Rafa has got to be one of the most underrated managers in the history:
    - Won La Liga with Valencia beating Real Madrid and Barca
    - Took Valencia to CL finals.
    - Won the CL with Liverpool completing the greatest comeback in CL history.
    - Lead Newcastle to a comfortable 10th place finish despite having one of the worst squads in the league.

It's hard to tell i remember when he wanted to swap Xabi Alonso with Barry which would have been problematic ... but on the hand... he did bring Fernando Torres, which was a good signing.

    • @glammer
      @glammer 5 лет назад +4

@@johni9274 He didn't want to sell Alonso. He wanted Barry and Keane for a left-sided partnership. Bellamy had just been made City's player of the year with Barry behind him on the left. Rafa was given Keane and told to sell to buy Barry. Nobody would say Barry is a better individual player than Alonso but people forget that Steve McLaren had put Barry into the England team with Gerrard instead of Lampard and turned results around. Is Barry better than Lampard? No, but in that England team he was. That's when Rafa got interested in Barry. Barry was also able to play in more positions, something Rafa liked in players. Alonso had also been injured for almost a season, come back and been injured again. Those are the problematic decisions media luvvies and fans don't have to make. And what happened when Alonso was put up for sale? One offer of £12m from Juventus. Where were all the brilliant European managers bidding for this midfield genius? The whole thing seemed to spur Alonso on and he had maybe his best season following that, which got Real interested. For a bit more context, they paid £25m for him at the same time they paid £80m for Ronaldo and £56m for Kaka. We all loved Alonso but there's been a lot of revisionism over that episode.

Such an underrated manager. Say what you want about his style of play, the guy is a tactical genius. He played chess with footballers. Personally, I loved how he set us up at Liverpool:
    Four at the back
Two defensive midfielders who could play the ball from deep
A box to box player who could do everything
Two wide forwards who played simple passes, or shot on sight of goal
    A central striker
Everyone criticised his methods, but it's funny how you see variations of 4-3-3 all the time in the Premier League these days. Rafa and Jose were doing it before everyone else. That 2008-09 team with Xabi Alonso, Mascherano and Gerrard playing together in the middle was incredible. If it wasn't for the injury to Torres and too many drawn games, I feel like the title would have been a done deal. I was so glad to see him do well at Newcastle, and he's one of the few big-name managers to take control of a struggling team - and do so well without a decent budget

This is why he is idolized at Liverpool. Legend. Takes a decent team and improves them every time. Thanx Rafa for Number 5!

I love what he said about if the margins for winning trophies is so small that doesn't mean you're not a good manager. People say Spurs aren't a big club cause they don't winning anything smh

Rafa what a gent, what a heart as well. Never forgotten for Istanbul and making LFC a European force again for a few years. He got under Mourinho & Fergie’s noses massively. Not forgetting his contributions to Hillsborough, he’s class. Who knows what he would of done long term? But for those 2 idiot owners.
Rafa 5 years at Anfield - 2 Champs league finals, UEFA super cup final, 1 FIFA World club final, 1 League cup final, 1 FA cup final, very close to winning the league in 09’, ended up second, too many draws.
LFC is in good hands now for sure, another class guy in Kloppo.
