As a Liverpool fan I have always had a huge respect for the things Gary Nevillle says - He sees that little extra when he mentions the extraordinary Leicester winning the league with less Tools and Armour - wise indeed and I must agree - that has to be one of or maybe even the greatest ever sporting acheivement
Honestly Leicester had no competition, they won it with 81 points 10 points clear of Arsenal with 71 points....... all the 'top four' teams finished in the 60's (very poor season indeed). The way i look at it the best teams win with some adversary (a title race) imho the 18-19 season was the two best clubs in recent history going head to head!! none of this win your home games and play for the point away (cough Arsenal...) this was a proper set up to win every game and the two teams won everything (all domestic trophies, Champions league and Club world cup) and finished 97 v's 98!! how many title races have you seen like that!!
Even as a Liverpool fan I have to give the greatest football acheivement down to Cloughie winning the league straight from promotion and following it up with those European Cups-that'll never be equalled dare I say.
I really like how you guys tried to actually come up with a metric for measuring these teams as opposed to just going based on memory or opinion, really good stuff and Carra especially seemed to know a lot about the older teams, it was an incredible discussion about English football, hard pressed to find a better one anywhere.
Totally agreed. It was so good because they weren't comparing teams, but rather just discussing each one on their own merits in turn. And Carragher's memory and knowledge of football is encyclopedic.
For context, this is the points system when applied to teams across Europe: 1. Ajax (1970-1973) - 30 pts 2. Barcelona (2008-2011) - 28 pts =3. Steaua Bucharest (1985-1988), Real Madrid (2015-2018) - 25 pts =4. Real Madrid (1956-1959), Celtic (1966-1969), Bayern Munich (1973-1976) - 24 pts =5. Real Madrid (1955-1958), Liverpool (1975-1978) - 23 pts =6. Real Madrid (1957-1960), Barcelona (2014-2017), Bayern Munich (2017-2020) - 22 pts =7. Inter (1963-1966) , PSV Eindhoven (1986-1989), Red Star Belgrade (1989-1992), Man Utd (2006-2009) - 21 pts =8. Benfica (1959-1962), Liverpool (1981-1984), AC Milan (1991-1994), Ajax (1993-1996), Juventus (1995-1998), Man Utd (1998-2001), Porto (2002-2005), Inter (2007-2010) - 20 pts =9. AC Milan (1987-1990), Real Madrid (1999-2002) - 19 pts =10. Nottingham Forest (1977-1980), Juventus (1983-1986), Barcelona (1990-1993), AC Milan (1992-1995) - 18 pts 11. Porto (1984-1987) - 16 pts =12. Stade de Reims (1957-1960), Marseille (1990-1993), AC Milan (2002-2005) - 15 pts
Mr Daniel Pudz RIP MUM I think any football fan with knowledge will understand that winning the leagues I mentioned are far harder than winning the Dutch league. This is why the Dutch league isn’t mentioned as a top league and the ones I mentioned get far more representation in Europe. A real waste of a comment and you look very stupid.
@@welshlad6427 The Dutch league isn't the same in recent times, but there was a time when the Dutch teams dominated in the early 70s. Feyenoord won the European Cup in 1970, but of course it's difficult to compare different leagues, let alone eras.
MNF really is the best football show around. Knowledgable and compelling debates always. Must-watch TV. Wish they'd put them up on youtube for free all the time so i didn't have to use naughty streams to watch lol
As a Leeds fan totally agree with what Carra said, the 3 year format is a little harsh on that Leeds team because really it stayed as one core unit for nearly a decade, even the 1975 European cup final team was very similar to the team from the mid 60s
Glad to see jamie and gary emphasising the importance of the UEFA CL / European Cup, something which was overlooked when people have been discussing city as the best ever.
@DP24s Music Nah.. Only for United fan i suppose. Almost everyone always regards Ucl as the 2nd most prestigious cup to win after World Cup. Which automatically makes it the most prestigious one in terms of club competitions.
Came for the debate, stayed for the knowledge. The only league I regularly follow is La Liga and I sometimes watch highlights of the big games in England, Germany and Italy. I couldn't help but to listen intently to these two gentlemen speak about their home league's history, loved it. Much love from the States🇺🇸
@@Rocksteady365mac it's a great league to watch. You can get the same excitement from watching any of the top 4 leagues. I consider Ligue 1 to be more on level with the Portuguese, Dutch and Russian leagues.
Clough at Derby County was an insane achievement too. Got promoted from 2nd Division & following season he won the 1st Division with them too like he would later do at Forest. Got Derby to European Cup Semi too were they were robbed by the ref in Italy when they played Juventus in 1973
Truly miss that 2008 side. Went to old Trafford when they played sporting. 1-0 down at half time.. Ronaldo free kick to win it in the 90th minute. Incredible
The fact that both Man City and Liverpool of the last 3 seasons would be on the same amount of points if they won all available trophies shows how amazing both teams are
Would be interesting to see how good they would have been when playing on pitches during the winters of the 70s . In comparison they play on bowling greens today
No Offence, If any of the top 8 English teams won all trophies available to them over the last three seasons they would be right up there as the greatest- it doesn't apply to City & Liverpool Only. If Liverpool wins the Treble this year, they'll have 21 Points - puts them joined 2nd - not too shabby considering they won nothing in 2018 and finished 4th in the league. City, however, cannot win the league this season - but if they win the rest: CL, FA Cup & League Cup it will also push them to 21 Points.
I think the reason they didn't include the current sides is because the Premier league and the English top flight in general is the weakest competition wise its ever been
Neville and carragher is pure gold together. Never could u imagine them to could come together I've seriously never seen two people with such knowledge of the game and how they bounce of each other

I can’t believe Gary didn’t elaborate on the Busby Babes, a homegrown very young side full of England internationals they won leagues together and reached the semis of the EC before dying so young. Especially Duncan Edwards who was 21 when he died in Munich, Sir Bobby who is probably England’s greatest ever said he’s the best player he’s ever seen. The way Sir Matt was able to come back and build a whole new team was incredible
He tried to elaborate on them, but doesn't know enough and probably didn't consult the notes enough! What he SHOULD have elaborated on was the United side that won the EC in 68 - the name "George Best" was not even mentioned...how can I take this commentary seriously?
The fact is any team nowadays would run most older teams into the ground from the simple fact that they have history on their side tactically plus advancement in medicine and sports science.
It'd somewhat depend on which era that dream match would take place. It's a softer, almost no contact game now. If a defender's little toenail touches an attacker's leg during a tackle, the player collapses and VAR or the ruleset says it's a foul. Can you imagine Raheem Sterling playing in the FA Cup, even in the 90's? Rougher, tougher play style, looser ruleset and ripped up pitches. Yo-yo teams weren't able to dip into TV funds back then to maintain their surfaces. If ANY last generation backwards team on this list played against current day Liverpool or the unplayable City in today's day and age obviously they'd be run off the pitch and half the team would be booked. It wouldn't even be close. It'd be a bit closer if they went back in time and played, though.
The players still possess the same quality. Maybe more as you didn’t have to be as dedicated and as athletic as you do now. If you put those players in to the modern game and allowed them to get fitter, they’d be just as good or better
Yeh United reached 3 champions league final and beaten by the best team the world has ever seen. Liverpool only won champions league while other European gaints are shite. Won against spurs explains everything.
@@XY1541-s3v First of all, if we are talking about the 3 year/season period that they are using, then United only reached 2 UCL finals between 2007/2008 to 2009/2010 (3 seasons). To include the 2011 final you would have to stretch that to a 4 year/season period. Secondly, to say Liverpool could only win the UCL because other European giants were trash just goes to show how much of a hater you are. You only mention the 2019 final against Spurs (confirmation bias) to insinuate that Liverpool can only win CLs when other teams are doing badly but completely ignore the fact that Liverpool have won the UCL in the modern era against great sides. For example, in the 2005 final against an AC Milan team stacked with GREAT PLAYERS like Kaka, Maldini, Nesta, Jaap Stam, Pirlo, Seedorf, Cafu and Shevchenko. The bottom line is, what Liverpool have achieved in the last two years has been fantastic. Whether you like them or not, there is no denying that fact. P.S I am a Barcelona fan. Before you start assuming I'm a Liverpool fan
@@Benjamin-sq9co 2005 Liverpool team was not even good. Why would anyone hate, what's point of hating. Jamie taking dig at Gary ". I'm not talking about before PL era.

Barcelona heavily dependent on Messi still fixing sacking Managers looseing matches regularly. Madrid aging squad struggling without Ronaldo. Bayern still building their squad. Perfect time for them, right moment perfectly build squad to dominate. Nothing taking away from them. Liverpool board did a great job. They deserve to win after so many years of trying.
Don’t forget that after winning the European cup in 1977 that Kevin Keegan left and Bob Paisley went out and bought Daglish, Souness and Hansen. So those three players were in both those great teams.
For anyone interested the Wolves team of 1957-58, 58-59, 59-60 (the one they referenced) would have scored 11 points due to them winning back-to-back League titles inn 1957-58 (4 points) and 58-59 (4 points) and coming runners up in the league in 59-60 (1 point) and also winning the FA Cup (2 points). These 11 points would of placed them 8th. Think its a fair mention of how good this team was and would be the earliest on the list.
It's mad when you look at the 2 Liverpool Teams included in this - during the "transitional period" in between the 76-78 & 82-84 sides there was another 3 year run where they won: 78-79 - League Title 79-80 - League Title 80-81 - European Cup and League Cup Which gives 14 points using the system in this video, which is enough to get to sixth on the list. Dalglish team in the 80's can get quite high as well, depending on how you pick the 3 years. Man Utd have a couple of similar "lesser teams" during the Ferguson period that could finish quite high too: 91-92 - League Cup & Second in the League 92-93 - League Title 93-94 - League Title and FA Cup And 95-96 - League Title and FA Cup 96-97 - League Title And either year before or after they finished Second in the League. If they went with a top 20 instead you'd probably have close to half the teams coming from Liverpool and Utd (and the majority of them in the top 10).
And the Cup Winner's Cup in 1991 for United, if that first period was over three years. The footage of Hughes smashing that ball against Barcelona makes me smile. Amazing stuff.
@@christianrayner913 because they're comparing United and Liverpool not Carragher and Neville. United did underperform in Europe given how good they were.
Liverpool are the most successful English team--ever! It's quite fitting that they've chose one of the Liverpool sides as the best English team of all time. The 75-78 Liverpool side won 4 European trophies in 3 yrs (European Cup x2, Euefa Cup, & European Super Cup). That blows all other achievements out the water! YNWA!
@@malcolmgerald It was top 2 in the champions league that year as it had changed for 1997-98 season, Newcastle played that year. In 1996-97 Man United made the semis and got knocked out by Dortmund who won that year. In 1997-98 despite injuries they made the quarters. 1999 was still a great achievement. I would say Arsenal pushed United all that year and made them perform. It kept the squad focused in all domestic competitions and that helped keep momentum in big European games. Domestic football also seemed to be more competative as the points spread was not so far from top to bottom. You dont see that so much now. The worst teams struggle to get 20 points and the top teams break 80 points as a matter of course.
Gary refusing to make eye contact with Jamie at the end after that "but not abroad" dig... 😂😂😂 I love these 2. I hope we get to see them together on this show for many, many years to come! Love their insight - almost as much as I love their banter!
These two are the best duo hands down! No-one comes close. Can't believe Neville missed a trick at the end though, when he failed to mention the fact that United 2006-2009 holds the record for the longest unbeaten run in UCL history. If the roles were reversed, no way Jamie passes up the chance to use it😂😂
It is good bantz to be fair. But playing in the Premier league, with how competitive it is and champions league at the same time, it's almost impossible to win both. United are the only English team to even get to a champions league final and win the Premier league in the same season. All 4 UCL finals (winning 2) they got to, they won the league the same year. But Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool all reached UCL finals, (Chelsea and Liverpool won it) but never won the league in the same season. No other team that's won the Premier league, ever won the UCL in the same year. Let alone got to the final. It's incredibly difficult. So as much as a English side could have in the modern game, United did. But I think the main problem is Ferguson always wanted the league title.
Man United fan here. Not heard amazing things about carragher and some of his past actions. But one thing I notice from this video alone is the respect he has for not only his once upon a time rival but also the other players he competed against during his career. Nice to see.

Real madrid 15 to 18 real madrid won 3 champions league and 1 la life, so 19 points. Real madrid from 55 to 58 won 3 european cups and 2 la Ligas meaning the would have 23 points in this metric Manchester united 99 is not even the best english team so I'm not even going to entertain that soz
Joseph McCann The Real Madrid side of 15-18 won 3 UCLs (15 points) won one La Liga (4 points), came runner up in the league once (1 point) won one supercopa de espana in 2017 (1 point) and won a Eufa super cup in 2017 (1 point). They also won two Club World Cups in 17 and 18 (2 points): Thus totalling 24 points. That’s just a quick calculation it could well be more.

Coming back to this video in 2023, Pep's Man City team from 2020/21 - 2022/23 would be top of the list with 23 points. 20/21: League win +4, League cup +1, European cup runner's up +2 = 7 21/22: League win +4 = 4 22/23: European cup win +5, League win +4, FA Cup +2, UEFA Super Cup +1 = 12 7+4+12 = 23 When you then factor in that City also won the league in 2 out of the 3 prior seasons (2017/18, 2018/19), with one of those teams breaking the record for most ever points in a season (100), you realize that this is likely the greatest club team England has ever seen.
Great listening to these two discuss this. They mention Arsenal (1930's), Liverpool (1980's) & Man Utd (twice; 1990's & 2000's) being the only English top flight teams to win three league titles in a row. That is incorrect. There has been four & In the 1920's Huddersfield won three in a row (1924,1925 & 1926). 😊👍
It's a fair point, Liverpool had more dominance in Europe 40-50 years ago but I feel like sometimes people forget Utd were in three Champions League finals between 2008 and 2011. The only thing stopping Fergie from taking four European cups instead of two, was the greatest club side in modern history in Pep's Barcelona. No arguing Liverpool's achievements in Europe though. Utd the better club domestically. Shows how far out in front these two clubs are though from City, Chelsea etc.
@marble hall Highbury grancanyon1970 Liverpool got English teams banned? It was an accident caused by trouble between two sets of fans. Only Liverpool and the English were punished by a corrupt and English-hating UEFA. Nothing has changed with UEFA still corrupt as ever and favouring Spanish teams in general. Liverpool were dominating Europe at the time and had done for years. A chance to ban them and they took it. It was a horrible tragedy caused by an accident that resulted from crowd trouble between Juventus and Liverpool fans. I have spoken to those who were there on the night. Both groups of fans involved were responsible just as much as eachother. The wall collapsed as a result of both sets of fans attempting to scale it. Not JUST Liverpool fans. It also killed Liverpool supporters. Not just Juventus supporters. Although, by bad fortune it happened to collapse more-so towards the Juventus fans. Blaming "Liverpool" is extremely ignorant and childish.
Who’s here after 2019/20 Liverpool have failed to win the UCL, FA Cup, League Cup, and then bottled their invincible record against Watford, got bantered for so long through the lockdown, celebrated so much when they realised football was coming back, celebrated when they finally won the Prem, came back and drew to Everton, lost 4-0 to city, drew against Burnley and recently lost 2-1 to Arsenal and are now probably not even considered one of the top 2 or 3 PL teams?
Dalglish’ Liverpool of 87,88 & 89 should be in this... clearly. But the European ban at the time means they don’t get the “points” debated in this... crazy. It was arguably the greatest side ever.

@Cool Dude mate I have watched both teams. Liverpool did not face any strong team in Europe accept Juventus. United faced Barcelona, Roma, Milan etc. The United team was also better. Combined 11 Van der sar, Neal, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, souness, scholes, case, Ronaldo, Rooney, Kenny Dalglish
It's interesting when Jamie talks at the end about Sir Alex not dominating abroad to remember that no team in that era dominated abroad in that era (from about the mid 90s to 2010 when United dominated the league). Perhaps the only team that "dominated" in that era were Juventus who reached 3 consecutive finals but lost 2. Real Madrid and Barcelona reached 3 finals (and won all) in a 15 year period. Manchester United and AC Milan reached 3 finals and won 2. It was a really competitive time with some truly exceptional teams.
Real won three times in five seasons. Also Ajax, coming from a smaller league to reach two finals and a semi final in a row, is also quite the achievement.
I like how Gary Neville nearly called Jürgen klopps name before mentioning pep guardiola at the beginning of this video, he looked like he was about to throw up and have a stroke 😂

Brian Clough also took Derby from 2nd division to win the league title and European cup Semi final, which they would have won but for a corrupt referee.
Pre-1997, I would agree with EC 5 points and League 4 points, however nowadays I would probably make both equal since Champions League now is basically a combination of EC/UEFA Cup (with 2-4 places added from UEFA Cup, for all that important revenue). I would also bump up the FA/League Cups by a point (especially pre-2000). Todays’ Man City/Liverpool dominance (aside from fitness) can’t beat the level of competitiveness of the 90s (when you had teams like Man United, Arsenal, Leeds, Blackburn, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Norwich, Newcastle, and Tottenham all competiting for the title).

What amazes me about the Forest achievement is that the Liverpool that just had the 3 year period of success that scores the most points by this criteria. Arguably they got better during the years Forest won as the side changed personel for improved players. The signings improved, Liverpool had a 68 point season but Forest beat them to win League cups. Won Divsion one and knocked the Liverpool team who were the holders of the European cup out of the competition then win it that year and again the next. All after having being promoted from Division 2 the year before. It is an unbelievable achievement. Imagine how improbable that would be to do in any season in the near future. It is unbelievable.

I really like how you guys tried to actually come up with a metric for measuring these teams as opposed to just going based on memory or opinion, really good stuff and Carra especially seemed to know a lot about the older teams, it was an incredible discussion about English football, hard pressed to find a better one anywhere.
best team and players in England ever 1966 brilliant on poor pitches good players now except they cannot get up from a fair tackle

The fact is any team nowadays would run most older teams into the ground from the simple fact that they have history on their side tactically plus advancement in medicine and sports science.
Ita about what they achieved in their tome not comparing teams of today to teams of then
How old are you?

It's mad when you look at the 2 Liverpool Teams included in this - during the "transitional period" in between the 76-78 & 82-84 sides there was another 3 year run where they won:
78-79 - League Title
79-80 - League Title
80-81 - European Cup and League Cup
Which gives 14 points using the system in this video, which is enough to get to sixth on the list.
Dalglish team in the 80's can get quite high as well, depending on how you pick the 3 years.
Man Utd have a couple of similar "lesser teams" during the Ferguson period that could finish quite high too:
91-92 - League Cup & Second in the League
92-93 - League Title
93-94 - League Title and FA Cup
And
95-96 - League Title and FA Cup
96-97 - League Title
And either year before or after they finished Second in the League.
If they went with a top 20 instead you'd probably have close to half the teams coming from Liverpool and Utd (and the majority of them in the top 10).

But Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool all reached UCL finals, (Chelsea and Liverpool won it) but never won the league in the same season.
You’re so petty😂😂
They're the earliest champions.
"Doesn't say how many points on the medal" no, but you do get a gold trophy for being unbeaten.
40:52 Carra wraps it up and smirks while Gary stares directly into the camera 😂😂😂
nottingham forest 🔥🔥
Magic
Dalglish’ Liverpool of 87,88 & 89 should be in this... clearly. But the European ban at the time means they don’t get the “points” debated in this... crazy. It was arguably the greatest side ever.
Agree, Sir Tom Finney said it was the best team he'd ever seen when they took 9 of Crystal Palace.
@@matthewsmith-rm6qc Totally - though I think it was actually after the 5-0 against Forrest… but whatever! :)
Bill Shankly laid the foundations of that great Liverpool team.
But Paisley took them to another level.
@@fraz6354 Klopp resurrected Liverpool back from the dead.
@@razer0072073 he has to retain the league. That will be his challenge now. It would be a great achievement cause Liverpool can't spend like City, United or Chelsea
@Darth Pepe mate I am praising Klopp the work he has done
Surely the most successful club should be on most trophies won in the in the birth of the clubs to current season not on a points system over 3 years biggest load of bxxxxcks ive ever heard typical sky broadcast
This current Man City side is on 23 points with the chance to make it 25 points if they win the super cup and club world cup !! Already joint first of their list with the chance to stand alone as the best. They would also tie with the Real Madrid side of 2015-2018 but would still be 3 points behind Pep's Barca and 5 points less than Cruyff's Ajax side of the 70s.
26:24 probably the best side in English top flight history was that Liverpool side of 1983/84
united 08 were better
@@akshatbetala2813 probably because you haven't seen any other English sides
@@tashrif46 I have watched football since 1979
@@akshatbetala2813 alright. Then you should know sir.
But Ajax won it only once though. So it's not dominantion by the standards Gary and Jamie set.
Utd also won a Cup Winners Cup in the 90s with Ferguson
I like how Gary Neville nearly called Jürgen klopps name before mentioning pep guardiola at the beginning of this video, he looked like he was about to throw up and have a stroke 😂
Such a shame that the Liverpool 87/88-89/90 team didn't make the cut because of the European ban. Barnes / Beardsley / Aldridge possibly the best striking partnership of all time
Yeah they were a brilliant team.
UEFA hate the English, even if Liverpool should’ve been banned for max 2 years, it was hardly necessary to ban every English team
Yes that team has to be there
Quality debate. Love Carragher and Neville always talking a good game.
I love that they get nostalgic about other teams, and times
Bob paisley is the most underrated manager in world football and its sad to admit even in Liverpool fan circles he is underrated....
he was a great man ynwa
He's in Bill Shankly's shadow.
Paisley is one of the greatest ever. 20 trophies in 9 years which includes 3 Champions League titles.
@@woodsmen9844 absolutely, in modern era mangers are gauged against their predecessors success while in the case of paisely he was gauged against the charisma of shankely...
Brian Clough also took Derby from 2nd division to win the league title and European cup Semi final, which they would have won but for a corrupt referee.
Clough was definitely something special.
But he did better at the mighty redss
Shame blinkered FA never got him into England.
Zee Zee What about Leeds he did shite for leeds
3:03 the looks on their faces after jamie drops the 'they never did it in europe' is priceless lmao

But Carra is a club legend of the club whose team was rated the best English team in history.
Probably the best video I've seen from Sky Sports. Fair and quality analysis
Best English club side ever is currently top of the league end of. Numbers don’t lie.
The greatest English football team ever is the Liverpool team from 1976 to 1984 7 league Titles out off 9 3 league titles on the bounce 4 European cups 2 on the bounce 3 European trophies on the bounce first English team to win a treble of league title European cup and league cup 4 league cups in a row 1 Uefa cup and 1 Uefa super cup they were a pure winning machine and true greatness .7 leagues 76,77,79,80,82,83,84 .4 European cups 77,78,81,84 .4 league cups 81,82,83,84 .1 Uefa cup 76 and .1 Uefa super cup 77
Damn right mate , people dont like admitting it and try to ignore it and hope it goes away , AND ITS LIVERPOOL , LIVERPOOL F.C THEYRE BY FAR THE GREATEST TEAM THE WORLD HAD EVER SEEN !!!!!!!
Preach on brother
Greatest by achievement without doubt. But the best team ever to watch was Liverpool 1987/88 Barnes, Beardsley and Aldridge that was fantasy football amazing.
And if it weren't for the European ban, would of been a couple more trophies!
The old European cup was a joke compared to the Champions League.
In 1977 to win the cup Liverpool beat the great teams;
Crusaders - from NI
Trabzonspor - from Turkey
Saint Etienne - from France
Zurich - from Switzerland
And then the grand final against the great powerhouse of Borussia Monchengladbach 😂
78 they beat Club Brugge in the final. In 79 it was Malmo FF.
Why did they discredit the invincible title just like that for points, it’s only been done once in the PL and it’s very special
Doesn’t make them one of the greats though does it really. Several clubs have been on longer unbeaten runs than that in the English top tier.
@@jasonsender6568 but none of them done it and won the league undefeated
No one seems to acknowledge the amount of French players in that side who won the 1998 world cup and the 2000 euros that I think should be taken into account.
Life of the Commission and? It’s an achievement that doesn’t actually mean anything. You don’t get another trophy for it, it’s not as if arsenal didn’t lose a single game all season as well. It’s just PL.
DP24s Music Forest, Liverpool, City. I said several, not loads.
I fell in love with Tottenham when I came across old games to watch. They were so enthralling for that time in football.

Some brilliant football teams in that list.
Would love to see Sky do an episode of best European teams using the same points system.

Carragher mentioned that the three best Liverpool players were Dalgliesh, Souness and Hansen all Scottish.
