  • My FIRST video! Part 1 of 2. The BEST school bus EVER!! Take a ride on perhaps the only known footage to exist on RUclips of an active Gillig Phantom School Bus built in the 1980s, owned and operated by Kamehameha Schools - Kapālama Campus in Honolulu, Hawai`i. Bus 312 is the only remaining Gillig Phantom school bus left in Kamehameha Schools' (KS) bus fleet and is (to my knowledge) the ONLY (school/transit) bus left in the State of Hawai`i with a Detroit Diesel 6V92 engine!!! Honolulu was once a haven for Gillig Phantom buses back in the day, when both KS' and TheBus' fleet of Gillig Phantoms ('83-'84 models) roamed the island with 6V92 engines. Now, this is the only relict left of a bus STILL running a 6V92 engine: the original, granddaddy of ALL Gillig Phantom models - the Gillig Phantom School Bus!! Enjoy!!

The Gillig Phantom Schoolcoach (the official description) was produced from 1986 to 1993, however there was no production in the years 1991 and 1992.
Unlike the Phantom transit bus, the Cat 3208T turbo diesel engine (a V8) could be specified (225 or 250 hp), as well as the availability of such manual transmissions as the Fuller T-11605M and the RT-11610, and the Spicer CM6252A, alongside the more common Allison automatics (MT643, MT647 and HT747).

awesome. most school buses here are blue bird's, most of the Gillig Phantom's are city buses. pretty cool that a Gillig Phantom is being used for a school bus

It pulls up when at red and goes at green and slows down at yellow, and It pulls up when you step on brake and takes off when you step on gas.

@jsmurd: Yes, I do plan to post another video on here soon (hopefully within a month) with pics of the exterior of this bus, and maybe with the same audio to accompany it. The last time I've seen this bus was last year, 2012 and haven't seen it since. It was the last relict of its' kind and I'm afraid it's been since sadly retired from this schools' bus fleet. Been fortunate to have ridden it annually for the past 8 years prior to its demise :'(

Kamehameha? That also sounds like a character portrayed by the late Michael Ansara.

Actually, yes I do have several snapshots of the exterior, tho at the time I didn't think of incorporating it with this video before I posted it. Sorry, I'm still new to posting videos on here and haven't learned (yet) how to incorporate pics into videos via Windows Movie Maker. But I'll see what I can do...

What?! Are you serious?? NOOOO!!! When did they retire this bus? This was the very last Gillig that KS had correct? More importantly, where did this bus go? The staff should've kept this last remaining Phantom...it still runs good and is a CLASSIC!!!
