As a lifelong Greyhound lover, I am fortunate to have driven from 2008 to present with 2012 being the last year I drove an MC12. I miss them so much. Oooh this brings back memories. I felt so proud to finally be driving the Hound.
Last Times I Rode an MC-12 was 2005, One Trip was from Philadelphia PA to Montgomery AL (26-Hour Ride One-way), and in 2006, from Philadelphia to Louisville KY (16-Hour Ride One-way), But it was Worth it for Listening to that DD 6v92 and the Allison HT 740 Making Love.....
Great bus! During 1997, on my return trip from Miami, FL to Lancaster, CA (Military Leave) I lost count on how many Greyhound MC-12's I encountered going to and from Los Angeles. I would have loved to have riden on this bus, because I have good memories of the MCI MC-7's, -8's, and -9's traveling back and forth to Georgia for Summer and christmas vacations. Go Greyhound!
Mc12 sounding good bring back memories when I drove them to me the 12 was the best bus to drive back then and especially if you had one that would get up and run and wasn't govern! Run big Dog Run !
That engine needed that power and all the turbos for those ultra long distance runs. From New York to Cali. All those states and mountainous terrain in between
There's about 40 MC12s at Greyhound Canada. I see them in my city a lot. They're equally split between 6V92TA and S50. They also still have their USA rollsigns on them.
Greyhound only had DD50 engines in the -12s. About 10 of the 1994 MC12s ( # 2454-2463 ) were the first units with them. Afterwards, the 1997-1998 -12s ( # 2919-3176 ) came with them.
That air let off at 1:51 tho! Man motor coaches will NEVER and I do mean EVER sound this damn good again. With all the CARB, Eco friendly tree hugging BS
1of 2: Yes that's an MC-12, at least by sound. At the beginning of the run, MCI put the 6v92 in it. It wasn't until later that they put the DDEC 50 series in it. While I don't know the exact transmission used in this video, I can say that it's something in the HT 74x series (740? 746?) as the 740 series produced a hydraulic "whine" when shifting, most notably in the "lag" between 2nd/3rd. The "clunk" of the air compressor is classic 6v92.
I'm tryin man trust me...lol. But I knew Greyhound was a very heavy Detroit user! I just didn't know when they stopped making the buses with 6V92's. IMO I like the 6V92's better than ANY engine made today!
I'm sorry, I think your mistaken. The G4500's had a couple C13's for testing, other than that everything else is Series 60. The new Prevost's have the S60, and they may now be equipped with the Volvo D13. Anyone want to chime in?
@sideslide23 - Thank you for your comments. However, my channel is not a place to post your negative opinions about Greyhound, its subsidaries, nor the negative experiences you had on public transport in general. This channel entertains those who like and travel by bus, plain, train, and any method of public transportation.
@ClassicTVMan1981X The JT8D is a series of jet engines produced by Pratt & Whitney for the Boeing 727, 737-100, 737-200 & the McDonnell-Douglas DC-9 . Likewise with Rolls Royce & the RB211 series for the Lockheed L-1011, Airbus A300, Boeing 747, 767, 757, and the Tupolev Tu-204-120
i used to love riding this coach..i agree with u whammy9531..love the powerful sound of that ole "screamin demon detroit" the one greyhound runs now are really nice and actually longer the mc 12s only seat 47 the new 6000 dl3s seat 55
Greyhound's MC-12 Coach is operating it's last trips for the company............ There are a few "blue roofs" still running between Miami and Key West. Some of the newer refurbished MC-12's have been shipped up to Canada Greyhound. Richmond, Virginia has about a dozen parked, out of service, at its garage . As these coaches come in for maintenance, some are just parked and end up being used for spare parts for other MC-12's.
@6V92TA - Hmm... As far as I knew, Greyhound got all the 6V92TA powered MC-12's with the older HT-740 transmission but I could be wrong. I got that from someone else so not entirely sure.
I cant decide wheather I want a MC9 or MC12. Im pretty set on a 6V92 more towards the silver 6V92 but not sure. Anyone know which one was more reliable?
@qwandiddy There's still a few kicking around the northeast, I've seen a few in Buffalo as of a few months ago, but I haven't been to the USA for a while. About 20 to 30 of them were shipped up to Greyhound Canada, and renumbered 80xx . A few of them are sitting in toronto, either wrecked or dead and being pillaged for parts. Some of them are still very good runners. I like the sound of the 6V92 engine, I wonder what the redline rpm is on them, since the MC12s don't have tachometers :p
14 лет назад
@Neouka Where abouts in US are they kicking at? I havent seen them coming here in Chicago since like 8 years.
@qwandiddy ohhhhh there's still a few kicking around. Had the choice today between a Series 50 MC12 and a 6V92 MC12 ... took the screamer out for a ride. Second gear had some issues locking the torque converter up so she was screaming pretty good going up a highway onramp. 25 mph all the way up, cars behind me got a good smoking :p
awesome video i love greyhound buses i actually have a collection of toy greyhound buses..13 to be exact which also happens to include one just like this one
some of my family members rode the mcimc12 greyhound bus#2255 from new York City port authority bus terminal after we switched from the greyhound mcimc9 witch is from Atlantic City we have to make three stops first it was Richmond Virginia at the bus terminal but we went back to the same bus#2255 to Fayetteville north Carolina bus terminal with a fuel station the bus was filling up with fuel and the bus went to stop at a restaurant and the bus driver have to eat something there a driver can't go on a empty stomach after the driver eat at the restaurants he went to the bus to finish the job we are so close to Tallahassee but the buses destination was Jacksonville FL bus terminal it was it's last stop we have to switch buses and the last one is either a mci 96 or 102a3 bus the last stop it was at Tallahassee bus terminal and that's when the two day's travel end it was 19 years ago the old mci buses are still the great American coach buses and today that's why they said go greyhound and leave the driving to us
If there are your best luck is Greyhound Canada, which may have a few of them. Although I did hear some buses with 6V92TA engines were repowered with CAT engines.
2 of 2: You don't have to ride the dog to hear this one, almost any RTS/RTS II will make this noise :-) The DDEC 50 series is easy to tell by sound at idle. If you're near an MC-12 and almost want to call the engine a CAT, it's most likely a DDEC 50.
wrong, the Blue Tiger built by AdTranz is bigger! And btw, we don't have to walk about diesel locos, when we have an excellent wired rail network, with locos like the IORE. And btw we can turn it also the other way around: European diesel locos are also used in North America for already half a century, like the Krauss-Maffei ML-4000 or Southern Pacific 9010...
@metroktransit i loved ridin this coach engine sounds so powerful and awesome i take it from your screen name u must b a transit bus driver do u drive coaches like this one ?
I thought I hey stopped making that design after like 1991. Cuz I remember when Peter pan had the first 102DL3s with the then new Detroit Diesel Series 60 engine and that was in 1995
Actually My Friend. I've Caught The Last MC-12 On June 10th Of 2011 From Philadelphia To New Paltz New York Going To Visit My Sister That Day. And It Was Equipped With A Detroit Series 50 With An Allison Transmission. I Miss These Buses. So Much
You Know It's Funny How You Say That. I Used To Like Going Through Utah and Colorado Down Hill When The Transmission Downshifts With The Detroits 6 & 8v Series. They're Absolutely NO Sound Like Them.
The MC12 is basically a 96A3 underneath with the improved suspension and air bags. Also had the bigger a/c condenser door to cool better with the 134a freon. The 6V92 engine should be DDEC which is the computer control for the engine and transmission and this helps them run better and get better fuel economy. The front roof cap is different with an aerodynamic shape, the front headlights are rectangular and the rear tail/brake light housings come from the 96/102A series. But inside it's basically an MC-9 with blue interior. And although this bus was built the way Greyhound wanted it, anyone could order one if they wanted and a few other companies did as well as law enforcement agencies to use as prisoner transports.
@pioneermci There is some euro trash, but there are some vehicles that are nice. I like MCI, how ever I am very impressed with the Volvo. MCI is still my favorite coach. I bought a Hyundai I was not impressed with anything else at the time. I like Volvo trucks too, excellent trucks. Van Hool, no. Neoplan, no.
@studpuppy69 Keep the euro plastic trash including engines in europe. In addition, the biggest selling Diesel Locomotive in europe rail service is that of EMD, formerly GM!!!
What a beast of a bus! These things were built for the long haul
As a lifelong Greyhound lover, I am fortunate to have driven from 2008 to present with 2012 being the last year I drove an MC12. I miss them so much. Oooh this brings back memories. I felt so proud to finally be driving the Hound.
If nobody told you, thank you for your service.
Your not just a bus driver, you are a person that makes things possible 🫡
Last Times I Rode an MC-12 was 2005, One Trip was from Philadelphia PA to Montgomery AL (26-Hour Ride One-way), and in 2006, from Philadelphia to Louisville KY (16-Hour Ride One-way), But it was Worth it for Listening to that DD 6v92 and the Allison HT 740 Making Love.....
Damn! I miss these old MCI buses. They sounded SOOOO smooth with the 6V92 in them. That turbo whine, however, was the icing on the cake.
guildrich The "hydraulic whine" when shifting from first to second and second to third comes pretty darn close ;-)
Yes
Damn skippy
Operators were so professional and courteous on the announcement mics
@@mrslywwilliams313 Right, now it's just "Listen up, we going to DC, aight?"
I SO MISS THESE DAYS WHAT A DAMN GOOD RIDE TO HAVE FOR 3.25 CENTS
oh man, brings me back to childhood of taking the greyhound from louisville to detroit once or twice a year!
Those were some good running busses back then.
JESUS that is a great sounding bus.
Oh Yeah
Wow! The way this coach sounds, made me go in a dreamworld. Wonderful recording footage of the 6V92TA MC-12 model.
Great bus! During 1997, on my return trip from Miami, FL to Lancaster, CA (Military Leave) I lost count on how many Greyhound MC-12's I encountered going to and from Los Angeles. Reminds me of our Neoplan An440's. My the 6V92 was common back then.
Damn I Miss Greyhounds old buses I swear
I remember pulling the second leg east to Billings MT in 3025, what a car, we had very long breaks along the way.
Yeah man the MC-12s sound awesome with 6V92 and Series 50 engines. I'm glad they ran on Detroits instead of Cummins engines
That engine needed that power and all the turbos for those ultra long distance runs. From New York to Cali. All those states and mountainous terrain in between
I saw this bus back in the year 2010 It reminds me way back in the year 1998 my mom and I were on this bus
In 1998, the Series 60 for motorcoaches were in their 3rd year of production. The 6v92/8v92 was being phased out
Michael Harris yeah they they just chilling now
Michael Harris i se them all the time
Michael Harris look them up on google
Michael Harris they the bus feelts
I miss the smell of the air fresheners on the GH buses
This, I swear.
i love these buses! they sound so cool!

All the times I rode with Greyhound I was on a MC-9 one time and that was with the DD50 repower!!! I love this engine!
Sounds just like Muni's 1984 Flyer D901's. I love it!
That air let off at 1:51 tho!
Man motor coaches will NEVER and I do mean EVER sound this damn good again. With all the CARB, Eco friendly tree hugging BS
Amen to that. I could listen to this engine whine forever
You got that right. This is sweet music to my ears

it was around late 1996. Early 1997.
Greyhound # 2918 was the last bus with it.
#2919 - 3176 ( 1997-98 MC 12s ) have DD50s
If the engine is a 6V92TA DDEC, the recommended transmission should be an Allison HT741 ATEC.
Besides the 8v71, the 6v92 is my favorite engine.
Those were the days. I rode many of those.buses and drove them when I used work for them.
@david123321ism - agreed. The 6V92 is my favorite. It was to replace the 8V92 ... which wasnt as fuel efficient as the 6V
Wow this beast was probably one of second to the last to get the 6V92 engines back in 1994, even though the 6V92 engines ceased in 1993
I'm tryin man trust me...lol. But I knew Greyhound was a very heavy Detroit user! I just didn't know when they stopped making the buses with 6V92's. IMO I like the 6V92's better than ANY engine made today!

the quintessential motorcoach engine
Beeeeaaaaautiful Sounds😁
@Neouka I really like these old things better than newer ugly looking ones. Especially in newer scheme.
Great to hear that.
MY GOD where has this engine gone? i miss this one and the 8v71n engine sounds. everything now sounds like a rail freight engine
i can't even begin to guess the number of miles I've ridden to the sweet sounds of this engine, but truth be told, my heart's with the 8v71 ;-)
I remember rideing flexible transit busses in the 90s that sounded exactly like this. They sure sound really cool.
I LOVE IT
The Newer Greyhounds buses are running cummins engines now. The older greyhounds buses are better with the 6V92's or Series 60's engines
The 8v71 Was The Dodge "Slant 6" Of Engines. Always Dependable In Every Way. The Sweetest Sound On Earth. Period.
I love the engine of this bus.
Leprechaun lines #611 was my fav💞
Imagine if these had the 12v71........jeez!!!!
NJT Stand UP!!!!!!!!

Greyhound's MCI-MC12 Classic Coach, wasn't it?
@ClassicTVMan1981X Why not both? I do that along with a JT8D and an RB211 :-)
@metroktransit i loved ridin this coach engine sounds so powerful and awesome i take it from your screen name u must b a transit bus driver do u drive coaches like this one ?
Does MCI still make this model?
Chris naw I don’t think so
Chris they done they just chillen now
Anything from the MC-12 and earlier isn't being built anymore.
Great minds think alike :-)
I thought I hey stopped making that design after like 1991. Cuz I remember when Peter pan had the first 102DL3s with the then new Detroit Diesel Series 60 engine and that was in 1995
I STILL don't know what the MC-12's look like from 1997-1998!!!!
@w5pda
JT8D? RB211? What are those two?
these busses were work horse's of greyhound
all of these buses retired from the late 2000's or early 2010's.
So Much

Definitely On The Same Page. LMAO!! I Remember These Puppies When They Were New And Smoking Was Allowed In The Early 80's
You Said You Have One Of These Puppies? I Was Looking At A 1991 Crown Supercruiser ll School Bus With This Engine In it.
@qwandiddy
I like the new ones, they look nice and ride like a dream! Plus the onboard wifi and power outlets are a much appreciated amenity.
You sure? Then that was a MC-12 then? I know I got on an old MCI with a DD50 in it!
@w5pda
Or, better yet, a well-tuned and well-maintained Silver 8V92TA.
Nice...
hi whammy 9531 would you happen to know where i could get a toy greyhound bus like the 1994 mci mc12 and i agree classic coach yes it was
What's the difference between an MC-9 and an MC-12?
The MC-12 was exclusively built for Greyhound!
Reminds me of CAT's Gillig Phantoms
@pioneermci There is some euro trash, but there are some vehicles that are nice. I like MCI, how ever I am very impressed with the Volvo. MCI is still my favorite coach. I bought a Hyundai I was not impressed with anything else at the time. I like Volvo trucks too, excellent trucks. Van Hool, no. Neoplan, no.
Oh then they're the same thing then? That's why I can't tell...lol...man do I feel slow!
@orionvii271 Put in an MP3 player on a loop along with an 8V71, and it'll happen :-)
Indeed My Friend. "INDEED". It's The God's Honest Truth.
Oh ok cool..... bring me back to speed! lol
@studpuppy69
Keep the euro plastic trash including engines in europe. In addition, the biggest selling Diesel Locomotive in europe rail service is that of EMD, formerly GM!!!
