are coming to Samui in October for the first time. Travelling from Australia and can’t wait. Love your channel, thanks.
Kanom Jeen was my favorite dish ever in Thailand! You can't get it outside of the country and I have been missing it since I left in September of 2013. You have some interesting greens there I have never tried.
Hey Gary, I still haven't left Samui. 😅 Loving this island! I haven't been to Na Mueang yet but will have to try it now after seeing this video. If I may give a couple recommendations although not very "local" location the food is pretty good, E-Saan Krok Mai (I eat there practically every day), Father of Noodles and The Fish Restaurant. As you may know there are a lot of luxury resorts in Koh Samui. One I've really enjoyed was Conrad Samui in Taling Ngam close to Ying's Cooking School which has a few restaurants within the resort. Can't wait to see more Samui videos!

Things were pretty jumping on Chaweng when I was there but Lamai and Bo Phut were really chill and the rest of the Island was fairly undeveloped then. I agree, I spent 3 months in Maret and I loved the feeling of being in a village rather than a tourist destination. Those wooden houses are so interesting!
There are many variations of bak Kut teh in Singapore and Malaysia. The Teochew version has a peppery broth, there is a robust herbal version in Kuala Lumpur and there is the Klang version (which can include ingredients such as enoki mushrooms, trotters and tail), similar to what you ordered in Koh Samui. Give them a try when you have the chance. Same same but different.

Never been a massive fan of Koh Samui. Any pro tips for a quiet, less touristy place to stay would be good to know for next time. The Dim Sum place looked like my kind of joint. Cheers!
It's Bak Kut Teh (肉骨茶 - directly translated as meat bone tea but officially known as Pork Bone tea). Very well-known in Malaysia. Singapore stole it from us and made a clear broth without adding the Chinese dry herbs (熟地 - shu di - Foxglove root) or even dark soy. In Malaysia, we even have the dry version of Bak Kut Teh. If you would like to discover more best you visit Malaysia & avoid the touristy cliché area like Jalan Alor.
