DIY Electromagnetic welding table upgrade

  • Hi folks welcome to Man Cave Makings with me Gus,
    In this video I’ll take you through how I turned a door mag lock into this welding table insert pad so I can get a magnetised third had holdy down thingy in my welding bench, all at the flick of a switch!
    The idea for this came from a live stream I did on Instagram where I did a hour build challenge live. It was an awesome experience but there were a few instances of small metal parts needing shaped and moulded with the grinder and one or two of them might have been punted over the workshop a great pace as I could hold them at the same time as using the grinder.
    As I would have expected a few comments of “Gus your gonna loose a finger”, and “you should put that in a vice”, we’re all very valid but in most cases I can’t use a vice so this set my mind into overdrive.
    A few days later I was sat in my office at work and as with most modern workplaces there is a security door entry system where you tap your pass on a pad on the wall to release the door. Our doors have these bloody big magnetic pads bolted to the top of the door and I had the eureka moment............I wonder how much holding force one of those things has?????
    As it turns out, quite a lot! I jumped onto Google and did some research and found a brand new 24v electromagnetic door lock on eBay for £15 and what was more surprising is that it said it has 750Kg of holding force. At that point I thought even if this doesn’t work for such a small outlay this is definitely worth trying.
    All I needed to do was make the aperture in one of the slats of the welding bench to receive the thinner gauge plate. The reason for doing this is the magnet would not be strong enough to energise through 12mm steel and then have any magnetism left to hold a part or anything else. I went with a 3mm plate section to maintain some level of rigidity and wear capability but being thin enough for the magnet to do its thing.
    As you will see in the video I’m delighted with how this new pad will improve safety in my shop and protect my digests form the angry end of the grinder but also it has kicked off a load more possibilities in my head which is what I love!
    I hope you have maybe taken some good information from the video and as always I love to hear from you so please do leave me a comment and if you liked the video consider giving a thumbs up or subscribing which would be awesome. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch my content and as always I hope to catch you again.
    Door mag lock - I’ve not put a link to this as eBay links tend to be short lived and you will have to research what you can get online but if you search under Door Mag Lock, or Door entry magnetic locks, or mag lock for door access systems you will find them easily. They are very common and as you will see very cheap to buy! Good luck guys
    Power supply - I used a 240v to 24v 1A power supply which I got from Amazon and a simple double pole in line switch with some 2 core 0.75mm cable to tie it all together.
    Materials
    3mm plate steel
    20x20x3mm angle
    6mm screwed rod with nuts
    Welding machine
    R Tech TIG160PDC
    R Tech FT-47K-CL Foot pedal
    CK tig torch - CK9FX (4M no sheath)
    Furick FUPA12 Ceramic cup with 2% Thoriated Tungstens (2.4mm)
    Music is from epidemic sound

      Mahalo brother, I’m not sure of the exact holding force as I’ve fitted a 3mm top plate so it definitely losses some magnetism through the plate but it holds up really well so you should try and find the maximum one you can get and give it a go. Dude this is so much better than my solution. Looks like I need to order some parts. I won’t be adding it to my weld table like you did, maybe a dedicated stand, but my new one will turn on and off. Great job and thanks for the inspiration to make my setup better. I’ll send you a link to mine which is pretty pathetic in comparison. It worked but being able to turn off the magnet. So much better. I was always thinking of a on/off magswitch type solution but this seems even better.

    G'day from Australia, Gus. I came across your channel while looking for some design ideas for my own 'electromagnetic holdy downy thing' to hold small parts that need to be cleaned, after they've come off my plasma cutting table. Having to clamp and reclamp them during the cleaning process is a PITA, especially when I have lots of pieces to clean. I have bought 4 of those door maglock units rated at 180kg each, and a power supply, so thanks for the design ideas for my build. Love the excitement and energy you create in our videos, too. I've subbed so I can check out more of your man cave makings.

The same reason I built mine was for small thin metal parts and finding them so hard to hold this is an absolute brilliant thing to have in the table. I’m having a wee break from making as I’m travelling just now but hope to do more in the future, also do a fair bit on Instagram. Take care my friend and thanks again for watching and sending a message, very much appreciated 🤜🏻🤛🏻👍🏻🙌🏻

      Bryce my man, thanks for giving my channel a tour buddy, very much appreciated. That sounds like an interesting challenge as the magnet to nail ratio is so massively different to that of a mag lock where both surface areas are similar so the magnetic force generated can be quite small. Just an awesome idea. I wonder if there’s an electromagnet where you can dial in the holding power, so you’re only using what you need. My brain is just thing of how welding magnets sometimes deflect the arc when you TIG weld,,,just musing I feel like making one just to experiment

    • @ManCaveMakings
      @ManCaveMakings  4 года назад

      That’s an interesting idea and I don’t know if that’s possible as I would guess it would have to do with how the electromagnet is wound? Maybe multi windings like a motor winding for different speeds? Yeh the magnetism will do funny things to your arc and I wasn’t planning on welding on it as I’m fearful of heat transfer screwing up the windings but I love how your thinking and definitely go for it as they are so cheap to get a hold of. Thanks Aaron really appreciate you stopping buy and also leaving a comment dude 👍🏻👍🏻

      @@ManCaveMakings thanks for that, truely a great idea. Unfortunately the prices here are outrageously expensive. $300 au being the cheap end, some as much as $2500au. The magnets in my table are only 80kg holding power, are directly on the table with no plate, and work ~ok~ to hold but I never thought of using a door magnet which are much stronger. • @ManCaveMakings
      @ManCaveMakings  3 года назад

      Thanks Zack, I don’t think it’s strong enough to magnetise anything really, I guess it all depends on how long it’s on for. @@ManCaveMakings Hey thanks for getting back. But i'm a bit confused, in the video you describe it having significant hold. So if I was to lay a joint over the magnet to tack, would it be suitable ? thanks again

    • @ManCaveMakings
      @ManCaveMakings  3 года назад

      Thanks Zack, very much depends on what you’re welding I think, for example I use TIG for everything and if I were to try and tack two bits of thin gauge material with the magnet on it would be very difficult as the arc would be affected by the magnetic force, maybe it would work for box section but I’ve not tried that yet. Basically I predominantly use this for work preparation ahead of welding and have not tried any direct weld holding on it and if you have experience of using magnetic 90deg holds and tacking and welding I think the same principle would happen with this. Hope that helps my man 🤜🏻🤛🏻

      Hi Mr Pucho, thanks so much for dropping me a message and giving my idea a go in your workshop sounds great. I think 180Kg will be underpowered as my 750Kg holds well but does move every now and then so having something which is a quarter the power I don’t think will work very effectively. Ciao, ho comprato il mio su ebay ma purtroppo il link non funziona più. Se cerchi sotto serratura magnetica 24v dovresti riuscire a trovarne un po 'in questo modo su ebay. Buona fortuna e grazie per aver guardato e commentato il mio contenuto, grazie

    8:29 почему магнитится? Ведь полюса замкнуты стальной пластиной!

      Пластина тонкая, не замыкает весь магнитный поток+мощный эл.магнит+24вольт вместо12! Вот и весь секрет.
