Drone fishing - quick, cheap and easy way to use a drone for surf casting

- Ever wanted to cast your bait just a little further beyond those breakers into deeper and more productive water?
For the last few years I've been using my trusty old DJI Phantom 3 for drone fishing. I used a rather expensive electronic bait drop mechanism until it recently broke. Instead of trying to fix it, I made a much cheaper and totally manual bait release hook out of an old water container.
It works really good and no more messing around with replacing batteries and turning on and off LED lights on the drone to release the bait.
In this video I'll show you how I made this new release hook and why I like it better than the old mechanism. I'll also show you how I setup my drone at the beach and fly out my baits.

Simple and brilliant design. Imagine fishermen from antiquity being able to see what we can utilise to fish now 🤯🙏
cheers, haha yeah that is an interesting thought.
Well explained. I liked your video as you applied creativity and saved many people money.
Nice trick! I just bought a drone and now I know I can save my money and don't need to buy a fancy line release mechanism.
Glad I could help. Best to practice dropping the line on land a few times before you fly it out over water.
Great video. For what it's worth, I've found that a twist-tie works better than rubber band since it is less sticky and will slip off easier without getting bound up.
That’s also good idea. We use a thin rubber band just in case something goes wrong in the air, it can instantly come off from the drone. For example line stuck on a drift wood or birds flying through or so.
Brilliant..I just made this set up ..I will try this weekend
Awesome, good luck 🤞 also checkout our latest version of the release. It's a tension release and it works really good. ruclips.net/video/ZS0a_M5bIxw/видео.html
Great idea! I think I may have to invest in one of these so I can always get out past the second bar where the big boys are
Awesome stuff mate always wondered how it all works when flying your drone out for your line to drop and last thing a person needs is to buy something expensive to attach to the drone so your line can drop from the drone such a easy and simple set up wicked
thank you. Yeah a simple solution is always the best in my opinion.
Id give more than two thumbs up if I had more hands. This was great. I have to get this one day
Thank you. Yeah you should get one, heaps of fun to fish with a drone.
Great video.I have a dji phantom here in NZ.I payed big money for it a while ago . I even upgraded the attennas to the argtek kit. Was looking at selling it ,but after seeing your video I think might give this go . Thanks for sharing
glad the video is helpful. Great way to utilise an older or unused drone. Make sure you give it a few practice runs over dry land before you fly out to sea.
thanks so much, I was bout to pull the trigger for gannec but it will need to ship from south Africa, will start this diy project now.
Awesome, let us know how it goes. Also check out our other video in which we use a cloth peg for a tension release. Works similar to the gannet release.
Thank you for sharing this. I will definitely try.
You’re welcome 😊
Man, that is a cool way to fish. Thanks for the instructions.
This concept is so simple yet brilliant. wish there was an easy add on for like Mavic 2s. I can make something easy...Inspired by this! Thanks! Good stuff!
Thanks for the feedback, let us know if you find a solution for the mavic.
thanks for sharing this beautiful idea
Thanks 🙏
Your a genius mate. Thanks for Idea.
thanks man, glad it was useful
Your are a genius mate 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
😂 cheers
I watched this last night, and made something up this afternoon gonna take the drone out for a few test flights see how it goes
Great! Exciting! Please let us know how it went
Fu…g genius 🎉 why I don’t thought about that before lol
cheers
i also like where you put the sinker right under and close to the drone most people have the sinker hanging down 5 or more metres you can then get a lot of pendulum action happening
yeah, I prefer having the sinker close to the drone. It works much better in my opinion.
very effective and smart well done.
Thank you! Cheers!
Absolutely Excellente !!!!!
Well done Sir. Great concept, sometimes the simple things are often the best. Just Subscribed.
Awesome, thank you!

Thanks for this good idea great video.
Made my day!!! Cheers mate
awesome, thank you :)
Good job my friend.. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thank you very much
Great video mate
Thanks mate 👍
@@Fishingreminder I'm going to try this when I get myself a phantom for fishing 👌
Thank you! As you get out there, I assume the line in the middle starts dragging on the water, correct? If so, you just have to have a drone with enough power to overcome that drag? I guess smaller diameter and lighter braid would be better.
Hi Jim, the line shouldn't drag through the water. Keep a little tension on the reel with very light drag ( I use a baitrunner reel for that ) so that the line stays above the water but is still easy enough for the drone to pull off the reel. If the line hits the water there is a risk it gets stuck on some drift wood or gets pulled under by a wave. Also fly the drone high enough so that line stays out of the water.
Man, this is a great video!
Thanks man 👍
Well done
Thanks for sharing! The drop release diy is gold! Around what height is safe for the drone to fly? Im guessing around 50m?
cheers, I'm not flying that high when I take the baits out. Maybe only 20-30 meters is enough. I think I have the return to home altitude set to 50m. It can fly much higher but it will only consume more battery.
@@Fishingreminder thanks
Nice
legend! 💪🏽
thanks :)
That was beautiful
thanks :)
You save me a lot of money
Glad it was helpful, Cheers 🙂
Awesome Video's! I'm new to this currently looking at a Drone that would be capable of operating this functionality, what are some key features my drone must have or any advice on a model with good 🔋 🔋 life please?
Thanks man. Lifting capacity, GPS return to home, (arguably a camera) and a few spare batteries are essential. The phantom 3 has it all but it's starting to get a bit outdated. Still a good option because it's very cheap second hand. Possibly the best option is a second hand DJI Mavic Air or a dedicated fishing drone like the Condor drone that we reviewed in one of our recent videos.
nice
I like your system better.
Thanks 👍
nice,
Thank you. What distance and with what weight do you usually send it to? And any thoughts after 3 years gone, perhaps?
still using it, still going strong. My favourite distance is 300-400 meters. Usually use two baited hooks and a surf sinker.
@@Fishingreminder THANKS! =) will buy too =) drone looks like better solution than building a diy "bait boat" for the sea/ocean..
@@andrewb7817 yeah it's definitely more efficient and convenient. Although a bait boat is quite interesting. Useful in areas where drones are not allowed. I always wanted to get one just for testing and for making a video.
Damn i should have just done this.
yeah man, simple and pretty fail proof
Awesome video man! Definitely going to try this out with Kaiser Bass GPS drone, I also have 6 batteries for it too! So heaps of flying time.
Cheers man.
Thanks John, sounds great. I haven't heard of that particular drone yet. Must have a look. Let us know how you get on.
Why not use a downrigger release clip or a simple clothes pin?
Yeah that's also a possibility. I personally prefer this method. But use whatever works best for you.
could you just use a magnet just strong enough to hold the lure ?
I think a strong enough magnet would interfere with the drone's compass and other electronics. It would be better to use a tension release system. Could be as simple as a downrigger clip attached to your drone and then the line will pull free on its own when you close the bail arm on your reel.
great idea!!
any suggestions for the old Mavic Pro?
Haven't used a mavic yet. You'd have to make up some sort of harness I guess.
i also have the dji phantom 3 and my electronic line drop stopped working just got very noisy and would not open or close
Yeah, those electronic releases are pretty fragile and don't last long. I've been using this simple release hook for over two years now and I never looked back. It's so much easier to use and never breaks :)
how do you find the phantom 3 for fishing? would you recommend it? how far and how many drops do you get per battery?
Yeah it's pretty good for fishing. It's got good lifting power and it's not expensive to get second hand these days. I get about 4 casts per battery. So 2-3 batteries is enough for a good session. You'd get a better distance with the phantom 4 but I find the half mile range of the p3 is enough for surf fishing.
@@Fishingreminder how far out do you take your bait? 1,2,3 baits?
@@timorum I usually use a dropper rig with 2 or sometimes 3 baited hooks. I find salted mussels work really good as bait (check out my other video on salted mussels). The distance depends on the beach. On some beaches shorter casts are enough to get the bait just behind the first breakers. On shallow beaches I might take them out 400 meters/1300 feet
@@Fishingreminder Doing some reasearch also, anything else you would like to recommend? what size sinkers you flyin?
@@Fishingreminderhello, i am a beginner in this way of fishing ... can you suggest me a rod and a machine without it being expensive? thanks
Is that a phantom 2 ?
It's a phantom 3
It's all about the 'rubber band'.
Yeah bro, the thinner the better.
Thanks some awesome kiwi/SA ingenuity!! Is it easy to replace the parts like motors on the Phantom 3 drones? The parts seem to be readily available.
cheers, I haven't had to replace any parts yet. But I believe it's pretty easy to do.
@@Fishingreminder Cheers
the problem with this when I tried it is that if there is a bit of wind then when you fly backwards the drone tips into the wind which pushes the plastic connector up and the line can't come off. I spent a whole afternoon testing and not once would it slip off even with the reel locked solid. I almost lost my drone in the ocean several times because of this. It only works with hardly and wind and the drone staying almost dead flat.
Hi there, to overcome this problem I would first make the forward hook shorter, it doesn't need to be very long. And if you use a rubber band then it's better not to hang the rubber band directly over the hook as this makes it harder to slip off. These days I use a paperclip. The paper clip is attached to the rubber band and then you hang the paper clip over the release hook. The paper clip will slide off very easily, even in wind.
also, make sure you use a very thin rubber band and make sure it breaks easily to prevent losing your drone. In our next video, we will show exactly how we do it these days and how we make a rubber band that breaks easily.
Is there an inexpensive powerful drone that i can use for dropping my baits off from shore for fishing? Say around 100m? I'm looking for a unit where i can just us the controllers built in screen instead of a cell phone. And no time consuming calibration like twirling it around. Just looking for a inexpensive no camera unit where i can just turn it on, then send it out visually to my spot that i can see 80-100m off from me, then have it return. A simple to use powerful unit. The Bayangtoys x16 so far is the closest, then the UpAir One. I'm using 3oz lead w/a bait maybe 3/4oz.
I've been looking into inexpensive drones but there are a few problems. First you need a drone with a GPS and return to home function in case you loose the signal. Second you need to be able to buy a few extra batteries for your drone to extend your fishing time. Third the drone needs to have enough power and lifting capacity to drag out your line. That's why most cheap drones aren't really suitable. There is a cheaper Chinese drone - I think it's called an X8pro with GPS and reasonable lifting power - but getting spare batteries could be difficult. I think a used older Phantom 2 or 3 is still a much better choice.
@@Fishingreminder Thanks! Was looking at the UpAir One.

Where can I get a release mechanism?
if you're after a commercially made release mechanism, search google for: gannet bait release phantom 3
What rod are u having?
currently just using a 14ft surf casting rod and a shimano baitrunner 12000oc reel. A long surfcasting rod is good to keep the line above the waves.
Try a clothes pin lot cheaper lot easier
Thanks for the tip
Where is a fish ?)
In the next video 😂
Name drone! Thanks

300 bucks vs a rubber band let me think about that lol
haha, yeah easy decision unless you're loaded, LOL
A piece of wire shaped like a T will work better than a big pc of plastic.
Yeah can use anything to make a forward facing hook. Just depends on the weight. The plastic is really light weight compared to metal. I guess depends on the wire gauge.
Better yet, make your own video Karen.
You need to look at Hawaii drone fishing, much easier, just get a cheap clamp, send the drone out, in Hawaii they go 900 yards, and when they want to drop you just drop the bail on the reel, why make it hard?
Yeah that's another way to do it. You can use a downrigger release clip for that or even a cloth peg.
Karen, why don't you make your own video!?
Very clever, thanks for sharing. Will mod my Fimi x8 when it arrives in the next few weeks and hopefully slay some snaps on the Kapiti Coast. Also, what weight braid do you find best? 20lb?
Hey, sounds like a plan. Let us know how you get on. Yeah 20lbs braid is what I normally use. With that you can get a lot of line on a surfcasting reel.
@@Fishingreminder Tested last week and worked a treat! (No fish yet!) Slightly different setup for the rig - a 50cm dropper from the drone which connects to main line and the sinker hanging with standard ledger flasher rig about 6m down from that. I have found if I speed out and just stop the drone where I want, the rig will release. Tested so far at 300m. Thanks again - such a robust and simple setup.
Well done
Thanks 👍
