Gosh I miss riding the 8600s and 8900s they had on the M101 from midtown to Washington heights!!! My favorite part of that line is the hill from 125th to around 135th streets off of Amsterdam Avenue. Due to the viaduct. Those series 50s used to pull so hard uphill.
So much faster than the 6v92. It was a major improvement over that engine. Even though bus fans still admire the sound of the 6v92 I personally loved the series 50 because I appreciated the substantial power increase
The slow take off is due to a DDEC protocol called "SMOKE MODE" which prevents less Particulate Matter and reduced NOX levels which in conjunction with the Catalytic Converter muffler allows it to meet EPA and CARB with no problem. NYCTA Buses of the same year 1997-1999 all have that setting if the engine is Non-EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation)
To me it sounds like a series 50 with the Allison V731 transmission. The V731 whines really loud as you can tell on RTSs and Flxible Metros. You can definitely tell when the coach is stopped its a Series 50. And the V731 does whine while the bus is in motion but I think it may be quiet while stopped but Im not sure.
correct. This is ex-Gardena #792. The new owner didnt like those nasty green hard seats...so he removed them and swapped seats with an ex- LA Metro RTS he had scrapped.

The same colors and style used on AMA buses in San Juan from 1992 thru 2002, rubber grab rails on seats only on 1992 units

Could be a throttle delay, DDEC issue, or the way that engine is set. It's a variety of things

He probably didnt get to upload the details & its an RTS as the TITLE says. Its a Detroit Diesel 50 Series Engine - Allison VR-731 ATEC Transmission.

The transmission is a little worn out... and this with this bus still being pretty old at at the time I'd say yeah, its pretty normal.
