Greatest captain in the history of the league without a doubt. The ways in which he excelled weren't as pleasing to the eye as Scholes' or Lampard's attributes but there is no possible way you could leave him out of an all time Premier League XI. That's the beauty of football. There's so much variety, you can't really pick the perfect 11. If they build 3 teams with 3 different formation, we'll have much better conclusion. 4-4-2 with Gerrard and Lampard has been tried and tetsted way too many times. It just couldn't work out. He's right though. These days, especially with full-backs, everyone wants them to be brilliant at going forward and it often feels like that becomes more of a priority than their ability to defend well. The best defenders are those who do their primary job brilliantly, and it's a bonus if they happen to be good at going forward as well. Greatest Premier League XI of all time ( My Picks ):
GK: Peter Cech ( Arguable because Peter Schmeichel deserves it to the same extent )
LB: Ashley Cole ( Pretty straightforward )
CBs: John Terry and Nemanja Vidic ( Rio Ferdinand [ Vidic has more POTY, therefore the choice ] and Virgil Van Dijik [ Too early to judge ] are probably the best alternatives for these two )
RB: Garry Neville ( Again pretty straightforward )
DMF: Patrick Viera ( One of the biggest reasons for Arsenal's success and heart of their midfield during his prime )
CAMs: Kevin De Bruyne and Frank Lampard ( Ok, I do know that KDB is arguable but I picked him over Gerrard cuz Gerrard contributed towards his team massively but was unfortunate enough to win a PL title. Meanwhile KDB is one of the greatest midfielders of this generation. Also Paul Scholes and Roy Keane deserve mentions cuz they were just too gud during their time, they just don't fit in the squad )
RW: Wayne Rooney ( Arguable one but he is the only player in PL history to score 200+ goals and 100+ assists, extremely prolific and probably the biggest asset to Man U's huge success in the late 00's and early 10's)
LW: Cristiano Ronaldo ( The most arguable one in this list imo but Ronaldo was a beast in his young days, not to mention on his return back to the prem he was the best player at shitty Man U team and also the last PL player [ so far ] to win a Ballon d'or. This man completely deserves his spot )
ST: Thierry Henry ( Personally for me, this man is the greatest PL player of all time. Ik at the striker position Alan Shearer is probably the best pick but Rooney and Ronaldo are the best players at their position and coudn't have left Henry out of the all time squad, but Shearer is surely a PL legend )
MANAGER: Sir Alex Ferguson ( Any other answer is wrong )
Honorable Mentions in FW positions: Denis Bergkamp, Ryan Giggs and Mohammed Salah

4-3-3 formation. Cech - Neville - Rio - JT - Cole - Keane - Scholes - Lampard - Hazard - Henry - Ronaldo. Left out Lampard as you don't need as many goals from midfield with that front 3, and Scholes is the better passer. I think all three of Lampard, Gerrard and Scholes could have played together. The problem was England crowbarring players into a flat 4-4-2 formation (like the one on this video) that couldn't accommodate them...as well as insisting on playing two strikers in an old fashion model. It's so obvious that it should have been:
    Scholes
    Gerrard Lampard
Thats England's midfield should have setup. Scholes playing as the holding midfielder with Gerrard and Lampard playing in front of him.

    • @antoniovargas589

I agree, but I also there are other factors which hindered England's performances at major tournaments e.g. the media. I remember going into WC2006 and WC2010 that the media put so much pressure on the team and labeling them as favourites for the tournament. Don't get me wrong, in 2006 on paper they were but the level of pressure on the team was unfair.

(GK) P. Schmeichel (RB) G. Neville (CB) R. Ferdinand (CB) J. Terry (LB) A. Cole (CM) S. Gerrard (CM) R. Keane (captain) (CM) P. Scholes (LWF) R. Giggs (ST) Shearer (RWF) T. Henry
Formation - Flat back 4, Keane holding with Scholes and Gerrard further forward. Giggs and Henry either side of Shearer.
I don't understand why people moan about Gerrard not winning the Premier League and shouldn't be in the Team. He was one of the best all round Midfielders in World Football. He only never won the Title because he choose to stay at Liverpool, Chelsea wanted him and he stayed loyal to Liverpool. It was the same with Shearer who could have won a ton of trophies but turned United down to play for a lesser Team in Newcastle. For the simple fact that he wanted to play for his beyhood Club. It isn't anything to do with winning the Premier League, it is who were the best Players ever in the Premier League. For me apart from Keane, Gerrard was the best of the rest, closely followed by Scholes. If Henry, Giggs etc didn't win the Premier League I still would have picked them, For the simple fact of how good they were as Players. The players I picked were Players that would perform week in and week out, Season after Season and played at the top throughout their whole career. Strikers are the hardest part but for me comes down to numbers, Shearer is the all time top scorer so should be the Striker simple as that. Henry is the second all time top Scorer but not only that was one of the most feared Players to play against in the Premier League. As a Tottenham fan I hated him but can't deny how good he was. Giggs was at the top for longer than anyone, in his peak he was electric and was a very feared player and was consistent and never dropped off. Roy Keane was a simple pick and was by far the best Midfielder in Premier League history. He was the reason United won what hey did, even all his team mates have stated it was his drive that gave them that extra bit at matches to grab late Goals. That man was Alex Ferguson on the Pitch and was the greatest ever Captain. 2 Players I just left out which was very close was Ronaldo and Lampard, issue with Lampard was yes he scored Goals and sometimes made good passes but he wasn't all round like Keane and Gerrard. Keane and Gerrard had everything, they could pass, score goals, tackle, dictate play, drive their Team on, box to box, Lampard wasn't all of that but Scholes was more gifted. Ronald didn't have long enough otherwise he would have been picked, for me he had 2/3 outstanding seasons in England.

To leave out Scholes is criminal. Greatest player I ever saw. Ask any player who faced England and United, the guy was an animal for football, vision, power, skill, the clock. Everything. Won everything that mattered domestically. And no, before anyone says ‘owt, I’m a Port Vale fan. So there. Owd Seth all the way.

Craig Locker Everything you’ve said rings truth, but tell me what Scholes could do that Stevie or Lamps couldn’t? Passing is the only attribute i’ll give you over them, but they were equally as tenacious, powerful, and skilled as Scholes. Also better leaders, Scholes was on the quieter side it’s just his personality.

@@skipdkummm, isn’t passing a rather important part of a midfielders game I.e. the core of the function?
