  • Hi Folks, Welcome to Man Cave Makings with me Gus,
    In this video I’ll take you through the process of how I made my adjustable height welding stool for the man cave. Not having done a stool before it took a bit of head scratching and lots of coffee but essentially by mapping it out on paper, making a template I was then able to get cracking with the metalwork.
    As with all of my videos my aim is to give as much information as possible to cater for all viewers, including a step by step guide of how I did it. I hope you can take something away from the information shared in the video and use it in your own projects and workshops.
    I talk in the video about how I went from not knowing the right end of a sewing machine to producing the diamond stitched stool top for the stool and you if you want to see that “how to” video you can view it here • How to make a diamond ...
    If you want to find out more about some of the materials used in this video then please check out the list and links below.
    Base material -
    1.6mm Steel Plate (BS EN 10025 S275JR)
    20mm x 3mm and 40mm x 3mm mild steel flat bar (BS EN 10025 S275JR)
    16mm rebar
    M30 screwed stud bar (B7 A193 SC) and 2 x M30 Nuts (B7 A193 SC)
    Welding machine set up -
    R Tech TIG160PDC
    R Tech FT-47K-CL Foot pedal
    CK tig torch - CK9FX (4M no sheath)
    Furick FUPA12 Ceramic cup with 2% Thoriated Tungstens (2.4mm)
    ER70S-2, 1.6mm Tig Rods (A15 triple deoxidised)
    Antiquing fluid - Curator antiquing fluid - UK only delivery from Restoration Materials.
    www.restorationmaterials.co.u...
    Jigsaw blades - HSS metal blades 1.2mm to 2.5mm (used on the sheet material) 2.5mm to 5mm ( used on the flat bar)
    UPDATED: Man Cave Make It Yourself - I have had some requests for a drawing or sketch so you guys can build one of these stools yourself and John Harmon over at Cold Creek Works did me a brilliant favour and took my sketch and has translated it into all sorts of different formats for you to download free of charge tinyurl.com/curved-leg , massive thanks to John and check his channel out for some awesome content. / jdh239
    I mention in the video Jody over at www.weldingtipsandtricks.com/ . I just wanted to give him a shout out as his site and information he has on there is first class and if you’re in to welding like me then I suggest subscribing to his channel. Cheers Jody, thanks for all the tips……..and tricks on welding!
    Music: www.bensound.com/royalty-free...
    I hope you can take some useful information from the video, thanks for watching and I’ll hopefully catch you again.
    Best of luck in your projects,
    Gus

    Great work! Great design, craftsmanship, patina, use of rebar, subtle profile on the legs. I could go on and on. I've been doing industrial designed coffee tables, plant tables and entertainment centers for about 15 years. I've taken different elements from the work of others and incorporated them into my own work. Mostly because I look at their work and think, I like this or that but not the entire piece. This is the first time I would not change anything! Everything is perfect! PS, your right about Jody, his videos are a must watch for any hobbyist welder! Thanks for sharing, Gus!

    When i looked up videos for a workshop stool, this is not what i expected. It did however, greatly exceed my expectations. It taught me a few things (I never knew you could use a jig saw for sheet metal) and also inspired me to aim a little higher. Thanks for making such good quality content.

    Very nice! I've been wanting to do up a custom stool for here in the blacksmith shop, but always seem to put that on the back burner. Sculpting the legs like you did was a stroke of genius and really takes me back to the Golden Age of Machinery when even our industrial tooling had fine legs and graceful curves that rivaled the best that top furniture designers might try for!
    You're right about the Tig, too. I've been a stick welder all my days, and not a very good one at that. I marvel at what you guys can do with a Tig, from the tiniest tacks just to pin something in place, to full beads so pretty they actually compliment the overall aesthetic. Makes me wish I could Tig, but I just can't seem to grasp the matter.
    Still, you've given me some good ideas and I'm thankful for that.
    What blades do you like in your saber saw for cutting that thick of steel? I've never tried that, but seeing how clean a job you did has got me thinking I need to remedy my oversight.

    • @ManCaveMakings

      Three River Forge , my heart felt thanks for your message one of the nicest things I’ve ever read from someone who has viewed my content Thank you so much it’s what inspires me to continuing making content.
      I absolutely loved making my stool and in the description there are links to the plans if you want an idea of scale/sizes etc.
      On the blades front I use Timco products the ADDAX HSS blades 75mm long and two different tooth configurations depending on thickness of material. Hope that helps bud.
      Cheers 👍

    That's a great job on the stool . Looks very man cave. Also great job on the video and audio. Thanks for that. Curious as to how many hours for that project?

    • @ManCaveMakings
      @ManCaveMakings  5 лет назад +1

      Cheers Dave and thanks for commenting glad you liked the video. It’s a really good question as I’ve not kept a log of hours for any of the projects, might need to think of doing that in the future! As I’m not commercialising these for sale I don’t mind if things drift a little but I guess if I had to put a number on it then the frame of the stool would be in the region of 50-60hrs and the stool seat top with the stitching took 20-25hrs I would guess. If you add in coffee breaks and filming and editing then I’m sure my wife would tell you “way to bloody long” 😂🙈👌

    Absolutely awesome chair, looks and practical. I noticed the chop saw you were using (evolution rage 3). are you still using the stock saw blade or have you switched it out for a different brand?,,,, I have the same saw and the blades do not last long for me at all, I am going to try a dewalt blade next.

    • @ManCaveMakings
      @ManCaveMakings  6 лет назад

      curtis siwak thanks for the comments and feedback, yes I stick with the Rage blade as I’ve tried a Erbuer one but it was useless. The problem is the shank or disc bore is 25.4mm and standard size is 30mm so I can’t get alternative options in my local area. If you do get a Dewalt and it decent if you could let me know as I agree the saw blade is £20 and doesn’t last very long. What I have found though is if you let the arm weight cut your material ie don’t push down and leave a “light touch” and let the blade cut seems to make the blade last longer. Good luck

    • @ManCaveMakings
      @ManCaveMakings  6 лет назад

      +JJ ggirt thanks for viewing my content it’s much appreciated especially taking time to ask questions. Yes it’s a regular jigsaw it’s a Makita 4340OFCT (110v) with HSS blades. I used two different kinds a 1.2-2mm blade for the sheet metal and a 2.5-6mm blade for the 3mm bar and when I tacked up the 3 leg parts. Hope that helps cheers Gus

    • @ManCaveMakings
      @ManCaveMakings  6 лет назад +3

      Hi John it’s not something I’ve thought about so thanks for the question. I still have the template but without making another video I’m not sure how to share it. Would rough sizes be ok?

    • @JohnHarmon
      @JohnHarmon 6 лет назад +3

      If you take a picture of it straight on (if you take it at an angle it will get all skewed), with a measuring tape next to it (let me know what measuring system you use), then I can convert it to CAD and send it back your way if you would like.

    Just out of interest, and reading back throughnthe posts, if anyone else is interested, the way I done it was to download the tiny url doc, the printed onto two sheets of A4, superimposin one half over the other, tape them together, trace the shape using graphite tracing paper onto a large piece of thick white card, (or two pieces of A4 card) and et voila, there is your pattern, use fabricators soapstone to draw around your card template and cut out from your chosen steel, hope this helps.
