  • 1st update of our long term review of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio.
After putting 4,000 miles on and off road, we give you our opinions on this "sporty" SUV.
Hosted by Ce, a 3rd generation car nut who has worked as an auto tech, salesperson, service manager/writer, and courier/delivery driver in addition to just putting 100's of 1000's of miles on his personal vehicles for fun. Opinions on Automobiles is raw and informative. We present real opinions from car owners and service people unfiltered and honest with the facts to back them up. We go beyond first impressions and marketing jargon to explain the reality behind it all.

Fantastic review. Fantastic scenery. Tnx. Btw, my 2006 Alfa 166 2.4jtd TI is the most reliable car I ever had (I am 65). Nothing went wrong in 250000kms. And, after all these years, she still makes me smile.

Can't argue with that. Although I will say, considering how many Toyotas are under recall - bad fuel pumps, gas tanks that won't actually fill up, suspension arms that can crack, etc....maybe time to rethink the truth of that statement. Buy an Alfa for reliability. Mine has been bulletproof.

Just took my Stelvio off road for the first time since we got it back in August. It's been reliable and fun and has about the same mileage. The terrain was soft mud after rain and I thought we might get stuck. But the Q4 would eventually start to move and even made it manageable in tight spots. Hands down some of the worst to learn your car with but I knew it could probably handle it and this video really confirms what its capable of. Awesome to watch.

I own a 2020 Stelvio and without question, this video is SPOT ON!! Both the praise and the criticism. (Who the Hell designed these sun visors??). It’s a remarkable car. One that should by all rights dominate the market place. Unfortunately it’s the victim of Alfa’s checkered past. This sucks but I think it’ll help it reach classic status one day. I own a Giulia Quadrifoglio and a Stelvio Ti sport. Love them both!!

This is thorough and intelligent, and every minute is fun. I loved watching it! Ce claims to be opinionated; in my view his opinions are remarkably well informed. Filled with practical tidbits, any serious viewer should take notes. I loved the desert background... I've done lots of deep sand, desert off-road driving and this video is 100% legitimate. I always carried a shovel in my 4x4 trucks and have had use of them, I don't think Ce is getting stuck here.

Until now I've never seen an off-road review of my car (Stelvio Quadrifoglio). We don't have a lot of 'off-roads' in our little country (the Netherlands)... too crowded and a lot of asfalt roads..... but after I've seen this review, I'm confident that my car will have no problem going off-road. Conservative off-roaders here were mocking me about the fact that the Stelvio doesn't have an off-road switch like a 'proper off-road car should have' .... now I know why .. it doesn't need to have one ...;-)) Thanks for the info !!

Even body on frame off road vehicles don’t need “off road” settings. Toyotas, fords, Kias, and even Jeep and others today have “mud, rock, snow, blah blah blah”
It’s been proven time and time again that “auto” only does okay-ish on the jeep models while “rock” is the mode you put it in if you don’t want to burn rubber waiting for limited slip software to finally take action. It’s ridiculous, why doesn’t the system just immediately act and do what it’s supposed to do?
The only vehicle I’ve seen with off road drive mode button doodads do ANYTHING actually interesting and useful is the Toyota sand recovery mode.
My Nissan Xterra has zero drive mode things- it just has a gas pedal and limited slip that simply springs into action regardless of transfer case position and ground conditions. It just works and works so well.
Thank you Alfa for simply making a good and reactive limited slip system.
The macan has proven its off road button to doing mostly nothing. Roller tests show that their limited slip is a crazy amount of lazy.

    • @opinionsonautomobiles7666
      @opinionsonautomobiles7666  5 лет назад

The 2.0 Jeep engine and the 2.0 Alfa engine are the same engine essentially. Jeep adds the 48 volt system to it and assembles the parts in their plants. Alfa gives you lighter/stronger alloys and nitriding to some of the internal parts, along with building the entire thing in Italy. The lightness and better finishing, along with the ultra-efficient drivetrain are what make the Alfa a better performing engine in terms fast, smooth revving and increased top end power in particular. There is also unique engine mapping between the vehicles, it would be surprising if Jeep is using Alfa's engine management algorithms.
Also don't forget the transmission. This ZF 8 speed unit is light years better than the Cherokee's transmission. the transmission really is the best in the industry right now which is why so many manufacturers are using it.

It is not the quietest SUV inside, engine noise is more present than say a Lexus and there is enough road noise to let you know what type of surface you are driving on. The sound never gets droning though and the overall volume is very comparable to an Audi or BMW, Mazda, Honda, etc. however the mix of sound is different, there is less wind noise and more engine noise, and since it isn't competing with the wind, the road noise is more defined. Not really noisy in my opinion though. That particular clip you are referring to, the microphone was placed in the rear hatch area with the retractable cover closed to get the exhaust sound better as it wasn't coming out unless I was above 4000 RPM if the mic was in the front seat area...so it really is not representative of the sound in the passenger area of the car.

@@opinionsonautomobiles7666 Yes that makes sense because I had read many times that it was fairly quite inside.

PFFF Alfa Romeo Stelvio .... it's just a light SUV .. The *Alfa Matta* from the 50s was a real off-road vehicle! It was great in the area ... It's a shame that Alfa doesn't build a real SUV anymore ....

Fair criticism, my voice bothers me too!
I apologize for the production shortcomings of these first few videos. I assumed outside of a couple friends and family, no one would even watch them, and did this as something to keep me busy while going through a rough period in my professional/personal life. Giving it a name, logos, everything was just to stay busy and exercise creative muscles...get out of the house and go for a nice drive..take some pictures...spend time with the dogs outside... then draw some stuff and rediscover the fun of being creative...it was never intended to be anything more than a distraction for me personally.
Then I put it on RUclips and you wonderful people actually watch it. That has been a real learning experience.
I am truly sorry for the shortcomings on the videos, had I realized people would want to watch and would want to listen to what I had to say, it would have been produced with more attention given to the audio levels and tones, I would have also shot it using a 4k camera not a 720p one. As it was I just made sure to kill the vocal sibilance and cut the windnoise from the exterior shots, then used the same setting throughout because I was being lazy. This left the vocal audio sounding tinny, but since I figured no one would care, or probably ever hear it, I left it that way. The soundtrack was mainly because I don't like listening to myself...really. That it upsets people bothers me, so it will be fixed, however that anyone even cares I take as a compliment, so thank you.
I should not have underestimated all of you. Again, cannot apologize enough for that.
Very shortly I will be posting a 10k mile update which will finally address the audio/video production quality issues fully, and will also be a much more critical review of the vehicle now that I have enough experience with it to fully judge what it is like to live with on a day-to-day basis and am well past the "honeymoon" phase. After this I will be moving on to other makes and models and doing more informative videos on automotive news item and industry secrets.
Thank you all for the compliments and criticisms, please keep them coming!

'Add bass to your voice'.....he's fine Bog-dan. I took vocal diction and have a degree in voice performance among other things. For an amateur reviewer he is more than adequate in his vocal presentation. Some people think bow ties add personality and some people think they're just for Pee-wee Herman and 4 year olds.
