Winning the ECL was one of the greatest nights of my life. What he did at Valencia winning 2 league titles is next to impossible, but he did it on a fraction of the budget the 2 big guns have. Nice to see Rafa’s thoughts about that night. Dudek’s save from Shevchenko was one of the greatest saves ever.
This is one of the best interviews because it gives you great insight into what the manager and player were thinking & communicating at halftime and during the game (including during the penalties). It shows you what Rafa felt he missed during the 1st half tactically and what he needed to do to make things better. This was more about tactics for him and less about hoping to motivate and emotionally galvanize a possibly shellshocked club.
To add to my comment: Some managers have a single minded self belief about them - they transfer that emotion & belief to the players and the players rally and play better. Rafa is different. He already knows that he has a team full of character players (that he knowingly built into the system himself via signings & player development over months and years). So his job in that moment of the final was to tactically improve his team and hope for the best thereafter. As good fortune would have it, Liverpool delivered a fantastic win!
In the 2003-04 season he won La Liga and the UEFA Cup with Valencia, that was a massive achievement and what prompted Liverpool to sign him to replace Houllier
Rafa seems to be a man with a lot of humility.... Jamie seemed to want to dramatize the whole event. Rafa seemed to speak down on the event as if to make the events seem more relatable.
Rafa looking so young alongside Steven Gerrard in photo together with cup. Always loved garcia volley goal against juventus. One of the first goals I ever watched on my phone. Grainy as hell but still beautiful.
What amazes me is the comeback. That Milan team was one of the best or maybe the best in the world at that time. The way we came back in the 2nd half, the desire and will. We have that spirit again since 2018 I think. And he talked alot about character, we surely had that there and also now back again. Amazing how much that influences a game (and tactics too of course)
when you look at the spreadsheet of both sides.. liverpool was full of average players only had 2 world class players in xabi alonso and steven gerrard and that milan team was full of world class players and legends in every single position... no champions league game can ever compare to this miracle comeback and will always be the greatest comeback and greatest champions league final in history... a true underdog story
Amazing watching this brings back the memories the lows my dad and me felt the first half , Milan played us off the park but the second half extra time penalties were amazing and a amazing memory to share with my dad. The best final ever and an example of why football is more than a game!
What a pleasure seeing a manager and a player analysing a legendary match that they featured together in. From a neutral point of view at least, that was class. Would love to see more of similar!
I'm from '92 and i know everyone in Milan team, in Liverpool team just 3 players: Xabi, Gerrard, Dudek. What Rafa did in that dressing room after the half time will be legendary.
Off course the best final off all time.he won the C.L in his first season..and remember the F.A cup final against west ham .if u ask me that was also the best F.A cup final

We had carra and Gerrard shouting orders now we got VVD and hendo carrying the torch 💪🏽
Hendo brilliant tonight
And Milner
Henderson is a genius. Homegrown talent. With responsibilities tossed upon him at a young age. I respect him a lot. And pray Scott McTominay will turn out like him.
@@bernardwadding especially this season my captain he's on another level
@@scorpiusjoecrux2039 Hendo is not from Liverpool he came through the Mackem youth team and made 71 league appearances for Sunderland.
Just imagine, for the fans is like an emotional comeback while for the manager everything is well thought out and is more of a tactical thing. Just look at what Rafa was thinking during half time. Legend.
How Liverpool beat that ac Milan team is beyond ridiculous. Every player in the Milan team is a world renowned world class player. Fair play
They didn’t have Steven Gerrard though…..
@@dannythegent1 honestly that game Dudek and Carra just randomly became the best CB/GK pair in the world. They snubbed out so much chances
how rafa managed to win two la liga titles above the galaticos and barca is crazy. he has my respect
"Kaka was killing us between the lines" LMAO, Kaka was a monster, that through pass for Crespo's goal, bruh!!
Big up Rafa we will never forget how you you took the club to your heart !! The way you was totally involved the Justice for the 96 !And met the family you will always be a legend on the fields on Anfiled road !!
Whether you like liverpool or not you cannot deny that champions league final was one of the most memorable nights in history.
Can't get my head around the fact that that game happened almost 15 years ago. I remember it so well. What a night.
Just realized it was 15 years after our last league title and.........perhaps 15 years later we'll win our next league title??
Heh.
You really can't get a better defence than Cafu/Nesta/ Stam/Maldini, even if all of them (except Nesta) were beyond their prime in 2005. Maldini and Cafu amazingly won another CL in 2007, and so did Inzaghi...
most of them are on their prime.
it's just makes the sport way more interesting, because sometimes unlikely stuff like this makes the sport really beautiful.
Lifetime arsenal fan, ended up routing for Liverpool that night... there was just something spiritual about that 2nd half, never forgot those fans at halftime just incredible... then stevie scores and starts to raise the fans even more.. spine tingling... one of the most incredible games
Never been a more talented team than that ac Milan team
@Christian Cullen Juventus were better than Milan that season also. Their team was ridiculous.
They didn't even win the league...
Ancelotti doesn't do well in leagues. He excels at knockout competitions.
Barça's 2010-2011 is by far the greatest team to ever play football and if you disagree you're just clueless
Abdou MC Read what I said. I never said it was the best. I said most talented. Meaning the most world class players I’ve ever seen in one team. Club wise
Gosh this video is on another level! Imagine the level of detail that goes into coaching and making these decisions, while also being under the pressure of time and the occasion
That Milan team was brilliant, look at the bench Rui Costa
And to think 14/15 years later, they aren't even playing the champions, well, not even the Europa league.
It's sad.
Costa was finished by then.
Thank you Sky Sports, Carra and Rafa for this ❤️
Its one of the most astonishing live games I have ever watched. As much as Liverpool was my team, that Milan team was just outstanding.
Plus a UEFA Cup
I wish Jaime would let Rafa riff a bit more..legend
Having said that I love Rafa. Legend. European Champions,. Super Cup Champions and World Champions. How good does that sound.
World class manager
This Liverpool team never gave up - such a great display of heart, courage and determination!
Jamie really has got the hang of this hasn’t he... almost like him as much as I do G.Nev
Still baffled we won 15 years later, a miracle indeed. Beautiful night and amazing game. Thank you Rafa
Rafas record speaks for it self, one of the greats 👍
Rafa is a Liverpool legend no matter what❤
Rafa seems to be a man with a lot of humility....
Harry Kewell was a great player. Just injured far too often.
True. Maybe in top 5 left wingers in the world in his prime, especially in those Leeds days.
Yes, I think even Rafa Benitez compared him to Steven Gerrard in terms of ability
@@paulie2476 more a second striker than an out and out winger.
Harry Kewell for me was the best header of the ball in the premiership. But injured too often.
By the time we got Kewell, he was essentially a cripple. Same with Zenden, top winger but too many problems
That AC Milan team was lit !
A
Liverpool also beat unstoppable Chelsea in 2005 if you remember. Sometimes the spirit and destiny beats quality
A
From 2005-2010 Chelsea were insanely powerful. Yet they didn’t win a CL. They won 2012 when they were so weak and nobody expected them to win
These 2 men always make me smile! Just a little sad they did not get to lift the premier league title 10 years ago
when you look at the spreadsheet of both sides.. liverpool was full of average players only had 2 world class players in xabi alonso and steven gerrard and that milan team was full of world class players and legends in every single position... no champions league game can ever compare to this miracle comeback and will always be the greatest comeback and greatest champions league final in history... a true underdog story
Amazing watching this brings back the memories the lows my dad and me felt the first half , Milan played us off the park but the second half extra time penalties were amazing and a amazing memory to share with my dad. The best final ever and an example of why football is more than a game!
Liverpool was a huuggeee underdog in that final for him to tactically changing stuff at half time make him a tactical genius
What a pleasure seeing a manager and a player analysing a legendary match that they featured together in. From a neutral point of view at least, that was class. Would love to see more of similar!
The change of formation was genius
That insane starting XI, and even Rui Costa on the bench for Milan.. what a team.
English dictionary;
Word : Character
Rafa : Yes
Always wondered where Brendan Rodgers got it from.
I'm from '92 and i know everyone in Milan team, in Liverpool team just 3 players: Xabi, Gerrard, Dudek.
What Rafa did in that dressing room after the half time will be legendary.
Im amazed by seeing Gerrard interview saying they had tension between them
It's not surprising though. Rafa doesn't really have friends or loyalties.
Rafa is a tactical genius absolutely fascinating insight into his management skills.
After this interview he gonna get a dream move to a big club , rafa a legend, what he did for liverpool and newcastle... get the Bayern's job Rafa
I loved this manager. Liverpool have had their fair share of genius managers. That,s why we are the greatest team in English football history
Greatest night in football history
Off course the best final off all time.he won the C.L in his first season..and remember the F.A cup final against west ham .if u ask me that was also the best F.A cup final
What a fascinating conversation and how good to see Rafa showing how intelligent and articulate he is instead of just the usual post match twaddle we always get from managers and players. Newcastle and Arsenal's loss.
Sky should fire their graphics team. They were supposed to put up the AC Milan team in the 2005 final, not the World XI dream team of the decade. Schoolboy error!
Missed opportunity here to hear so much from Rafa but Carragher just couldn't help himself.. just had to continually show how football intelligent he is.
It seems to me as if Jaime is trying to undermine Rafa, Rafa explanation of his mindset at the time was brilliant, underated manager.
I still love Rafa to bits.
Crazy how that team won it, when you compare the two

This was a delightful treat. Thanks!
Carra, "Rafa I will ask you a question, did you believe at half time"
Rafa, "I will ask you, Did you hear the fans", I didnt hear, ...the rest is history, what an absolute legend Rafa you are :)
Rafa i love you thanks for the great memories!
With out a doubt the most exciting Cup Final Ever. Us Liverpool supporters will never ever forget it . Thanks Rafa! !

Am a Chelsea fan but I appreciate this man as our interim coach.
